+Sa Ra Thanks for checking us out! We personally have not seen much of this issue but as you stated it can and does happen, not specifically with this generation but overall there are some engines that aren't quite perfect. Unfortunately with issues like this the only thing that can be done is to be on top of your maintenance and change your fluids often to avoid any increase in the chance of issues happening.

Honestly every brand has issues, no truck is perfect. I work in concrete but I cant afford a bigger truck. I load up mine with up to 2500 lbs in the bed at times. ive pulled close to 12000lbs with a trailer. No issues with the truck so far. Running strong. Its all about maintenance and some tlc. Yeah there might be a few lemons here and there but if you take care of your truck it will last regardless of the brand.👍

If it isn't a major problem to get fixed I am thinking about selling it and looking for a Sierra. Unfortunately all manufacturers have their one major issue. Ram has been having the same transmission issues since I can remember and they don't even consider it a problem that needs to be addressed.

      Ram 150?
      that's Ford speak.
Only thing manufactures care about is if it lasts up to their warranty, after that they don't care.
Guess you can go with a V8 next time, instead of a V6.
As for the ZF8HP transmission.... they are on a lot of different makes. BMW pretty much sells the model to everyone. And they weren't used in Ram until 2013? maybe?. (...not the same trans as a 2011 v8, regardless)
Though...I guess the straight 6 twin turbo, Hurricanes will be using the trans, when the V8 goes bye, bye. idk.

I have recently began to do all my service myself (2015 Ram 1500 5.7L). This channel has been invaluable in learning about the do's and dont's with my Truck. Back in the day (30 years ago or so) I rebuilt 2 engines for my 77 Ford 1/2 Ton. But things have changed so much since then. Thank you for making these videos to help those of us trying to save a few bucks (sometimes more than a few) by doing the work ourselves. :) I usually buy my parts from the dealer (OEM), but next time I will order from 1A. On a side note, I changed my water pump yesterday and I was shocked by how small the radiator is. I mean ... it's really thin. On my old Ford the radiator was massive. Huge. Guess technology has advanced enough to make everything smaller.

I understand that eventually I’ll have to replace the lifters and probably upgrade the camshaft, I will also be upgrading my exhaust manifold to a higher quality one but other than that nothing else. Well I have a 2013 Ram with the Hemi and have had two of the problems. I had a radiator hose clamp break and also had the manifold bolts break. The truck has 110,000 miles and those are the only problems I have had. As far as oil consumption I change oil at 5000 miles and the oil level has never been down, it does not use any oil. I love this truck.

Informative video, but here is what I’ve experienced with my 2014 1500 Ram. I had the tailgate issue first off, luckily it was covered because of a recall issue. The second common thing on these Rams is the hemi tick, which stems from broken manifold bolts. That happened to my truck at 110k miles. And the most common issue, which happened to my truck at 38k (just out of warranty) was the fuel level sensor went bad. To repair that issue, the dealer wanted $900.00. Most of the cost is labor because you need to drop the gas tank. My car wouldn’t pass smog because of this issue so I had to get it fixed.

I just bought a 2014 1500 SLT with the 5.7L Hemi, 97,500 miles. I've only had it two weeks - so far, so good. It was a Canadian truck so more rust than normal underneath; that's what I'm targeting first - shocks/struts on all four wheels and the oil pan. Otherwise the engine runs and sounds good, transmission is good. I haven't noticed any coolant issues, my buddy already advised me to keep up the oil changes rigorously. Thanks for the tips, I wasn't aware of the coolant/radiator/water pump stuff. I'll keep an eye on them.

    @meadmaker4525 Рік тому +11

Surprised you didn't mention the cab water leaks that plague these trucks (I own a 2015 1500, so I know). Either the high-mounted 3rd brake light seal fails and floods the headliner, or the sliding rear window drains get clogged and leak water behind the rear seat, or the air vents behind the rear seat disintegrate allowing massive amounts of water to enter the cab under the rear seat and travel forward.
This has happened on so many Gen-4 Rams there should be a general recall, but they haven't done it. I've re-sealed my brake light, so that's one down. I can't get to the sliding window drain holes without removing the sliding mechanism, which tends to break when you remove it, so I'm screwed there. And I have to remove the entire rear seat to access and replace the cab vents.
This is my 3rd Dodge Ram (they'll always be a Dodge truck, don't care what FCA/Stellantis says) and it's been pretty good, but 3 massive water intrusion points into the cab is just beyond the scope of reason for this truck, especially at the price point they sell for. I've talked to my dealer about it multiple times and they just don't want to hear about it. Which means owners are left to try to figure it out on their own.
Every truck has its own quirks and problems that happen throughout its life, but I'm starting to see people on the forums complaining about the same water leaks on the Gen-5 Rams now. So, even though FCA/Stellantis has known about these water leak problems for years, they've failed to design a better product and now the new trucks have inherited the same problems. It's insane.

I own a 2010. I left a comment going into details about this, but it’s starting to seem like (after viewing these types of videos on our 4th gens) 90% of these problems are for the 2013 and after trucks (the ones with all the digital things like the 8 speed automatic transmission) the 2009-2012s are very mechanical trucks and very strong, those are the ones I have experience with and the only issues I’ve ever had were wheel bearings on the front and exhaust manifold bolts. That’s it.

The 2003 hemi and dodge in general had more occurring issues back then. The only thing that the new ram really struggles with is cam and lifters because they don’t get properly lubricated from the crank shaft while sitting at idle. If you don’t sit at idle too often. Then they make great trucks.

I noticed you did not mention the "Hemi tick". This has been acknowledged by even FCA engineers. The thing is, this occurs without any mechanical issues. Even the engineers and designers can find no real issue, this could very well be the ticking some people hear. I should mention that this causes no type of misfire and does not show a check engine light.

I'm not an engineer but I can tell you it's because the exhaust has too play. It bounces around a little too much and it eventually breaks the back bolts. They need to either make the rubber brackets more stiff or make em a few millimeters shorter

I guess I've been lucky. 2012 RAM 1500 2WD with the Evil 3.7 six, bare bones ST pkg. So far, so good. One time the gate fell open. I attributed that to having the bed Rhino-Lined and some goop settled in the actuiator on one side. I cleared it with my knife and I shut the gate like a 72 Ford - not a Bentley. That does it. I've owned a LOT of trucks in 45 years of driving. All of them had over 120K on them when purchased, except this one had 53K. I really haven't had many problems with any of them, but this one I've had longer than all the others. Why not?

Only issues I ever had are, Exhaust manifold bolts broke under warranty at 34k miles and a shift solonoid in the transmission, both were fixed by dealer at 34k miles, since then Zero issues, been super reliable. My truck has really high oil pressure, more than most I seen from friends etc, zero tick. I drove friends Ram with same setup and did not feel as powerful and ticked, but oil pressure was 1/2 of mine. At start my trucks oil pressure is high 60s, at fully warm parked idle sits at 43, seems like hemi tick may have something to do with oil pressure.

I have a 2017 Ram bighorn. I have noticed that they all have what sounds like a knock or a tick. That's normal. But when it starts to misfire, or stall. Then you need to look further. Also maintaining oil changes is important and using a good filter. Also through the dash menu you can check oil pressure at idle. When cold and when the engine is up to operating temperature. One more thing use a vacuum gauge on these engines. That will tell you what's going on inside the motor. The tailgate is under warranty.

I just got a 2012 ram 1500 sport 5.7L Hemi with 96k miles on it.
Within a couple weeks I started noticing the tick down low on passenger side that goes away when the engine warms up signaling it is probably time for exhaust manifold bolts to be replaced. Luckily this doesn't need done immediately so I can save up to replace the exhaust manifold with some headers.
I've also replace my entire fuse box (or as I've now learned it to be called the TIPM) Because my shut down relay was not being held in tight enough and any little bump caused my truck to shut down. Could put something under the lid to keep it pinned down but wanted a more permanent fix. A used Grade A box was $350. Brand new is around $800+ I think. And it took my shop literally 20 minutes to fix so if you have this problem just do it yourself.
My radiator is also slightly noisy so if I ever have some extra money to blow I'll get some new fans or do whatever necessary to quiet it down.
But that's all. Otherwise it runs beautifully and I love my truck.

After driving 275k miles on my beloved 1996 Mazda B3000 V6 3.0 Standard pick up, I finally had to give it up due to my left knee pain, obviously some sports trauma over the years, bad walking habits with worn-out shoes, and clutching for over a million times. The key to a success story of any truck is keen maintenance with timely scheduled fluid-flushes and replacing parts before they go into epic failure and it will last and haul stuff beyond your imagination. My 1996 Mazda B3000 did and I went all over Texas with it and helped out everyone in the family to haul their stuff here and there. Now got the 2019 RAM 1500 Classic 5.7L HEMI 4x4. TIPM as you mentioned is open at the bottom and I wonder why Dodge/Ram did not spend few bucks to seal it properly from the bottom, with some sort of heat-shrink or splash-guard? I call it being cheap to the bone. I mean their price tag is not low and they have definitely profited from their sales!!! As usual, I am going to crawl under my RAM to see any open sensitive components that can be shielded by a self-designed guard...I improvise anything I need to. I have used goat-bones that are hollow as heat-shields for various components in many of my vehicles- 1996 Mazda B3000, 1989 Volvo 240GL, 2005 Nissan Pathfinder LE (that line of Exterra/Pathfinder is bad news for so many reasons and in spite of my tenacious maintenance, I had to give up on that Pathfinder), 2005 BMW 540i---that is another poorly designed automobile by self-acclaimed "Ultimate Driving Machine". Anyways, there are videos about some of my past vehicles, if someone is interested in checking out. But it is time to go under my new RAM and figure out what can I do to prevent water/grime/mud splash from getting to sensitive components. Thanks.

The only problems I've had with my 2014 ram is exhaust manifold bolts and a water pump. Water pumps don't last forever. Always used synthetic oil and changed it regularly. At 160k miles now. I had one window regulator go bad at 25k miles replaced for free then batteries and belts over the years. It's been very good to me. Still gets up to 28 mpg at times and I average over 20 with my mostly highway commutes. I did the spark plugs once at 100k miles. Can't complain.... yet.

Replace your MDS system and delete it. It will need a non MDS lifters and new head gasket, also remove the MDS 4 solenoids on top and plug them correctly with the wires disconnected. Then get a tuner to reprogram the MDS system and have it shut off. It will remove any engine lights from appearing. That's the headache if you hear a slight ticking. Hope that your cam didn't get chewed up and have miss fires if you wait too long for replacement.

Love the 1A Auto videos. They've helped me do some basic maintenance on my vehicles (brake, strut and wheel bearing replacements). But, I have to question this one.
I own a 2009 1500 Big Horn which I bought new in July, '09. 12 years and a 126k miles later and the only problem I encountered with mine, that he mentions, was the tailgate issue. It only occurred twice and both time the air temp was below 15 degrees F. A little spray lube fixed that issue both times. I've never even heard of the other 4 issues he mentions. I was waiting for him to mention more common/known problems like 1. Exhaust manifold bolts breaking; or 2. Roof pan leaking around 3rd brake light and satellite radio antenna. But, I guess 1A Auto doesn't sell parts for that:)
Only other issues I've experienced for anyone wanting to compare notes are: 1. Rear sliding window motor failure (thanks to my daughter playing with the open/close switches); 2. Side view mirror, turn signal/puddle light lens cover falling off the mirror while driving ( either due to weak adhesive, too many trips and too much beating thru the automatic car wash...or both); 3. Severe fading of the black fiberglass covering on the Ramboxes.

Would dielectric grease work on the TIPM fuses and relays?

Yeah I own a 2017 1500 and my tip...I always spray lightly wd40....and have not had any issues , I spray it once every 3 months, its 2020 now still looks brand new

Yes, but they don't really need it. If your fuse box top is leaking, dielectical grease isn't going to protect them.

@@jaimezapien4897 , do you just remove the cover and spray everything? I really like WD40, my wife laughs at what I use if for.

Transmission blew out on my buddy’s 2011 Ram 2500 truck twice. The dealership called him and asked him to trade it in for the following year model. The transmission on that one blew out twice. They tried to get him to trade in again to keep it from being lemon lawed. He was in litigation for a year with Chrysler to get them to buy him out of the truck. Never buy a Chrysler product.

I've owned a lot of Dodge Rams before. They aren't bad trucks its just sometimes its a hit or miss when it comes to reliability just like any other vehicle. I had GM and Ford trucks and they weren't any better than Rams. The Ford had tons of electrical issues and the Chevys had transmission and engine failure, frame rust, lines rotting, fuel pumps, etc.

09 ram here, 180k miles (as of today), and I've had only the water pump leak at an incredibly low rate, but got it replaced because my warranty at the time covered it. Other than that, haven't had any of the others.
That said, definitely had the exhaust manifold bolts. So ridiculous how bad of an issue that is

I spent 20 plus year working for Chrysler Corp main issues on these trucks are manifold bolts, cam failures do to lifter needle bearings coming apart, Seat foam failures and some flash updates for drivability. Oh and third brake lights leaking into cabin. Everything else is normal failure doto mileage like water pumps and radiators and yes I’ve seen some fail early but not like your saying.

I had a used 2015 RAM. I got no help with annoying issues. Traded it back after nine months. It had the electrical issues so the TIPM was possibly the issue. The main issue was water and humidity inside the cab. During rain storms water leaked in from front grab handles and windshield. Every afternoon the inside windows were covered in condensation. Then every morning during the winter I had to scrape ice from outside and inside windows. That's when I traded back in because the dealership couldn't figure out why. Very disappointed.

If it had a sunroof, the front drain tubes were more than likely pinched or plugged.

The 2015 year was rated one of the least reliable years for Ram trucks so try a 2009-2013 and 2016-2020 model year.
