- The Lexus RZ450e is Lexus's First Electric car and it is not very good. In today's video I share the unfortunate truth about the Lexus RZ.
We start our review with a thorough technical review of the RZ and it's mechanical\electrical construction.
Then we take a tour underneath it.
Then we look at the outside and inside. Then I share with you the issues with the Lexus RZ and why it is like that. Mainly the low range, unpredictable range count and the long charging time.
The Lexus RZ is seriously lacking behind competitors like Tesla and others. The reason it is lacking is Lexus's commitment to reliability which in this case unfortuatnly works against them.

Dumped my Tesla Model Y “long range” for a Lexus RZ450e ($18,000 in Lexus lease offers effectively reducing price to $43,000 helped greatly!) and I am glad that I did not listen to the negative reviews. First, most of the RZ reviews were from a year ago, on pre-production or prototype vehciles. Latest Lexus software update unlocks dramatic improvements in efficiency and range. Am getting 4+ miles/kWh which is a HUGE jump from my Model Y’s 3.03 miles/kWh. In city driving, I get over 250 miles of range, which is 70 miles MORE than my Model Y in similar conditions because Lexus does not have the nausea inducing aggressive regen that Tesla has which hurts the Model Y’s efficiency in high traffic conditions. The Lexus blows away the Tesla Model Y in ride comfort, refinement, tech and safety. The RZ’s ride is sublime - on par with a Mercedes S Class. Lexus lane tracing/auto steering is better than Tesla’s Auto Pilot. And the RZ boasts thoughtful features that Tesla lacks: Safe Exist Assist, which prevent doors from opening when cyclists or traffic is whizzing by, panoramic cameras, Auto Parking assist, front and rear cross traffic alerts and automatic braking. The RZ also has a better turning radius, lighter steering, and far more comfortable (and ventilated) seats. So don’t be fooled by the negative reviews - go drive one. You’ll be blown away, as I was. Before I decided on the RZ, I drove Cadillac Lyriq (nice, but pricey and has an annoying low speed chime) and Hyundai Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 (both good, like the Ford Mach e, but lack the Lexus refinement and cachet) and Nissan Ariya (horrible dealer experience, nosedive under braking). Lexus RZ beats them all!
Still love my plug-in hybrid. Commute distance is same as EV range, so an EV vehicle most days, but still can go over 500 miles on a full tank of gas for long distance driving. Best of both worlds.
Gen 2 Volt is an underrated masterpiece. Just need the same drive train in a more practical body style, preferably just a Hatch Back.

Great review. Great honesty here. The range issue makes this car a complete no go. If the future is electric, Toyota is in big trouble. When this thing arrived, dealers were asking $25k over msrp. Can’t imagine they sold too many.

I test drove this vehicle and honestly I loved it. I will say it's a different approach for lexus, the materials were so different from their other models. Some features I want added in, But all in all I loved it.

I just got done with technical training on the RZ. The fabric is for the radiant heat. THAT's why there's no glove box. It's just a different vehicle.
Lexus left a lot to be desired with this car, but then again it’s the first actual EV so hopefully Toyota/Lexus can learn from this car and improve a lot on their next iteration.

It's hard to justify $60,000 for that, even given the range and it's a Toyota. Might be OK for Arizona or Southern CA, but in the cold north, the range would truly suffer
Kind of, yes... but they put a heat pump on new EVs these days and climate control the battery compartment. Yes, it's ridiculous and uses more power- they still lose efficiency in the cold, but it's about half as bad or less than without the added tech. Mind you, added tech = more complexity and shit to go wrong. I'll stick with my port injected V8s tho
LOL nope these 71kwh BEVs will do fine in the ARCTIC CIRCLE where they are developed. If you really need to maximize range and go beyond 150 miles you should Pre Heat on Level 2 Charger power. That massively reduces range loss from heating. As long it's a modern BEVs with more than 60kwh and power train heating system. Any properly designed BEVs will do fine in SNOW weather.
@@Neojhun no they won't. You don't know what you're talking about. I have a fleet in the Arctic circle for big oil and the trucks need to run 24x7 between maintenance intervals. There is no such thing as an EV solution for that application.

@@Neojhun BS. Try northern Iowa. It's the end of January, it's -20 degrees, I have to drive 100 miles. The battery MIGHT get me there, maybe, and I'm still cold. Now I'm stranded, because I can't plug my car in to "pre-charge/pre-heat" etc. Complete inefficient BS. Lithium-ion batteries perform very bad in cold weather, and efficiency drops 50% or more.
Another fun fact: Recharging from the electrical grid: If 15% of the U.S. bought electric cars right now, and IF they have the capacity at home to charge it, the electrical grid in this country would crash... same reason you see "rolling blackouts" in the summer when it's hot, is the same reason why dumping lots of power into a EV is not realistic now.
And here's the additional kicker: The majority of power generation plants in this country are powered by natural gas, coal, etc. Wind and solar take a back seat. There hasn't been a new nuclear permit in decades (nuclear is the best option). But I say: "Let's burn more gas and carbon to charge EV's." Huh? Or, you could just drive a normal car. See what I'm getting at here?
EV's have their place, in small places. But for the northern hemisphere, no. Maybe 100 years from now.
When I started watching your videos I thought you were a Toyota/Lexus psychofan like me, but the more I've watched you I've realized you are a rational, and your videos are more objective and well thought out. You call out the things things I would have over looked just because it's a Toyota or Lexus if not up to standards or simply don't make sense from them and pause them objectively. I love that! Ahmed, these are the best reviews because of the actual, real technical explanation of the components under the hood. Anyone can explain the simple stuff like LED lights and aero components, but you still need a genuine Master tech (like yourself) to give a truly satisfyingly technical review.
True mastery of something is when you're able to take an extremely complex topic and explain it in simple, easy to understand language, and that's what you've been doing with all of these technical reviews.

I took my car to TCCN last Friday for oil and filter i got to see AMD he is just what you see on his channel a god loving man that cares about you and your car i felt so much better about this world after leaving his shop a very wonderful man.
A good reason why it’s not good is because I’m pretty sure that if toyota and lexus weren’t forced to they wouldn’t make BEVs, but they are, just that they don’t care, while they continue to work hard on HEVs and PHEVs

I drive a Tesla and learned that you never place the setting for range on "miles". Always set it on battery percentage. This acts most like a ICE fuel guage. You wouldn't drive your gas vehicle around monitoring "miles of range" because it also adjusts based on environmental and driving conditions. Works great and i never worry about range...only about battery percentage left
Hum…I leased a little BMW i3 concept car and I have a tiny instrument panel but it displays battery percentage and mileage among other things. I’m retired so just run around town or say 100-125 mile round trip max a few times a year.

As a long-term Lexus customer, I am very disappointed in various elements appearing in the latest Lexus models: unlabeled steering wheel buttons, door release buttons, confusing shift levers, subscriptions for navigation and other services, no 6-cylinder engines in high trim levels, etc. Sadly, I will not be visiting the Lexus dealer when it is time to replace my ES or RX. And I certainly won't be considering an RZ should I decide to try an electric car.

I feel the same. We had 2 RX's which were fantastic, but now lexus wants to push 4 cylinder junk along with all kinds of subpar stuff to go along with it. I'm not going for it.

I switched from the Tesla Model Y to the Lexus RZ450e (18 inch wheels) and it was the best decision ever. Do not listen to the skeptics /critics. The range and efficiency is amazing. 95% of my driving is in the city (Washington DC) at speeds below 35 MPH and I average well over 4.5 kWh/mi. On a recent drive, I got 7.2 kWh/mi. Using regen at lowest setting is key to getting maximum efficiency because Lexus designed an adaptive automatic regen braking system that recognizes when the car needs to slow down (for curves or stopped traffic) and blends in appropriate regen and friction braking as needed to simulate a true one pedal driving experience.
The RZ’s ride quality, powertrain refinement, quietness and sound system all blow the Tesla Model Y away. Lexus discounted this heavily so it ended up being a $43,000 car.
As for the Normal/Eco/Range settings, once you sign in, it remembers your preferred settings. The radiant heat feature is genius BTW - feels like a warm blanket on your legs. Safety features like Safe Exit Assist prevent doors from opening if a car or cyclist is approaching (can be overridden). There are so many thoughtful touches and safety features, makes Tesla looks pretty crude and ancient.

Toyota should have kept the partnership with Tesla that they had since the early days of Tesla so Toyota and Lexus could have access to the Tesla charging network, Tesla software and battery/battery management technology.

@Paul Sure, but Tesla's market cap is based on FSD, which is not "Full Self Driving"
Toyota dealers delayed this for years. They demanded their dealerships still be able to service cars, the major profit center for them. All electric models like Tesla need very little servicing, so that major profit center would be lost. Toyota "solved" the issue by pumping out more hybrids, where there is still all the complexity, repair, and maintenance of the gas engine AND adding some electric assist. If Toyota doesn't figure out quickly how to keep their dealers profitable and the brand competitive, they will be left behind. Remember when Cadillac made pinnacle products in the 70's and 80's? Cadillac was at the top of their game. And then they weren't - their loyal customers eventually aged out and died. Toyota needs to act quickly.

Your points on heating in EVs are so true that I have experienced it myself.
VW ID4 US spec doesn’t have any heat pump. It uses massive 9kw heater. Maan that heater eats up battery like nothing in a cold day. It also has the world’s worst battery management system. Ingenious VW engineers program the heater to be activated when refrigerant (or coolant) is below 12 celcius.
So even if you deactivate cabin heater, that 9kw ptc heater will be activated to heat up the coolant.
This causes the car to be extremely inefficient in freezing temperature. I was getting 1.7 kwh/mile and 150mile range on a 82kwh battery.
Tesla Model Y gets above 3kwh/mi easily in the same conditions. Same 82kwh battery capacity gives you 250mile+ range in winter.

I almost bought one of these the other day and I’m glad I decided to think about it for a couple of days. The one thing that turned me off was it only got 196 miles for a full charge, so when you’re using the heat or air conditioner who knows if you’ll even get 125 or 135 miles. It might be fine for somebody that just wants a grocery getter vehicle, but the one I was looking at was $64,000. You did this video just in time. That should tell you something when these sit on the showroom floor and nobody wants them, when there’s a waiting list for people waiting to get the RX 350h

Absolutely agree. We got sucked into thinking how polished the Lexus was, how long the Toyotas last... When you're now looking at all electric, Toyota is playing catchup. Tesla is so far ahead technically that Toyota might be in trouble.

As someone who’s owned an EV for 2 years, the range…for that price is completely unacceptable…and I’m retired. Agree 100%…a very expensive grocery getting or errand runner….OMG this is a fail.

Dumped my Tesla Model Y “long range” for a Lexus RZ450e ($18,000 in Lexus lease offers effectively reducing price to $43,000 helped greatly!) and I am glad that I did not listen to the negative reviews. First, most of the RZ reviews were from a year ago, on pre-production or prototype vehciles. Latest Lexus software update unlocks dramatic improvements in efficiency and range. Am getting 4+ miles/kWh which is a HUGE jump from my Model Y’s 3.03 miles/kWh. In city driving, I get over 250 miles of range, which is 70 miles MORE than my Model Y in similar conditions because Lexus does not have the nausea inducing aggressive regen that Tesla has which hurts the Model Y’s efficiency in high traffic conditions. The Lexus blows away the Tesla Model Y in ride comfort, refinement, tech and safety. The RZ’s ride is sublime - on par with a Mercedes S Class. Lexus lane tracing/auto steering is better than Tesla’s Auto Pilot. And the RZ boasts thoughtful features that Tesla lacks: Safe Exist Assist, which prevent doors from opening when cyclists or traffic is whizzing by, panoramic cameras, Auto Parking assist, front and rear cross traffic alerts and automatic braking. The RZ also has a better turning radius, lighter steering, and far more comfortable (and ventilated) seats. So don’t be fooled by the negative reviews - go drive one. You’ll be blown away, as I was. Before I decided on the RZ, I drove Cadillac Lyriq (nice, but pricey and has an annoying low speed chime) and Hyundai Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 (both good, like the Ford Mach e, but lack the Lexus refinement and cachet) and Nissan Ariya (horrible dealer experience, nosedive under braking). Lexus RZ beats them all!
They should really do severe testing in the frigid Temps of Canada and extreme heat of AZ and death valley

I own the BZ4X Limited FWD and it interesting to see your observations here. I personally have mixed feelings about my BZ4X. On the good side, it's very quiet and the acceleration is very smooth yet instant. The bad side is that the car lacks features at the price point. I'd expect features like memory seats and power folding mirrors at the price point. The front passenger seat is not even powered. I agree with the rear wipers. I've driven in the rain and wished it had rear wipers. I also wish the car has a battery percentage displayed in the instrument screen. When I got the car from the dealer, the battery was almost depleted with the low battery warning. It took me about an hour to get it to 80% at a 50kW charger near my home.
Why didn’t you get a Tesla?
That’s a lot of features missing. Even if it’s a Toyota version, should have some of those features as standard. No memory seats, no power seats? I bet it doesn’t even have power telescopic steering wheel. Does it at least have ventilated and heated seat as options? And multi zone auto climate controls?

@@ONI1013. It only has driver's power seat but no memory. The front passenger seat is six ways but it's manual. There's dual zone climate control in the front with rear vents. The front seats are heated and ventilated. The rear seats are heated too. The steering wheel is only manual adjustable. But bear in mind that I had to get the limited trim to even get power driver's seat. The XLE only has manual driver's seat. The price difference between the trims is like $2K so I didn't want to settle with even less features. The 360 camera is also part of the Limited trim and I really wanted that feature.

I’m type of person who actually likes all the bells and whistles of a car, as I use most of them and find many a great convenience that I will never settle without now- like 360 Cam, Auto-Climate, BSM, Dynamic Cruise, Memory/Power/Vent/heat Seats, etc.
Sticking to my Hybrid Toyota.. this New all Electric Design needs more development and refinement.

The dealers kept Toyota in hybrids for profit. Dealers make the majority of their money on the maintenance and repairs, not the sale. EV's like Teslas don't need anywhere near that level of servicing so dealers complained loudly to Toyota to keep the profit center going. It's bought them time but now that time is quickly running out.
I agree. my wife has a Camry hybrid and can drive 600 miles and refill in 5 minutes. in Australia it's commen to drive for 4 hours, I wouldn't want to waste 3 more just charging in between.

The inescapable nature of electric cars and rapid obsolescence is in heavy conflict with Toyota ideology. I am glad Toyota is not joining the bandwagon, and just put out this symbolic half-assnes instead. I hope it will not be their fall, because in the long run they are absolute right with their cautiousness regarding the EV revolution. The absolute most environmentally friendly action a car manufacturer can do is to not put out millions of cars that will have lost all use value in five or ten years.
We’ve gotten by without a frunk for, let’s see almost forever. Don’t see that as a drawback at all 😊

I know that Subaru is not a huge part of Toyota, I think that Toyota owns ~20% of Subaru, but I would love to see you do a full walkthrough of the 2023 Crosstrek PHEV. I happen to own this Crosstrek and absolutely love it! I would really like to see a full walkthrough of all of its tech. and components. I assume that is has a lot of similarities to the 2022 Prius and Rav 4 systems. Thanks!
I like your videos but here I can't get your point. Looks like you're not happy with the size of the inverter/converter unit and the cooling system because you said is too complicated. I think is wrong comparing with Tesla, because you said yourself that there is an issue with the reliability. So what you would choose, the reliable system or good-looking system? Also, the hood area is full of staff to be easy for maintenance. They were thinking for the mechanics. Do you think would be better if all this staff is hidden under the back seats instead of front hood? Then for the storage area. Maybe the people can decide for themself if they need bigger storage area? The last think I'd like to mention is the purpose of this car. If I decide to buy such a car it will be my everyday drive in the city and it will save me a lot of money. The range is enough for daily driving and later in the evening I will simply charge my car and be ready on the next morning. If I want to go hiking for sure will choose other car with normal engine. The most important is the purpose of the car you buying is my opinion.
I liked what I saw under the hood: everything clear and open for visual inspection. And should maintenance or repairs be needed, it is all very easily accessible = small labor costs = lower cost of ownership.
The problem with EV’s in general is the fact that every time you power something on, be it the HVAC system, power seats, headlights and even plugging in your phone to charge it, it’s constantly sucking power from the batteries thus lowering your range right away.
Until automakers can design and build an EV that can charge up fully in 10 mins or less with a very high range amount, they are simply not practical to own.
You also have to keep them plugged in and charged every day which can be a PITA and also stressful for the owner especially if they forget to plug them in on a daily basis.
The wonderful thing about ICE vehicles is that they take 5 mins or less to fill up the tank, you can start them up after sitting for months in storage if the battery is good, and they will keep on running a 100 years from now with basic maintenance unlike an EV which will be in the junkyard once those batteries fail in 5-10 years and the cost of replacing them will be outrageously expensive.
Again, EV’s aren’t practical and realistic to own especially if one lives in apartments or condos, or a house without a garage to be able to fully charge them.
I predict ICE vehicles will still be in high demand in the future after all this EV craze and hype is over with.

I had a good chuckle when I worked on a new LS with the rear camera washer, thinking "hold up, why can I push the stalk to the rear washer position on a LS?" and putting the car in reverse and seeing the mess.
Toyota isn't really taking electric cars seriously. It's more like afterthought of "we have to do it as well" but they don't believe in electric cars.
I think that they are doing what they have always have been that is slowly intergate new technogly as it is proven their reputation is too good for them to do thing hastly like other brands that are all in EVs and are having issues/losing customers
The perfect EV imo would be if Tesla let Toyota use the platform to make a car. Lexus build quality with Tesla platform.
Tesla manufacturing truly is 8 years ahead. This Lexus is a rebuilt gasoline car, unlike Tesla being pure electric.

I bought the RZ as a town car. An LX is my road trip car. I only recharge at home at 6 cents per KWH. I buy Lexus for the service. I call, they pick up either Lexus from my home, leave me a loaner, and bring it back when it is serviced. I have never seen my dealership. Purchased the cars on line and they were delivered.

Compared to the Lexus/Toyota hybrid lineup all EVs are lacking.
With a few use cases as exceptions, Lexis/Toyota satisfy most market segments better than any EV solution. Especially in California where electricity costs are so high that energy for a 42 mpg hybrid costs the same as a 3.2 m/kWhr EV.

I live in Canada where it is quite cold in the wintertime and the charging infrastructure is virtually non-existent. It is important to me to be toasty warm in the winter and reasonably cool in the summer. I really dislike range anxiety, in fact, I top up my car when it hits the half full mark. I have a friend who has a Hybrid Camry as well as a Hybrid Rav4 and he is very pleased with both of them. I would definitely consider a Hybrid Toyota but I have no interest in a fully electric one at this time, specially as my primary vehicle. In the future, I would consider a fully electric vehicle as a second car for city use but the price would have to be reasonable and the battery technology / chemistry would have to improve. I think that Lexus has tarnished their image by introducing this vehicle.
I too am in Canada and we have neighbours and friends who have leased the Tesla 3. They all say the battery and therefore range are literally cut in half during the winter.

For example in the model 3 between the standard range with its very abusable and hot-weather tolerant but super-slow-to-charge-in-the-cold LFP battery and the long range with its lithium-ion with its intolerance of 100 percent charging but relatively fast cold weather charging?
I’ll watch this later but with the BZ4X is terrible and behind everyone else. The range is not there in fact in Norway it’s like 40% less than what they say. And in cold it gets really bad. Any charging really stinks. They are going to reprogram but it still won’t make that range they give. Even with the reserve and more charging it stinks. Slow charging compared to others . I wish they come out and give true mileage when you finish with programming.

I agree with you 100%. They are reinventing the wheel with each model. I am fed up with all the changes. Using the console to turn radio and other thing has turned me into an unsafe driver. Give me back my knobs. I can drive making a phone call and be safer than twiddling with the darn console screen. I will stick with my gas and hybrid models. Great and HONEST video.

I'm a hardcore Toyota guy (over 40 years), and although the fit & finish is what I expect from Toyota, many of the design features (mechanical and aesthetic) on this vehicle leave me scratching my head wondering, "Why?". Sorry Toyota/Lexus, if I was going to purchase an EV I'd choose any of the Tesla models before considering this Lexus model. And yes, I'm well aware of the substandard fit & finish, and the "cheapness" of Tesla's interiors. Toyota/Lexus fell extremely short with this model.
Ahmed, as an now-independent mechanic, are you going to get / maintain training on electric vehicles? Do you have to pay for extra Toyota certifications? I ask because my independent mechanic still defers hybrid related engine maintenance to dealers, as if they are still too knew and niche-oriented to bother ramping up training for his staff. I find that odd since my hybrid is now 16 years old and Toyota has sold MILLIONS of hybrids. Is the learning curve that steep? Is it a tools cost issue?
I wouldn't buy any electric car it makes no sense to own one. Another problem is that no dealerships or independent shops know how to repair them. Only specialized technicians can repair them

I beg to differ...I am 81 years old and have been driving Toyota and Lexus for nearly 30 years. The last three were Lexus hybrids, and before that , two Prius. So I have some experience with Toyota/Lexus products. While the range of the 450e does not meet the needs of most drivers, there are a number of us that are retired and use our car far less than working folks. For me, I wanted the luxury of the Lexus which is far superior to Tesla and others. The driving experience of the 450e is just superb for me. So let your criticism apply to your own needs. The 450e fills mine to a...Lexus.

No one knows the future but what gives me hope is new fresh blood coming into the political system and the old dying off. That 2030 ban won’t last because policies and laws change all the time.
