What Do Idaho 7 Hops Taste Like - SMASH Beer Experiment

- Finally the long awaited Idaho 7 hop in a SMASH beer experiment.
This week we get around to tasting the Idaho 7 hops. This hop has gotten a lot of attention as having great oils for biotransformation as well as wonderful notes of tropical fruits and citrus on its own.
The aroma stood out on this one as quite unique. Its certainly citrusy and maybe a little guava like. However there was also something herbal perhaps ginger like in the aroma that was hard to put a direct descriptor on. Regardless we liked it. The flavor carried through with the same orange and pinapple citrus flavors.
This was a great go around for applying this unique hop to our normal SMASH process. Next time around we may have to do some side by sides with an appropriate yeast strain to drive some biotransformation.
CHEERS!

Yes! I also love this hop. Been a couple years since I’ve brewed with it. Probably should put it back on my hop shopping list.
Absolutely - cheers!
Careful. US Smarties = Canadian Rockets. Canadian Smarties = Kinda like Nestle's version of M&M's.
Interesting. I had no idea. Learn something new everyday. Cheers! -Mike
Better call Saul!
Another great video.......wish you Merry Christmas and happy holidays John & Mike........cheers.....tk care
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I did a 007 SMASH a few years back. Found it was a one note wonder and needs a helper hop to really shine. Now, brewers at Sapwood and Establishment use ID7 in many of their hazies with a mix of other hops. Does very well with El Dorado. From what I've read ID7 does very well in a whirlpool addition, as Mike said to promote some thiol unlocking / bio-transformation magic.
Thanks for the comment! CHEERS! -Mike
Another great video! You brew dudes are rad. We gotta get you on our show sometime! Cheers and happy holidays!!
Nice - looks like you guys are in Somerville. Let's see what we can make happen. - John
One of my favorite hops up there with azacca.
Excellent!
Merry Christmas Brew Dudes! Sounds like a fun hop to play with.
It was! Merry Christmas! - John
Dudes, have you ever made hop tea to evaluate hop character? I have been making an italian soda-esque syrup with hops, and it makes for a fantastic non alcoholic beverage. It takes 15 minutes to make...
My recipe: heat 200ml water to ~160F (so there is no isomerization) in a coffee mug in the microwave. Add 4g hop pellets. Steep for 5-10 minutes. Put through an aeropress to filter. (French press works well for whole leaf) Add 60g sugar and stir to dissolve Mix 1-2 oz of the result to taste with soda water. I am making 750 ml at a time in Torani bottles. Currently have a Willamette and a Wai-iti made up, going to make Citra next.
Hi Tim - I have not made a hop tea in the past, but it sounds quick and easy. - John
I am stealing your recipe here.
@@BrewDudes Do it! I'm pretty hooked on these, and the result is alcohol free and ~1/3 the sugar of a typical soda, so it's hard to feel guilty about. Wifey made me agree to keep a dedicated tap of soda water on my kegerator as a ground rule.
Snorting Smarties... I died.... Happy Holidays and Christmas guys!
Gotta love it.
Love to see blind of smash of Idaho 7 with U.S.05 and Verdant
Interesting idea!
Great video. I was excited to see this hop profiled. When you mentioned Scott Janish, I was hoping you'd also highlight what he [and YCH] say about the survivability of this hop. That is - its ability to survive the boil [hot-side] and give beers saturated hop presence. They [Sapwood] discovered the greatness of this hop by accident, during routine samplings of beers "pre-dry hop." I believe last year Centennial had the most "survivability" and I-7 was like 3rd. I've had too many homebrews to go verify, as you can tell by the length of this comment. Would love to see you do a survivable / hot-side hop experiment some day. Cheers, Brew On & Merry Christmas!
Very cool - let me add that to the list.
Idaho 7 is a unique hop, I get a strong floral scent and taste mostly Sweet Rose petals from this hop, not much fruit. I do get the smarties, fake sugary sweetness you describe but I think it is the very strong floral vibe that could be confused as sweetness that is the overwhelming flavor. I substituted it for Centennial in my house ipa, which also has Cascade and Citra hops, and didn't really love it. Now I have almost a pound of it in my freezer that I'm hesitant to brew with again lol.
Liking the floral vibe! - John
aah! - sherbert?
I guess the word would be sorbet in other parts of the world. Non-dairy frozen fruit flavored dessert that is churned like ice cream. Cheers! -Mike
I love your smash Series, keep it up. You’ve inspired me to brew four1 gallon batches using different hops and yeasts to create a tasting flight. Brew on!
That is awesome! Brew on, indeed!
I recently brewed a brut pale ale using idaho 7 and el dorado. They play so nicely together. The beer itself did not last long. Super smashable
Excellent!
Merry Christmas guys!
Merry Christmas!
I just got some in. I’m not a huge bitter hoppy fan. Definitely working this into a hopped mead, maybe adding some extra citrus zest with lemongrass and green tea. I’m thinking a super summer sipper that’ll be super smash able
Big Ditch! 👏
Yep, Mike was in Buffalo and went there. - John
Sounds like a keeper there. Merry Christmas Dudes. Cheers from Uxbridge.
Smarties is a chocolate treat here in the Netherlands, I was quite confused...🙃
M&Ms are chocolate treats. Smarties are sour sugery chewy bits
@@danielkremer6494 in the USA it is. But in the rest of the world the product name belongs to Nestlé. They make chocolate candy under this name.
Good to know. I didn't think Pixie sticks or Smarties would translate everywhere. We were picking up a powdery sugar sour candy note on this hop if it's helps. - John
Yes, that's my take too. - John
Thanks for insight - brew on! - John
Hey Hey! Big Ditch! 👍
Yep - Mike's gift to himself from his trip to Buffalo. - John
@@BrewDudes awesome, wish I knew Im a brewer there, would've loved to say hi!
I may have missed some of your explanations. Do you guys think it would make a good dual purpose hop? Merry Christmas to you all. Cheers
I would say Idaho 7 is better suited as a flavor/aroma hop but give it a try! - John
what the heck is a pixie stick - uk!
HA! Its a flavors sugar candy item here in the states. It comes in a paper straw sized tube that you rip the top off and pour in your mouth. All sugar, but with different fruit flavors added to it. It's a childhood thing for us. Cheers! -Mike
Great to watch this after a $hitty day of work. Thanks John and Mike!
You're welcome - sorry about your work day.
Cheers and happy Festivus for the rest of us!
Happy Festivus!
I made a Idaho 7 smash once. Foot, and skunk is what I got a bunch of on aroma. And pepper on the flavor...*shrugs* nothing like the descriptors or what you guys have got here.. wonder if it was a bad batch I got?
Same here. Not a fan personally.
Also for me. Tasted all washed out. Fruity but not good at all. Now I need to buy it from another source and redo it again.
Not sure - it's all a crap shoot sometimes. - John
Noted!
Worth a shot.
Great video as usual and I love pixie stix and smarties (American not Canadian)… happy Christmas guys!
Thanks!
