- If you're interested in upgrading the torque converter in a GM 6L80 or 6L90 transmission, watch this video. You'll learn about the critical weak points of the stock-size, 300mm units and the difference between performance and heavy-duty converter upgrades. To understand options for good/better/best builds, you'll get a closeup look at key components like the front cover, piston and clutch plates, plus unique features of Sonnax multi-plate performance converter kits - the ultimate way to maximize reliability in JMBX, JMBV, JMDZ and JMDY coded units.

I like the fact sonnax is answering everyone’s questions they do make good products, second to none.
Thank you, we really appreciate your support!
Really enjoyed the videos. Learned a lot of information. Thanks a lot.
So glad to hear that, thanks so much for the wonderful feedback!
There is a ton of information on your channel too.
I lost track of how many I saw doing warranty inspections. The customer would describe an intermittent condition many know as shudder. But only in certain conditions. And they just keep driving not knowing, and fill up the trans with metal.
I can’t wait to build a 1000hp 6l80e I’ve already found all of the sonnax part numbers that I will need. ❤❤#lovesonnax
Glad to hear it! Thanks so much for your support, and let us know how everything goes.
@@sonnax will do!! I also pre ordered my 4L60e gm054-HD valve body 6months ago through summit and it’s expected to ship 1-7-24. I’ve been anticipating it’s delivery
Great job and much needed support and information
nice upgrades for the 6l units god knows they need it, hello from the great northwest
Thank you for your comment, and hello to you, too!
Thanks for the advice and information
Well done. Concise and one of the best, if not the best informative, instructional videos I've seen. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the great feedback, we greatly appreciate it!
Why are the owners fixing gm's problems, it should be up to gm gmc to fix the junk .
Especially across the big 3 domestics, the overcharged customer is the new R&D testbed.
Always has been @@Resistculturaldecline
Been an Asian import technician for 30 years and unfortunately it’s not just the “Domestic” manufacturers building garbage these days. Gone are the days when you could purchase a Honda or Toyota and expect 200K miles of relatively trouble free service. I have customers that ask me what new vehicle they should buy and I don’t have an answer for them anymore. They all are building garbage that is designed to fail.
Look at the cp4 pumps in both gm and Ford we are getting screwed
Because they're never gonna fix it, their job is to sell you a new product so they don't engineer anything to last
I'm looking at having to rebuild my 6l80. Pretty sure the converter is failed/failing. I'm hoping it's not to the point of catastrophic. The guy doing the rebuild is a well known local mechanic and racer. So I'm hoping that he upgrades mine. Cuz I don't want to have to pull it out again.
Sonnax should make the torque converters for GM
No, that'll cost GM an extra $3.24 per vehicle! Nevermind that the cost of vehicles keeps rising thousands of dollars year over year.
@sonnex I put a 6l in my 2011 silverado 1500. I have 250000 miles on the truck. The transmission shifts good. I wanted to upgrade my torque converter. What do you suggest?

Hey do you guys work on lexus transmission? For example like from 2006 to 2012 like the a960e n the aa80e?
No, as we are not transmission rebuilders. We design and manufacture top-of-the-line parts for transmissions, torque converters, and drivelines. Feel free to visit our website to learn more: www.sonnax.com. You can see what's available for the A960E here: www.sonnax.com/units/25-a960e. Hope that helps. Thanks for reaching out, and have a great day!
OK, I get it that Sonnex does not assemle these parts, but who does Sonnex use, meaning what shop does Sonnex have re-assemble, weld, and most importantly balance the converters Sonnex uses for in-house R&D? And if you won't tell me, what town and state is your business located in meaning where this video was filmed? Thanks!
Go on their website, and you will see their authorized dealers.
My mechanic after torque converter changed to billet one said no programming needed. Is he right or should I deal with other shop. 2017 sierra with 6l80

NO! I don't care what they believe. Keeping the stock allowed slip BS is just making life harder on the Sonnax upgraded converter.
EVERY good builder will block the appropriate ports to force TCC to not unlock or slip.
Its better if it goes in walks up unlocks locks up unlocks. And also a good practice on these transmissions is we go in and program out the lock up on first through fourth and only lock up in 5th and 6th on daily driver trucks and fourth fifth and sixth on towing vehicles. Because this slippage that GM put in there is to make sure you don't feel that torque converter lock up but that's also what makes that front cover grind down to metal and overheat and warp that front sheet metal cover and if they had built a billet style front cover for the converters they can get away with it maybe but in all actuality you're going to be much happier if you find a good person who knows how to tune a 6L 80 or a 6l90 and eliminate that slippage apply pressure just a little bit to make sure it's a good solid hold without overloading anything.
And if they're really good they'll go in and tune your shift points so that your transmission gives you a nice firm but not radical shift where you feel one two three four five six and it holds better and doesn't burn itself up.
Only if you plan on swapping it again. The slip is what gets them
@@MonzaRacer Unfortunately, no matter how much you tune to lock up solid, no slip, if you turn the AC on it has a default slip of 4.5 rpms that can't be tuned out no matter what you tune to "0"!!! GM engineers have f*cked us one way or another!!!! How many people in the south want to drive their trucks down the road in the hot ass summer without AC??? Sincerely Hptuner extroadinare!!! Only solution that I have found that has worked on my 2017 Silverado test mule through our trans shop is a circle D twin disk converter, put in 20 rpm slip in place of their "0" slip at max torque, put 20 in all the tables. The carbon fiber material is designed to slip, it has ridges to hold fluid for lubrication while slipping. The "0" slip at max torque is what causes the material to disintegrate because this material is designed with ridges to hold fluid to lubricate the clutch material while slipping. If you leave the "0" slip in that max torque table it causes the fluid in the material ridges to be push out, more heat generated and a fish bite sensation while cruising and eventually starts to tear away the clutch material. I work with a transmission shop and we now have 100k miles on my test truck with proper 20 rpm slip in the tune. We have changed the fluid every 30k miles and no clutch material fragments in the fluid. Also the high temp thermostats in these eariler 2014-2018 gm trucks compounded the issue even more causing the fluid to be alomst 200F all the time and even more if towing. We either flip the pill and spring to let fluid flow all the time or we install the super cool thermostat. Also the constant pressure it takes to keep these TCC locked up puts a lot of pressure on your crankshaft and eventually wears out the crank thrust bearings!
@@MonzaRacera builder told me that if u do the sonnax valve body and front pump kits u don’t need to do the programming. He said u would be doubling up and those kit will take care of the slip problem.
where can one get, as mentioned, one assembly and ready to go ? live in California- help ?

How much does a performance converter for 6l90e 3,000 to 3200 cost

Getting a new transmission with the upgraded billet torque converter. GM dropped the ball on these cars/trucks
DOD , VVT , and the transmission slip ? All because they want to make an 8 run like a 4. With one MPG GAIN. ludicrous . Delete everything build it right.
