I learned so much about transmissions just from watching your videos. I'm an Industrial Mechanic, and although I've worked on rather complex hydraulic equipment, they don't really compare to a compact transmission.

It’s better to just replace the 6L80 converter with a 6L90 converter as it’s a much stronger converter than the weak 6L80 converter. I upgraded from the 6L80 converter in my suburban to a 6L90 converter and my transmission shifts as smooth as ice. I also upgraded to a larger trans cooler. I also deleted the AFM system completely.

Good to see new videos again! I rebuilt one of these 2 years ago on my own 2500 Suburban and spared no expense... it only lasted 36k miles before the convertor took the trans out again. I didnt have HP tuners and wish this video was around back then. But now I swapped a 4L80E and not going to have to deal with this fragile trans anymore.

I'm liking the fact I get to see some of the features and functions here. Generally not a fan at all when ppl tune, but it's understandable when a technician does it when they know what they're doing.

Thanks Cuba, It's a very powerful tool. Specially when you're trying to figure out air fuel ratio discrepancy. Paired with a wide band sensor and your scope of choice, you can quickly pinpoint issues with the issue you're trying to diagnose, fuel trims can be difficult to diagnose if you cant really see what you're looking at. It's an awesome tool, a good investment too.
In my case, instead of engineers trying to solve our industry transmission issues which are very obvious that never take care of, it's safe to say we can address the issues through this method.
Thank you for your comment, it's very valuable.

My stock 2015 Yukon (5.3) has 135k miles on the original TC and trans. I just bought a GM Tow Package Torque converter (dual clutch like the ZL1/CTSV TC, just with 3 bolt holes instead of 6), to replace my stock single clutch TC as preventative maintenance. My trans still shifts like butter and has zero issues. I also bought a Sonnax Zip Kit, the trans go clutch select valves and a TECHM rebuild kit to put in as well. I have HP tuners and will stop the TCC slip 1-4, should get at least another 135k miles out of the TC doing this, we will see how the rest of the trans holds up. This was all about $900 all said and done with OEM trans fluid.

Then I disassembled the slip between 1-4 and increased pressure. Truck runs amazing and the power is fantastic and always ready. I didn’t buy the tuner for extra Hp, I just wanted to eliminate the BS systems.

i really hope you see this comment. i have a 2011 avalanche 5.3 6 speed so 6l80 trans. my issue is under quick acceleration (needing to get on freeway, or pass a car) i notice trans will "stutter, grind, and RPM will red line without shifting to next gear, unless i let off accelerator and then ease back into pedal, i also have 205k miles on the truck. im really hoping that a new TCM (trans valve body) will fix the issue. after watching this vid now has me concerned that i may need to take to trans shop for 1-3 clutch plates bad... idk yet havent dropped pan yet to look for metal. im just doing the research to fix this in a one and done.. i have heard these are known as GM throw aways. i fell i can rebuild the tcm valve body but if it exceeds that and is more internal trans issue then ill be forced to take to shop. 1 shop told me that it would be 4k minimum for new that i cant rebuild, mind you this was just over the phone he never drove it, looked at it, or put a computer to it.. please help point me in the right direction or message me and we can talk 1 on 1.. please i need help

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  3 роки тому +1

Sounds logical. But what I've seen a lot is the other way around. The converters failing prematurely and debris sticking the valves, usually the compensator feed valve which it sticks very easily. I've had converters shuddering right off the bat before even delivering the vehicle to the customer, Sometimes after a week or 2. Some on the 10 day 300 mile check we ask our customers to bring back to recheck that everything is going smooth.
I do agree that Transgo probably need to update that and other valves adding lube grooves to make them a little more stable, specially where they added the extra material.

Engines are different. LS to an LT. The torque is different from one to the other. They're programmed different on Gen5 the torque converter comes on in first right before second gear and up while on the Gen4 is at 4th gear and up. Solenoids, pressure regulator, actuator feed limit and compensator feed valves become very busy because of the change in programming causing quicker wear than Gen4. And the added cooler bypass makes it worse.

His response makes sense. My dad has a 2012 silverado and had his 6L80 go out at 187k and I have a 2018 making a rattling noise at very low RPM now at 68k. These transmissions are junk.

I know this is an older video, but I am just now seeing it. I have a question I have a 2020 Yukon. I am having NO problems with the transmission. I just installed a Sure Cool STL010 bypass valve to prevent any future issues. I noticed the tranny fluid is pretty dark. Vehicle has 45k miles. What do you recommend I do to ensure this transmission stays healthy? I appreciate your time

Hiram, great video. Especially the computer corrections. Which PTC converter do you recommend? 6L90 version? Do you update to the latest GM cal before making TCM adjustments? Thank you for sharing.
Just did a service on a 2017 5.3 6L90 with 100K miles. Never been serviced. Filter restricted. Small metal debris field in rear of lower section of pan (1/2 by 2") Trans still a little herky jerky so deleting the DOD and adjusting TC parameters is definitely needed.

Can you make the changes using HP Tuners without doing anything physical to the transmission?

If there's no issues with it yes you can. It will improve and make it last longer.

Very informative video. You seem like a very intelligent transmission mechanic. My question to you is this. My transmission is doing fine so far at 45,000 miles. What can i do to my 2017 silverado 1500 6 speed tranny to prevent a future failure without taking it out of the truck or removing the DOD ?

    Hello.
so wanted to see what you think.
    2017 Chevrolet Express van extended.
    6.0 I believe with 6l90e
When cold slowish goes in gear or moves forward. With a sudden moderate slam into what I believe is second gear ⚙️.
Then drives like normal if still driving like say from parked to a main road where there are no stops.
After stopping at stop. No forward movement. Unless light throttle is given ever quick but slow tapping of acceleration pedal will slowing moved forward.
Engine light on but says fuel system code. Related to someone trying to steal gas. Damaged something.
Not sure if it's related to drivability issue.
    Currently waiting for warranty process.
The drivability issue came on suddenly. One week ago.
    Has 87000miles.
Let me know what you think..

I know it makes since to apply pressure to the apply ramp but it actually does nothing . You want to make those changes to regulator gain moving gain up or down adds and subtracts pressure but very small increments. And regulator offset Is lock up pressure the more you add to to offset the harder it will lock up or engage. Helps with dragging converter . If if you want to check my advice creat a table in your scanner mirror you apply ramp table . Making changes to ramp table will show no change but when you make changes to your regulator gain again small changes you will see pressure changes positive or negative. Moving the regulator gain up actually removes pressure and that helps with shutter. Always again thanks for all the videos .

      Awesome,
When you say regulator, what table should I look that under?
As you know these things are known for shudder issues. What I've been doing has worked great so far but the more information to add would be great.
This video only shows what I do to TCC issues. I actually do a full tune on some with some manuals I have.
It seems you're more experienced with tuning than I am. I do it as a hobby on my own vehicles, cams and stuff. And what I've learned so far to improve my transmissions at shop has really helped me a lot.
Any input you would like to share would be appreciated, not just for me but for others that have the capability of doing it as well.
      Thanks bro.

@@AutomaticTransmission look under the apply ramp table it will have a regulator gain table normally set to 1.5 and a regulator offset table that’s under that one in PSI. So try one day after your done building make your changed then add a little to the regulator offset table you will se it make the converter apply harder and faster with out dragging. And regulator gain the more you add it actually goes backwards so it takes pressure away and actually helps the converter stay locked with out shuttering and great for higher stall converters .

Awesome, I'll try that on the next rebuild.
      Thanks, I really appreciate that.
I'll try and post a video of it and give you credit for it.

Hello sir … before reaching operating temp my 6l80 doesn’t engage after a complete stop just revs up, after a delay it engages.
And after I come to complete stop I hear a delay shit.
Does this sound like a valve body?
    Thanks.
