🇺🇸 TOMMY... YOU'RE A LIAR! MODEL Y, 3 DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE $7500. THAT'S THE REASON WHY TESLA DROPPED ITS PRICES! LIAR LIAR!

You lost me at $63k for sub-200 mile range. Excellent review as always, Tommy! You were a HUGE part of my decision to buy a Mini Electric and I am eternally grateful for all the information you’ve shared about EV’s.

Had the Toyota BZ4X on order. I could live with the range but the charging speed and wheels falling off made me cancel the order. I mean my 63 VW bug had the same style wheel bolts and they stayed on. Now happily driving a Kia EV6. This Lexus has the same Toyota limitations for more money.

Say it with me "compliance car"
It really does beg the question of how they've managed to get so few miles out such a large battery!!
220 miles out of a 70kwh battery? Not that surprising for an suv.
There are a lot of cost-cutting measure that would NOT make sense given the MSRP of the vehicle. Even with the struggling sales of the BZ4X, the this Lexus will most likely find a tougher time finding buyers given the limitations and lack of IRA tax credits when it goes into effect. Even Toyota themselves said it's only good as 2nd or 3rd vehicle, that even restricts the customer base even more.
Using the 2nd or 3rd vehicle excuse was fine at most10 years ago. Not today.
Game changer?
It's a BZ4X ... in Norway Toyota is offering to buy them back because they are so bad.

@@pemainmobile8007 I heard Asian version had very bad winter range, maybe that’s why…
@@mingjiecui2968 what I have is not the Asian version but the European version because there is news that the range has dropped dramatically due to the temperature factor or the use of a heater which wastes battery life. Whereas in Asia, most of them are tropical countries where there is only a dry or rainy season and no snow season, so the range can be used for a long time. While the Japanese version of the car is sometimes different from cars sold in Arabia, India or Southeast Asia. The Bz4x has 2 versions in terms of its battery, one of which uses one from Panasonic and the Bz4x for the Japanese market is different from the Chinese market.

Sub 200 range is just comical 😂😂 Toyota needs to go back to the drawing board
Looks like Sonic the Hedgehog with those vortex generators...
Make a video about this: Why the heck did piano black become a trend in the lower part of a car? 🤫
I am not a big Hyundai/Kia fan, but they seem to be doing the best job of price/range/luxury in electric cars...
For 30K this would be a buy
What I found intriguing was the radiant heating, the tint-able glass roof, and the light that projects patterns on to the door. As always, you'll find new tech make it's debut in the luxury segment, and eventually trickle down to the more "everyday" cars. I am really curious to see how that stuff works. I live in a northern, cold climate, and I think that radiant heating is a really cool (LOL) idea, especially if it helps preserve the range of the big battery pack. As for the vehicle itself, I think overall it looks really well done, fit and finish looks great, and I'd expect quality/durability/reliability to be great as it is a Lexus. However, I think for the price tag of well over $60K, that is a bit much to pay for less than 200 miles of range (with '20s), so I'm not convinced the value is there, especially with it not qualifying for the $7,500 tax credit. Also, I wish Lexus would redo it's naming system. I just find the number/letter system to be not very compelling and easily forgettable. Everyone knows what a Camry is. Maybe a switch there would help as well.
“One of the most important EVs of the year”
Since when have you become a comedy channel? 😂
I do like the design. I can overlook the range but the charging speeds is super slow. Especially level 2 you would think they could push 48amp charging.
Nothing wrong with the range or charging loof
Range is not competitive, and will only shrink with time. Acceleration is bad, too. Plus slow charging. Meh.
Range makes that an IMMEDIATE no
Great to see Toyota's commitment to boring continue into their electric lineup
Wow!!! What a throwback!!!
6.6kW Level 2? What are they smoking? The road trip loaner program starts nice in theory, but I bet no dealerships will want to give up such a loaner based on HQ promises.
In a world with the model Y at the same price(including tax break) I say good luck! Way to little, Way to late. Maybe for Lexus fan boys but no other way around it, it does not compare.
Tommy kudos to you for staying neutral on your true feelings about this sub-par attempt at an EV, but this would have been a good EV if it were 2017 and it was priced at $30K, but in 2023 this doesn't cut it when you compare price, features, range and cargo space to the competition. No tax incentives and this is just another vehicle for Toyota fanboys. It's always a red flag when manufacturers have to give a reason for decontenting a vehicle i.e., no glove box, no frunk, no full length rear spoiler etc.
150kw DCFC is decent. They must've fixed the charging curve from the bZ4X/Solterra if they're getting 30 minute 10-80% speeds.
6.6kW AC charging? That's... Not good. AC charging speed isn't as important as DC, but it's pretty weird that pretty much every new EV on the market can do 11kW. Even the Bolt EV can do 11kW.
If you buy this over a model y performance you are crazy
If you buy a model y over this your a loof
We own the bZ4X, we miss the rear window wiper! It took me weeks to not reach for it.
I think LEXUS should go back to the drawing board, because this car will not sell. Tommy you rock.
Ummm yes it will you loof
Its not intended for the masses. And thats a good thing!
The whole loaner car from the dealership was done by BMW when they launched the i3.
Didn't work out well.
Loaner program is pretty cool. If they can guarantee availability and make it seamless, offer offroad capable vehicles and ones with ski carriers, etc, it could be a good solution. One I would consider myself, even
LOL! Loaner program is simply Toyota (Lexus) admitting the range and charging speed of this car just sux. Maybe if they offered a Model Y as a loaner...
While I don't really LIKE the spindle grill cover, it's better than the spindle grill.
3:17 yes! this! more manufactures do this!!
The interior of the RZ 450e kind of makes it compete all on it's own, despite the rest of stats of the car being extremely underwhelming.
Would it be enough to get me to pick it over some other vehicles in the segment? no, I'd probably choose something else, but if they get get the stats up on the next go, and keep this advantage, I could see this finding a really good footing.
Very cool. Maybe next time they'll even let you drive it. 😎🤙
They were allowed to drive it, just an embargo against talking about the driving experience...
I just had to finish watching the entire video to see what a train wreck this entire car is…
What kind of charger could I install at home to charge at home
Hot looking car! Love it!
I like the loaner idea.
This is right there with the Bz4x, very slow 30 Amp AC charging and range is very low. It really seems like Toyota is trying to produce substandard EV's to prove they won't make it. They really need to, at minimum, offer 48 Amp charging with 80+ KWh battery.
Please, stop. Read the new Auto News report where Toyota has taken apart a Tesla and called it a "work of art" and the benchmark they'll use to get to where they will want their cars to go (from a cost of manufacturing perspective, not quality perspective). Toyota isn't trying to kill the BEV market or make substandard EVs. They're trying to recoup costs of the TNGA platform and this car's compromises is due to their pursuit of durability of their cars and to maximize production by making BEVs on the same assembly line as ICE cars. They realize now this isn't the best way to do so. But this is still a refined car in places that count to the drivers and passengers.
if this was 1-2 yrs after the MS, it would have been amazing.....its been over a decade, and this is it? this is all they can do?
also, you will not be able to span certain CCS chargers where we live given that poor range.
9:48 what is supposed to be loading?!
By the way, I love your watch. That is an Omega MoonSwatch, isn't it?
Not nearly enough range
I will definitely cross shop Lyriq by Caddy! Is this the Lexus Cimarron ? 🤣
I wanted the e-mini but I must have 5 seats. So I think I'll go with an Insight.
I would love to see a deep comparison of the 3 sister cars.
I am wondering if these sell well, will Lexus come out with an extended range version?
It won’t. At 65K, customers do research. What they’ll find with this car is that outside of the Lexus brand, you’re not getting much for that 65K.
I was headed to the comments to complain we can't get a rear wiper in an SUV, but got stopped in my tracks that we don't get a frunk in an EV SUV
The front end reminds me of Squidward from certain angles.
So happy that Lexus ditched the silly gauge cluster from the BZ4X and Prius. Beautiful car. Why so big if it is targeted as a local runabout and not a highway cruiser?
Lexus entering the game with a true model T starter car..
I would hardly call a $60k EV based on the BZ4x with a 147kw max theoretical charge rate and 220 mile range "Most important care of the year." If you want an electric traditional luxury brand the BMW i4 would likely be a better value and a better overall car given the recall for the BZ4x where all of your wheels could just fall off. I wouldn't suggest anyone buy this thing in 2023.
This is the most impartaint car of the year, get over it.. and if FAR better than any bmw scrap car
@@allentoyokawa9068 do you work for Lexus? This car is a horrible value, one of the worst EVs on the market.
It's far-fetched to say all the wheels would fall off. Presumably, the driver will stop driving when the first wheel falls off.
My hope is that this vehicle will not sell well in the used market and you can sneak some of these on the cheap. Would be awesome to have as a second car for around town and to work while still using the 1st car as the main long haul big stuff vehicle.
No Frunk is a question mark! 😅
They forgot the GV70é gets the credit at least for the start of the US product run. Faster: charging, to 60 and better better range if you resist the temptation to boost it all the time. 20:51
umm they didn't forget, no one want's junk like that!
That is a great looking car ❤
Really? In what world? Lol
The e-gmp cars only get in the 250 mile range when they are on the 20-inch wheels and are AWD.
300 in the summer and 245 in the winter highway and back roads. I had a ev6 gt line now I have the gt kia said it range is 206 I am getting 219 on back roads in winter right now
Tommy must have forgotten to put his contacts in if he thinks it's an attractive vehicle. Toyota is batting 0 so far with their EVs.
Not seeing this "one of the most important of the year" thing here. Are we simply applying that title because it is Lexus' first EV?
I'd argue it isn't enough for such a title.
The fact they offer loaners right out of the gate for when you road trip is SOO telling on the car. This thing should be pretty low on someone's list.
Everyone going at lexus for its range when it's the same as the f150 lightning 🤣. I think this car is great. Best offroad ev out there for the price.
This can't even compete with the bolt IMO.
“Buy this far for $63k and here is a loaner car for when you actually need your car to be a car…” fail.
Same underneath storage as Gen3 RX. fuel gauge icon! Seat memory also stores to your driver profile so when you come in for a loaner all your settings follow you.
If I heard right this is an around town car. Explains the lack of range. One of the comparison vehicles is a Tesla Model Y? Lexus lacks range. Some features are nicer. The price comparison is very poor for the Lexus. The car does fit with Toyotas view point of its costumers. Maybe the real take away is but a Tesla Model Y for any real driving and pay the extra additional money for the Lexus to go to local places where image is important assuming not one else is the wiser. I watched this whole video waiting for the feature that would be worth my time. Did not see it!
tesla tech is far superior to toyota.
upcoming TX [plug-in] would be much better choice I'll say....
Isn't it's biggest competition the BZ4X and the Soltera?
Toyota, at one point, was a leader in hybrid vehicles. Now, they can't even make an electric vehicle. Sad
This is the beginning of the end for toyota/lexus, they need to bring it and bring it now or they will be left in the dust.
Would love to have that budget ($60k) for a 2nd or 3rd car. These manufacturers have lost their mind.
Really shows how far ahead Tesla is in the EV market.
Or how far behind Toyota is at least.
Lol do you think toyota is sleeping on its laurels on evs?.. Toyota hates evs and I do too. Hydrogen is the way to go
@@ju4121 Hydrogen??Really?? I want some of whatever your smoking!
@@ju4121 I think Honda's new hydrogen hybrid is a very cool idea. I think Toyota doesn't care about EV's because they are smart enough to know that the supply train for batteries is so constrained it will take decades to build up enough to even think about replacing ICE vehicles. So no point getting in a war to make vehicles you cannot manufacture.
Never thought I'd see the day the we would need to jerk the car to change gears
I love Lexus cars but this entry is so underwhelming like the BZ4x. So many other better options. This wont sell well.
Those black fender flares are extremely distracting and make the wheels look tiny for this car. Why Lexus?
IMO, Lexus has little confidence in this EV when they say their target market are families making $175K+/yr and already have one or two cars. I don't think that's the target market for IS or ES buyers (i.e this is an intro car for EV shoppers).. I think the engineers fell short on range expectations but Lexus had too much invested to delay the model from going to market. Still, a good looking car.
For Toyota / Lexus to design a car that would have been competitive 10 years ago against the Leaf, but now is just an overly expensive toy for wealthy buyers who can afford to have at least one other ICE vehicle, is just outright disgraceful. Total waste of time. I tuly believe vehicles like this and the Hummer EV are being released in an attempt to kill the EV movement as they just add fuel to the anti-ev fire with crap range, terrible charging times, and ridiculous price tags.
I certainly won't be selling my 2013 Leaf to make a down payment on this pile of Lexus waste.
Ok, I know Lexus buyers that switch to Tesla, anyway, if the RZ 450e offered better range, I think Lexus would be shocked how well it could do, but with its range, can Lexus really justify its starting price and one wonders, how it would do with a lower starting price, overall, I would rank it, behind the Tesla Model Y (better EV in every way, note I said EV), next, the Cadillac Lyriq (one of Cads best model to date and feel worth its price), following the BMW iX (a problem, you have to look at it and dark colors look better) and next the Mercedes EQE SUV (I would wait for it), this may be a stretch, but I have the RZ 450e tied with the Audi e-tron (or upcoming 2024 Q8 e-tron, the name change), crazy but both of these EVs suffer the same problem, range, as for the Genesis GV60 (it's too small, enough said), I know Audi has the Q4 e-tron (it's fine, but wasn't a fan of the VW ID.4, so), I kind of always pull for Lexus or Cadillac vs the Germans, one would ask why didn't Lexus offer quicker charging and a larger battery pack, overall, it's what I expected from the first Lexus EV, given the fact Toyoyta's not a big EV fans
As a former RX350 owner I must say Lexus has dropped the ball. The range and price point is going to kill this vehicle.
Finally, a Lexus without a huge, garish grille. I hope the wheels don't fall off!
umm it is a LEXUS, the wheels will NOT fall off loof
Nice video - I gotta wonder though - who in their right mind would buy this when you have the better/cheaper/easier to charge Model Y? This is a huge miss on the part of Toyota IMHO.
No spare tire??
I like it but range is subpar. We have a Model Y and we do take it on 1000 mile road trips sometimes. Even around town the range is iffy for Lexus because between commute, kids activities and other activities, we do sometimes go past 200+ miles in a day. With 90% charge this thing will not work out for most families.
Not only it’s not the most important cars of the years it’s hardly the LEAST important car of the day. It’s a DISGRACE to Toyota engineering. It’s performance is worse than Model S from 12 years ago, they CAN’T produce it in volume because Toyota was late to secure battery/material supply. It’s worse than pretty much any EV - even the Bolt which costs less than half has more range. Tesla is not even where GM was in 2016… it’s way way behind and their lead in hybrids won’t help them because as many manufacturers found out BEVs need very different tech than hybrids. Toyota will shrink by 30% or more by 2027. It’s going to hurt bad.
Is the transition to electric inevitable or dependent on the politicians we elect?
Inevitable. The transition is not determined by the US, but by the Chinese, European and other markets. The US is just following in the paths of the other markets.
@@pnketia We have the ability to manufacture cars and produce oil. Our government is headquartered in DC, not Davos. What if we elect politicians who realize this?

Toyota just said the tesla model Y is the best designed generously built gem 💎 👌🏼 after taking it apart, look it up. Enough said!..
Yikes….Tesla Model Y Long Range is available for $55K minus $7500 Federal tax credit assuming you are eligible, for net cost around $48K. That’s $15K less than this Lexus. 100mi more range, Tesla Supercharger network with 250Kw charging, No Dealer to mark up the price or add in pricey extras, I think I’d go with the Tesla.
better tech too.....
Why would someone pay more AND suffer the inconveniences of owning one of these low range, low charging speed experimental vehicles?
why does lexus / toyota have to make a big mess out of the front of the vehicle. What a lost opportunity to make it look really cool and different from the old fuggly RX
Not even mentioning the pathetic range, but touch sensitive steering wheel controls in any vehicle is an automatic no.
Ah, the classic oratory technique of dam*ing with faint praise...
Paint the face of it red and gold and it looks like the front of Iron Man's helmet.
Is that just a tarted up Subaru Solterra / Toyota BZ4x? It looks the same. $63G (USD) for that? Not a chance.
