The tragedy in this incident gets even worse. Earlier that season, Patrick Roy decided to withdraw from consideration from the 2002 Canadian Olympic team in order to "focus on the NHL playoffs". This play meant that he got neither the Olympics nor the Stanley Cup, while the two guys combining for this goal, Yzerman and Shanahan, got both Olympic Gold AND the Stanley Cup that year.

As a Wings fan who was 13 in 2002, Games 6 and 7 of this series are my two favorite games in sports history. Game 6 was so tense and competitive, and the Statue of Liberty moment was beautiful, but the tension came right back for the remainder of the game. That was also the game where the Avs coach tried to get a 5 on 3 power play by accusing Hasek of having an illegal stick, only to be proven wrong.
So Game 6 was a satisfying, skin-of-the-teeth win against a worthy rival (with two key moments of humiliation for them), and then Game 7 was just a party. By late in the first period, any tension was gone, every Wings fan realized the team was going to the Finals as heavy favorites, and we could just celebrate. I still remember the sarcastic cheers when Roy made a routine save. Plus, with these two games, Hasek tied, then surpassed the record for shutouts in a playoff run.
    Thanks for the throwback!

I am not entirely joking when I say that you could make a wing in the Hockey Hall of Fame out of the rosters of those two teams alone that year. A lot of people note that the Wings will probably have 10 Hall of Famers at the end of the day on that roster, but the Avs have four, and three that at least deserve to be in the conversation in Adam Foote, Chris Drury, and Darius Kasparaitis. That Avs roster was no joke by any stretch. The only way that series wasn't going seven was with a devastating injury to a key player.

Thanks for the reminder...I guess I drank heavily for 10 years to forget that one for nothing lol. I think that series was the most demoralizing event in my lifetime as a Blues fan. Even worse than letting Hull go. Or Erik Johnson missing an entire year over a golf cart accident and while a competent player still being a huge disappointment for a #1 pick when he came back. Such a tremendous team that year, to this day seeing pictures of Mike Ricci celebrating raises my blood pressure.
What was the butterfly effect of picking Johnson? Obviously letting Toews, Staal, and Backstrom (or even Kessel) go in favor of EJ is a BIG "what if..." Chris Stewart got us...Ryan Miller? That's a rough one... Shattenkirk got us Zach Sanford, eh, I'll call that one "not bad." But thank god they didn't take the 71st pick that year, Brad Marchand. I wouldn't want to live in a world where I cheer for that rat bastard.

    • @Rodanguirus

Those first three games of the '02 playoffs were terrifying. As a young Wings fan at the time, that series was my proper introduction to the Canucks, and I've always given them a healthy respect.
It's my belief that that series and that season gave many Wings fans (and possibly many members of the Wings organization as well) the idea that they could just turn it on at a moment's notice. You saw it throughout the '02 season...they went on dominant streaks and the President's Trophy was never in doubt, but then they'd just take three weeks off. Then they'd be right back and lose maybe two games in a month. They entered those playoffs ice-cold, got roughed up by Vancouver at home, then won nine of their next 10 games. A bunch of Detroiters expected something like that to happen again before they got swept by the Ducks the next year, or knocked out by Calgary in '04, or knocked out in the first round in '06 after finishing with 128 points...
I'm certainly not complaining about the '00s Wings, especially not with the current state of Detroit sports. I'm just saying that '02 team was on another level that even other President's Trophy-winning Wings teams with very similar rosters couldn't replicate.

As a Red Wings fan I will never forget this series. After Forsberg scored in overtime in Game 5 Hasek never let in another goal. But I think the MVP of game 6 was the referee. I think it was Kerry Fraser. At least 90% of the time the referee would have just blown his whistle assuming that Roy had the puck. But the referee made a great call and saw the loose puck and let the play continue. And then to game 7 which I always enjoy watching.

the game 7 goals against Roy: honestly my opinion is you can't really blame him for letting the goals in, the Red Wings were all over the Avs who honestly looked done. Perhaps they were too tired from going the distance in the previous series but the Wings absolutely dominated them in game 7. The defense were beginning to lack energy and began to stand around as the game went on.1st period: 1st goal is deflected, 2nd goal Roy gets a piece of it (maybe should have had that one ), 3rd goal Wings cycling and Robitaille is point blank in the slot, 4th goal Roy saved it the rebound goes to a Wing who buries it...if the Avs D has more energy maybe they get the rebound?2nd period: 5th goal Brett Hull point blank in the slot scores with a screen in front, 6th goal Wings powerplay perfect shot top corner above the glove side after a cross ice pass.Great dominating performance by the Wings.

McCarty would still have scored in Game 6 given Detroit a 1-0 Win then Colorado comes to The Joe to get smacked like they did in Game 7

This was a fun reminder of the glory days for both Red Wings and Colorado. Funiest part of this vidio was the comment about how did the Avs get three power plays in a row (in a 1-0 playoff game)! "What did they have KNIVES?"

Is it possible, that we can see a Steve classic hat picks? I would love to see something from like the 2009 Penguins cup run, the final second Fleury save in Game 7 or the save on the goal-line kick save in Game 6 would be awesome

Grew up in Raleigh; That '02 squad was special, but even during the series, there was a consensus in the area that the Canes were playing with house money against the most stacked Red Wings team in history. At least we have '06.

Patrick Roy was caught winking at Tomas Sandstrom in the 93 finals after a big save... and then there was the time he carried the puck and dangled by Gretzky past center ice... he loved showing off when he thought he could. In his mind he's thinking, "oh yeah, let's one up Stevie Y"

The next Dang-Its should be : 1) Chris Phillips own goal in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final in ‘07 vs Anaheim. 2)Jonathan Quick fail in game 1 in the 1st round vs the Blues in 2013. 3) Dan Boyle own goal in game 1 in 2010 vs Colorado. These are my suggestions

I wouldn't say the Wings "demolished" Carolina in the '02 finals ... a better example would be the '97 finals. THAT was a one-sided ass kicking.

These two games showed why I think Dominik Hasek was a better goalie and player that Roy. While Roy was busy costing his team game 6 and getting lit up in game 7, Hasek was quietly getting back-to-back shutouts against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions. No ego. No cockiness. Pure talent.

    • @JBatesProductions
      @JBatesProductions 3 роки тому

      Super late reply but
1.) Hasek was cocky too, just not as outwardly. You had to be cocky to be a goalie that good under pressure.
2.) Two games doesn't make much of a statement of who was better - You could take any two games from the 1993 stanley cup playoffs and you'd think Roy was the best goalie to ever play by a country mile.
3.) I do agree with Hasek being the greater goalie overall, but man is it close. If you went by "who stole more games for their team" Roy and Hasek would be by far heads and shoulders above the rest

The thing about iconic plays is that it could go both ways... Had he not fumble the save it would be seen as one of the best saves of all time... Conversely, if his famous wink led to that guy scoring on him to win or if JR- and his Blackhawks- silenced his "Ring in ear"- press conference- by winning the playoff series, then those would be seen- too- as some of the all-time "Dang-Its"...
But what makes Roy great is that he wasn't afraid of seizing the moment by risking it all, and he came out victorious- more times than not- with some of the most iconic plays and moments in sports history...
So we can forgive the odd blunder as that is par of the path to greatness, and it doesn't diminish his place as one of the best, and the most clutch goaltender in history...
That, and he still has his 4 rings...
So, shove them up your- you know what!
