UPDATE: I watched this video and gave me the confidence of doing it myself and not the dealership. My RAM was not reading the gas level at certain points, so I decided to change the fuel pump in full. I did break a few tabs, but after 6 hours , got it done! Wanna give a shout out to this channel because i was actually motivated to do a bunch of stuff to my 2014 Ram 1500 Sport.
Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it! Let me know what you think of the other vids on the channel when you get a chance. A lot more vids like this on here 😎👍👍👍
Great video. Couple of tips. You can reach all fittings without dropping the tank first. It's easier to pop the fuel line that connects to the fuel pump module along the frame rail and pop the line loose of the clips. Especially if you're unhooking everything before dropping. Great video!!
Thanks so much. This video armed me with the details I needed to tackle this job. I tow a lot with my 1500 crew cab, so longer fuel range is key. I scooped up a 32 gallon tank from a local salvage yard and with the help of this video I set to work. Took my time and had the job done in under 3 hours with no surprises. Thank you!!!
Thank you for the video. 4.5 hours later, all fixed, but it would have been longer making sure all the connections were undone. The inner fender was one of the hardest parts. I did undo the pump connections by reaching through the fender wall, as it did not look to have enough length to lower the tank and do it from the top. Saved hundreds and installed a Delco part. Again THANK YOU!!!
This video gave me the confidence to really believe in myself. I realized how much beer I can drink while watching this UA-cam video. Thanks much more confident with my drinking ability 😊
Just did mine, after watching someone DIY dropping the tank out the bottom, it's just as easy to loosen the bed and lift the bed, removing the pump out the top. 😁👍
Crew Cab short box the fuel pump is positioned under the rear seats. You still have to drop the tank half way to get the pump out and back in even with the bed off. (2009 and up with larger fuel tank.)
Well done, I like how you gave tips about pushing the conector together first and then hit the button and pull on it, it took me too many years to learn that
Heck yeah glad to hear! Check out the other helpful vids on this channel as well for these trucks and hit that join button to support the channel and more videos 💪
Great Video, taking off the driver side rear wheel and well cover was huge . Allows sight into otherwise compromised areas and allows perfect access to the fuel tube, vent tube and electrical connector . The use of the straps is also a great idea , we used 3 straps and a jack . Worked wonderfully. Had it out and back in 2hrs
Way cool video! You save me about $1,000! I've done several jobs on my truck, but never remove the gas tank, but the way you showed it is a piece of cake! It's a big piece of cake, but it's still just a piece of cake! Thanks again big guy!
I just did mine a 2011 dodge ram 1500 sport with crew cab 5.7 L . This video was the one to follow , I removed the box and lifted it and move it back , then lowered the gas tank enough to change the fuel pump then reversed the order, i found it eazier to unhook lines and get get at the fuel pump when i removed the box . The outdoorsmen was the first video i follwed , but the gas tank is set up diffrent u cant remove the fuel pump cause the cab is in the way. Thanks for the video it help me out so much i couldnt have done it with out this video🤘🏽
Awesome! Cool video, thanks! My fuel pump went out today on my work truck. Lucky for me it’s a company truck so the shop will be performing this project...I’ve done similar jobs in the past on my son’s Jeep Cherokee and on my 92 Accord.
TLDR: If you have a crew cab use this video. DO NOT mess with the bed. WTF Ram? Thanks for the video. I wish I had went with this instead of some of the “just pull the bed” videos. Pull the bed MIGHT work with single or quad cab but NOT crew cab. I started down that road, but much to my horror when I lifted the bed only to find the fuel pump assembly still tucked 2/3 or more under the cab with maybe 3” between it and the cab! If you have a crew cab truck with 26 gal tank just do it the way this vid shows, and skip pulling the bed. I ended up doing a hybrid method of the 2 and it was awful. I was going to elaborate a bit on what I did, but as it was a bit sketchy especially as I typed it out I’ll just leave it at if you have the crew cab don’t mess with the bed just drop the tank. Fuel pump assembly was replaced (in May 2022) as a result of P0463 code and intermittently working gas gauge on a 2017 1500 Sport 5.7L with 38000 miles and 7 months out of power train warranty. The gauge sending unit on mine had a scored line similar to the one in this video that looks even worse zoomed in on the picture I took of it. There is no doubt in my mind I changed the right part to address the issue. This issue seems so common and premature it baffles my mind why it hasn’t been addressed yet. Oh well, the pump assembly I put back in its place did look noticeably different. Maybe now in mid 2022 they’ve got it right.
I just finished replacing my pump following this pretty much exactly. The white plastic top had cracked into about a dozen little pieces (none fell in, thankfully) so without a sealed system I was getting warnings from check gas cap to big & small leaks to misfires. If I tried to fill it up at the pump, gas would come right out the cracks all over the station. Talk about embarrassing. The most difficult steps for me was trying to get the fuel and EVAP lines that had the U-shape clips off and on, especially when I couldn't always see what I was doing. but overall it went smoothly. Now on to my exhaust leak. Ugh.
So on a 15 crew cab big horn I would not recommend trying to remove the bed, as once you do you still can't access the fuel pump...I think it was easier to remove the tank than wrestling with the giant bolts that hold down the bed anyway.
Just got done changing the sending unit on my 2016 ram with 58k!, It's bull crap why Mopar does not address this issue, let me tell u i can turn a wrench, this is no easy task, specially getting some of the unreachable connectors, mine broke another headache!!, Do your self a favor trade in the FN truck again bull on dodge's part, Great video do gave me an idea on how to get started with this task, thank you very much.
Great video I’m going to do mines this weekend truck takes long to start when left overnight have to cycle the pump a couple times then it’s fine once it’s starts after that guessing pumps going bad
Great video. My 2012 3500 just started spraying fuel from the top of the tank upwards towards the left side of the truck. Appears to be coming from where the pump sits, . Before I pull the tank, I hope to actually see where the fuel is coming from. Any ideas? Which one of the fuel lines would be pressurized?
Update: about 3 hours to get the tank out. The driveline was definitely in the way and once it was dropped , I could wedge my way between the exhaust to see the top of the fuel tank. The hole is in the feed line from the pump (larger line). I'm considering just cutting out the part with the hole and using regular fuel line as a splice. I can't see why this wouldn't work. Replacing the whole line would be a pain.
Great video you should have gas tank and Evac charcoal canister removal on Ram. Took me forever just to find a video of somebody removing the gas tank and Evac charcoal canister on a Ram. For some reason after gas tank strap recall in Canada I have a big hole in the plastic on the top of my evap charcoal canister thanks to the dealer. The gas cap light then engine light came on 2 Days after getting the recall done.
@@reasonandjusticeinamerica7391 Took it back to the dealer got the run around even worse during covid-19 now. They denied using a torch or grinder doing the recall job. When I changed the charcoal canister the molding Inlet hole must have been leaking fumes and actually torched out it made a big hole where you could see the charcoal inside. Installed another charcoal canister from the Wrecker and my gas cap light went off all fixed cost me $200 I guess it's worth it considering the stress of fighting a dealer who denies any wrongdoing and corporate FCA.
I had the fuel pump on my 2010 ram replaced last year. They installed a delphi pump with a life time warranty. The pump quit on me last week. Is there a better pump option?
Do you happen to know what the inner diameter is of the rubber fuel lines? I have a 4.7L but I would think it's probably the same. I'm just wanting to install a check valve because the truck hesitates to start some mornings unless i let it prime a few seconds first. Those wheels look badass btw
Dumb question! If I have a 4-post lift, would there be enough room between the two lift's drive rails to still drop the tank? Was thinking the lift would be easier for me than jack stands and floor jack. Also, if I have the smaller tank (22 gallon I think), is it just shorter in length, or does it vary in other ways?
Just wondering are you upgrading your fuel pump because you had issues with it? Just a couple days ago I just spent 700 bucks at the dealership having my fuel pump and fuel level sensor replaced because of a faulty fuel sensor the trouble code was p0463 fuel level sensor High circuit. This is a very common problem in these trucks the Mopar fuel pump and sensor are junk and I'm hoping it becomes a recall one day and Chrysler will refund my money!🤑 One can only hope I guess lol!!
I'm having the same issue with my 2014. Last few days my check engine light comes on and shows the fuel sensor error. Seems to happen at around 1/2 to 3/4 tank full. I've read online that you can potentially just replace the level sensor portion vs the whole pump. But my local dealer says they'd charge 400 bucks just to drop the tank. Looks like i'll either deal with it myself or have the sensor be glitchy.
Where is the fuel pump driver module Did u take it off before the video ? Another video I watched had it by the ps rear tank cross member It's not in your video !
at 10:39 of video it shows the evap canister on the left. does that come out easy after removing vapor hoses and sensor? Im trying avoid dropping tank but can get the heat shield off to access canister. just wasn't sure if the canister is bolted or snapped in a way you have remove the tank its self?
Great vid! I keep having issue with the evap module(connects to evap canister) I get a code its bad and have replaced 3 times also with that the engine is bouncing a little while accelarating at certain speeds and my rpms bounce just a little (100rpms at most up-down-up down-up-down while accelating)... would this indicate a bad fuel pump or mroe likey spark plugs? i only get codes for evap module which i tested and seems fine with no leaks. I am a certified diesel mechanic and my pride wont let me bring this to a dealer . apprecate the help
Hi, I have a lift, but I'll never use it. LOL. It would drive me nuts having one and not able to use it, especially with the lowering kit and this. Haha. I'd wait till the Viper is out of the way. :p

@@ericp.1759 ya that's what I was thinking depends on this dam bolts. Thank u for the response I appreciate it I'll just do it the way I see it here. Thanks again.
@frankpetrone183 One note. If you do drop the tank. My wiring harness was still fixed snug to the frame, I had to use a mirror (highly recommend grabbing the telescopic 3"one) to get the electrical connector off and disconnect the fuel line further up the line towards the cab. I just couldn't lower it as much as this guy . Hopefully, this is not the case for you. 👍
@@BoostedMotorsports Okay thanks! Great video! My 5.7 hemi is chugging sometime on hills. I thought maybe it was a fuel filter, but I dont think has one. Think maybe there's something wrong with the pump.
This was easier in my opinion. The hoses going to the tank would have probably need to be disconnected anyways leading to the filler neck and after that its only the 2 bolts for the strap to drop it !
Hello does anyone have a wiring diagram of the fuel pump electrical plug in. Mine was broken when I changed my pump and the new pigtail is not color cordinated
try cathodic protection on your vehicles. Duct tape a cathodic rod (for hot water heaters) on your vehicle underbody. It would be sacrificial and would let the rest of the truck not rust as much...
Easier to take out bed bolts on drivers side. Loosen passenger side . Remove rear drivers side wheel and Jack bed up . 2x4 and floor Jack. Brace bed with 4x4 inbetween frame and bed . 2 he job.
Great video on the tank. I'm trying to find out why the EVAP system is not sealed and throwing a code. Hopeful I can see a bad connection or something easy. LOL. If anyone has dealt with EVAP leak and know an area to look at, then let me know! LOL
Nice work with the video! Detailed explanation and the camera work was very well done for being in a shitty position with crap lighting. Most of these videos are poorly edited (if at all) or just really hard to follow due to the lack of planning before the "shoot". Honestly didn't plan on subscribing or watching your other videos but you did a great job (and I have the same truck), so.., you got me. Peace and be safe...D
tjkacesup dude ive been researching this and have found nothing except dealer saying thats a $5000 upgrade because of tank, pump, wiring harness and ecu and labor.

Hey that box beside the fuel pump is the evap system correct?
Great stuff
I just got a check engine light giving me code.po463.Is that a faulty sensor?
So I have a question would it not b easier to just raise the box or take box off just a question as iv never done this before
Maybe. Depends how stubborn those bed bolts are. Not a possibility with the crew cab. * I just did mine. *
My 2014 the pump is under the cab . I lifted my bed and couldn't access it 😮
@@ericp.1759 oh perfect thank u I'd rather have it then not need it then need it and not have it thank u for that.
Did I miss the explanation of why did you need to change out the fuel pump? Why would you want to upgrade it from a standard one?
Truck was supercharged

Okay thanks! Great video! My 5.7 hemi is chugging sometime on hills. I thought maybe it was a fuel filter, but I dont think has one. Think maybe there's something wrong with the pump.
Where is the link to the RAM fuel pump vid?
About to do mine i have a smaller tank i believe so thats good but i do still have half a tank of gas unfortunately lol
Hey just curious why you dropped the tank vs un-bolting the box and sliding it back?
This was easier in my opinion. The hoses going to the tank would have probably need to be disconnected anyways leading to the filler neck and after that its only the 2 bolts for the strap to drop it !
@@BoostedMotorsports true enough.
How much would you charge if you had to do it for a customer.Do you think $250 is fair to charge someone for a fuel pump swap
I charged 500. Labor cost mainly
Hello does anyone have a wiring diagram of the fuel pump electrical plug in. Mine was broken when I changed my pump and the new pigtail is not color cordinated
Can you tell me whats the name of that sensor ???
Wow absolutely no rust 😂😂 if i try doing this job here in buffalo even on a 2017 right now it'd be full of rust
lol yeah its nice not having to worry about rusted bolts on this thing 😂
#dontfeedthebuffalos
try cathodic protection on your vehicles. Duct tape a cathodic rod (for hot water heaters) on your vehicle underbody. It would be sacrificial and would let the rest of the truck not rust as much...
I'm in Newfoundland canada and no vehicles look like this around here. Probably not even a 2021. Our winters are unforgiving .
Yeah good job, it’s a hard one though.
Would pulling the bed be easier or this method of actually dropping the tank ?
Easier to take out bed bolts on drivers side. Loosen passenger side . Remove rear drivers side wheel and Jack bed up . 2x4 and floor Jack. Brace bed with 4x4 inbetween frame and bed . 2 he job.
Before jacking bed . Take three bolts out of fuel line where attached to side of bed
Wondered tha too
Great video on the tank. I'm trying to find out why the EVAP system is not sealed and throwing a code. Hopeful I can see a bad connection or something easy. LOL. If anyone has dealt with EVAP leak and know an area to look at, then let me know! LOL
You did not show disconnecting the evaporative Fissions System Leak Detection Pump at the back of it gas tank 😎
Is the ecodiesel the same?
Same chassis so it should be similar
Got the tank lose, but i can't get any of the connections to come lose without breaking them...
We have come a long way since this video and have a ton of cool 4th Gen ram content here for ya 👍
More light??
Is it possible to upgrade my gas tank? I have the small one.
Did you ever get an answer?
If i put it where the locator goes. Its going to be runin from side to side instead of front to back
Do you remember the color code
Have you tried to swap from 26 gal to 32 gal tank?
I am about to do this soon. Just got the larger tank
tjkacesup dude ive been researching this and have found nothing except dealer saying thats a $5000 upgrade because of tank, pump, wiring harness and ecu and labor.
@@FC-eb6zs everything I have read said easy swap. I have alfaobd reader to change the computer from 26 to 32 which isn't needed but nice to have so the gauge will read correctly and tripometer will show correct miles left before refueling.
tjkacesup so its just tank, and pump that you need and alfaobd?
@@FC-eb6zs just the tank. The fuel pumps are supposed to be the same. The tank isn't deeper just longer. It is an option for the truck so you are not creating something new. A buddy of mine has the same year truck and his has the 32 that is why I am going to do it. Just received the tank yesterday. Waiting for a free weekend to do the swap.
Around 8 minutes and 22 seconds that Orange clamp has me backed I cannot get it loose
This one time at band clamp!
Thank cool
