What do Nectaron Hops taste like? - SMASH Beer Experiment

  • We add Nectaron hops to the SMASH beer files this week.
    Nectaron is a New Zealand variety being offered by Yakima Valley Hops. It has a very strong fruit and herbal note to us. Mike described it as being green melon while John picked up some stone fruit character.
    We wax on a little bit about the interplay between perceived sweetness and fruit flavors in hops as well.
    This is a cool hop that could stand on its own as a SMASH beer and it would be an enjoyable beer.
    Let us know if you've brewed with Nectaron and what you'd pair it with.
    CHEERS!

    I wasn't able to get any Nectaron last year but I picked up 2 pounds the year before and brewed with them several times and loved them. This year at $40/pound it's a hard pass for me.

    I brewed a hazy APA using maris otter and oats. Centennial for bittering. Citra, mosaic and galaxy in whirlpool. Nectaron as dry hop. US05 yeast. It really adds a peachy, ginger ale element that makes for a nice summertime smasher. Less sweet fruit flavour. Good lawn mower combination. You dudes are onto it.

      Thanks for the comment. And those combos with nectaron sound great. Cheers! -Mike

    Omg I just posted my Nectaron hazy IPA vid today! 5 days late to the party! But it's all good, people actually watch your channel 😂
    Guys, I got the same stonefruit and green cantaloupe and initially thought that the cantaloupe was coming from a little bit of Citra in whirlpool, but your notes assured me otherwise. Cheers!

    Thanks for doing these. The Citra/Mosaic/Galaxy needs another competitor and I feel like that's what everyone is hunting for. Sucks it takes forever for hop growers to get somethings comparable and that's prolly why stuff like incognito exist. Anyways keep hunting, can't be far away.

    As he was mulling over the descriptors, I was willing Mike to say the word “fleshy”... and then “lychee” became the obvious yet unexpected plot twist. 😅😅😅. Well done again guys!

    Cool video and thanks for showcasing a hop from down under given that I am from NZ 😊. I have used Nectaron several times and recommend pairing with a few other NZ hops - Nelson Sauvin, Riwaka and Motueka blend nicely.

    I really appreciate you guys, but me wearing headphones and Mike swallowing is not a great combination for my ears. 🤣

    Dude's. It would be cool if you made a small batch with the yeast and hops that you think may pair well with these SMASH beers that you make. Fun experiment. Lol and would test your ideas. Would be cool.🍻🍻

      Would be cool but it's cost prohibitive. Also, breaks the format of the other SMaSHs I have done. - John

    I am not sure why it wasn't coming through strong with you guys. Every beer I have made with Nectaron paired with any other hop, Nectaron dominates. It is a very strong flavoured hop. It is not my favourite. I think Nelson Sauvin has a nicer flavour but most people love it. Very good in a NEIPA with Verdant IPA yeast.

    I had a beer by Firestone walker that had nectaron. I thought it was incredibly underwhelming. Hard to say if that was just the typical oxidized quality from packaging/distribution or just a mediocre hop?

    • @JohnL9013
      @JohnL9013 Рік тому

      Firestone walker is pretty anal and their processes are usually pretty dialed, I doubt it was oxidation unless they had a bad batch for some reason.

    • @Jonobos
      @Jonobos Рік тому

      @@JohnL9013 Hops don't survive that process for long. It is difficult to transfer to kegs without oxygen and probably impossible to can or bottle without oxidation. The overwhelming majority of hazy IPAs are pretty bad by the time we drink them.

      Similarly, I had an Other Half single hop Nectaron beer and did not like it at all. It tasted like old apricots and feet.

    Just made a NEIPA. Will be around 6.5%. 68% Pilsner, 18% malted oats, 10% white wheat malt, 4% wheat flakes. 950 litres. We're repitching Verdant yeast with no kettle hops for ibus. Pulled the wort down to 160F and poured in 11 lbs of Cascade at 8.4% Alpha for 30 minutes for around 8-9 ibus. The plan is to dryhop with 11 lbs of Nectaron and something else. Or 22 lbs of Nectaron alone. I've never tried this hop. Citra would be an easy compliment and maybe Simcoe. Final gravity will be 1.017 and fermented at 70F. Any hop pairing suggestions? Cheers.

    "John picked up some stone fruit character" What does this mean? There is no such thing as a stone fruit, stone fruit is not a flavour. Which stone fruit? Peach, cherry, Olive? Yes, Olives are stone fruits! Lots of beers list Stone fruit as a flavour. What do they mean?? Can anyone answer that?

      I dare say in this case the fruit they were trying to describe was nectarine, but I definitely agree that the generic “stone fruit” descriptor needs to change to something more accurate
