  • ‘The Chosen Scene Season 2 Episode 5 Causing Controversy And Dallas Jenkins Response- Our Thoughts’
This is interesting. Let me start by saying we’ve been fans of The Chosen ever since watching the POWERFUL scene where Jesus redeems Mary in episode one. Now fast forward to episode 5 of season two. The Chosen has taken some criticism for a decision they made regarding Mary’s character and storyline. Dallas Jenkins, the director of the show, addressed the criticism head-on in a recent UA-cam video. We have some positive takeaways and some concerns. Here’s our thoughts, let us know yours in the comments :)

This was an irresponsible thing for Dallas to say to people who watch Jesus on TV. They may not be bible readers. It hurts me to see people be afraid of their sins because they are forgiven. Try standing up for righteousness because of the Holy Ghost. Your sins can poison your relationship with Jesus

@Paul and Morgan I like that you chose to open this discussion rather than spit criticism at Dallas for this, very commendable. Also, I agree with most of the points you 2 made. Also,
Romans 7:23 says this -But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
So like Morgan said, we are in a battle and while as God's special people we should aim for holiness by all means necessary, we will falter occasionally because there is a war within ourselves, with our flesh and our soul.
So you're right, if we mention our struggle with sin, as Dallas did, we should also mention our fight to overcome it.

Appreciate this thoughtful and deep approach! To be clear…Dallas would never imply that sin is to be accepted as okay because we do it regularly. And as you see in Episode 6, Mary needed to return, and she needed to repent.
Dallas just can’t cover all the topics in each video, and The Chosen can’t cover the totality of each issue in each episode.

@@PaulandMorgan Paul and Morgan, I think it's great if you have Dallas on the show to talk about the Chosen but frankly don't drag him on the show to ask him to "Put your mind at ease" to discuss this. It is abundantly obvious that Dallas does not condone sin.
No offense to all of you but if you had done research on him or just continued to watch the chosen you would be abundantly aware that the Disciples are asked to do a lot for Jesus.
Dallas' point is obviously to say that people can backslide whether they've experienced Jesus or not. It is not to say that because people sin it's okay.
To be blunt: Having him on when his team has already answered and clarified for you what he means is unprofessional and ungraceful.
You keep saying "We're obviously not saying your perfect" and yet because Dallas says you sin all the time he has a "Soft view of Sin". Which is wrong. We are sinners....sorry to disappoint you. You're not saying anything different then what Dallas is saying.
Have him on but don't put him on trial to ask him a question that you should already know the answer to.

“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” Galatians‬ ‭5:16‬ ‭
Making a mistake that is sinful is one thing, backsliding is a whole other story. if a Christian is truly in a backslidden state, then they have to ask their self, “Am I fully surrendered to God”, because if I am, I’m no longer a slave to a sin nature. And I’m not talking about being perfect, I’m talking about being free!

There’s a reason Jesus told people to go and «sin no more».. As christians, sin should grieve us because we know it grieves the father.
To just be sayin that «oh well but I’m a sinner and am gonna continue sinning» is just an excuse to not take responsibility over Your own sin because Jesus quote «loves me and died for me, so I dont have to do anything».
In Jesus we have the transforming power to live Holy as He is Holy.
Am I saying that there wont be hard moments and things that will test our faith, No. But we should always watch and pray, so we don’t fall into temptation.

I have full confidence in Dallas’ vision for the show. I actually appreciate the direction he’s taking with Mary because of what I’ve experienced in my own life and how much I identify with her. No one, no matter how deep-rooted of a believer you are has never not sinned again in some way after being saved. Not to say that once you’re a believer your sinful actions are excused for you to intentionally continue to sin, but that when you fall into temptation, Jesus still loves you, will be there for you, to REDEEM you from that sin and cleanse you from it. Granted the cleansing process is just that, a PROCESS but Jesus within us is what changes our hearts and in turn our hearts desires. With that said I trust that God is moving and alive through Dallas, his team of writers, and the cast to portray Jesus in a new and tangible way.

I love that Paul is so vulnerable about sin. The fact that we see a lot of people in the Bible fall into sin and “backslide” I think it’s cool to see that they put it into the chosen. Saul, Samson, Peter, David, the list goes on. I think God shows us these people so that we can see his redeeming and merciful love despite our sinning nature. The Bible is a story of hope. Does Mary then realize she’s let her flesh win in the chosen? What a cool story of hope that God wins despite her moment of turning away from him.

Hi Paul & Morgan! So here is my thoughts…
Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with what they did with Mary Magdalene, because personally I was caught in terrible sin as a young child-I fell into it even after being saved-and I stopped for three years…only to backslide again. That same year I backslid though, the Lord really delivered me of my sin-praise the Lord, for His mercy in pulling me out and taking me on a journey of purification afterward!-, therefore I totally get what happened to Mary Magdalene! I actually also agreed with Dallas’ response video, though I also see and agree with what you guys are saying. Just because there is grace, does not mean we can keep sinning, but also like Paul said, we do sometimes fall to sin, even though we try our best not to; but we should always resist sin and like Morgan said, say “no” to the flesh!
And I’m definitely praying for Dallas and the team, that they’d continue in God’s wisdom and under His protection so that the devil cannot lead them astray, because the tons of critic against this show (stupid critic that came even before the controversy on Mary Magdalene’s backsliding) is a sign that soo many people are being pulled out of the devil’s darkness because of this show, and the enemy hates that. I totally get what happened to Mary Magdalene in the show, just cause it happened to me. I also appreciated Dallas’ response and I believe his heart is right and that he’d probably agree with y’all (maybe he just didn’t think of the other Scriptures in the moment as he focused on the topic and why they did what they did), but I also appreciate your response, because some people might take what Dallas said the wrong way as license to sin, when we still always have to crucify the flesh when we’re tempted to sin. 💁🏻‍♀️😁✝️

Episode 6 clarifies Dallas’s belief about sinning after salvation - Mary’s slide back into sin is different to before salvation as she is now armed with the strength to withdraw from sin and is now more prepared to fight sin sooner/ will more ready to see the early signs as she continues her walk - more typical of being a young in the faith believer.

Voddie Baucham once said that the longer he's been a Christian, the more he knows of his sin. I don't think Dallas was softening sin, rather it's likely his point was to convict Christians who think they barely ever sin and comfort Christians who feel like their sin is keeping them from God.
Like how Proverbs tells us that singing songs to a troubled heart is not good, there are some words for one circumstance and others for other circumstances. Some people need to hear of the immense evil sin is, while other people need to hear that other Christians sin and God even still forgives and loves them. This episode was for the latter.

Wow, where do I begging lol😅 the process God has allowed me to go through didn’t make much sense to me in the beginning. I won’t get into details to protect other brothers and sisters but I now stand stronger in God than before. My faith has grown in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve learned the love of God and faithfulness more than I thought it was. His mercy hit me a newer levels! I struggled in my flesh while my spirit and souls worship God. A year later, the reality and UNDERSTANDING (diff. From knowing) of what it truly is like to be free from sin even when temptation and sin seems to surround you, it doesn’t not. We are no longer to slave. We may struggle but it cannot take us down. It will not take you down. It may seem like it surrounds your entire life but the God almighty is the one really fighting even if you feel like your struggles have pushed God away. God never leaves and God never forsakes. Don’t look at what you are seeing but walk by faith. Don’t let fear crush your faith. Don’t let confusion and lie and don’t punish yourself because you are freeeeee! Jesus death was not in vein. He has risen and sin no longer holds you in chains. Trust in him. Trust in him! Don’t let fear choke out the faith that God has given you. God enjoys to strengthen us! When you focus all your focus on trusting God, you are strengthen to turn from sin. It has nothing to how much we know and leaning on our own knowledge and how strong we can try to be. It comes from God and comes from focusing on him. That’s why we gotta pray because you show you depend on him. Seek the kingdom first and everything will follow.

I can totally understand that episode and Mary's situation. There are so many Christians who backslides. I can feel it.
I was on the verge of backsliding but God saved me.
I've seen many people backslide from God. And then came back to Jesus.
And, once saved is NOT always saved.
we NEED to repent of our sins every minute and every time. that's it.

I was just reading Romans 6,7,8 today morning. I was going through a repetitive life of lukewarm and I hated myself so much for not being able to fully give myself to God. Then I learned from these verses that we can't earn God's love by our own strength. Romans 6:7 says, NLT: "For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin." Trusting in His ressurection and His righteousness is what enable us to overcome our flesh.

I think it's important for a TV show that deals with the Gospel to bring up things like backsliding. It's something that happens to every Christian, so it's good to talk about it. Yes, absolutely, strive to walk in holiness, but admit that you can fall. God knows we will fall, and repentance is a part of the journey of holiness... Also, she isn't literally a Christian yet, not as we know Christianity. The Spirit isn't living in her yet, so He isn't able to do the restorative work in her life. 😊 Just some thoughts! I think Morgan hit fire around minute 13. My family is split (mostly against) in opinions on the series as a whole. It is interesting hearing your opinions on it. I find Dallas' intentions to be good, but I sincerely wonder if the whole thing isn't a bit dangerous. It gives us these ideas about how the disciples were and how Jesus was, and I don't know that we are supposed to know that. When I read the Bible I don't like how I suddenly see Dallas' vision for Peter, Levi, Mary, etc. I want Holy Spirit to give me insight into who these people were/are not a TV show. It's not Biblical, and it takes a whole lot of liberties. YES, it can be impactful... maybe for some, eternally (not for me to say). My biggest concern is that people will be deceived into a lie because good intentions don't always produce good results. (As you pointed out in refuting Dallas' response video) It is sad to me that most Christians are raised to believe that they are supposed to struggle with sin. Thank you for speaking truth from the Bible on that! I wanted to like the series, but this just makes me more certain my family is right in staying away. I don't think Jesus needs a TV show to make Him relatable.

Yes, we struggle as believers with old sins, unfortunately the enemy knows our past and uses it again us. I don’t believe we stay sinning because the Holy Spirit will Continue to work in us, but that doesn’t mean we will not fall sometimes.
And speaking specifically about the Chosen episode, if we really think about it, in those days, even though they were walking with Jesus, they did not have the power of the Holy Spirit within them. That’s the same reason why all of the disciples denied Jesus before the crucifixion. Not that they didn’t believe in him, but in their human nature, and without the power of the Holy Spirit within them…it’s easy to fall back into old habits.
But as with everything else, the fact that it is a TV show, even though it’s portraying the life of Jesus, they are trying to incorporate parts of the story that we don’t really know anything about, and I’m OK with that, again because that’s what a TV show is for, for me the most important part is that as long as they don’t change what is essential for salvation and the truth of the gospel, I see it as a good TV. Show.
And yes, we should always go back to the Bible, read the full chapter, so we don’t get things out of context. And always pray for discernment, even if we’re watching a TV show, or a sermon at a church. That’s the precious power of the Holy Spirit within us. I do believe we are no longer slaves to sin, because we surrender our lives to Christ, but the enemy is going to continue to try and push us towards sin, but it doesn’t mean that we have to surrender to that, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power love and self-control. And that’s the difference of having the Holy Spirit in our lives.
But Jesus told the woman at the well, go, and sin no more. He knew we could overcome this with his power in our lives, not perfection, but Is a continuing sanctification process. 🥰🙏🏼

It's interesting that he talked about backsliding to begin with because many people think once saved always saved and you can never ever not be saved even if you deny God intentionally and directly. But... The fact he believes people HAVE to sin every day.. what would be the purpose of being saved if we are literally the same person???

You guys are absolutely right. Paul’s writing style included him speaking as someone who is struggling. He isn’t saying he sins all the time. He’s showing the answer to someone who is sinning all of the time. We are not called to fight the good fight against sin but the good fight of faith. If we believe that we will struggle in sin for the rest of our lives WE WILL but if we believe what the Bible says, that we are free from slavery to sin then we will also as the word says “walk as Jesus walked” free from sin and happily enslaved to righteousness.

Paul didn’t say he sins all the time. He says there is a struggle between his flesh and his spirit that when he tries to do good, he finds evil is present. Those 2 are not the same and especially his final conclusion with that topic, which is that Christ will redeem him from this wretched state that he is in and make him a new creation not only in this world but in the world to come. Christians should stop using that as an excuse to sin because John says whoever is in Christ does not make a practice of sinning. Now it’s one thing to fall like David or Abraham or all those people... it’s a whole different thing to say, "I sin all the time”

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Paul and Morgan! While I haven't been keeping up with The Chosen myself, I strongly and wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said.
I actually wanted to touch on something you mentioned briefly in this video: the part where Mary Magdalene takes off her head covering. As a Christian single woman who didn't grow up wearing the head covering but now wears one (by personal choice, after some study of 1 Corinthians 11 and much wrestling with God about it 😅), I was intrigued when you brought this up and decided to go watch the scene myself for a bit of context. Here's what I know about the teachings of the head covering and why that one choice by Mary was so significant:
Back in Bible times, Jewish women were taught to wear a head covering as a symbol of submission to their husbands (or fathers if they were single and of marriageable age, though obviously most women in the OT and NT were married off rather quickly). It also became a cultural sign of sexual purity, as the Gentile women - especially harlots and prostitutes - were known for having their hair uncovered and flowing freely (though there were some exceptions to this, as we see in the story of Tamar when she dresses as a harlot and covers her hair and face to hide her identity from Judah). We can kind of see this cultural symbolism in Numbers 5: if a married woman was being accused by her husband of sexual immorality, she was to stand in front of all the people, allow the priest to remove her head covering, and drink the bitter water as a sign of whether she was guilty or innocent (cf. Numb. 5:11-31, especially v. 18).
All of this is significant in the case of Mary for multiple reasons. When she first approaches the man at the door and asks to speak with someone specific, the doorkeeper initially turns her away and tells her to go home because she "seems like a nice girl." Based on the culture of that time, I'm guessing this was in part due to her choice in clothing - including wearing a head covering. Considering the next thing Mary does is take off her head covering, and considering this is the point where the doorkeeper begins to take her seriously, this would make sense. Of course, this isn't the only reason why removing the head covering is so significant for Mary. Remember: Mary Magdalene is being portrayed as a former prostitute who's been sexually abused. As I mentioned earlier, harlots and prostitutes especially were known for having their hair down and being wild and seductive with it. That one decision by Mary was a real turning point in her choosing to go back to her old lifestyle - at least for the moment.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! I'm actually considering going back and (re)watching The Chosen now as a result of this video. 😊

Paul, Dallas is not taking a soft approach to sin. I hate to break it to you but unless you believe that you are perfect in the hear and now in your flesh you are going to sin. Get used to it, at least until you go to Heaven. That's something that even you acknowledge in this video.
Dallas doesn't need to hear that "You need to pick up your cross daily" just because he acknowledges that sin has happened and will continue to happen.
Also Paul refers to himself as the "Chief of sinners" not I "was" but I AM the cheif of sinners 1 Timothy 1:15 -
Paul did still sin after he was saved that's not really up for debate.
It's not "giving yourself an excuse" it's being realistic. Do you have any idea how many people lose their faith and just give up because of trying to be too perfect?
It doesn't matter if that's your intention it's what you are doing by teaching this doctrine. Sin is separating you from God? No. We have imputed righteousness....God does not look on you as a sinner because he sees Christ in you, no matter what.
Yes we are still called to repentance obviously, dallas doesn't deny that.

I was literally watching and before the audio cut out thought “I wonder if they ever watch it back before cutting it and go “I could say that more succinctly” hahaha.
Anyway, really good thoughts! I didn’t have a problem with the episode & thought there were enough tells throughout that someone should have really checked on Mary to make sure she was ok. I think it actually just showed how the other disciples are all learning too and would make mistakes like overlooking what was going on (coz I know we all do in certain situations) with Mary and focusing on themselves. I think it also highlights when people feel on the edge of a group and how easy it is for people to lose sight of them. There was a lot more underlying to it than people are discussing, that’s for sure. Like Matthew picked up she wasn’t ok, but hadn’t a moment to check on her before the demoniac & Simon was the first to realize she was gone, even though Ramah was told to look for her.

The part that disturbed me wasn’t Mary messing up, it was Jesus’s response when she returned. He said, “I don’t require much,” that is completely the opposite of the Bible. Jesus says we must die to self and take up our cross. Yes, it can be very hard because he requires every part of us and dying to self requires everything. So yeah, that one response was a bummer.

I was in the same boat, although I didn't react as strongly to the scene, so I feel for you. I actually disagree with the scene because of how hopeless I felt watching the scene, and as someone who has cast out demons in the past few years, I know that when encountering a demon, the last thing that comes to my mind is temptation to fall back into the things I did under demonic influence. I'm not saying I didn't backslide, because I have, but seeing someone demon possessed has only ever served as a reminder of where God has taken me from, and only strengthened my reliance on him in that moment. I just felt this scene fed into the fear that many who have dealt with demonic issues have, which is the fear that maybe God can't really keep them away, or that maybe if I slip up, I'll be back into that place. I just didn't see how that scene could be life giving. I hope you're doing well! Know that God is your strength, and he goes before and behind you to fight those battles. Much love!

Hi Paul and Morgan! I was wondering when you guys were gonna talk about The Chosen. I smile every time I see you two appear on screen in season 1 episode 5. I got to be an extra too in season 2 and I had SO MUCH FUN!
In response to what y'all talked about in this video, I really appreciate them portraying Mary backsliding. It makes her feel more real, human, and relatable. And like Dallas said, just because you believe in and follow Jesus, doesn't mean that your life is gonna be easy or perfect. Speaking from LOTS of personal experience. However, I don't think Dallas is disregarding the fact that you should run away from sin, resist temptation, or make excuses for your sin. In his video, I think he was simply trying to get the point across to people that followers of Jesus will still mess up and that it was possible that his disciples did the same. At least, that's what I took away from it when I first saw his video.

I took it as a this is what is statement. Paul did still sin despite what he preached it should be. I think Dallas's statement was simply a reasoning for why he felt it would make sense to portray Mary as backsliding, rather than a blanket statement about how we should approach sin. That being said, I want to be clear, that I fully agree with your assessment of the context of Paul's words.

Backsliding is easy to do. Following Jesus is not because it goes against our flesh. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to run from sin, but there will be times when we willingly walk back into sin because it is easy. And yes, Jesus died for our sins and yes I mess up too. But I think it should not be something that you are doing daily and you just say it's okay because I'm forgiven. It is still breaking God's holy law and I would even go as far as to say it is another stripe across His back. When you think of it that way, it becomes more difficult to want to sin if you truly have a relationship with Jesus. Thank you for sharing truth Paul and Morgan!

Grace - The power of the Gospel. This is a book by Andrew Wommack that just gave so much clarity and confidence for me in the grace of God and what it means to be dead to sin. I highly encourage you to read it if you haven’t. It’s basically a deep study on Romans but wow it really changed my mindset. Something that was spoken about in the book was that we need to realise that our sin nature died with Jesus and we have been given a new nature of righteousness. Then why do we still have a ‘natural tendency’ to sin? It’s because that old nature programmed our brains to think in a certain way. However, that old nature is now dead yet our minds have not been reprogrammed. That is why it is so important to constantly be renewing our mind throughout our Christian walk. We need to know that it is not our old sun nature that causes us to sin but rather an unrenewed mind. When we gave our lives to God we took on the new nature of righteousness. So we need to stop viewing ourselves as sinners saved by grace. We are not sinners anymore! We are righteous. The book says it so well. “I know now that I’m not a sinner trying to become holy. I am the righteous whom Satan is trying to make unholy. I’m not the sick trying to get well. I am the well that the devil is trying to make sick. I am not the poor trying to be prosperous. I am the prosperous that the enemy is trying to make poor. I’ve found it much easier to fight from the position of victory than to try to fight to obtain a position of victory. It’s infinitely easier to release something I already have than to go get something I don’t.” The reason we are holy and righteous has nothing to do with our actions and everything to do with God’s grace. There’s no way we can live up to the standards of the law, the law is there to point us to our need of a saviour - Jesus. We don’t choose to live holy and avoid sin because we want to be loved by God, He already loves us despite of everything we’ve done. We choose to live holy because that’s our new nature, it’s who God has created us to be and we don’t want to allow the enemy access into our lives anymore. I absolutely love the show The Chosen, it’s really made the gospels come alive for me and I must say the Mary situation didn’t even bother me, but what you guys have said makes perfect sense. You guys are really amazing and I think it’s so important for you to just be bringing truth and reminding people to not just believe everything they watch but to always refer it back to The Word and what God says. Keep doing what you doing, God has given you so much wisdom.

Since nobody here knows me, I will admit that after my very real experience with the Lord and began radically changing and growing in my faith......6 years later I found myself in a very real clinical depression and for a season, listened to the voice of the enemy and pushed away God's voice and began cutting myself like I had many years earlier. It then took a heavy dose of God's word and rebuking Satan in the name of Jesus to get out of my head and out of my thoughts that I radically overcame that season. For almost a year I was back to myself until another rough season arose....but the months before that was the only season in my life where I had gone back to old ways giving into a sin that had so much control over me. Backsliding is real, even though we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us! In the scene where Mary looks up and realizes what she was doing, then leaves the money behind.....I remember feeling that same feeling....realizing I had messed up but also feeling like God was so disappointed in me after bringing me as far as He had. I can definitely relate to this scene. I think the difference in theological circles is whether she continued to stay in that place...so we understand that no one who has truly been set free by Jesus will walk away for good. We ARE prone to wander, but for the born again believer, God will always draw us back to Him. No, this was never mentioned about Mary in the gospels, so if I were to argue about this detail, it would be more because they altered her story of her walk with Jesus. But I think we have to remember this is a show taking artistic liberties...so maybe this was their way to remind us who do backslide that God will always draw us back to Him and never once stopped loving us...and our redemption was NEVER conditional upon what we would do or not do....that God is sovereign!

I agree with Dallas because it happen to me. I was baptized in 2013 and backslided for a few years after. Due to friends and company I was keeping and just the world around me and my fault for not opening my Bible and staying in the word and not going to church. I’m back and feel so close to Jesus I take steps everyday to make sure it stays that way. I also believe the Holy Spirit is working in me. I read my Bible everyday have found a great church and so many good resources. I have put boundaries in place with old friends and distance myself. I’m aware of backsliding don’t want that that ever to happen again. With grace and mercy from Jesus Christ he has brought me back to him I’m so thankful for his patience and love for me.

I completely agree that claiming to be a sinner instead of claiming righteousness is speaking death and excuse over yourself. Yes, we are still human, but life and death is in the power of the tounge. We don't need to be declaring that we are sinners. But yes, we do mess up. We are human. I think Dallas might be talking exclusively about that aspect in response to people deciding that Mary backsliding is unrealistic or terrible. I think he's specifically driving home the point that we still sin because people do think that if we're just holy enough, we won't sin. Which of course isn't true. So I completely agree that there's no excuse and we should not declare to be sinners, but I get why he did what he did. He was making a point to a very special argument. Hope that makes sense ❤

I don’t see any conflicts between your view and Dallas’ view at all. I had to go back and re watched his video and yours a few more times to have a better understanding of what two of you are delivering, and I believe that he was purely addressing to those who thinks that Anyone who gave their lives to Christ will never sin again. He used Paul, Moses, David and even himself as example to say that we will fail, we wouldn’t have a need for Christ if mankind can have victory over sins. I’m the video even he said that he struggles with pornography and did fell back to it, but he REPENTED! That’s the key word, he Repented. So in no way he hinted that we should just accept that we will still sin and change nothing.
And at 2:42 of his video (you guys clipped that too), he mentioned something about how he disagreed with the “oh I gave myself to God and everything will be ok” mindset. I think this was the answer to one of your point about how we still need to try to live a holy life with God, as a response to Gods perfect and overwhelming love to us.
So I don’t really see any conflicts necessarily, maybe I could have still gotten your intention wrong, and you guys were just being cautious about what Dallas has said and how that can bring confusion to others. And that brings me to my last point that it’s hard to give a perfect response, it’s hard to elaborate and include all the points and they will have to reinforce and explain the other points. So Yeah give him grace for that. Again I believe it was just a short video purely to address the notion of believing that Christians will never backslide once Christ has made an impact in their lives.

I think that the Romans 7 reference is completely valid. Yes God hates sin, but conquering sin and personal iniquity is a battle that many new believers struggle with. We have all been baby Christians. Based on this time line she has been following for maybe 2 months, and I know so many baby Christians that don’t completely know how to say no to the flesh…and I can speak from experience. Also the Roman church were Christians, but Paul wrote this letter because they were weak in the spirit. That was the whole purpose of the letter.
I think that Dallas and the show portrays the realities of following Christ and the struggle of new believers and what happens when you don’t rely on scripture and Jesus to overcome temptation. She had all of the disciples and JESUS in her midsts and still chose the vise.

I'm glad you guys read scripture! Thank you for addressing that and not being afraid to talk about sin! I have been deeply concerned about the Chosen series. As a Christian, I would LOVE for a Biblical series. What Christian wouldn't? I would love to be in support of it, but Dallas has said that the show is only 5% Biblically accurate. 95% creative license. That really concerns me. Have we forgotten that these are REAL people? These are REAL stories, not fiction. And that EVERYTHING we need is in the Bible. The Bible warns us not to add to scripture. There is no evidence that Mary backslid. This is a completely man made theory. I also think it is a disservice to the real people. I am concerned that Dallas is more focused on making the Bible and it's people more "relatable" than sticking to the truth. Another concerning moment in the show was in the beginning of Season 1 Episode 5.
Right at the very beginning after the parents find Jesus..Joseph says to Jesus "What are you going to do for your mother from this transgression? " Jesus NEVER transgressed. I have seen comments on the show that it's making Jesus "more human" and "more relatable." I believe that we should not add sin to the people of the Bible's lives to make them more relatable to us. Instead, we should be INSPIRED by their lives that we too, can be faithful servants of the Lord. People can be saved and not turn back to their old ways. I would argue that Mary's life tells the story of a faithful servant, not a backslidden one. She experienced the Gospel firsthand. If God wanted Mary's life to tell that message, don't we believe it would be in the Bible? Other people's stories told that. I am concerned at this idea that we need to add to the Bible to get certain messages across. Scripture is very clear on not adding to the Bible.

Dallas did not say 5% biblically accurate. The parts of the show that are IN THE BIBLE they try to keep 100% bible, maybe those parts of these 2 seasons add up to 5% of the show and thats the confusion. And then the majority of the show is what is PLAUSIBLE of things that could have happened in 1st century near east to the followers (not just disciples, bible talks about Jesus having other followers with him too) of Jesus. The Bible can only tell us so much. (The perfect amount of so much. I fully believe in 100% accuracy of scripture as the word of God.) Having human backstories to people who just have a name and no stories is nice. BUT DO NOT GO AROUND TELLING PEOPLE ITS ONLY 5% BIBLICALLY ACCURATE. That is the vision of the show taken so far out of context that its just a lie. Watch the show. Heck if you just want to watch the scenes of what they took straight from the Bible just watch that, because they stick to the ‘script’ HARD. (Script....scripture....little pun). Dallas has reiterated many times he is not adding to scripture either. (As in ‘hey guys this REALLY happened.) If the show is not for you, totes understand, but the spreading of false info about the show is not cool. Joseph saying “transgression” to Jesus was a hint of humor, also saying you scared your mom (because he did, thats bible, making your mom worry is not sin) and Jesus telling his mom he is sorry is not an admission to sin. Another thing Dallas has addressed multiple times, he will NEVER make Jesus sin and believes Jesus was perfectly SINLESS. But when you listen to Hebrew/messianic scholars talk about these parts you can learn a lot about the Jewish culture and how sarcastic they can be when talking to their loved ones. Sorry I’m done ranting. I just hope you can read my words and see that 5/95 thing is misconstrued.

I agree with Dallas and want to caution you against a very pious very on sin that makes Christians question their assurance of salvation. Dallas is right that Jesus died knowing full well we would sin again. Yes the Christians life should be sanctified and you should see triumph over sin, all in the Spirits power. But I think Dallas is absolutely right to say we are still gonna sin, and it’s actually helpful to portray Mary backsliding to show sanctification isn’t linear but has a lot of ups and downs. The only time we will truly be free from sin and it’s affects is when Jesus Christ returns and we long for that day

I have an issue with Mary backsliding because it is not written in scripture. If they created another character backsliding than it wouldn't be an issue for me, but they taking a very real person who lived and is recorded in scripture and assuming things that should not be assumed. I also believe people do not truly understand what backsliding actually is. It's not merely struggling with former sin patterns and habits rather it is completely turning away from the Lord and abandoning your relationship with Him to an extent. Backsliding is being used quite inappropriately. None of the apostles were purported to have backslided. Paul struggled just as we all do, like when he called the high Priest a white washed tomb, stating he should slap him, but repented upon learning he was speaking to the high Priest this way.
I also do appreciate him creating human Christian's that struggle with sin patterns and old habits; that aren't perfect. I definitely love that, but my issue is completely disregarding an actual human being who lived and this could be sort of slander.
I also believe it can be hypocritical as if it is alright to assume things regarding certain characters in the Bible, than how could we call out progressives for assuming things regarding Paul or even Jesus? To me it's dangerous, but I still call Dallas a brother!

How can people even say that tho? Everyone falls short of the glory of God, Why wouldn’t the deciples and Mary? They weren’t perfect! The whole point of this series is to be relatable to show how we can relate to Jesus, Mary, Mary Magdalene and the deciples. Just because they actually walked with Jesus doesn’t mean they didn’t have doubts or struggles. I mean we walk with Jesus too we have the Holy Spirit something they didn’t have yet. Just think about that, And look at how we struggle with our flesh all the time! People don’t really think sometime! God bless Dallas for speaking up! I pray this series grows and flourishes even more in Christ! 🙌❤️ but I get what y’all are saying he should of elaborated more on what Paul was saying.

Hey P&M! I've stumbled across your channel since I'm a chosen fan as well. You guys have good points and I love how you challenge others not just go by what you or Dallas is saying but to study the word and pray for truth. Dallas has a huge weight on his shoulders on understanding all religions like Catholic, born again, and even Jewish customs before Jesus. Either way we believe "truth" is what we all need to pray and gain. Jesus said to Mary "go and sin no more". That is the truth we can't deny. That is more of a reason why this topic is hard. If we can't believe he healed her to perfection then we are not truely understand his miracles. I'm not going to deny that once we walk in faith that we are miraculous heal but isn't that what we should aim for. To be like Him without sin. That is why confession is important, which they show. Coming to him honestly with our struggles, and flaws asking for forgiveness and to help us not to sin no more. God bless you both. Keep asking and teaching the truth.

Yeah sins don’t change as times change because God defines sin. But “back in the day” it was rebellious or scandalous for women to uncover their hair. So the sin was using their body to communicate “I’m a rebellious and loose woman.” Today that same sin can be committed by wearing certain types of very immodest clothing but it’s no longer connected with exposing hair.

Great analysis! I have heard both of these perspectives on this subject and while I do believe we have to make an effort not to participate in sinful behavior, I also trust the Holy Spirit will convict us if we have the perspective of ‘well God will give me grace’ and do it anyways….which is what a lot of new believers do who are not rooted in, or are double minded as scripture speaks about. So you’re both right in your own perspectives, and I do lean more towards what you are saying about we need to make an effort to not fall into the temptation of sin. But we also have to realize that sanctification is a process. And the message he is sharing here I think is more about not allowing shame to have a stronghold on you when you do sin, which is a tactic the enemy can use if you are not yet equipped, as most new believers(and maturing) are not.
This topic always brings me back to the moments when Jesus uses the Word to escape from the enemies traps, one being when He was in the wilderness right after His baptism. I also see why it’s dangerous to have the perspective oh I’m a sinner but I believe so I am saved therefore I can keep sinning. But anyone who pursues a life with Jesus knows this type of double mindedness only causes despair and chaos in one’s life - insert the book of Jonah.
Either way I don’t think this scene should deter anyone from watching The Chosen. After all if we are only getting Biblical knowledge and perspective from media or even just the pulpit, we need to take a look at ourselves and relationship we have with Jesus. After all I can’t make my marriage work if I only depend on what I share on social media. There has to be an active engagement and pursuit for any relationship and intimacy. And we have intimacy with Jesus by reading the word, praying and fellowship with one another. Ok getting off point here! Either way good video!

I actually haven't watched the show yet, so I can't give an informed opinion on the show or the episode but what I can say is that we're all sinners, no one is perfect, no one is an angel and no one on this earth ever will be... even after a Jesus encounter people will struggle, slip up and sin, yes Christ can free us of our sins completely but there are a plethora of other sins that people can fall back to, temptations will always exist, the difference is acknowledging our sins, trying our absolute best to flee from it, resisting temptations, asking God for him to free us (again), repenting and asking God for his forgiveness if/when we fall back, and, most importantly, knowing that Christ died for our sins.
