Awaken church in San Diego has decided to change its name to “Awaken Family Friendly Strip Club” and even began its service with a.. uhh.. strip tease of sorts. Can you guess why? Hint: ‘lockdowns’. Alright Fam, we want to know your thoughts on this! Both on the pastor’s “strip tease”, and the church refusing to close down and calling itself a strip club to stay open. 😊
i think they went way too far, It makes sense that they did it but it does not make it okay. It might be worth it to look at the church and it's fruit and if this is like their character to do these funny silly things. A Pastor should not be repping Christ by "stripping" whether he was joking or not

I'm shook. I understand that that's what they have to do to keep open, but at least they could take the clothes off with discretion. No need for all the circus. It's uncomfortable. Imagine if it was your husband on the pulpit :/ personally, I'm not ok with it
My initial thought was they were just having fun with it, but I could also see where people would feel uncomfortable, though. I wouldn’t write them off for their actions.
I went to a Christian college and each year we had a Halloween party. My senior year someone dressed up as Hugh Hefner and two of his friends dressed up as literal rabbits. They were asked to leave. Now these three guys were not trying to support the pornography industry or celebrate HH and they were just trying to be funny. However, I agree with the decision to have them leave. While they were not trying to do harm, and the rabbit costumes were legitimately funny I don't think Christian should pretend to be something that is directly against what we believe and our circumstances shouldn't change how we live. So the question I have is, if they had done these changes not under COVID/Lockdown circumstances would you be okay with it? If not then I think you are choosing actions based on circumstances and not based on Christ-Living.

I am 100% with Hannah on this one. I don't know who in their right mind could do such actions and call it okay. Might as well drink apple juice and act drunk on stage for one minute and offend every ex-drunkard who has turned their life to Christ. I would stop attending that church in a heartbeat.

Agreed, it’s not different simply because he is a guy. There could be women who have struggled with pornography addiction or sexual sin and lust as well or people who struggle with homosexual thoughts.

A lot of people come to church and find Jesus because of histories with sex addiction, pornography, sexual abuse etc... this feels kind of like a slap in the face to them as if it’s mocking their very real struggles.

Yeahhh... this is a bit too far. I understand why they are doing it and possibly the video was just meant for giggles, but it didn’t need to go that far. I think Hannah was right on the money when she said the pastor could have explained what had to happen in order for them to remain open. Could have definitely taken some items off in a less “sexual” way. Perhaps they should take some cues from Mr. Rogers. 🤷🏻♀️😂

I am not sure though twisting the law to fit to keep the church open is necessarily showing love. for the congregation or neighbours/community/public.
If they'd call themselves a "strip-club" to do some sort of protest and show politicians and the world how ridiculous that order is - that would be actually really cool. But them "pseudo-stripping" (and filming and putting it online...?!) and pretending its all fun and games? Well - No.

I live in California and I wish I could say this was a joke 😂. I feel like churches should be able to open up safely with social distancing because covid is serious. As someone that struggles with sexual thoughts, I think it went a little too far. I'm disappointed that this is what we have to resort to in order to be open. Love the video guys!

Normally I wouldn't approve but this is California in 2020.
As a parent, that would be highly inappropriate for my kids. I have a teen and 10 year old. I wouldn't want either of them to be there. Why not be something else deemed "essential" instead of a strip club?
I know it feels more satisfying to point out how ridiculous this example is, but the bible clearly teaches us that we won't convince fools without becoming a fool ourselves. I am all for fun, but this is not right. Thinking specifically about people who have struggles with adultlry sin and children. It isn't fair to those that battle sexual sin to mock what they have struggled with.

I feel like it was fine. They didn't actually strip. Nothing revealing was done. This was clearly done as a fun middle finger to the government. And I feel like this type is blatant pushback from churches and organizations is needed right now

Online church lets us worship together in spirit while keeping each other safe. I believe that it is loving to keep a distance physically to prevent others from getting this virus.
I agree with Paul I don't see a problem with what they did to keep the church open however like he said maybe it would be different if it was women doing it let's hope they keep the women off the stage when it's time to do that. I 100% understand that we shouldn't look like the world but I don't think that they took it too far I do think that they were just trying to have a little bit of fun with it but maybe change the music.
Morgan is also right the churches do need to stand up and fight back.
This is 100% crazy to me and how we as Christians don't see that the devil is definitely in play here as far as keeping the churches closed and opening places like strip clubs.

Paul is way off the path and into the weeds and briers and poison ivy on this one . When the government tells you to do something against God like not opening you are to do what God says without becoming like the world I'm just saying just because strip clubs are allowed to stay open and be looked at as esenatal doesn't mean a church becomes a strip club to stay open ! You stay true to God if you open and don't compromise yourself ! And this is not a good first impression to baby Christians if you will those who are new Christians go to church and see this no wander we have an exadus of young people from the church ! God has given me a heart for the next generation and has placed me in a minestry that I get to work with young people ! You Go Hannah straight 🔥 as always ! A little misleading. It was actually a judge in San Diego county who issued a temporary restraining order which allowed the strip club in question to stay open. It wasn't by the governor's orders. Also Hebrews 10:25 notes that it is "the habit of some" to not gather together. The writer of Hebrews discourages that as a practice, but I personally think common sense is still a given. My God is gracious enough to allow us to be physically apart for a time in extraordinary circumstances such as this pandemic. Don't know about anyone else's church, but mine is still serving the community through its food bank and other ministries. There are, after all, other ways to be "open" and help the hurting.

P+M I love yall, but please please please provide accurate information. Its not all strip clubs. Its two in San Diego. Gavin Newsom didn't enforce this, it was local judge offering the clubs exemptions. They won the case on a technicality by claiming that they were operating as a restaurant. Your opinions are your own and that's not what I'm going after. I just think with your platform and with your audience, presenting accurate information is key.
Obviously this was a ridiculous ruling. The main purpose of a strip club is live "entertainment" which is explicitly mentioned in the state ordinance as not acceptable for opening up. I personally don't think its wise for church's to be open but its clear that strip clubs shouldn't be open either.
Final point. My dad is my pastor so this would be horrifying for me on several levels.

I agree with Hannah. The way they went about it was too wordly. Some women who saw it may have felt even slightly aroused or tempted and the pastor will be accountable for provoking that. They should have done differently and with a sermon on sin and lust and temptation and how to overcome it

ALSO no one can stop you from praying, from loving and honoring God, that is done in your own mind, body, and soul and no one can take your mind or soul, if your heart is full of love and honor for God, that is all that matters.
Also, you can also invite people over for small group church meetings and stuff and you can have church-time over zoom, facetime, etc, there are lots of ways to stay connected to people you love.
Definitely could have taken a different approach, maybe everyone close your eyes or face the other way and take a moment to pray while they do there thing on stage🤷♀️ props for staying open

I agree! These are DEF challenging times for the church and I pray the Holy Spirit continue to guide us in the truth so we can stand firm no matter the opposition! These regulations are NOT MAKING ANY SENSE whatsoever and it has nothing to do with what they say is because of "COVID"! I agree with the girls... I cringed a little with the music and how they took off the jackets LOL it could be changed a bit without the music and certain movements but then again putting myself in their shoes they're just doing their best to stay open. I don't judge them for it... who knows what we will need to come up with when something like that happens here in TX. Lord help us all with the days to come! Love you guys! xoxo

I think he technically had to do it for 30 seconds for our to be legally declared a strip club. He didn't actually strip, he took off his jacket and ties (maybe belt).

Hey Guys, I live in Chicago or in a suburb near Chicago. Out churches are allowed to open. They put restrictions on the number of people allowed in a building at a time and people have to wear a mask, but that means our pastor holds more services. We’ve found many ways of worshipping in creative ways. we also sanitize the Sanctuary between services. So far most people have stayed safe and still had their opportunity to be closer to God!

everything is based on mentality. so i get your perspectives. i personally didnt see any problem at all, because ive been in african churches and pastor removing jackets and throwing, and dancing isnt anything new. but they should sue to make sure they open again as a church. God bless. Keep it up!

@@PaulandMorgan I think the Church needs to stand up to tyranny. Think Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego. Many Christians aren't willing to do what it takes bc, even though something might not break God's law, it's "yucky." However, it was enlightening to hear Hannah's perspective on not tempting ppl w/ that past. I can really empathise w/ that.

My first reaction was just laughing. It was funny, it just was.
I understand Hannah's concerns, and I'm honestly glad that she voices them, because we never want to forget that perspective and approve things that shouldn't be approved of. I personally think this instance was harmless because it was honest and meant as a complete joke. It was not a true compromise. But, again, Hannah is right to question it, and we should question these things. Overall, I'm glad the church is doing what they can to fight back. Go them. 👍🏻

I agree with Hannah, I think they should of put layers on and while they were taking off layers they could of been praying and rebuking the enemy! But altogether about it i agree! PRAISE GOD!
It's NOT that strip clubs are essential.
It's that the risk of transmitting the virus in a mega-church like this one is HIGH due to singing, sitting close together, services that last 1.5 to 2 hours, taking communion, shaking hands, anti-mask attitudes, etc.
Obviously the risk of sitting in a strip club is MUCH lower.
I live in San Diego, and that stuff was truly messed up when it happened.
I loved listening to this discussion. All 3 of you had good points. Iagree with Hannah that they went slightly to far by doing the suggestive tease, 😬 but I understand the difficult situation they're in. 🙂 I would suggest that they would use scripture (Heb. 12:1) to represent the 'stripping' or something else to make it biblical. 😄

Hmm.. this reminds me of the movie about what’s going to happen to whoever’s left behind during the great tribulation. The left behind Christians refused the mark of the beast, went hiding and thought of copying a counterfeit mark in order for them to survive at least buying food supplies. - this is being wise as serpents and harmless like doves. But calling your church a strip club and doing some strip tease is very uncomfortable and I actually agree with Hannah’s opinion. 🤔 The disciples of Jesus went preaching the gospel at the cost of their lives.. what’s happening today is like a modern way of what happened in the past.. well, the enemy is heading there, like in Victoria, Australia. They’re going to start criminalizing Christians. But what would Jesus do? The King won’t joke about His Father’s temple and Kingdom. I don’t see Him compromising His image to the world. I’d see Him overthrowing tables. ~ my thoughts. 😣🤷🏻♀️

I am definitely more with Hannah on this issue. I think they probably took it to far. My mind kept going to verses like Ephesians 5:11-12 which tells us, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.”
The Bible seems very clear that sin is not to be taken lightly. I do believe that there heart was most likely in the right place but still I don’t know if condoning sin (even if unintentionally) should be the route to take.

You don’t “need” church. You can worship from home. . .
We need face-to-face community. We need to be able to hug, comfort and encourage each other, sharing the Lord's Supper together. The children need a chance to play together with other children from good families and grow up in a safe environment. The youth groups need to meet to encourage the teenagers and young adults in their walks with God and also simply to just stay sane. The older people also need the younger people and the other way around. Sure, if they'd rather not risk getting sick, they can stay home, but they need to be able to make that decision themselves. There's so much more to church than listening to Christian music and hearing a sermon.
Very Bizarre from all angles. Why are strip clubs allowed to stay open ? that makes no sense. 2. One would think the church could come up with another loop hole to stay open. I don't think the strip club thing would work as one most likely needs a license from the city/zoning etc. 3. I agree that the govenment comes up with some inconsistent laws. I live in London England, and we just came out of lockdown this week, A rule was we could not meet friends indoors. However we could cue up with 30 people in a coffee shop to get a coffee to go. 4 Just for laughs, A ligitement restaraunt in London that wants to only attract local people ( not tourists) looks like a very sleezy strip club to keep tourists away. I have not been there yet. lol

First, I want to thank you both for doing this collab and talking about this controversial issue and many other controversial issues. Keep doing it, please. I think what I saw was kind of funny but also uncomfortable because I wouldn’t like it if my church’s main pastor did that exact thing. I also see the point in how it doesn’t help people much if they are or have struggled with porn-related issues. I think it’s funny in that it’s a way of mocking our governor, honestly (I live in Bakersfield, CA). I didn’t know about this happened in San Diego until watching the video or even that Newsome publicly said he considered strip clubs essential. Here’s my criticism: I think it’s sick that he feels that those clubs, where so much sexual sin can be committed, are considered essential and he’s exerting oppressive power and being a hypocrite of a leader. Personally, it’s hard to have respect for the man. I understand why this specific church in San Diego did what they did but I don’t 100% agree on it; but as you said Paul: “Desperate times cause for desperate measures.” 😂 May God bless all three of you.

There are other ways to meet with the brethren. I don't think this was appropriate at all. I'm with Hannah on this. I can't picture Jesus wanting to be involved with something like this...

I would agree this was very cringe for me to watch! I say why not take a deeper look at the meaning of “church” and “gathering of the brethren” it will not necessitate a few thousand people and holding a traditional church service. There are other options if you don’t want to take a stand against the governor’s mandates and hold regular services, small groups or house church which is way more intimate anyway. A lot of things we do in church are not necessarily biblical, just traditional. But I AGREE that we can’t not get together in some way to continue unifying the body during a tumultuous season.

This is definitely sexual temptation for women, specifically the belt thing, and I know it’s maybe not overly exaggerated, but definitely triggering, specially to women who struggle with sexual sin , and being that a church should be a safe place makes it worse
I don’t think the pastor intentions where bad, but maybe he should have done it in a different way
Or this San Diego church could’ve been like my church near Los Angeles where we just opened up a moth or two later and filed a lawsuit against the governor🤗 Or like Calvary Chino Hills where they didn’t even close once🙌

I live in San Diego and the reason why strip clubs are open is because San Diego strip clubs filed a lawsuit and a Judge granted a temporary injunction that stops “any government entity or law enforcement officer from enforcing the provisions of the cease-and-desist orders.”
I feel uncomfortable with what the church did, because they could have stayed open if they had JUST done their service outside. My church is still open because we hold service in the parking lot lol
I would also like to say that I don’t agree with strip clubs staying open since they’re not essential but it really wasn’t the governor’s fault, but the judge who granted the temporary injunction.

I think it was ingenious for the church to be so bold. Though, you have to tread LIKELY. If it was the grand opening, I think they were making fun of the fact that they had to do that. But, i don't think it should be a consistent thing because the attention is always on the Lord.

I really liked this video because it made me think differently. I had three thoughts: First was WHAT??? WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT???
The second was after they explained why they did that and I understood that they were just trying to find a “legal” way to stay open. And I thought it was acceptable to do that, but it being called a strip club, made it a lot more uncomfortable. Also, I came to the conclusion that the church should meet up no matter what, no matter the consequences, they should continue to have a church service.

Gotta say 10/10 video.. at the same time Hannah is right on this one.. but at that same time I'm with Paul on the fact that they were just having fun with it.. I'm not a girl either so it might've been more uncomfortable looking from their POV but I definitely see what Hannah and Morgan were saying when they say they probably should've went about it differently.. then again we don't know if any of them had even the slightest bad intentions with what they are doing so I think it could be on the slightly okay side.. just my thoughts.👍 But fire video overall 🔥

I think taking off the belt and throwing it to the audience is what took it too far. Also, the way the guy turned around and moved his shoulders.
They should run the church as usual and pay the fines if need be; that's what one particular family owned gym did in nearby Riverside, CA. So if a family owned gym can stand up to Gov. Newsome, then why does the church walk in fear. Clearly they're walking in fear because they have to use deception in order to stay open...just be honest but bold at the same time.

Strip clubs offer food, drinks, and entertainment. That means they can be considered restaurants, bars or live entertainment venues. Bars and entertainment venues are closed, but restaurants are not, so technically strip clubs are still allowed to serve food. They are not allowed to serve drinks without food, or have dancers right now. They can't dance on the stage or do any of that stuff they usually do. Please do some research before you make a video like this. It took one google search to find this information. Churches are dangerous right now and should not be open.
Churches are in no way dangerous. I live here in California and go to church ever chance I get, unfortunately now we are stuck outside in the cold, but that ain’t going to stop me or others at my congregation.
