I see where you're coming from but it could also be a tactic thing. Like he knew if he wouldn't do the procedures the guy would've probably go to another surgeon and get work done there - maybe without before and after pictures.
On one hand it was smart. The man felt safe while the surgeon gave the photos to the police so they actually were ahead of him without him knowing.
On the other hand I'm pretty sure that surgeries on your face wouldn't be done without anesthetization so he should have just called the cops instead of doing work and letting him leave???
So yes, he could just be a greedy asshole. But it could also be the case that he tried to do a "smart move" I guess 🤷♀️

If someone is following you, never lead them to your home. Go to a shop, hospital, whatever public building instead.
Especially in Japan - there are police stations all over the place and they take stalking very seriously.
First take 4 consecutive right turns to see that the person is following you and not just on the same route as you.

Well in her case she didn't have a bad plan. Showing him she had 2 other roommates living with her at all times is not a bad idea to scare him off. Not even accepting classes in a public area was foolish.
What she did wrong was going with him to his place.
Ya, Id say it's less about her kindness and more about her street smarts, or lack of. Her ignorance to the ugly world around her made her not consider the idea of someone who could be a predator.
Sadly in her case, biking to her home aka leading him to her home was mistake number one since now he knows where you live and mistake number 2, going into his house. She barely knew the guy and was enticed by the money offer, truth is if the guy was going to give her the money she could of waited in the cab or waited outside for him to come out. If he didn't come out , the just accept that you aren't getting the money.
It's just a shame that lapse in judgements such as the temptation of a paycheck are enough for people to make a mistake that would end up costing their lives. If you ever have a bad vibe about someone, never follow them to a locale that would leave you defensless.
If someone is ever following you and you can't lose them, DO NOT go home. Take them somewhere very public and well recorded. A mall, a police station, literally anywhere besides your house.
I don't trust the police in my area, but I live 10 mins away from the military base my spouse is stationed at, thats what I use. You have to have a military ID to get in and the dudes guarding the gate have more than enough ability to take care of the problem, if the problem even bothered to follow me to the gate

Exactly, most buildings have a security guard at the entrance. I always go into buildings and head straight for the security guards desk. I also ask them for directions when I am lost.

The fact that Lindsay’s dad asked for help with the mafia since he knew that Japanese police were unsuccessful, he was desperate to see who killed his dear daughter. He didn’t deserve to lose his daughter, he seems to cherish his daughter so much. Must be heavy for him and his family to accept the tragedy:(

I briefly took a self-defense class a while back and one of the things that stuck with me was the instructor saying to beware of anyone who doesn’t respect a “no” for an answer. Not only sexually, but anything you say no to doing anything, if a person insists beyond comfort, it’s time to put the foot down and go.

Yes, people might have an advantage over you, but it doesn't mean they're superhuman. Humans have a massive amount of weak spots and if you know what you're doing you can take advantage of them. The 6'3" 230 pound incel probably wouldn't like a compass jabbed in his eye any more than anyone else would, and probably didn't train his balls to handle fingernails being dug into them.
The problem is most people DON'T know how to fight. It's a good idea to learn how to fight so that you don't waste your time and energy in a fight to the death.
As horrific as this is, can we all just take a moment to appreciate that Lindsay's dad realized that the Japanese police were useless, went to Japan himself, and asked the yakuza to find the guy? That dude has some balls of steel.

Yakuzas dont get involved with civilians, but if civilians want to do business with them then they stop being civilians and now they are clients or bussines partners. Fail to meet Yakuza's demands and it could turn ugly for the client.
Anyway, the Yakuza probably declined the dad's request. This case was very public and it could bring unwanted attention.
The Japanese police aren't used to dealing with stuff like this because crime in japan is very low and most crime is small things like shoplifting or assault. Murder isn't as common as it is in America or London

This is basically my worst nightmare whenever I'm in a foreign country. You can't tell if it's cultural and truly creepy so you end up being nice and ignoring your gut. My sympathies for Lindsay's family and friends. Those 4 years must've been torture. Props to her dad for approaching the Yakuza.

So, I am NOT blaming Lindsey for what happened to her, I want to make a different point. In case you ever find yourself being followed, under no circumstances do you go directly home. This is the worst thing you can do. What you do instead is to first try and lose the person yourself and if that doesn't work, you immediately contact the authorities. They will not be able to arrest the person in most cases but they will be able to hold them for a certain amount of time which then allows you to leave safely.
You still might want to avoid going home directly. Maybe visit a museum or something like that, anything public that has a entrance fee and cameras is good.
After you reach home safely, make a detailed note of what happened, what the person looked like and such. Share it with family and friends.
For the next couple of weeks, avoid the place of the encounter under all circumstances or never visit the place alone. Make sure somebody is with you and never take a direct route to that place or from it back home.
Yes, I was surprised she actually showed her creepy pursuer where she lived. I expected she would stop at a public place and just yell at him and shame him into sodding off.

But yeah, you should see if that actually antagonizes them. It worked for me once. He got embarrassed and left. But it might not work for another.

He did everything in his power to manipulate her and it worked. That is meticulous planning and coercing to its finest. Most do not want something complicated and fighty they want easy and fast. Make it hard as Hell! Lindsay's father is a badass. The fact that he approached the Yakuza for answers. Shows a strong individual. However, he was kind enough to present a gift. Which I believe shows respect. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Naturally, if someone shows respect. They deserve respect.

Rather than respect it is meant to get goodwill. Criminal organizations similar to the mafia and the Yakuza operate on a sort of honor system. He wanted the criminals to like him and feel respected but not necessarily because he actually respected them

He offered the gift but they said there was no need, as they would help him because they also had daughters. He explained his daughter had told him it was a custom to give gifts when meeting friends in Japan, and they then accepted the whisky. They told him that they would watch for Ichihashi in their territory and if they found him they would deal with it. They also let her father hand out flyers on a very busy pedestrian crossing that was in their territory & escorted him there so that he could do it. While giving out the flyers a group of young boys refused to take any and pushed past him. 10 minutes later the boys came back, apologised and took the flyers.

If it's any comfort, those 4 years on the run were probably the worst of his life. Always on edge, looking behind is back with no one to trust or help him living in miserable conditions
Currently teaching English in Nagoya right now so this video hits close to home.
In general, Japan is a very safe country based on my personal experience as a woman, but when crimes do happen (not petty ones), it's always the most messed up and perverted type of crimes. I'm still shaken at the fact that he tried to decompose her body on his own balcony and even seeded the soil for flowers to grow where her remains will become the fertilizer. Chills.
Here in Korea, when a guy asks you for water, it’s his way of seeing if he can come inside to sleep with you. Most Korean women know this and most foreigners do not. I know this happened in Japan, but Asian culture is a lot less direct about sexual things...

@@PanSzawu harassment on all levels of society here is pretty normal. From severe bullying at schools to workplace harassment. This week a Toyota employee ended his life because of harassment. The problem is nobody helps you, you are supposed to respect the superiors/seniors, and that is also the submissive behavior expected of girls in general. There is a lot of abuse and the mentality of men towards women is really sick.

This and Yunko Furuta's case have convinced me of the complete ineptitude of Japanese authorities. Granted, they are a very peaceful country with a very low crime rate, but this has resulted in the police becoming stagnant and complacent to a negligent degree.
I think they tend to ignore “foreigners” crimes especially. This is one of many that I’ve heard of…..truly sad.

@@jamesmaier5544 4H i think. The first 2 came, then waited 1H for 5 more to come, and 3 more hours for the last 2 ^^. Japan has this culture of shame, that says that even if you are innocent, you tend to recognize everything and just submit. Hese public apologizies for anything and everything are really something. They hated Carlos Gohsn because he ran away without taking responsability (whether he was guilty or not was irrelevant). They do not prosecute everyone they put under arrest, but there is a 98% ratio of people convicted if they do end up prosecuted in Japan. Trials are just formalities. The inquiry is what determines your culpability rather the trial, and you have no right to have an attorney before the trial. So, they will try to make you say you are culprit by all means possible. Remember the taxi. He thought that everything had to be fine, or maybe, convinced himself that it was not his problem and tried to avoid any kind of trouble for himself. Before the guy in the video said that he left, i already knew for sure he would leave within minutes. It was obvious. There is always this idea that "it must be nothing". I bet they never really expected anything going on, and even if something did, it was nothing big. Probably the policemen never saw more than petty theft in all their years in the Police. There are reasons why they don't have guns. Well, but now, even in Europe, our Police don't always have guns. So, there are all kinds of little differences in Japan that contribute to explain this fiasco, and i must say, i didn't expect things to unfold any differently.

yakuza is actually a semi-legit business in japan, that is, they don't really need to hide as other mobs do, the goverment recognizes mafia clans and they do certain business publicly and with goverment blessing, so among the world's mafias the yakuza are among the tamest and easier to ask for help, and by tamest I don't mean they are not dangerous, they are actually among the most dangerous in the world, just more approachable and more, shall we say, civilized.

I lived in Japan and worked for the same company as Lindsay when this happened. The police were absolutely useless and there is no way he wasn’t assisted by his parents while on the run. It’s very taboo to be outside barefoot and that was always a point that annoyed me. He would have been VERY obvious and he should never have got as far as he did. There was somewhat a mentality amongst my students and Japanese people around me in general that it was kind of understandable that he did it as she was so beautiful and she did go back to his house. The general belief being that he just wanted to rape her and killed her in accident. It was a really shitty time and I felt really unsupported by the company and unsafe in general after seeing how people reacted. The perpetrator has a fan club and is fetishised by some women in Japan. I hope he rots in hell.
Remember: if someone makes you feel unnerved, trust the feeling and avoid that person. It's such a primal fear that most seem to ignore.

Exactly one time I went on a date with a man I met online we met at a restaurant and not only was he a completely different person than the pictures he had on his profile.... he was 5 times older than me. He proceeded to apologize for the fake photos and shmoozing about how he did it to just get a chance with someone as beautiful as me. Told me he served the military for over 10 years and loved to cook. He asked me if we could go back to his apartment so we could get his wallet to pay for the food... I paid for the food and secretly texted my sister to call me and say I needed to leave as an emergency. After the date I blocked him on everything and for several weeks he went on to make fake profiles asking what he did wrong and begging to meet up again. His final message showed his true colors as he cursed me out and said women like me don’t deserve to walk the Earth. I whole heartedly believe if I were to go to his apartment that day he would have muddled me or kidnapped me.

I remember this happening at the time as I only lived 9 miles from her home address in Brandon Coventry U.K. Goes to show that something like this can happen to anyone anywhere, but when it’s close to home it’s even more shocking. She had her whole life ahead of her and to loose her life in this manner was incomprehensible. It’s her family that had to bear the brunt of this and try to continue with their own lives after what happened. How they did I will never know. Being a mum myself I’m not sure I could go on without one of them missing then finding out the consequences, I would want to die along with them. You should never out live any of your children, that is not how the sequence should ever be. My eldest son is now 35, born in 87, Lindsay would have been 38 this year and presumably a mother herself if the course of events hadn’t have happened.

By rehabilitated, they most likely meant inserted into the workforce. Not like released with a firm warning and a slap on the wrist. Even if he should be deemed rehabilitated, his life would still probably remain hell, working from a lower security prison or under extra strict monitoring and sanctions.

Despite her first instinct she still started to have a convo with a stranger who chased her home after already telling him no once... I mean you should always listen to your gut feeling because it tells you the truth. I believe poor Lindsay just tried to be a good, kind, helpful girl and as such she repressed her first, very real and very true instinct which alarmed her and caused her to escape and run away from the situation at the first place.
This case reminded me how important it is to not fall into societal norms: girls are normally raised to be kind, pretty and obedient, but this kind of upbringing teaches us nothing about selfpreservation, which includes saying no and how to stick by those nos. Instead of raising standard good girls who eventually and somehow fall into victimhood, we should rather encourage them to have and keep boundaries, especially at times when somebody is pushing, forcing them to do something they absolutely don't want to. The world is a jungle and we have to learn how to keep ourselves safe so at least we have a chance in life...

Writing a book about how you murdered someone and nearly got away with it then saying to the parents you can have the money from the book speaks VOLUMES of why he can’t be rehabilitated and shouldn’t be set free.
Seems like he was trying to make amends however he could it'd be alot different if he was just trying to profit from it, he obviously had something wrong with him. I don't think he had any remorse as writing the book was probably motivated by vanity and narcissistic delusions of grandeur but at least him giving the money from its sales to the family kind of acknowledged that he took something precious from the family.
It's also something cultural in Japan to offer some kind of payment to the family of someone they harmed in someway.

I had the worst gut instinct when I used to work as a lab technician and happened to be alone in the laboratory one evening (and at that time there's pretty much no one in any of the lab rooms). a man came in to use our equipment but even after being finished with the analysis he stood there. I couldn't see him bc I was facing away from him (doing my own thing) but I felt the worst feeling, I felt threatened. I quickly remembered "always trust your gut instinct" and stopped what I was doing and almost ran from the laboratory room. next week, same day, same hour, he showed up again but this time I was not alone and that was actually my last week developing my project there. I still don't know if I was in actual danger but I do feel like I was, bc I never felt anything like that, my body was screaming "run"

this is why you should never, ever let some stranger running after you know where you live. Go to the nearest most public space, call the police even though they might not be able to do anything, and just wait until its safe enough to go out again. Call a friend, relative or just an acquaintance and dont come back to your house, no matter what. Until then, I would just probably change places from friend to friend for a week or so until you can go back. (You can go back in broad daylight to your apartment/house with a group of friend to get you stuff and or move out food that can mold.) It looks like a lot, but its better safe than sorry. I was at an adult shop late this one night. When I got into my car to leave I saw this guy look at me and started to drive after me. Every where I went, he followed. I got onto the highway and went as fast as I could and saw an exit ramp. As soon as I got to the exit I made a quick turn at the last moment so that he wouldn't be able to. It was a scary yet exiting experience.
I had to live in downtown Denver for a bit. When I was almost back home after walking my dogs, a guy, who definitely waited for me to come back, turned his truck on and followed me to ask how I was doing. I was reaaallly close to home and I remembered not to walk in in case he waited for me. I was scared and almost called my husband to check or called out to another guy in the alley to look for me. It was the first time this happened to me and I still get grossed out
The dude never followed me again but I just fucking moved because of stalking. I would very much like a break from creeps

You really can't be complacent at all these days. Even in broad daylight, you can get attacked/hurt/harassed, even stalked - and it can happen all too quickly, you couldn't even react. Know how to defend yourself, have someone as a contact and try to be vigilant for your own safety. Stay safe everyone!
Thanks Adrian for the Vietnamese coffee clip. This one was scary. The fact that this guy ran all the way to her house is crazy! I think most of the time criminals take advantage of their victim's kind nature. I also think Lindsay was unusually accommodating because she was a foreigner and didn't want to be rude. One thing that I am learning from all these cases is always trust your INSTINCTS.

The Yakuza aren't murderers. Infact, they gave a bodyguard service to the Indonesian president when he visited Japan. Nowadays the Yakuza aren't dangerous.
They are business people and they are loyal to each other. The only crime they did were unlawful debt collection, prostitution, drugs, and other things which, though forbidden by law, are still common and rarely pressucuted.

"Only"? That does not justify their crimeS (because its PLURAL), especially unlawful debt collection. Also, we should not glorify the culture of impunity, that does not make them good people. Crimes are crimes and should be sanctioned by the state's respective laws if we want to make a society that is livable and safe for everone. Plus, if these crimes are "rarely PROSECUTED", then the state itself sabotages
the safety of the people whom it swore to protect as mandated by its constitution. I mean really... if I were a resident of a specific country where the culture of impunity thrives, I would not feel safe and would want to leave as soon as possible.
You obviously dont even know what the Yakuza is. Its a legal organization, most people dont know it. And they have strict rules and they hate being compared to italian or mexican mafia.
