  • In this episode of Ramby Electric I review my new EV: a Nissan Ariya. I talk about the things I like, the things I think Nissan could've done better. I go through the trims of the vehicle, talk about range, interior and exterior, colours, specifications and even washing the car!
    There's so much to like about the Ariya, but in a crowded electric SUV market, is it the best car for the money?
    EDIT: I talk in the video about the "kick" opening for the boot saying that it doesn't work so well. I even show some video to demonstrate. And guess what, thanks to viewer Nick for pointing this out, I've been doing it incorrectly!! Check out my UA-cam short where I demo how to do it properly. Spoiler alert - it actuallt works rather well!!

      Thanks Justin. It's a lovely car to drive. The novelty isn't wearing off! Nissan claim that the charging curve is less of a peak and can maintain maximum rate for longer. I've filmed a charging video to test that theory that'll be going out on 5 March so look out for that. I suppose with charging it depends where you'll do it most. If it's at home then it's really not a problem, if it's out and about then the number of ultra rapid chargers above 150kW are pretty rare - certainly where I live - so I don't know how much of an issue it is in 2023. That will change, of course, and it's certainly a fair comment you make and something to consider. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks so much for watching. 😊

    Great review, the first review by an actual owner that I've seen. My EV journey is very similar to yours. My Ariya is my first EV, received it in December, same spec, same battery size as yours. Loving it. You're spot on about the interior storage and I would say that that is its only downside. Just like your other viewer I have had an issue with the Lane Assist function that will require a new steering wheel in a couple of week. This seems to be an ongoing problem as I have read other owners are having the same issue, if you ever get a System Fault warning showing then take it back to the dealer asap.
    Glad you've sorted out how to work the tailgate😂.

    The inside is so nice not like the Tesla which looks like a kids toy car , all plastic and cheap .
    This is my first EV car as well and it took me a while to make the change but when I saw the Ariya my search was over . So much for the money , I have the model with the propilot2 which is amazing! Great transition from my gas car , very easy to drive !

    New subscriber and owner of Nissan Ariya. In Canada the base model is they Engage and it does not have the power lift gate. I like that this car has a rear window wiper and most of the newer EV's do not have these for some reason.
    I noticed it is a fair amount wider than our Honda CRV that the Ariya replaced.

      Hi Doug and welcome to the channel - thanks for subscribing!
      It's interesting how different countries seem to be "packaging" the car differently. I didn't realise it was possible to tweak it so much (e.g. the power lift gate) but I suppose everything is software these days so it's to be expected. There are alarming reports of manufacturers experimenting with locking certain features until you pay for them and then unlocking them in software. It's the 21st century alright!?

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  11 місяців тому

      Correct. The Evolve trim is the one to go for, without doubt. If that trim with the smaller battery had been available for pre-order I would've gone for it without doubt, however it was a full £10,000 more for Evolve at the time as you needed to also get the larger battery. The ventilated seats would be very nice in the warmer weather, although I'm impressed at how quickly the climate control cools the interior of the car so it's not terrible in the Advance and there's always the option of pre-cooling the car before you drive. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for a great video. I've had my 63kwh Evolve for about 6 weeks now and am generally very happy with it. My main gripe is with the heating. It just isn't hot enough. 22 °C feels like 18°C in an Ice car and no matter what I do (auto/manual/all heat to feet etc) my legs and feet are always colder than my top half. Also the application of the auto handbreak is very inconsistent - sometimes it goes on after turning the car off but on occasion it doesn't.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Рік тому +1

      Hi Andrew. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the video. I'm loving the Ariya, but understand your frustrations with the heating. I've found using the infotainment interface for the heating is more useful than the haptic buttons. Tapping that you can visually see (and tap) where to direct heat. The bit in the middle can be tapped for screen, mid or foot areas and you can also adjust the fan speed. If you haven't tried that yet give it a go!
      I've had the same experience with the parking break. It mostly works, but I find it sometimes doesn't, most often when I've reversed the car behind the gates on my driveway at night for some reason? I'm hoping Nissan can find the fault and issue a fix for that.
      Thanks for watching and sending your feedback! 😀

    We have the Venture+ trim in the States and I've been pleasantly surprised at the range and efficiency of this combination. Driving at 70 mph, I can achieve about 275 miles highway range and at 65 mph, that increases to 320 miles. Enough for short trips to other cities especially to Hotels or parking garages nearby that have free Level 2 charging. Our other ICE vehicle (Jeep Wrangler) only gets driven when we need a second car for the two of us. We love ours!

I am also a first EV buyer and made the same experience like in the video with an ARIYA, I was given for a weekend to test. What I like is the silence, the design from inside and outside, the quick up heating of the car in Winter (it took from -5°C to a cozy feeling in the cabin and de-icing the front window 2 minutes), the touch buttons, no cardan tunnel and the 600Nm of torque😊.

    I'm not so interested in the car, seems too big and inefficient for my needs. Think you ordered this a while ago and only just arrived recently, what do you think of the Model Y price drops? Or since you don't motorway travel or do long trips it might not seem to be any advantage to you?

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  Рік тому +4

      So pleased you enjoyed the video. Yes, it was great fun making it. The Model Y price drop is a good thing for sure but it's still more expensive than the Ariya - or at least the price I secured for it when I ordered it. The Model Y is a similar size to the Ariya. My wife doesn't like Teslas so it wasn't an option for us as we share a car. If I was buying just for myself then it would've been on my shortlist. You're right about range - I don't do many long journeys so the 200 - 250 mile range of the smaller battery Ariya is more than enough for me.

      Thanks for your kind words. As I mentioned in the video I've been getting what I imagine is around 220 miles driving around town with the 63kWh battery. I've achieved as high at 5.1 miles per kWh without even trying, although it's mostly around 3.5. I haven't done any motorway driving yet - there's just one short dual carriageway near me where I can push the car to 70. There's no doubt that motorway driving would hit the range significantly. I wouldn't be surprised to see it dip down somewhere between 150 and 175 miles, but that's just a guess.
      I'll be doing some range testing in a future video so look out for that. Please subscribe if you haven't already so you see that content when it drops!

Wish it could stay pristine! But like you said, time will tell, cosmetic damage is ok and expected, but hopefully nothing more than that. One more thing, I can’t find charging information specially for the Ariya, there’s so much information out there and sometimes conflicting. What I mean is, for optimum battery health, are we supposed to let it run down to about 20-30% every so often and then charge it back up to 90-100%? Please pass on any information you have come across that is credible. Thank you!

      Hi Vickie. I've done some research into this in preparation for another video, however you need the information now! I can report that the advice I've recevied from Nissan about this is to generally charge to no more than 80%. I'm not going to be really zoned in on this myself. It was 84% when I unplugged the car last night and I've charged it to 100% when I've got a long journey ahead of me. They didn't say anything about a lower percentage. I'm looking to charge at around 20% however the last time it was down to 11% and the time before that 7% so it really depends how it goes each time.

Unfortunately my Ariya is booked to return to the dealership to have a new steering wheel fitted, since the road centring on the pro-pilot doesn't work. I've also noticed that when I put the night lights on to adjust the main beam and in the car by myself, I have an illuminated button saying, "Passenger Airbag Switched off". This button is immediately next to the rear view mirror, which is extremely distracting. Another fault? I'll let you know.

Sorry to hear about the faults. I haven't used Pro-Pilot very much as I've been mainly driving on local roads, however when I have tried it it's worked OK and the car grumbled at me the other day for being too close to a white line so I supsect mine's working OK but I'm going to take a closer look at it after reading your comments. Good video. We currently have a 2020 Leaf SL Plus and are getting an Ariya in 3 weeks. I am baffled on why the e-pedal on the Ariya doesn't bring you to a complete stop. I am hoping that this could possibly 'fixed' by an over the air update. Many people in Ariya forums are pleading for it as many are former Leaf owners.

      It's a fair comment. I wonder if it's got something to do with preventing the brakes from seizing up? I've read that's a problem with cars with true one pedal driving. As someone who is totally new to it, I'm not finding it too much of a problem, but I can genuinely see why Leaf owners would think otherwise! All the best for your purchase - not long to go!!!

      I test drove the Ariya today and I was much more impressed than I had expected. It had a "Hold" button to the right of the steering wheel which meant it came to a stop at junctions like the Leaf. You just press that button once and it activates every time the car stops.

      That will depend on lots of factors as insurance costs are related to you personally as to what kind of risk you are to the underwriters of the policy. Anyone considering one of these, needs to take serious stock in their decision making skills. Watch other reviewers' content. Especially for the price, this EV is possibly the worst one on the entire market. The worst thing people going EV for the first time can make is, allow themselves to be charmed by things that all EV's provide.
    The Genesis GV60 is so much better than the Ariya, it's not even the same species. I'm not talking stats/range/room, just take a look, inside & out, at the Genesis (especially with the light brown interior) & tell me you'd still prefer sitting in the Ariya. If Nissan dropped the price by about 25%, it might compete. The KIA, Hyundai and of course, Genesis, all utterly defeat the Nissan.

      @@TheRamblyChannel I do tend to sulk. I find it depressing to see the industry moving along so slowly, with such high prices. I was so excited about what Elon did, then I was disgusted by that animal's behavior & will be getting something else. Nissan seems to have both feet in the past, and yes, I know retooling factories & assembly lines, paying designers & engineers top dollar & of course, sourcing the batteries & components, that's all expensive - however, they don't need to build or do R&D on internal combustion engines/transmissions. Not only should EV's become MUCH cheaper, they should be FAR more reliable & the tech should be competitive. Warranties are still insulting, despite their getting rid of 85% of moving parts. I include Genesis in this shitlist of being overpriced & seeing manufacturers pass along what seems to be every penny of their readjustment costs. It's our fault they weren't prepared for the EV market, our fault it cost them so much to adapt. The EV horsepower equivalent is also coming down, the market readjusting itself toward the neutered, domesticated, "gosh I just need to get from A to B" dopes, who might as well take public transit. No one should wonder why that asshole Elon is doing so much better, it's partly because ~480hp is exciting. No more sub-200hp, FWD SUVs, EV's are finally here & we FINALLY get some power. Buyers should be having the best time of their lives now. Options should be so plentiful and every single EV should be so reliable, the vehicles should be warrantied to 200k kms comprehensively. So, Nissan puts out a dud. It's mom-jeans. I was always a fan of Nissan's ICE cars' style, then in North America, their reliability plummeted & they just stopped trying. Now they do the same thing as Subaru - "If you insist on having an EV of our brand, I guess we could throw something together for you, but we'll be ignoring every peeve, shortcoming & complaint coming from the EV industry & pundits for the last 5+ years". If you don't care about these things or they don't' affect you, of COURSE you buy what you like, I'm just some cranky bastard - but when I see an entire company with so much potential squeeze out this overall obsolete nuisance & call it their flagship EV, I mean, jesus, somebody's got to lose their job over this. Whether the GV60 is loved or hated over personal preference is one thing - but someone at Nissan obviously hadn't seen the GV60 or driven one & their answer was this thing, and they want HOW much? If Nissan listens to me (I am going to be proven so right in a few years, it's easy to dismiss my dumb rant now), but the best thing Nissan can do is, ignoring their stakeholders' squeals of "profit now, to hell with tomorrow", lower the price on this EV by ~$15-20k US. Someone's going to drive a GV60, climb back into their Nissan, and they'll have to be put on suicide watch...!

      Yes I do agree all these EV’s are too expensive right now, a bit like the first colour TV’s. But if you actually drive an Ariya for a couple of weeks, then I’m sure you will get to like it, and it’s Engeering quality, even the windows are pieces of laminated glass, to cut down external noise, helping making it one of the quietest EVs around. For most, it’s a very nice quiet, comfortable car, it’s just a bit too expensive, so go for the basic cheapest version, but buy the extra carpets, then it has most of what most families want, a very nice car.
