It is refreshing to see true crime content that is internationally diverse and focused on respect for and the life of the victims primarily, rather than the killer.
We can’t ignore how japanese authorities tried sweeping it under the rug. Their “culture of respect” isn’t what everyone thinks. Their rules of honor and respect are to each other only not foreigners

I have notixed Brits and Americans alike have this weird tendency to assume every country is the same as their own; acting accordingly, often with no regard to local culture and customs, and expecting the locals to act like they do... In reality i wouldnt be surprised Yakuza buddies of that psycho made sure he gets off easily, and knowing how ABSURDLY racist and isolationist Japan was and i guess still is, i wouldn't be suprised he would be found innocent anyway even without Yakuza ties as he was a Japanese citizen and she was a foreigner so everyone would be on his side, police, judges etc.

Easy money is almost always accompanied with harsh consequences. To take this job one has to have loose morals. Unfortunately loosely moraled people usually suffer from severe consequences.
Hostessing is presented to foreigners in Japan as a perfectly safe and legitimate option, like an extra friendly waitress. In reality though, it's sleazy and exploitative and "gaijin" hostesses aren't seen as much better than prostitutes in the eyes of their employers and clients. It disturbs me how many people think it's a harmless summer job.
Women are very naïve. But they want to be treated as adults, so they bear responsibility for their decisions.

Very well said. Many clients even use stimulants so they can get the most "bang for their buck". These men become very unpredictable.
That "job" can be labeled as "sex work" imo, and sex-work is prostitution. There is nothing empowering and honorable in prostitution, it is always an industry of exploitation, nor can it ever be anything else, no matter what the media tells us.
If I’ve learned one thing from watching True Crime stuff, it’s that there’s nothing police everywhere hate having to do more than taking a missing persons report seriously. If you get abducted, ya better have friends who wanna find you.

That's not true. Cops get 10000s of missing case reports daily. There has to be a system of weeding out the ones which are not really missing because it is impossible for police to give 100% attention to every case. Sadly some will slip through and many will waste police resources on runaways or misunderstandings or people being drunk and so on.
Japan gets praised for being a safe place. While I'm sure it generally is, I think that after watching some of your videos, I wonder how much crime is swept under the carpet and ignored especially crimes against women.
I found it suspicious how a traditional conservative nation but the men have a fetish for school "girls". Then I found out how the birthrate went down because of how much people work for little money that there's no time for kids. Then I found out about their hostile justice and 99% conviction rate of prosecutors. It's off my list of places to visit along with Saudi Arabia. Atleast with other places you know the crime rate so you know what you're getting yourself into

That isn't what happened here.
Before the conclusion to this case Japanese police didn't update anyone on active cases, not even family or media. They kept everything compartmented to the team investigating the case.
Why would they do this?
Excellent question thanks for asking.
Answer: they've had to deal with the Yakuza since 1960s disrupting and ruining cases. So they weren't even making the investigations known outside of the team investigating it. This way if information is leaked or something else goes wrong, they know exactly who leaked/screwed up and can immediately replace the officers on the case in an attempt to the keep the case valid and moving.
Now obviously this doesn't always work. Sometimes a case just apart.
In learning during this case that we Westerners want updates on the case so we know what's going on.
They would change the way the way they look at international cases like this one. Honestly before this case it probably didn't occur to them that anyone would want to be informed.
In Japan, citizens rarely even know an investigation is taking place unless they are directly involved.
Now I'm not going to say which was is better because both have more pros than cons.
However I will say in Japan over 90% crime is accurately solved. But in the US for example accurately solved crime is less than half that. Though as to why has more to do with Prosecutors and judges/juries than the police involved. But corruption exist everywhere. So maybe don't assume things until you've done your own research into how others go about solving crime
And never apply the rules or problems of your own country to how another country does something.
Hell even Britain's justice system functions differently than the US system and the US system is actually based off of Britain's system.
Every country has their own methods. Nothing is universalized.

And you realize the fact that citizens there don't know when an investigation is going on, that the police could even more easily sweep things under the rug, right? If no one even knows something happened then they're definitely not going to know when something's hidden away, and no amount of research you do will show that.

My problem with most true crime creators is that they just treat the victims like they weren't people. You have become my favorite creator so quickly because you always remember who they were before they became victims. You treat them with so much respect

I float between Truly Criminal and That Chapter amongst a few others because they’re also v accomplished on how they do it and I sometimes appreciate a little humour - it’s never directed at the victims and their memories are always treated with respect.

Hearing stories about Japanese police always irritate me in such a specific way. Like I've seen malice and incompetence from loads of police forces in my time but in Japan there seems to be this overwhelming...like... apathy that really pisses me off. Like the goal isnt to solve anything but to return to "normal" no matter what. Even if that means letting killers or rapists go. Double when its for a foreigner.

I am so sad for all the victims and victim's families. The first 48 hours of a missing person are the most critical and it is horrible that police would not do anything at first. Sounds very similar to many unsolved true crime stories that occur in the US. I wonder what Joji Obara's brothers (and possibly also mother) think of him?

At some point circumstantial evidence becomes overwhelming. This is one of those times, imo.
As a parent and human being I can't imagine even entertaining the idea of taking money in exchange for not pursuing a murderer. What her father did makes me sick to my stomach.

You should read “People Who Eat Darkness” by Richard Lloyd Parry. It’s an excellent coverage of the Lucie Blackman case, and the reasons the father gives for accepting the money are very reasonable. Don’t condemn Lucie’s dad out of hand; he’s a decent man who cared deeply about his daughter.

Living in Japan can be great fun because it's such an unusual and exotic place. But when things go wrong and you need the police or justice, you learn that the unusual and the 'exotic' side of Japan goes way, way deeper than you could ever imagine and that you're actually living through the looking glass, in a very dark, very odd country, with very dark and very odd ways.
Yeah I dunno about all that since I've never been to Japan although I would love to go but I have heard MANY MANY stories about westerners (mostly women) being murdered or going missing in Japan.

Free money who wouldn’t accept
Legal fees add up very quickly, and private investigators sure aren’t cheap. They had a lot of expenses to cover, it’s pretty justifiable, especially when he’s already aware the mother refused the money and will continue to pursue sentencing… the $450k could be used to cover legal expenses incurred as a result of this waste of oxygen’s crimes. It won’t bring back their daughter, but it will prevent the financial crippling of the family that are still alive. Not to mention Joji had 10 decades of assaults on video and another murder charge, there was next to 0 chance he’d receive anything other than a life sentence, what difference does it make if he receives another sentence on top of a life sentence? Everyone knows Joji was guilty of that murder, they can’t sentence him more harshly than he has already been and the dad has an opportunity to cover all legal expenses incurred, why wouldn’t he take the money?

I've been living in Japan, Tokyo for almost 3 years now and I still can't wrap my head around hostesses and cabarets jobs, Japanese schoolgirls do it as a part-time job and let's not even talk about prostitution, but it's actually scary. Like yeah I feel super safe in Tokyo and at night, compared to Europe and Paris especially but gods! Stalking, domestic violence, rape and things like that are SO overlooked by Japanese forces and police! We know that even if we go make a report or something it won't help, they just look at you and says "well then move out" if you're being stalked for example. Ugh, I know nowhere is perfect but that's messed up

It's easy to have low crime stats and good clearance rates if you don't record or report the former and only prosecute slam-dunks (after conditions and treatment in custody which would be illegal in the US and most Western countries) for the latter.

Alot of japanese women (+85%) end up working or have worked in these places during their lives. there's a reason why so many japanese men dont want to have any relationships anymore.

I notice quite often that a lot of these murder cases are either unsolved or solved decades later and it's mainly because of police incompetence. It angers me so much. Also, congrats on 1M!! Keep doing what you're doing, 2M is right around the corner ;)

Are you saying... office job people never get killed ? It's legit the first crime on this channel where the victim was in this kind of situations. It's always just people living a normal life until one weirdo kills them. Stop thinking people who get raped, assaulted, attacked or killed PROVOKED it FFS.
And yes, she indeed chose a shady, dangerous work and it certainly wasn't a smart decision. But at the end of the day it's still the murderer's fault, not hers, because he's the one raping and killing. People get assaulted even in public, even when in what should be a "safe" environment (like school, work, a family member's home, their own home...), stop thinking the victims called for it.
Almost all crimes happen to random lambda people who haven't done anything bad, haven't put themselves in a bad situation or anything. You're either naive or completely stupid if you still don't realize that criminals are the ones setting up the crime, not the victim.
I remember taking a keen interest in this case during the long fight for justice. Her father's acceptance of the "bribe" horrified me. It was a relief when he was finally declared guilty. She fell into a trap, which many innocent woman had done. She met a monster.
Late to commenting but I have to say, when you first popped up I was thinking how silly yet charming the coffee house theme was to the true crime genre. And yet I love it. I am an avid coffee and tea drinker and whenever I go to watch one of your videos and hear you say to grab a coffee I always realize I already have one lol. Thanks for being awesome!

I'm glad that you covered this case. "People who eat darkness" is an excellent book written by a British journalist who was following this case closely and at some point even received threats for it. So many details in there, impossible to cover in a 25 minute video. An unbelievable well written book, that reads like fiction. Sadly, it's not!

The book is a page turner and I promise you won't forget the experience of reading it. As I said before, the only think I hate about the book is that it's not fiction. You will appreciate the writer and the profession of journalism.
There's a book about this case, written by a man who has lived in Asia for years. It's called The People Who Eat Darkness. I can't recall the author's name, but it's very good and gives a good insight into the role of hostesses in bars like The Casablanca.

When it comes to cases like that, Japanese police is still notoriously incompetent. Four years ago my friends co-ed was r@*ed by her date. They had few amazing dates prior and she trusted the guy enough to invite him for a coffee at her flat. Once he was in, the mask was off and he forced himself on her. She went to the hospital for a medical statement and then to the police. Police said, her inviting him equals concent and didn't even bother to question him. She tryed of lawyer up, but was told that cases in Japan hardly get convictions unless the quilt can be 100 per cent proven and procecurots won't go with her case.

I’ve seen a lot of true crime videos, but this feels different. You give a human aspect, focusing on the victims and a calmer tone in every video, while the other crime videos are more threatning and have a dark tone focusing more on the criminals and their mo. I am a fan since 2021 an I feel comfortable in your channel
Most True Crime channels try unnecessarily hard to come off as scary and put far too much focus on the criminals I think Adrian understands these crimes are disturbing enough without the horror voice and effects

You sound so genuine in every single one of these cases, always showing compassion for the victims and their families. It's one of my favorite things about your narration; other true crime channels are in it for the shock value and horror of it without regard for the victims, but you show that these crimes are committed by actual people who lived mostly normal lives against people who truly deserved none of it. It helps put a real perspective into everything and makes one realize that these aren't all just preventable situations - people can be vile and have a method to their atrocities, which is why there are so many victims (this goes for the many, many domestic violence cases that are out there as well). Your compassion makes all of these cases strangely calming to listen to, while also letting us feel that same compassion and sadness for people who truly didn't deserve to lose their lives like this.

I only wish the neighbour had called the police when they heard the shouting, rather than a day later. But I know how paralysing that kind of fear and concern can be, and how the brain will try to come up with any explanation other than "something is seriously wrong", to keep you sane. Also id have thought the hospitals would've tried to connect Joji to an emergency line for an ambulance - maybe they did and he just hung up every time.

It’s more like hush money but if there is no contract or the contract requiring you to stay quiet has loopholes then you should take his money every time.
In a hypothetical situation, this man killed your child. You can:
A) leave him with half a million dollars to fight his case and maybe get away with it.
B) take his half a million dollars, bankrupt the man and then spend the money helping to make sure he never sees the light of day as well as setting up a charity and services to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else’s child.
If you have to sign a contract that is airtight and says you won’t continue to prosecute well then that’s pretty despicable but you could still take the money and let your wife send his ass to jail.
I’d much rather he was locked up and broke than locked up with half a million to make his time comfy.
I’m not talking directly about this situation. I’m talking about a hypothetical situation.
Even if you fundamentally disagree with all of this you should still do anything except leave him with his money.
