Unrelated to War Thunder - but a fun video featuring a real He-162 test pilot:

6:16 "if we ever get a fuel slider" now we do🥲
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING
Its sad that despite beign one of the first jets to have an ejection seat gaijin didnt cared to give it to this jet on the game
Oh yeah because this matters in the game lol. Definitely no other priorities. Notice the lack of drop tanks on every plane up to top tier, an addition that would actually matter. Gaijin doesn't give a fuck, because only top tier makes money.
May 26 don't play the game!
@@HalIOfFamer dont take me wrong, i just left this coment because was relevant to the video but my list of improvements and sugestions to the game is as long as the one of scams and sneaky shadow changes that gaijin has pulled on the players.
@@StrayGuard fair
@@HalIOfFamer i might event leave it here if you are interested in passing it along
@@StrayGuard please do so I am complicated my very own to spread around so it might be good insight and you might have had better ideas.
Some ultra pro tips, it's a jet that rarely fights other jets.
1: You get to retain your energy as long as you are going straing-ish after a high speed dive at low altitude, props will bleed energy fast if they are after you.
2: Roll rate is among the best, even at high speed. As long as you have energy you can dodge most enemies easily.
3: It's a tiny target and surprisingly survivable, you can take quite a few 50.s before going down.
4: You can keep the throttle at 104% in all summer maps, your engine will not overheat.
5: Winter maps allow you to pin the throttle at 108%, so take the 20m fuel.
6: Your climb speed is 500kmh, so get speed and then climb. Going slower hurts your climb perfomance.
7: Belly land every time, you can touch down at 500+kmh and if you don't slam the ground your pilot will survive, and the plane will take minimun damage (engine is on top)
8: It's a menace in ground RB, the 20mm with air belts are pretty good vs light targets.
9 And last: As long as you keep the speed, there isn't a single prop that can catch you, so you get to decide what, when and were to fight.
I love breakdowns like this on how best to fly a specific plane. It takes so much of the guesswork out of learning them
I think a LOT of jets would significantly improve if there were fuel sliders. Would be an awesome meta shakeup.
Especially the jets that are around the superprop BRs, Yak-15 for example.
or even bombers, the 1hr fuel loads are still a lot of excess weight vs what id want to use.
id love to see it added as it is done in IL2, i loved the system they have for fuel and ordnance. even the fact you can take less ammo in your guns and such
j21RB is what i think about immediately with this in mind being forced to take either 6mins or a full tank of 20mins is horrible and a slider to go in between those would absolutely improve its performance
That makes me curious. My best guess about why they have it like that and not slider was: They use this type of choosing fuel, because each one of these options requires adjustments to the flight model (due to mass distribution and changes to that mass)....Or they are just lazy af.
@@little_shady_fox but the flight model is already being adjusted mid flight as fuel is used up
Unironically it’s one of my favorite planes. It was my first jet and boy was it punishing to learn but it truly can be a great plane
it looks really cool too
hey depending on your age when you played you might have been having an authentic piloting experience.
Same, it is at a perfect BR currently, and depending on how you play can be a complete dud or dominate games
it's in a decent spot at 6.0 now.
still, 288 black hole.
If only Germany at 5.0 - 7.0 wasn't a 2v6 every other game because of those 288s
I bring it at 8.0+ to take out choppers. As it is so loud they are scanning everywhere for a 262, or a MiG, but here I am hustlin' along the deck between the trees, pulling up to rail the choppers with the cannons at the last second.
There is a fantastic unpainted skin on the community also.
Love this plane, although its hard to even consider the cons of this plane while watching you shred the enemy team in your video lol
Funnily enough the Emergency Fighter Program managed to make the Do 335.
I dont know what is "emergency" on that thing, considering its the most complex plane in terms of the technology used.
Yeah, the 335 will get a review at some point as well - another fascinating story.
Emergency meant that it didn't use any critical resources to make outside of the engine. Outside of the general airframe design there really isn't anything technologically advanced about it as it used as much bare bones tech that it could.
@@rainsilent maaybe the inclusion of the ejector seat made me think its quite complex, lol
@@gustiwidyanta5492 Understood. The ejection seat was fairly basic and used compressed gas if I am not mistaken. It was the same system as the 335's.
I highly appreciate the nearly perfect spelling of the word "Minengeschoss". Thx Tim
This was my first jet and I have to say this video explains it perfect. If your going fast you’re basically untouchable but if you don’t have speed you’re basically a sitting duck, definitely don’t want to get into low speed turn battles with props.
I don't care if it's not too great. It's got more personality than any other jet in game. I will always have a soft spot for the salamander.
Same, its one of those planes that even if it sucked I'd still fly it and love it.
@@TimsVariety i think the same about the rocket planes like the Me 163 and the BI hahaha
My favourite and THE most informative channel for anything war thunder related.
i love how detailed this guide is on what to do
many guides on wt tend to gloss over what exactly you need to do and just shout an idea and say you have to follow that to the letter without telling you what you're even supposed to do
With the new fuel slider feature I’d love to see Tim revisit the plane and see if the fuel slider helps is performance at all
I Love the history and nuance with this video! Great Job Tim!
Fantastic vid as always Tim! Thanks for making great content for us to enjoy!
My favorite plane of all time, thanks for the video Tim!!!
The first time I knew about this plane was back in 92-93. It was one of the expansions for Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. Nice little plane. Amazing story of how fast it was designed and built.
Just wanted to add Tim (also love your content) in Ground RB the plane is BR 6.0 and you spawn in at speed already in the air and it works great at covering your friendly tanks from enemy fighters and strike aircraft
I think a fuel slider, or even a fuel dump option for aircraft capable of doing so, would be a great addition. For example, in the Su-25K you get either 8 or 20 mins of fuel. 20 makes you really heavy and not very maneuverable, and 8 gives you enough time to go take out some targets before having to rtb, if you even can lol. I think having the ability to carry 12 minutes would be pretty nice.
one thing that I love doing in the he162 is flying to the enemy ai aircraft shooting a couple down and then pull back to get more speed and alt before engaging the enemy.
props to u to find the will to play this plane. love the video though!
even though I know it won’t be the best, I know that I will force myself to be good at using it bc I think this jet looks cool
Interesting! I avoided this after all of what I've heard, but it sounds like it just needs a bit of knowledge to fly, perhaps I'll give it a go! The concise history on the plane was really appreciated too 😀
(I wish I understood Km/h 🤣)
Glad to see my personal strategies I came up with are applied here. Means I understand the jet well..
great video, love this plane! thank you!
"Low-res cockpit", lol
Have you seen the Spits? 5-polygon crowbar sends its regards
Yes... one of the *many* badly in need of an update lol
Very good review whole heartedly agree dis lil fella is one of my favs just fun if you know it
Ahhh yes.. the Salamander.
I know this thing isn't the greatest in wt and irl but it's still one of my favorite jets just for the aesthetics alone, it just looks really cool and kinda like a gen 1 iteration of a starfighter from star wars
I remember back in the old days, that thing was a dogfighting machine.
i love this plane for some reason, it's such a rat, it can't rip flaps and when it deploys flaps it turns into a UFO
I've always done really well with this plane. It handles well to me and the 20 CAL
I can just hit with easily
I am playing this jet alot, 3K/D. Its undertiered AF, borderline unfair to other players in a downtier. Low BR is due to players used to props playing it like a prop.
Tips: normal maps throttle = 105%, hot/desert maps = 104%. It makes actually a lot of difference and at those % you won't overheat.
DO NOT USE FULL ELEVATOR BELOW 600Kmh or you will simply just lose all of your speed in a single turn.
Gently land on your belly below 300kmh. Gaijin gives us short runways at these BR.
I absolutely love this plane. I use it in ground RB to clean up the CAS, nothing can catch me. It's an amazing boom n zoom at its br.
thank you so much for this vedio I have have learned a to about this beautiful jet . :)
The 162 actually has the potential tools to be a strong defensive fighter if you can force a one circle fight. The problem is that if you don't quickly get that kill you are now at low speeds and pretty much dead. It also leaves you extremely vulnerable to being 3rd partied.
I love this jet so much, and I love playing it. It's really good and fun when you learn it and it's really fun to dogfight american props that underestimate you.
I just got the plane and was serching it and you uploaded this 5 days ago, perfect timeing
I live to serve. :-)
@@TimsVariety Idk how tou do it, but your always there when i need info about a plane
Love this plane.... the salami
It's probably been said elsewhere but I would vouch for taking the He-162 out into Ground RB. It's very at home in that environment, starting in the air and with less of an energy/altitude meta compared to Air RB, really allows it to use its higher top speed to fly around with impunity. There are still some rough customers you can fight(the F-80A at 7.0 is a near impossible aircraft for the He-162 to defeat for example), and it has minimal ground-attack potential, but I was still really surprised how much fun I was having with it against enemy fighters and CAS.
One of these is in the Canadian aviation and space museum in Ottawa Ontario
Hey i love the video. Also i wanted to ask do you plan on doing a yak 15 review since it also one of the first fighters anyone gets on the USSR?
Monke see Tim video, monke click, monke happe
The glue was fine - the original glue - until the RAF had a high explosive word with the factory where it was made forcing the use of the only glue they had, which caused the flaws, test pilot Winkle Brown really liked it.
Yeah, I didn't want to spend the 20 minutes on the whole history with the "tego film" resin glue, but thats a whole fascinating side story on its own where one bombing raid crippled 50 different projects.
@@TimsVariety Same effect they were hoping for by going after the ball bearing plants in Schweinfurt (IIRC/?)
@@IMCDundee Yes, except that the target wasn't the glue factory itself. The glue factory just happened to be a part of a industrial complex that was critical to the German supply chain of raw materials in general.
To add on to Eric Brown liking it, the British high command did too. So much so that they thought that it was better than their Vampire and briefly considered doing something with the 162. One of the few flying examples coming apart in mid air during a demonstration flight killing the pilot because the pilot decided to do a maneuver that he was explicitly told not to do due to structural concerns abruptly ended any interest the British had.
The He-162-A1 version (which is on the Marketplace) has the same flight model but swaps the 20mm MG151/20s for 30mm MK108s, which I find to be much better for the short firing windows you’re going to have in this plane’s preferred BnZ playstyle.
doesn't it have less ammo and worse round velocity?
@@serch3ster Indeed. But the lower ammunition amount is canceled out by the destructive power of the shells.
However two Mk 108s are probably overkill compared to two MG 151/20 vs fighters 🙃
Sadly, I don't have access to the A-1 (otherwise this review would have covered both), but if it ever becomes realistically obtainable again its on my "worth it to grind" list for sure. :-)
@@serch3ster Yes, this is true. The upside to the MK108s is the raw firepower: the 20mm cannon will require a few hits to reliably kill, whereas even singular hits with the 30mm can potentially be fatal to fighters.
that things is increbily rare tho, last i checked there were 0 of them on the market place
This used to be my favourite plane in War Thunder. Probably about six or more years ago. I never really got the hang of it though, even with its' advantages with roll rate and the like.
have you made a video about the meteor mk 4? i feel its quite underrated coz its basically the meteor mk3 with almost double the engine power and more durable wings.
love your videos bro
I've only done one Meteor so far, the night fighter one with the radar. The Meteor is one of those planes where I can't really decide if I want to do one longform vid about the entire series, or individual vids about individual Marks, but spaced out over months/etc, because there are just so many of them that are similar and only a few that are stand-out, so to speak. TBD.
@@TimsVariety my humble advice, or what i would do if i was a ytuber, the mk 3, mk 4 and the premium reaper mk 8 since its identical to the reugular mk 8 other than the bombs.
idk tho.
keepup the vids man, best part of my day to learn about my enemies planes
Thanks for the review Tim, any chance you have one on any of the Ta-152’s found in game in the works? Would love to see it :D
I'm sure I'll get to one, or both, of them - but it probably wont be soon. I try not to review planes that are "too close to each other" too soon together, if that makes sense.
@@TimsVariety Makes perfect sense! I really like the plane but am kinda bad with it and want to do better when I play it with my friends. As always have a good one Tim!
Hey Tim, nice review, thanks! May I ask if you will be doing a review on the F-86A-5 in the foreseeable future? This is the plane that I'm currently grinding xp for, and I've heard some people say it's not very good performance-wise, although personally I love the looks of it immensely
I'll get to the F-86 eventually :-)
@@TimsVariety thanks!
My favorite german aircraft to fly in WT.
Very much so an acquired taste though.
it was the coolest thing when I started playing
I actually tested it out in the past, the best energy gain speed is about 475 km/h ias iirc. Notice I said "energy gain", this means both acceleration while keeping the same flight level as well as sustained climb rate. If you want to get altitude faster, the speed would be about 325 km/h but I didn't measure that figure.
I believe the story is the allies bombed the proper glue factor a couple months before construction.
Hello Tim. would it be possible to have some material links in video description? The story of this aircraft sounds like something I'd want to hear more of.
I generally use offline print books as my primary sources.
i love it too but once you get above 500 kph all the 288's either died or killed the enemies, therefore you are either alone against a full team of super props or your team won and you dont get to fight.
I always thought the He 162 was pretty cool looking. Also a very unconventional and unique engine layout
100 less than a 262!
Gaijin admitted that fuel loads are used to tweak aircraft's performance, so there's zero chance of fuel slider ever to be introduced.
In arcade its absolutly brocken if you know how to bait. you can outturn a bf 109 if its not an f version. especially the a-1 with 30mm is a bliss to fly. they buffed the climb rate recently again and its a bit better that fw 190 d in a medium to low angle.
it's my favorite plane by far, and they keep lowering it's br. It was a menace at 6.3, at 6.0 is absolutely brutal.
The last time I played it, it was at 6.7. I have to take it for a spin.
Really fun in sim tbh
This is one of my favorite planes I love to take it to GRB and take down strike aircraft
My favorite plane
Find Germany to have some of the most intresting jets (and rocket)
He 162 used to be fun sqeezing through small spots where other planes can't fit in custom games
The Ho 229, Me 262 and Me 163 rocket also great fun, that makes the American and Soviet early jets in my opinion pretty dull in comparison, not that the Germans are better, they just more unique and fun, as its fun to adapt to playing each of them.
The 229 will be getting a review at some point. Love that thing.
If only 229 had the ability to carry bombs, as it supposed to.
Badly rendered cockpits suck. I need to know wtf my plane is doing in sim battles
I just played a game in the 162 after watching this video.
It was a 7.0 game. We had two 7.0 SK60s and th rest of our team was 6.0.
The enemy team did not have that issue as I soon saw 5 F-84s in red.
After returning to the hanger I thought "how much could the repair be on an underperforming plane like the 162" and my jaw dropped when I saw it was over 14k sl.
I'm getting pretty sick of this stuff. My account was made is 2012 so i've been around for the long haul but if things dont get better, I might cease playing soon.
It sucks that a lot of planes like this are completely at the mercy of the matchmaker ... I have a really hard time in these early jets when they get uptiered like that.
.. then you get the repair bill ....
@@TimsVariety If the repair bill was reasonable, early jets and Super props would be all I played.
@@wowdanalise Might not be *all* I played, but I'd spend a LOT more time in those brackets to be sure!
@@TimsVariety This plane wasn't mean to be repaired but replaced. Be thankful we don't have to buy a new one and spade it after every battle LOL.
@@alfredware The ONE. TIME. that I'm glad Gaijin got a technical detail about a plane wrong!! ;-)
soo it's german jet p-51 with sweetspot over 600kph instead of 400kph?
Where this plane really shines is ground rb. This plane is an anti CAS god. In ground rb you spawn at 1500M at 700 Km/h.
Oh, look at that! I just bought that thing yesterday.
NOW IF I HAD ENOUGH MONEY FOR A CREW...
economy be like
Is there any particular reason you always discuss speed in km/h? As far as I know every air force on the globe besides Russia/China/North Korea uses Knots and feet for airspeed and altitude.
Mostly just because its the UI default for most regions, and its what most players use as far as I'm aware. Nothing significant.
Hello, Tim, are you participating in War Thunder Players Union? They are preparing list of proposal and your detailed description would be very helpful
Im submitting my own proposal to the snail - the video I did a few days ago is a preview.
@@TimsVariety but is it possible for you to interact with them? Or your visions are too different? I just thought that you could do a lot more together than apart
what speed do you climb at?
As fast as possible. 500kmh or faster at the start of the match.
@@TimsVariety whats your ideal climb speed
Next early jets, Yak line? ^~^
The next early jet on the review list is the Mig-9.
idk why but I find it OP as fuck, that or my enemies suck
ahh the rat rocket
Yeah it sucks it got Gaijined but atleast it still can be fun.
The god
Friend of my ask me once how I can player He-162 or Me163/263 well. All of them are one in common IAS 600km/h and you are ok.
262 is surprisingly fast for its weak engines, looking at you, attacker.
Im ok with all its flaws. Shjt fuel selection? I dont care, ill rtb early then. Energy retention in turns? I dont care. Low ammo? I dont fucking care. Long time to get energy? I DONT FUCKING CARE.
The thing that breaks it for me is the insanely bad rudder. I cant get my guns on target for shit if the enemy is dodging. You can compensate it somewhat with the roll but the rudder is just to shit. Thats what breaks it for me.
Give it a workable rudder and im in 10000%
Didn’t watch the vid yet but this Hot Dog is among my favorite jets. I hate everything about it and I think I’m a masochist. Send help please this is not a meme. (*For legal reasons this is a meme*)
240 bullets tho?
Yeah the GreedySnail nerfed alot of planes and tanks in order to keep ruzzian bias up sadly.
theyre not biased at all at gaijin hey?
Now we need a comment from the Iron Armenian :)
it should be lowered to 5,7 or 5,3
Yep, it should not face any early jets
The repair costs are a hard pass. O won’t play anything above 10k repair.
Ahhhh yes, the German sosig fighter
Pov He-162: 🔥 🪵
Vote with your wallet, don't feed the snail. Otherwise nothing will change.
best polane ever
Personally from historical point of view I like late war jets. However, I never played them for long and move ahead to the modern jets. The reason is that I didnt see much improvements in comparison with late props. Anyway. the 162 is a beautiful plane. But you are dying virtuously.
Inaccurately modeling the flight performance of historical aircraft is stupid. Either model it as accurately as possible or just start making made up planes. (Directed at the Snail that probably will never see this)
Its hard to know sometimes if its intentional, or incompetence.
Based on the back-and-forth I've had on some of the bug reports I've submitted about Chinese jets (the Q-5 series, and J-8, specifically) I suspect they might not have been using very good/much info in the first place.
I get that this is going to appear as Germany suffers but it isn't. These are just two egregious examples I got to see happen first hand. These issues aren't limited to German aircraft as aircraft from nearly every major tree that isn't Soviet has suffered from something similar in some way at some point. I think it is just straight up Gaijin incompetence and selective interest in fixing specific vehicles. This is why.
Example 1. The Ju-87D-5 took 2 years to get it's dive brakes. When the bug report was first submitted Gaijin said that the 87s being shown in the report weren't D-5s. When that was proven wrong Gaijin then said that they still weren't D-5s as the D-5 never had them at all to begin with. When that was proven wrong via Junkers documentation Gaijin made another excuse. It kept going for 2 years until Gaijin finally decided to fit the dive brakes but only if it wasn't carrying gun pods.
Example 2. The He-100D. A player scrounged up all of the surviving original German documentation on the He-100D, including a few documents from Heinkel itself, to show that the He-100D in game was wrong. Primarily that the He-100D had a standard cooling system similar to the 109 and had a MG151 cannon of some type (15mm or 20mm could not be proven specifically but it is known that it had a MG151 cannon of some sort) shooting through the propeller hub. Gaijin's response? "According to our sources what is in game is the production He-100D as it was sent to be trialed by the Soviets from Heinkel." The players then dug up the relevant information from Heinkel itself showing that what was sent to the Soviets was in fact 3 V armed prototypes sent before the actual production prototype He-100D was finished being built and present it in response. Gaijin's reply? "According to our sources the He-100D that we have in game is the production He-100D. The documentation you have provided is wrong."
First
"germany suffers" wait til you play USA 5.0-6.0 air and ground and you'll quickly disregard that belief (jadgpanter g1)

Its more of a meme at this point than anything else,
This plane is amazing in sim now with the Br compression
Hey tim. Can you do a video about British MB.5 someday. thank you:)
British Mustang. Keep it fast . Doesn't climb the best but it can be enjoyable especially with some friends
Im sure I'll get to it eventually :-)
