What do BRU-1 Hops Taste Like? SMASH Beer Experiment

  • BRU-1 hops almost seem especially made just for us. It's another SMASH Beer Experiment.
    We picked these special hops up at Homebrew Con 2019 as a free sample pack.
    These hops seemed to Mike to have a mild berry and grape like flavor/aroma. Maybe a little bit of green grape. John was focused on a bit of pineapple and an interesting Nobel hop character like spicy finish.
    These were pretty interesting and had a very intense aroma coming right out of the package.
    Tell us about your experience with Bru-1 Hops!
    CHEERS!

    Love your honest reviews on these smash beers, I check your videos before I brew with new hops to try to get an idea for what I’m dealing with, thanks for being a great resource for a novice brewer!

    I just tried "Exponent: BRU-1" from Bissell Brothers Brewing in Portland, ME, and was seriously surprised how delicious BRU-1 hops can taste. Entertaining analysis from you guys! Thanks.

    Have you ever tried an extract smash for these 1-gallon batches? I've never used an extract before, but the idea of that vs managing a stovetop biab for 3-4 hours seems like the ticket if the end goal is to taste test a hop.

      I haven't used extract but have thought about 15 minute boils. With some of these hops that are only getting added to the end of the boil, I think that's a good alternative.

    Dudes! What are y'all brewing for winter? Any high gravity stuff like dubbels or tripples?

    The killer combo? Bru-1, Citra, El Dorado and Sabro with Lupulin powder.

    I bought some of the BRU-1 hops and have done no boil NEIPAs before and they came out great, do you think this would be good for a no boil, completely dry hopped NEIPA?

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  3 роки тому

      Most definitely. Cheers! -Mike

    I'm thinking about using these with loral and maybe Amarillo and/or saphir in a first red ipa attempt. Thoughts?

    • @BestBackingTracks
      @BestBackingTracks 4 роки тому

      I think Amarillo would do well. Considering this has tropical *and* berry notes I would love to try it paired with galaxy though. With the spicy aftertaste and berry notes I think it'd be great as an IPA.

      @@BestBackingTracks I'm thinking that the Amarillo could hit the citrus notes and loral could add some depth with the floral element as well as citrus. I have these on hand, I am also thinking bru-1 with maybe Columbus would be good, but also factoring in the malt flavor of a red ipa I'm trying to keep it complementary

    I did a smash of this and sampling it now while watching. I am not sure what I think. Sweet fruit? Sure. Little green fruit too. Spice, yes. I feel like this hop would be good with something else vs solo. Sounds like also pops a lot of haze based on the bio. There just isnt enough punch in it to be a solo hop, almost too soft and unremarkable in any certain flavor.

    Maybe it's just me, but I love that old foot smell, haha! Give me the stinky foot smell of Taleggio cheese and the cat piss smell of a good Simcoe crop over cheddar and EKG any day - not saying those are bad, but hey, I'm a bit weird.
