Seriously. A child asks you for help and you just...ignore her? What the hell is wrong with those people? Although I also found it strange that Ana just went back to Kabu's house instead of continuing to search for help, but I guess psychological conditioning can do strange things to a person's mind.

What's sad is that as a kid I was taught that if I needed help to find a woman with a child to ask. That woman looked like someone safe to a defenseless kid but all she did was think about herself... I hope she heard that story and feels bad for not offering any type of assistance at all
Just because she wasn't tortured, assaulted or murdered, doesn't mean she didn't suffer a serious trauma. Two years of your life stolen at such a precious age. Just a kid. I'm hoping she can live a normal life. And recover completely .
Not tortured? The fucker spiked her drink or food with goddamn datura, a deliriant which causes hallucinations that lasts days, which even a person who knows they are taking the drug cant distinguish from reality and which often are nightmarish. Not only that but he subjected her to extensive psychological torture too. She was undoubebtly seriously tortured for years.
Yeah, but I'm just really glad she wasn't physically and sexually harmed. Very rarely these cases end like this. All the horrific things we hear watching these documentaries and following these cases it's good to hear. I hope she is doing well now after all that and the trauma and ptsd, atleast we can say and hope that.

@@beatnik6806Mental and emotional abuse hurts and causes just as much, if not more damage than physical and/or sexual abuse. All abuse is extremely traumatic.
Yup, as horrible as that is she otherwise had one of the best possible results I’ve seen it’s really rare they’re found alive on top of unassaulted especially after such a long time. I really hope she recovers well and can get back to enjoying her life to the fullest.
This reminds me of this one girl who was kidnapped off her bike by these 2-3 guys who proceeded to horrifically torture her to death. This also happened in Japan.

I can't believe that she was ignored by multiple people when she escaped and told that they had bigger problems in their lives. It's just unfathomable how humans can be so heartless.

It's wild that she had access to the internet and could see her parents were looking for her, but still be convinced that she was unwanted. Goes to show the power of psychological manipulation.
@@AstarionWifey Combination of spiked drinks, failed attempts of running away, and indoctrination can damage a psyche this severely. Although considering her escape, she might know something's wrong, and over time trying to find the way out.
I'm glad she had internet access. No matter what he was telling her, I'm sure seeing her parents search for her added doubt to the idea that no one cared. Maybe that doubt in what he was saying is what made her call home. Or at least that's what I like to think. Maybe his brainwashing wasn't as effective as he wanted because of it. I may be wrong, but it's something that gives me hope, so I'll cling to the idea. I'm just glad she made it home somewhat safe.
This is devastating that 2 people refused to help a child who was needing/asking for help. Not to mention a mother turning their back! How sad. I am so happy they found her and this ended in a somewhat positive way
If you didn’t see the missing person posters you would just think the kid runaway and is overreacting and they would go back home after.The mother has kids that also needs to be looked after also she doesn’t need to get involved with anyone else’s kids or life. And why is the people not helping her sad, them not helping her is basically nothing compared to what her kidnapper did
@@zeroedits7582 I agree with you in regards to the being turned away from people on the street not being as bad as what the kidnapper did to her.. a rather odd statement to make I must say. However, a kid asking for help.. regardless of them "being a runaway and overreacting" as you say.. shouldn't be turned away. One would at least want to find them help.. like a police station for example. It baffles me that a person would rationalize that a child asking for help is simply "overreacting and most likely a runaway" and not at least try to help them. just a sad person all around to do that.

My brother used to “run away” whenever he didn’t get what he wanted he always overreacted but he would also come back home in a couple of hours. Also there’s a culture in Japan I can’t exactly remember what it is but someone explained it very well in a comment/reply why people in Japan tend to not get involved . Another comment said something similar were they helped a kid somewhere and it was all fake and their wallet was stolen bye the kid

"" don't get involved if it doesn't concern you"" is the biggest reason why the elderly woman and the mother didn't want to help her when she tried to escape. To turn a blind eye is common here in Japan. Although, not everyone does this of course. It happens in other countries as well.
I understand some people don't want to get involved but could never do this myself. Unfortunately Anna chose the wrong people to ask for help. Surely they could have done something? I have personally saved the lives of strangers by recognising they needed help. I could never walk away from someone in need.

I wonder if they'd feel the same way if they were the ones needing help. Do people culturally just not expect anyone to help another person in distress, or are they being immensely selfish (refusing to help others, but expecting others to help them if the roles were reversed)? @@georgina-a I agree with you. I think it just depends on the person not the nationality or country. Some people are shy and lack social skills. There are some very sad cases from all over the world where hindsight would have been very helpful. I don’t think your comment is controversial at all. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve helped people and that’s because I’m fairly confident and very caring. I always try to put myself in the other person’s shoes and hope if I was in need, I would be helped too. A few years ago I encountered a lady walking up a busy road, not on the pavement. It was very hot and she was wearing a big coat and carrying shopping bags. I stopped the busy traffic and made conversation with her. She instantly trusted me and I managed to get her in my car. I knew she was vulnerable but did what I had to do. After a lengthy conversation I managed to return her to her family home. Her sister was so grateful. The following week, her sister recognised me in the local supermarket, she came running over to me with a big bunch of beautiful white roses, my favourite flowers, and thanked me for saving her sister’s life. I often think how different things would have been if I hadn’t been on the road that day, or drove past her like everyone else. I’ve helped so many people during my life and will continue to and my 18 year old son and husband are just as caring as I am.

We need more good people in the world 👍 To be honest, I've always thought the same as you - that kindness is down to the individual (& a variety of individual traits), rather than a culture. But when the OP said that there seemed to be a cultural leaning away from assisting others in Japan, I was interested to know how that worked - whether it was an isolationist idea (like we see in cities, whereas rural villages all seem to pitch in) or whether it was something more deeply ingrained in a very conservative culture. Having never lived there, I was interested in the dynamic. I'm like you, though - if I see someone in need, I help. It's the best feeling, isn't it? It's lovely to read that you have a hubby who thinks similarly and that, together, you've raised a son who is continuing that kindness. That's beautiful 💖 x
I agree with you that he should have had a longer sentence. He not only kidnapped a young girl and held her for years, he robbed her of her innocence by telling her lies about her parents which she ultimately believed. As a mother, I can only imagine the torture that Ana’s parents endured in the time she was missing. If indeed he did have a mental illness, then after he serves his sentence he should be committed to a psychiatric institution where he can be studied like an ‘animal’ as he claimed he was doing to Ana…..for as long as it takes!

This is actually a recurring thing with the Japanese crime stories I have watched so far, they mind their own business TOO MUCH. That if a victim of some form of abuse escapes and asks for help, most of those people will ignore them, shoo them away, not even bothering to call the authorities. Then there are these authorities that also seem so complacent with any reported abuse and are so gullible by the perpetrators that sometimes crimes of this kind will go on for years! And will only take it seriously when they themselves find bodies.
It's no fucking wonder their birth rate is so low. Why on earth would anyone want to bring up a child in a culture like that? It's the same in my country too, we're riddled with sex offenders and pedos and people are surprised that our birth rate keeps going down.
Sounds like China where people never help strangers and look the other way! It's like the bystander effect gone into overdrive in some Asian cultures. Pretty fucking gross cultural norm if you ask me!
Man, that poor girl. I almost started crying when you talked about her going up to two different people asking for help and being turned down. It's refreshing to hear a story with a relatively uplifting ending, the darker ones can get rather depressing after a while.
I was waiting for someone in Kabukicho , Tokyo at exactly when this story was happening. A girl maybe 15 was hanging out and straying a little close to me, there was a guy she was with. I was aware she was totally in my personal space ( Tokyo is crowded yet people manage to keep their face down to provide privacy). Then she directly looked at me and stumbled toward me, crying for help and at the same time hid behind my body, like close and was basically crouching behind me while the guy still followed her. It was so sudden, and I'd thought they were BF/GF. I told him in Japanese, "Go away please GO GO", and he finally did. She was terrified and clamped to my body from behind. This is extremely rare in Japan where ppl don't emote. When the guy has oozed away I asked if she knew him, she said no. He'd been stalking her. I told her to stay where she was, next to me and she clamped onto me shrunk down, and I told her she was safe and looked for police, but police are usually never on TOkyo streets and I knew the girl wouldn't really want to bring attention or cause drama - this is really a common reaction there. Finally her real friend showed up and once I was sure she was happy with the real friend, they left. I would never deny someone coming up to me. Tokyo and its' neighbourhoods are a warren of millions of lives. People's psychological health is not discussed or seen as serious. People only know overwork for little personal gain, and it's a system where your entire personality is as meaningless as a cloud in the sky on the other side of the world. How you personally feel about things is not seen as important.

Now, that being said, I know we have our problems in the west, and I do not agree at all with a lot of the despicable disgusting shit going on here. That being said however, that culture very much disappoints me, and the attitudes of those people from all the comments I've read so far disgust me. Guh...Even as not-a-mom, if a child ran up to me asking for help, I'd happily mama bear and help out without a second thought. To say I'm disappointed in those who she reached out to and turned her away is a vast understatement. Ana's mental fortitude in getting through it all is amazing. I hope through time she will be able to heal. I really enjoy the overall style of videos you make. I would love to see more cases with happy endings. 😊
Completely agree. I wonder how they (the mother and older woman who turned her away) would feel if they suddenly found themselves in an urgent & desperate situation, pleaded for help - & were turned away. I wonder if they'd still think that refusing to help (regardless of reason) was the right thing to do, if it negatively impacted *them* 🤔 Ugh. The sheer selfishness disgusts me.
If a child asked me for help, I would call the police immediately, no questions asked. It's better to call the police and it ending up not being serious than ignoring a child in danger. I have no words to describe just how furious I was hearing that A MOTHER refused to help a child in distress. That mother should be held accountable, as should the old woman.
The women who refused to help her should be ashamed of themselves. Is that what they would want for their own children? Ana should feel proud of herself. Surviving this trauma and setting herself free. I wish her all the best. ❤️
That's 100% how a lot of Japanese people think... A man literally harrassed me on a 30 minute train ride, then grabbed my hair and tried to drag me away with him at the train station, and everyone just avoided eye contact with me and ignored me. Even a dad with a family...I thought he'd be the most likely to step in, but he just looked sad and looked away. I managed to wrench my hair out of the guy's fist and run away...the station guys and police didn't do anything after making the report... the creep didn't scare me the most, it was the helplessness of this happening in public on a Saturday afternoon and no one doing a thing.
Seriously!!! Esp after she said she’d been kidnapped!! I’m guessing it’s a cultural thing where ppl don’t help each other out and mind their own business. Doesn’t excuse what they did ofc. The least they could’ve done was take 5 seconds to call police 🤦♀️
Phew! She ultimately survived, and physically intact too. That’s all that really matters. This is quite rare so let’s celebrate this fact. I wish her a full recovery psychologically and I hope that she goes on to lead full and happy life.
Imagine finding the courage to escape not once, but twice and be rejected when asking for help, how utterly demoralising... Bless her, at least she finally made it home! Hopefully she is able to grow and lead a normal life after that!
As a new mother... this just breaks my heart. My grandmother has a saying, "All children are your children." It really does take a village to raise and protect a child. To tell a child that you can't help them... I can't imagine it. What happens when it's your own reaching out for help? Not to mention she wasn't asking for anything crazy. She just needed the safety of the police and getting to her parents?!? So much relief in hearing that she was reunited with her family.
I'm glad she survived, so sorry for her to have gone through something so awful. Those people who did nothing when she asked for help are awful, I can't imagine ignoring a child asking for help
God I HATE to say this and hope I'm REALLY WRONG but she's likely gonna have problems for the rest of her life. The more they learn about the brain, the more they understand that actual structure can be altered by events like this. It's very hard to work with. But I sincerely hope she beats the odds and has a great life.
I saw an experiment where a kid just sat alone on a bench without saying anything, and without fail an adult would eventually come and ask if they were okay and needed help. The fact that two adults turned away a kid actively seeking help is just…it’s very difficult for me to understand.
I think it's all about energy... a kid alone on a bench doesn't look or feel threatening..energy is calm and gentle..ppl notice vulnerable child and approach easily.. if someone had just escaped a traumatic experience, the energy is frantic due to panic state.. if someone runs to another in that state, ppl are more likely to resist/be on defense bc they dont know who what or why she is in this state.. not everyone knows how or has the capacity to figure it out/help
Been seeing those videos on UA-cam a lot lately. Most people I've seen who were in the US helped the child, Men and women. Not sure about other countries but the ones I've seen have taken place in the US.
@reinsama5436 It has to be a cultural thing then because 80% turning away a clearly distressed child actively seeking help would just never happen in any place I’ve lived.
I'm so glad to hear the story of a case where the victim made it out alive. Unfortunately Ana was not unscathed of course, the mental scars will be there for many years to come, but at least she's got the ability to pick up and move on to something better, unlike many of those who this channel has discussed before. Way sadder imo Sick individuals are gonna be sick anywhere in the world but the fact that apparantly an entire countries mentality is "mind your own business" to this degree is incredibly horrifying to me
@@damianbouras NOt justifying it but it makes sense if the people she asked were old generations who lived under the poverty times in Japan after WWII in those situations people tend to keep an eye over their shoulders, the grandmother probably was indoctrinated by the Empire's military propaganda and subsequent shame campaign. Furthermore, stemming from a pretty damn brutal history of civil wars, executions, and authoritarian rulers for over a thousand years, where minding your business WILL become your problem (or your life).
yep, unfortunatly, that's a huge problem in japan. "mind your own business". i heard a story of an old man tripping and hitting his head on a brick ledge, and people were walking around him. the person who was telling the story was not from japan, so with the little japanese they knew, they whispered to him "大丈夫？" and tried to get help. he was alright in the end, his wife came over and helped.
@@techSoldier141 I remember several incidents in China about that. However, it turned out that because of poorly written laws and social norms. The norm is that you would only help out someone who was hurt because it was your fault in the first place and you are only saving face by helping them. What also didn't help matters was whenever people were assisted in goodwill, the hurt person sues the helper and usually wins. If the person was disabled say from a fall, the loser has to pay ALL medical costs for as long as the person lives, which is why sometimes you see people just kill someone instead since you pay for the funeral costs instead. The CCP realized how poorly this reflects on Chinese society in the modern world and passed legislation for Good Samaritan law in 2017. The CCP also revised the law regarding payouts. However, since the laws are still new many people operate under the assumption they will get sued if they help someone (yes lawsuits keep on happening even after the passing of the law).
As a 7 year old, I once had to ask a stranger for help after I got hopelessly lost - an elderly woman, who took me back to her daughter's house to call the police. Someone who I'll never forget and will always be very grateful to. I can't imagine how it must have felt for Ana, a child being turned down when she cried out for help, especially after the trauma she was going through which was like a 1000 times worse than a 7 year old getting lost.
Yep he's the awesomest. He always brings the class. I can't believe he's skyrocketed up to 1.5 million subs so fast....oh wait a minute...yes I can. The only other creators I've seen move this fast are ThatChapter and MrBallen and Adrian is definitely top tier material.
As horrible as her experience was, I am SO glad there was a happy ending! Please do more with a happy ending. Many times all I want is closure in a case, whether justice is served or some kind of ending like this one. These kind of cases give me a glimmer of joy. Very happy her parents got her back!
Yeah but thankfully not as bad as the youngest Japanese serial killer, the Junko Furuta killers or the Otaku Killer. Now those ones really traumatised me.
I think it's partly because he's been by himself his own life with probably bad past of ppl finding him too weird that led to him abducting a cute girl and maybe he was trying to groom her into his ideal lover. Which was interesting coz he didnt even sexually assaulted her once throughout the 2 years of captivity.

How can anyone turn away a child or anyone for that matter who says they have been kidnapped and need help?! I mean all they had to do is contact the authorities. I’m surprised no one recognized her from the news. Good to hear a case with a happy ending. I hope Anna is always surrounded with love and support.
I can tell you from experience that the psychological damage is worse than the physical. Wounds of the body will heal, wounds of the mind are way harder to heal and sometimes impossible

I was thinking about Junko. I cannot even imagine the case was a real human, and not in the movies. Also I don't understand why these perpetrators are willing to do such things with their eyes opened. I'd shake at the sight of blood honestly
A story with a "happy" ending. I literally have goose bumps right now. Amidst all the dreadfull crime stories on youtube, it's good to hear about a happy ending story. *So YES, please more stories with happy endings* 😊 I really hope she'll recover fully after what was done to her. I can't help but notice how CLEAN the streets of Japan are. The streets look as if they were polished!
I was thinking it was a relief, rather than happy. No doubt that's what you meant by "happy". It's a better ending than most cases we hear about. I went to Japan 25 years ago and never saw one piece of trash. Evidently, it's still the same.
It's the difference in culture in Asia, you never know who is involved with criminally-focused people, even children are used for these plots in a lot of places nowadays by whoever their guardian is. Thailand for example has been going on for years on a campaign of heart-touching marketing ads and videos to enforce morals in citizens because of how cold they are towards strangers.

I'm so glad she managed to escape. It's heartbreaking that no one helped her before when she got out. It really is nice to have a happy ending to a case, and I hope she's doing great wherever she is in her life
It was nice to hear a story with a happier ending. I’m glad Anna made it out alive. I’m sure she’s still dealing with the consequences, but, it’s nice to know she’s back with her parents. I hope she is doing well.
The fact that no one helped her and she suffers from PTSD is horrible. However, I am so happy to know she was able to be reunited with her parents, I hope wherever she is she’s doing better and is living a good life
I am SO relieved that she actually survived!!! I am even happier that, given this was still EXTREMELY debilitating and wrong, she was not physically harmed and kept relatively well. I almost cried with happiness when you described her mom hearing her voice after all this time and then her getting safely to the police. I really enjoyed the happy ending and the way you told the story. It had a certain suspense without sensationalizing it and remaining extremely respectful to "Anna" (ie- not downplaying her ordeal at all and the seriousness of it, even without the horrific abuse we would have expected). Thank you!
That poor girl😔12 years sounds like a slap on the wrist! Like he literally only has 5 years left before he's released into the wild! He was crazy enough to do that once, I don't think he'll be "fixed" in that amount of time. Considering he had been thinking about it since his younger years, I wouldn't doubt it's still an ongoing obsession. Thanks, Adrian...you tell us stories that normally would be swept under the rug. I’m so happy Ana is alive and well! Of course, as others have said in the comments, the mental scars are something she unfortunately will have to live with and work on getting past but it’s so rare for people to come out of situations like this unscathed! I spent the entire video thinking she was going to die, especially after those two women refused to help her, but to hear that she escape and survived was so great! I seriously wish her all the best and pray she’s able to heal so that she can live a happy, whole life!
I love the "happy endings" ones but your respect for the places and victims is always top-notch. Bless all the "Jane Doe's" of the world and give them peace.
More stories that turn out ok, please! It is wonderful to hear about a smart survivor who never gave up. It’s sad that she suffered mental health issues but I can’t imagine the joy the parents had to be reunited with their child.

as a rape survivor i was for a second so incredibly relieved when you said that this 13 year old child didn't have to suffer such a fate (which is almost unheard of in these cases) but of course what he did to her isn't any 'better' in ANY way. It's just as or even more traumatic (don't need to compare), and even in a similar way. he still completely took her bodily autonomy which is so jarring. i don't even want to imagine what she went though. I'm just so glad to hear she's alive and i hope she can heal as much as possible.
I'm also a survivor. I was locked up too but for a day until I escaped, so I can imagine some of the horror she went through and I'll tell you, the thought of not getting out of there alive still haunts me. I'm still glad she didn't have to go through SA and assault but she will most likely have ptsd for the rest of her life, not to mention all the other possible mental damage she might have recieved, as she was locked up for over 2 years and as a young teenager, who's still developing. I still can't go futher than to my car and back when it's dark and it's been 9 years
Exactly. Just because a really messed up situation can maybe get even worse doesn't mean it's not already REALLY bad. I hope she gets all the help and love she deserves and needs, and finds a way to have a fulfilling and happy life despite the absolute horror she experienced.

It really is such a relief to hear that she was able to escape and that she wasn't SA'd or beaten in her captivity. I hope she's able to recover and know how much people care about her. Despite the two people unwilling to help her, that she still kept trying and she was able to see the efforts her parents and local community were making to find her via the internet is really huge. It's what makes me think she'll be okay, even if it's a long and painful road.
I like that you featured a story with a positive ending. Less than 10 years later, she is now a young woman and I hope that adulthood is treating her more kindly.

I agree, although I’d say recovered “as much as is possible” as you can never really recover mentally from a prolonged trauma like this. Or even those around her that cared and loved her. So, so sad. Especially as the bloke was hardly punished at all.
It is amazing to see this channel grow. I remember when this channel only had subscribers in the tens of thousands. Now its 1.5 million. I'm just glad to be along for the ride with many others that are fascinated with true crime.
Anna and I are on the same age. This really terrifies me. I can't imagine being away from home for two years. I really hope he never sees the light of day again. 15 years is not enough.

It is refreshing to watch a story with a positive ending. It’s important to tell the ones that don’t end this way, but once in a while it’s good to have ones like this. The message to Ana at the end made me a little teary 🥹
What a weird, weird case. I am very glad that she came out of it physically unharmed. I think the mental harm is even harder to get over sometimes though.
Can we get more stories of survivors? I think it would be super cool to have their interviews post escape included to paint a full circle. I think it raises the mood a little and helps to show just how strong the human spirit is and the will to live.

This is as close to ethical true crime content as it gets. Nonexploitative, focused mostly on the victims, delivered with respect and reverence for those most effected, and an emphasis on prevention of future crimes.
Eh, it could be a lot more ethical if he were to donate proceeds to charities and organisations that help those affected by crime, such as sexual abuse victims charities, criminal reform charities, etc. Kendell Rae does this all the time, seen as these UA-camrs are making quite a lot of money.
@@scheezy I'm older, when I was young true crime was celebratory of the killers and they would build them up as geniuses. People are more mindful nowadays but it can still get gross in some circles.

This is an odd case. I am so glad she was found "safe" and was able to continue to live her life. Bless her heart I can only imagine the lasting effects of such an ordeal. I did find it interesting how they were able to strip the perpetrator of his degree due to his crime! I've never heard of that before.

In spite being denied twice when she could've been rescued, i'm just glad she made it home by her own courage to do so. The length of time healing from the trauma might not be coming soon or completely, but as just like her father who never lost hope, and her parents behind her back since she came back, we all know she'd recover. We pray for survivors to have their life back to them.
I love the idea of doing a mixture of videos that both end in good endings but also continuing covering cases with tragedies only because both are as important to share those stories and have as much awareness to them as possible
I definitely was expecting a more gruesome case from this title - when I read experiment my mind went to some human centipede body horror shit - so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Ana survived and was not physically harmed. Still, I can’t imagine the toll this has taken on her mental health. I hope she continues to heal and do well.
Why are his words "nobody will come for you. Nobody cares about you. You are all alone." so strikingly similar to what my husband has been telling me ever since we started dating each other back when i was still a teen?? 😳 It's horrible how such words when repeated over and over can make you really disconnect with everyone else and feel safe with the one hurting you the most... I got the courage to escape when i saw that he was even treating our baby like that.. But it's taking time to recover from it as his words still have so much power over me

I would honestly love more stories with happy endings. I know when it comes to crime, that doesn't always happen, but it's a relief, and I'd love to know more about how people get out of these types of situations.

@@guts8770 He completely broke her trust in others, made her lose years of her life, denied her of a part of her childhood/teenage years and memories, gave her PTSD, fueled her nightmares for life, etc., he made her not "belong" in society anymore. It's gonna take her decades of therapy and adjusting and she'll most probably never fully recover. But yeah, he sure did no harm, huh ? I can't help but think that people who think that true harm is only physical and have that little empathic are probably also people who mentally damage others. Even if unconsciously.

I’m so happy for Anna and her family to be reunited. May she find endless strength and love on her journey to recovery and at the other end hopefully not too far away create a lifetime of blissful memories. IMO- happy endings give people hope so I think putting them in the mix is important. Missing people too. All stories should be told. Thank you for your professional yet heartfelt approach to these heartbreaking stories. I listen to be aware of the world for my son and to send love to the victims and their families. And in this case, I’m so glad this beautiful family is together again 💗

It's so good to here in one of these terrible stories that Anna escaped this horror, so often these terrible cases end up in heartbreaking tragedy for the victim and their family and friends. We can celebrate Anna's survival and pray for her continued recovery and successful life ahead. The monster who abducted her can rot in jail.

The fucker spiked her drink or food with goddamn datura, a deliriant which causes hallucinations that lasts days, which even a person who knows they are taking the drug cant distinguish from reality and which often are nightmarish. Not only that but he subjected her to extensive psychological torture too. She was undoubebtly seriously tortured for years.

All the horrific things we hear watching these documentaries and following these cases it's good to hear. Yup, as horrible as that is she otherwise had one of the best possible results I’ve seen it’s really rare they’re found alive on top of unassaulted especially after such a long time. I really hope she recovers well and can get back to enjoying her life to the fullest.
This reminds me of this one girl who was kidnapped off her bike by these 2-3 guys who proceeded to horrifically torture her to death. This also happened in Japan.

I'm glad she had internet access. No matter what he was telling her, I'm sure seeing her parents search for her added doubt to the idea that no one cared. Maybe that doubt in what he was saying is what made her call home. Or at least that's what I like to think. Maybe his brainwashing wasn't as effective as he wanted because of it. I may be wrong, but it's something that gives me hope, so I'll cling to the idea. I'm just glad she made it home somewhat safe.
You don’t have to be physically or sexually assaulted to be traumatized. Being kidnapped or held against your will is an assault on its own.
This is devastating that 2 people refused to help a child who was needing/asking for help. Not to mention a mother turning their back! How sad. I am so happy they found her and this ended in a somewhat positive way
If you didn’t see the missing person posters you would just think the kid runaway and is overreacting and they would go back home after.The mother has kids that also needs to be looked after also she doesn’t need to get involved with anyone else’s kids or life. "" don't get involved if it doesn't concern you"" is the biggest reason why the elderly woman and the mother didn't want to help her when she tried to escape. To turn a blind eye is common here in Japan. Although, not everyone does this of course. It happens in other countries as well.
I understand some people don't want to get involved but could never do this myself. Unfortunately Anna chose the wrong people to ask for help. Surely they could have done something? I have personally saved the lives of strangers by recognising they needed help. I could never walk away from someone in need.

@@georgina-a I agree with you. I think it just depends on the person not the nationality or country. Some people are shy and lack social skills. There are some very sad cases from all over the world where hindsight would have been very helpful. I don’t think your comment is controversial at all. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve helped people and that’s because I’m fairly confident and very caring. I always try to put myself in the other person’s shoes and hope if I was in need, I would be helped too. A few years ago I encountered a lady walking up a busy road, not on the pavement. It was very hot and she was wearing a big coat and carrying shopping bags. I stopped the busy traffic and made conversation with her. She instantly trusted me and I managed to get her in my car. I knew she was vulnerable but did what I had to do. After a lengthy conversation I managed to return her to her family home. Her sister was so grateful. The following week, her sister recognised me in the local supermarket, she came running over to me with a big bunch of beautiful white roses, my favourite flowers, and thanked me for saving her sister’s life. I often think how different things would have been if I hadn’t been on the road that day, or drove past her like everyone else. I’ve helped so many people during my life and will continue to and my 18 year old son and husband are just as caring as I am.

To be honest, I've always thought the same as you - that kindness is down to the individual (& a variety of individual traits), rather than a culture. But when the OP said that there seemed to be a cultural leaning away from assisting others in Japan, I was interested to know how that worked - whether it was an isolationist idea (like we see in cities, whereas rural villages all seem to pitch in) or whether it was something more deeply ingrained in a very conservative culture. Having never lived there, I was interested in the dynamic.
I'm like you, though - if I see someone in need, I help. It's the best feeling, isn't it? It's lovely to read that you have a hubby who thinks similarly and that, together, you've raised a son who is continuing that kindness. That's beautiful 💖 x

I agree with you that he should have had a longer sentence. He not only kidnapped a young girl and held her for years, he robbed her of her innocence by telling her lies about her parents which she ultimately believed. As a mother, I can only imagine the torture that Ana’s parents endured in the time she was missing. If indeed he did have a mental illness, then after he serves his sentence he should be committed to a psychiatric institution where he can be studied like an ‘animal’ as he claimed he was doing to Ana…..for as long as it takes!

This is actually a recurring thing with the Japanese crime stories I have watched so far, they mind their own business TOO MUCH. That if a victim of some form of abuse escapes and asks for help, most of those people will ignore them, shoo them away, not even bothering to call the authorities. Then there are these authorities that also seem so complacent with any reported abuse and are so gullible by the perpetrators that sometimes crimes of this kind will go on for years! And will only take it seriously when they themselves find bodies.

I was waiting for someone in Kabukicho , Tokyo at exactly when this story was happening. A girl maybe 15 was hanging out and straying a little close to me, there was a guy she was with. I was aware she was totally in my personal space ( Tokyo is crowded yet people manage to keep their face down to provide privacy). Then she directly looked at me and stumbled toward me, crying for help and at the same time hid behind my body, like close and was basically crouching behind me while the guy still followed her. It was so sudden, and I'd thought they were BF/GF. I told him in Japanese, "Go away please GO GO", and he finally did. She was terrified and clamped to my body from behind. This is extremely rare in Japan where ppl don't emote.
When the guy has oozed away I asked if she knew him, she said no. He'd been stalking her. I told her to stay where she was, next to me and she clamped onto me shrunk down, and I told her she was safe and looked for police, but police are usually never on TOkyo streets and I knew the girl wouldn't really want to bring attention or cause drama - this is really a common reaction there. Finally her real friend showed up and once I was sure she was happy with the real friend, they left.
I would never deny someone coming up to me. Tokyo and its' neighbourhoods are a warren of millions of lives. People's psychological health is not discussed or seen as serious. People only know overwork for little personal gain, and it's a system where your entire personality is as meaningless as a cloud in the sky on the other side of the world. How you personally feel about things is not seen as important.

Guh...Even as not-a-mom, if a child ran up to me asking for help, I'd happily mama bear and help out without a second thought. To say I'm disappointed in those who she reached out to and turned her away is a vast understatement. Ana's mental fortitude in getting through it all is amazing. I hope through time she will be able to heal.

If a child asked me for help, I would call the police immediately, no questions asked. It's better to call the police and it ending up not being serious than ignoring a child in danger. I have no words to describe just how furious I was hearing that A MOTHER refused to help a child in distress. That mother should be held accountable, as should the old woman.

That's 100% how a lot of Japanese people think... A man literally harrassed me on a 30 minute train ride, then grabbed my hair and tried to drag me away with him at the train station, and everyone just avoided eye contact with me and ignored me. Even a dad with a family...I thought he'd be the most likely to step in, but he just looked sad and looked away. I managed to wrench my hair out of the guy's fist and run away...the station guys and police didn't do anything after making the report... the creep didn't scare me the most, it was the helplessness of this happening in public on a Saturday afternoon and no one doing a thing.

It really does take a village to raise and protect a child. To tell a child that you can't help them... I can't imagine it. What happens when it's your own reaching out for help? I saw an experiment where a kid just sat alone on a bench without saying anything, and without fail an adult would eventually come and ask if they were okay and needed help. The fact that two adults turned away a kid actively seeking help is just…it’s very difficult for me to understand.
I think it's all about energy... a kid alone on a bench doesn't look or feel threatening..energy is calm and gentle..ppl notice vulnerable child and approach easily.. if someone had just escaped a traumatic experience, the energy is frantic due to panic state.. if someone runs to another in that state, ppl are more likely to resist/be on defense bc they dont know who what or why she is in this state.. not everyone knows how or has the capacity to figure it out/help

Been seeing those videos on UA-cam a lot lately. Most people I've seen who were in the US helped the child, Men and women. Not sure about other countries but the ones I've seen have taken place in the US.

I'm so glad to hear the story of a case where the victim made it out alive. Unfortunately Ana was not unscathed of course, the mental scars will be there for many years to come, but at least she's got the ability to pick up and move on to something better, unlike many of those who this channel has discussed before. Furthermore, stemming from a pretty damn brutal history of civil wars, executions, and authoritarian rulers for over a thousand years, where minding your business WILL become your problem (or your life).

yep, unfortunatly, that's a huge problem in japan. "mind your own business". i heard a story of an old man tripping and hitting his head on a brick ledge, and people were walking around him. the person who was telling the story was not from japan, so with the little japanese they knew, they whispered to him "大丈夫？" and tried to get help. he was alright in the end, his wife came over and helped.
@@techSoldier141 I remember several incidents in China about that. However, it turned out that because of poorly written laws and social norms. The norm is that you would only help out someone who was hurt because it was your fault in the first place and you are only saving face by helping them. What also didn't help matters was whenever people were assisted in goodwill, the hurt person sues the helper and usually wins. If the person was disabled say from a fall, the loser has to pay ALL medical costs for as long as the person lives, which is why sometimes you see people just kill someone instead since you pay for the funeral costs instead.
The CCP realized how poorly this reflects on Chinese society in the modern world and passed legislation for Good Samaritan law in 2017. The CCP also revised the law regarding payouts. However, since the laws are still new many people operate under the assumption they will get sued if they help someone (yes lawsuits keep on happening even after the passing of the law).
As a 7 year old, I once had to ask a stranger for help after I got hopelessly lost - an elderly woman, who took me back to her daughter's house to call the police. Someone who I'll never forget and will always be very grateful to. I can't imagine how it must have felt for Ana, a child being turned down when she cried out for help, especially after the trauma she was going through which was like a 1000 times worse than a 7 year old getting lost.

I think it's partly because he's been by himself his own life with probably bad past of ppl finding him too weird that led to him abducting a cute girl and maybe he was trying to groom her into his ideal lover. Which was interesting coz he didnt even sexually assaulted her once throughout the 2 years of captivity.
I’m so relieved he didn’t physically harm her. She’s so strong for trying to save herself so many times. Reminds me of the Jamie Kloss case. I wish the women she approached for help weren’t so cold. How can anyone turn away a child or anyone for that matter who says they have been kidnapped and need help?! I mean all they had to do is contact the authorities. I’m surprised no one recognized her from the news. Good to hear a case with a happy ending. I hope Anna is always surrounded with love and support.
I can tell you from experience that the psychological damage is worse than the physical. Wounds of the body will heal, wounds of the mind are way harder to heal and sometimes impossible
physical abuse is never always physical cause it also damages the psyche but man... pure psychological torture is way way worse than physical abuse

It's the difference in culture in Asia, you never know who is involved with criminally-focused people, even children are used for these plots in a lot of places nowadays by whoever their guardian is.
Thailand for example has been going on for years on a campaign of heart-touching marketing ads and videos to enforce morals in citizens because of how cold they are towards strangers.

I am SO relieved that she actually survived!!! I am even happier that, given this was still EXTREMELY debilitating and wrong, she was not physically harmed and kept relatively well.
I almost cried with happiness when you described her mom hearing her voice after all this time and then her getting safely to the police.
I really enjoyed the happy ending and the way you told the story. It had a certain suspense without sensationalizing it and remaining extremely respectful to "Anna" (ie- not downplaying her ordeal at all and the seriousness of it, even without the horrific abuse we would have expected).

He was crazy enough to do that once, I don't think he'll be "fixed" in that amount of time. I’m so happy Ana is alive and well! Of course, as others have said in the comments, the mental scars are something she unfortunately will have to live with and work on getting past but it’s so rare for people to come out of situations like this unscathed! I spent the entire video thinking she was going to die, especially after those two women refused to help her, but to hear that she escape and survived was so great! I seriously wish her all the best and pray she’s able to heal so that she can live a happy, whole life!

as a rape survivor i was for a second so incredibly relieved when you said that this 13 year old child didn't have to suffer such a fate (which is almost unheard of in these cases) but of course what he did to her isn't any 'better' in ANY way. It's just as or even more traumatic (don't need to compare), and even in a similar way. he still completely took her bodily autonomy which is so jarring. i don't even want to imagine what she went though. I'm just so glad to hear she's alive and i hope she can heal as much as possible.
I'm also a survivor. I was locked up too but for a day until I escaped, so I can imagine some of the horror she went through and I'll tell you, the thought of not getting out of there alive still haunts me. I'm still glad she didn't have to go through SA and assault but she will most likely have ptsd for the rest of her life, not to mention all the other possible mental damage she might have recieved, as she was locked up for over 2 years and as a young teenager, who's still developing. I still can't go futher than to my car and back when it's dark and it's been 9 years

I hope she gets all the help and love she deserves and needs, and finds a way to have a fulfilling and happy life despite the absolute horror she experienced.

It really is such a relief to hear that she was able to escape and that she wasn't SA'd or beaten in her captivity. I hope she's able to recover and know how much people care about her. Despite the two people unwilling to help her, that she still kept trying and she was able to see the efforts her parents and local community were making to find her via the internet is really huge. It's what makes me think she'll be okay, even if it's a long and painful road.

This is as close to ethical true crime content as it gets. Nonexploitative, focused mostly on the victims, delivered with respect and reverence for those most effected, and an emphasis on prevention of future crimes.

Eh, it could be a lot more ethical if he were to donate proceeds to charities and organisations that help those affected by crime, such as sexual abuse victims charities, criminal reform charities, etc. Kendell Rae does this all the time, seen as these UA-camrs are making quite a lot of money.

This is an odd case. I am so glad she was found "safe" and was able to continue to live her life. Bless her heart I can only imagine the lasting effects of such an ordeal. I did find it interesting how they were able to strip the perpetrator of his degree due to his crime! I've never heard of that before.

In spite being denied twice when she could've been rescued, i'm just glad she made it home by her own courage to do so. The length of time healing from the trauma might not be coming soon or completely, but as just like her father who never lost hope, and her parents behind her back since she came back, we all know she'd recover. We pray for survivors to have their life back to them.
I love the idea of doing a mixture of videos that both end in good endings but also continuing covering cases with tragedies only because both are as important to share those stories and have as much awareness to them as possible
I definitely was expecting a more gruesome case from this title - when I read experiment my mind went to some human centipede body horror shit - so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Ana survived and was not physically harmed. Still, I can’t imagine the toll this has taken on her mental health. I hope she continues to heal and do well.

You are all alone." so strikingly similar to what my husband has been telling me ever since we started dating each other back when i was still a teen?? 😳 It's horrible how such words when repeated over and over can make you really disconnect with everyone else and feel safe with the one hurting you the most... I got the courage to escape when i saw that he was even treating our baby like that.. But it's taking time to recover from it as his words still have so much power over me

He completely broke her trust in others, made her lose years of her life, denied her of a part of her childhood/teenage years and memories, gave her PTSD, fueled her nightmares for life, etc., he made her not "belong" in society anymore. It's gonna take her decades of therapy and adjusting and she'll most probably never fully recover. But yeah, he sure did no harm, huh ?
I can't help but think that people who think that true harm is only physical and have that little empathic are probably also people who mentally damage others. Even if unconsciously.

It's so good to here in one of these terrible stories that Anna escaped this horror, so often these terrible cases end up in heartbreaking tragedy for the victim and their family and friends.
