Interesting video, I have a 2011 gmc yukon with the 6l80 and it’s starting to shudder at about 45 mph but it doesn’t seem to last long.. I’m wondering if the torque converter is about to shit the bed on me as I’ve heard the torque converter’s had issues on these transmission’s.. I wonder why the fail on these

Just got my truck back from GMC where they flushed it to get it to be good enough until the warranty expires in Aug. After I got the truck back I went to a tranny shop where the quoted me $8k to do torque converter and trans internals. Does this sound accurate or is that a ripoff?
my truck just start failing while at work.. I drove it(3-400km) home and parked it.. should I expect a full rebuilt or you think only a new torque converter would do.. it was -35c and i could ear this power steering sound and as the drive progress i could feel a shutter almost felt like the engine was missing. 130 000km literally when this happened.
I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado. When it's at a complete stop I put it in gear holding the brake and I can feel a rumble like the torque converter in the brake pedal. When I let off the break and go it stops. I heard that the torque converter is what messes it up. I want to put a new torque converter what type should I get. It has 160,000 miles but it's mostly highway.
Is there anything I could do to prevent this? I just bought the same exact truck not knowing about this common issue. I plan on draining the tranny fluid and changing the filter. As well as adding a Sure Cool System by Superior to keep the fluid cooler.
In all honesty there's no prevention that I'm aware of outside of starting over. If the truck already has miles on it, then it's to late. I don't believe in mystery in a bottle. The sure cure could help prolong the inevitable failure, but it will not prevent it. My suggestion would be to plan for the failure, we bought a 2015 when it had 60k on it and started saving and had the money to repair when it failed. I hope this helps if we can do anything to help just let me know.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 thanks for the quick reply. I bought mine at 60k miles as well. You don’t think it is a maintenance issue? Shifts gears perfectly currently and hoping to hit 150k miles before she blows. How many miles was on this one in the video?
I'd have to check my records on that. On my personal one it had 158k when it went down. I think that the bearing failure and valve train wear areas cannot be prevented once they start wearing. Service is definitely a great thing for it and if caught early could be easier for repairs.
I just bought a 2018 Silverado and it drives fine, still under warranty for a little under 2 years i would say, just curious about whether I should do a trans change or flush when it comes time for scheduled maintenance? I heard in these trannys they only need a change, but would like your input.
Definitely look into it if you think you need especially if the transmission feels weird to ya, i just dropped mine off at a shop earlier today for this reason in the video
I'm having an issue with air checking the 1-2-3-4 and reverse clutch. With it out of the case and mounted onto the pump, it air checks good. When in the case and pump installed, it does not air check. Is this right? Normally I only check it outside the case.
So If there’s a vibration it’s already too late I assume? Must rebuild the transmission at that point, or can you get away with just a converter and a transmission flush?
I just picked-up a '18 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3 with the 6L80 in it, with 36K miles. Had shudder, and dealer found converter coming apart. Replaced converter, seal, flushed unit & cooler. Seems fine now. As asked below, any preventative measures that can be taken now to prolong it's life?

There's a few different ways to approach this. I personally would start with the service advisor and try to be as clear about the problem as possible. For example mph rpm temp gear range load time of driving type of driving as well. The reason for so much information is to help the technician narrow down to a specific complaint. The 2-3 flair has been a known issue with the 6 spd for some time. If the dealer you are working with is not being as cordial as you'd like. The second option would be speak with a different dealer or a local trans specialist try to get hard proof of your concern to take back to the dealer. You will probably be out some diag fee no matter what, but the end result may be a lot better. If you do take it to a local shop explain to them the situation and make sure they understand your intentions of the diagnosis. I hope this helps you get this taken care of. Thanks for the support we appreciate it.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 That definitely helps! I have tried to be as specific as I can but they drive the truck on the highway on 5th and 6th gear when I tell them highway driving is fine. That is my next step a different chevy dealership. On a diferent note the first thing the transmission technician stated was that I was only bringing it in because it had 90k miles and warranty on the allison is 100k. Additionally he said this is my first allison transmission repair! So he attempted but since the trans had no codes allison approved for valve body only. Which took care of 80% of the problem but I still feel the trans slip. Now I noticed the mileage meter does not measure correctly: ie. Drove 28 miles to chevy dealership my truck said it drove 37 miles. I measured it again and it did the same thing. I compared it with mapquest and on a stock toyota suv. The toyota was accurate my truck was off by 5 miles on the way back home. Thanks for the quick response. You have a subscriber for sure. Have a great week budy.

2016 silverado 1500 5.3 4x4 High Country and the trans. Is already slipping at 87k miles. Its time for a lawsuit this is just stupid AF. A $40k-$50k truck with a glass transmission is unacceptable. GM can make a solid trans. The problem is they gave up and decided mass production is better than reliability.

Cool just making sure. So early on when the 15-16 just came out they had issues with converter lining. It's possible you have an internal issue. The best thing to do would be to get it diagnosed by a very qualified shop. Looking at slip speed vs dod is a great place to start. If crusing it doesn't show enough slip to activate the code then I would clean mass air and verify everything in order of air flow to make sure it's actually having a lock up concern. If you have a scanner I would be more than happy to help with walk through of code chart and theory of operation.

That definitely helps!
That's definitely a weird scenario on the odometer. Absolutely glad to respond. Have a great week too.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 yes am surprised as well why does the odometer add so many miles on a less than 30 mile trip? I am not a mathematician but seems like almost 33% I recorded this with photos and bouble checked on the way back home. Difference was 37 miles on the trans with issues and the Toyota got the 29 mile trip just about right! I don't know what's wrong with the trans thanks so much agian!
That one I'd have to see I've never seen that before.
Looks like good stuff
2016 silverado 1500 5.3 4x4 High Country and the trans. Is already slipping at 87k miles. Its time for a lawsuit this is just stupid AF. A $40k-$50k truck with a glass transmission is unacceptable. My 07 ram 1500 had 210k miles stock trans and still ran smoother than this garbage. Shit my 2001 corvette 6-speed has 80k miles and still doesnt surge or slip one bit and i drive that MF HARD. GM can make a solid trans. The problem is they gave up and decided mass production is better than reliability.
Mine just acting up at 156k (loosing 1st) everybody telling me it’s past due… my sierra looks good nobody believes it’s 14’ worse case Trans rebuild and engine rebuild when the day comes is still nothing close to a new 65k thousand dollar truck. I got mine for 32k when I drove it off the lot 😅.
My 2014 silverado has a jerk to it when I drive but when I switch it to manual shift it drives fine. Can't figure out what it is.
I would get it on a scanner before any thing else
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 It started before I changed the throttle body sensor. Had the front and rear differential served, plus the transmission fluid, filter and rings replaced. Hooked up to a computer and no codes are showing.
Can you describe the jerk
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 seems to hesitate like a light jerk but sometimes feels a little hard especially going up hill in drive. Shifts good though.
Ok when it happens does it jerk multiple time also can you describe where you feel the jerk
What a shame they should have just kept making and putting the enternal 400 turbo tranny in them.
Just t
Had a P0741 code on my 16 2500HD only 32k. Any thoughts on that code?
Just to be sure which unit do you have
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 it’s the 6.0 gasser with the 6L90
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 MYD part code should be 6L90
Cool just making sure. So early on when the 15-16 just came out they had issues with converter lining. It's possible you have an internal issue. The best thing to do would be to get it diagnosed by a very qualified shop. Looking at slip speed vs dod is a great place to start. If crusing it doesn't show enough slip to activate the code then I would clean mass air and verify everything in order of air flow to make sure it's actually having a lock up concern. If you have a scanner I would be more than happy to help with walk through of code chart and theory of operation.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 I have just a code reader. I’m on the road with my family towing our RV. It happened today and I really don’t see any drivability issues. I cleared the P0741 once and we ran with no issue. Stopped for fuel and while on surface streets it popped up again. This time it won’t clear and is accompanied by P0700. I spoke to a local shop and have appointment in the morning. I’m not sure if I should drive in manual mode without tow/haul engaged. Is that a bad idea?
Once they build a reliable transmission, why don't they just leave it at that and not change it.
Why do this torque converter go out so easily an did thy update the 6 speed an 8 speed transmissions
There's a multitude of different reasons for converter failure but the biggest fault is in the regulator system. There have been many updates and upgrades to both the 6 and 8 spds however failure is still imminent.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 is it because of the exhaust pipe that runs under the transmission pane that it fails because of heat ?
No while the heat may not be good for it I don't believe it has any true effect on the life expectancy.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 so it’s the torque converter in the front that fails and ruins the transmission right? Otherwise the transmission will last
How much does 6l80 transmission rebuild usually cost in the real world?
Our start at 2700 on the bench and go up from there.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 thank you, I have a slight 45mph shutter in my 2018 with 83,508. Would putting lubeguard shutter fix be okay in these new transmissions or would that hurt more then help?
The mentality behind the shudder fix is based on fluid only the shutter your experiencing is a mechanical issue. Personally I don't the it's would be worth the cost of the bottle to use it in this situation.
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 okay thank you sir, have a great day.
You too.
Damn 2013 6l80e 106k slipping on takeoff probably already too late I suppose
More than likely yes it is sorry to hear it's slipping
@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 thanks wish I saw this before I bought it my 6l60e in my 05 made it to 269k which by then was expected
Unfortunately I hear that all to often
My 2015 chevy was running fine. Stopped at stop sign then all of sudden nothing high Rev no response from transmission no load clanking or noise just won't move at all
Check pan for debris I've seen them do that when the converter comes apart and plugs filter otherwise drum or piston issue in 1-2-3-4 drum
Would it show any type of code or anything? It isn't throwing codes or making any crazy noises. And what would a rebuild roughly cost? For the things you mentioned
It won't always show a code or make noise. My rebuilds start at 3500 for the 6l80 family
Thank you for info and help!
Anytime
Nowhere in this video was the torque converter.
My name is Joseph I would love to let rebuilt my transmission I have a 2016 Chevy high country 4x4 the same thing
Since I’m doing my research for my truck. I’m not sure if it’s the transfer case or transmission. Could you check out the video on my channel and give some advice? I’m honestly torn what to do. Thanks for the video guys.
I'll see what I can do

@@expressautotransmissiondav4207 After changing the fluid in the transfer case I took it for a quick drive. Truck threw P0700 and P0741 codes. I’m looking at a new torque converter huh?
Thats where I would be going
my 2016 sierra did this at 120 000 easy km. cost 8 grand for a new one from gm. Won't buy a gm again.
Make more videos please
meanwhile my 4L60E has a clean pan with no metal every time i drop the pan.
Very nice
Use sonnex parts
Toyota is built a lot stronger
As long as you install an after market cooler if it’s a V8 truck !
Thank you! I hope you’ll recieve Christ as your Lord and Savior.
