I really enjoy how Divine Comedy went from "look at all those losers" to "please explain in 20 words or less about the paradoxical nature of time and the intrinsicate sense of superior will in mortal thinking"
I’m just a dumb idiot but I notice how new age spiritual people always turn to Christ eventually. Because the universal love they talk about has a name and a source and it’s God
Also, neat little detail about when Dante talks to Emperor Justinian, he introduces himself thus: "Caesar I was and am Justinian." I just love the way this shows that even the most important and powerful titles have passed away into insignificance in Heaven, because they don't matter compared to the fact that you are a Son or Daughter of God.
Idk if anyone else follows this belief but under my belief we actually have Celestial names so our names on Earth are simply for identification. Kinda weirdly poetic and interesting? I dunno it’s fascinating
When I was a kid my gramps once told me that God gives every soul its own unique name and the names that we are given during our birth are just labels that we use to identify eachother. I remember that all my childhood I always wondered what name God gave me haha
@@vxz9726 Huh. I never heard of that, exactly, but in Revelation it does mention that those who prevail in the Christian life will be given "a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it." Maybe that's where that comes from?
@@CantusTropus you’re right. And I’m sure that’s what he was referring to. Dante I mean, because (as a Christian myself) God would have named us since he is our father. We would have earthly names and heavenly names as well
I lived with an Italian dude in Barcelona for two years while studying philosophy. Him and I had a "Day of Dante," every third Sunday of the months. We'd drink wine, eat tapas and talk Dante. I think I learned more about literature and philosophy on those days. To David! Miss you buddy...every day. He'd call me Virgil on those days too. Good read.
I love the dichotomy of this channel. One week he’s explaining how the FBI killed MLK Jr., the next he’s getting choked up by the beauty of God’s love. Keep it up Mr. Goon!
@@jimbojimbo3801 bro what. Guy tried to use a 4 syllable word and failed. That's simply not the right word lol. Ofc some jerkoff on the internet is going to point that out. 🙋♂️
Reminder that this is the Medieval equivalent of hard scifi. Dante takes great pains to stick to what most scholars of the day considered the way the stars and planets worked mechanically.
It reads extremely well as sci-fi, particularly this last bit. It's great to see the roots of the genre in old writing. A bunch of stories in 1001 Arabian Nights also read a bit sci-fi (in particular the ones involving mechanical wonders like automatons that fly/talk etc.)
The significance of Virgil’s inability to guide Dante to Paradise is actually something I think is worth some focus. Dante thought of Virgil as the great philosopher and mind. He represents the faculties of reason and logic; and while these reasonable faculties can orient Dante towards Divinity, ultimately when the time comes they are not enough. Instead Beatrice, a beautiful maiden, Dante’s love carries him where all intellect fails.
@@Old_Harry7 yeah that's the reason why. The OC is a perfect example of how these stories have been extrapolated and twisted in various ways over the centuries, and now have people coming up with new more inaccurate comparisons. Because the OC hasn't actually read the books, they're going by these videos and have already forgotten that tidbit of information about Virgil and how baptism works in Dante's view. Wendigoon specified in this video about the beautiful maiden, but that information is not relevant to his idea. It's simply a way of saying ''as you level up in heaven you get more pretty''. That's it.
@@deletedaccount175 it's a bit of both, as said in the video the hierarchy is only a clever way to make the readers and humans in general understand how the heavens work or better what feeling they are supposed to convey therefore Beatrice getting prettier and prettier also ties in the scheme listed above. Dante was also a man of his times and a devoted chatolic one cannot simply take those elements a part from the Divine comedy.
@@deletedaccount175 Lol no I understand how baptism works in Dante's view, but that doesn't take from the literary significance of the symbolism employed.
Late to the party, but honestly, this series has inspired me to be less negative about the world around me. That was a brilliant telling of a classic. When you're on the internet for a long time it's very easy to sink into the comfort of nilihism and make everything a joke because you can understand and pick apart the aspects of any story. Towards the ending of purgatorio and paradiso your telling had me holding back tears. It was wonderful. I'm not even religious but I feel what Dante must have been feeling as he tries to answer life's questions and as I read in his attempts to explain them.
I love that Dante's Inferno is basically a story about a man who whilst seeing fantastical mind breaking shit his only burning question is "ay bro how's the war effort"
Then you've totally missed the point of the work. The war effort works on two levels: 1) Some people will think that it's a GOOD thing that Dante and the people in hell etc. are commenting on it. 2) Some people (usually modern day) will see it as RIDICULOUS that it keeps coming up. At the end of the story, Dante realises that the war effort matters for nothing. He doesn't mention it anymore. The ending teaches us that our worldly concerns will have no weight when we receive our enlightenment, and urges us to live that way now.
I'm using 1:10:05 - 1:10:52 for my wedding vows. His discription of his affection towards Beatrice is so pure and meaningfull... I can't discribe the feeling it gives me and I love it.
Thank you for posting this and congratulations! I had a similar thought; AMAZING how until now ... there were no words I could string together in a neat little couple of sentences to express the depth of my affection (& devotion, love for my SO.) It's AMAZING how one can so beautifully & eloquently describe what you feel when looking at or thinking about the person in your life that "owns" your heart forever. -PS. You are blessed to marry the person that you feel this way for, and likewise they are lucky to marry you. Y'all were meant to be. If married life ever gets boring or you catch yourself taking your mate for granted. Think of how many go their WHOLE lives never getting to marry (or spend the rest of their days with) the person they were truly meant for. Savor & appreciate every moment. Your post gave me some happy tears. ❤
@@your_dad_on_vacation May I provide a letter I have written to fit your engagement? I wrote it out of boredom but it came out too well not to share with you. “O Lady! Thou in whom my hopes have rest! Who, for my safety, hast not scorn’d, in hell to leave the traces of thy footsteps mark’d! For all mine eyes have seen, I, to thy power and goodness, virtue owe and grace. Of slave, thou hast to freedom brought me, and no means, for my deliverance apt, hast left untried. Thy liberal bounty still toward me keep. That, when my spirit, which thou madest whole, is loosen’d from this body, it may find favor with thee.” -Dante, in Dante’s Paradiso To you, who so perfectly fits my soul, to bond with, through life and what lies beyond it, I give unto you, these words of adoration. You have risen my spirit to new heights of joy and contentment. I stand humbled and intoxicated by your beauty, both in physical and spiritual natures. Before me stands you, a vessel of undying love, strength, and purity. My life with you, thus far, has been one of unbridled ecstasy. The only trial that stands between our infinite, graceful love, is a simple question, representing all which we have faced together, and the defeat of all obstacles who were so foolish to have found themselves in our way. Should you take my hand and lay your trust in me now, we shall be free to soar through the stars. So, my love, with this being said, this question is all that still remains; will you marry me?
I'll be honest seeing you tear up reading Dante's prayer made me tear up too. It's amazing how almost ridiculous Inferno is compared to this (it's still good though). I felt the emotion you felt and maybe even a little bit of how Dante felt writing this. Having been kicked out of Florence and now in this writing not only reaffirming his faith in God but also moving on, leaving that part of him behind. He goes through most of the trilogy asking about the fate of Florence, now giving it up as he realizes that the life he lives on earth will ultimately mean nothing compared to the life he will live in Heaven.
honestly thank you for this because as you said, people in the US are so used to dante's inferno and the depictions of hell. We hardly have anything to grasp as far as what heaven is like. As a christian i needed this video more than you know because i didn't even know dante's paradiso existed. I need to feel a sense of peace about the afterlife instead of stories of hell all the time that make me scared to die. Its good to have some form of understanding (whether its truly accurate or not) of heaven for once. I want to seek more knowledge of heaven it is very interesting.
I recommend the Bible project here on UA-cam! They’ve done several videos on theologically based theories on what heaven may be like. The rest of their content is great too.
i think the reason why inferno is more popular is because it's about hell. as we know, hell is this place of negativity, suffering and gnashing of teeth. And it evokes negative emotions. negative emotions are more powerful than positive emotions. This is gonna sound wild and off-topic, but that is why celebrity gossip and Internet drama is popular. they harbor negativity thus gaining a lot of attention
what an adventure. What started out as a religious fanfic, full of silliness and humor, turned into a deep, emotional and divine journey. Thank you so much for doing this story, it was an absolute pleasure start to finish
not a fanfiction. A fanfiction is when atheists gather around and produce abominations like evolution and then your edgelord of all Darwin doesnt even believe his own ideas and dies now thats what i call a betrayal!
@fck peace I mean, wouldn't you? But if I remember correctly, seeing Beatrice was the only thing he had in mind. Hell and purgatory were detour needed in order to be allowed in Heaven, where Beatrice is, and seeing God was a bonus
To us believers, it's not just a concept. It's the most awesome and radical thing to ever happen! A favorite qoute of mine is: "Humanities greatest moment was not when man walked on the moon, but when God walked the Earth!"
Acts 16:30-31 NLT - Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”
Hebrews 12:2 NLT - We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 NLT - Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it. It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you-unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place. I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
Statius: "Yay, more adventures!" Dante: "Eh? You were a Season 2 plot device mate, we're past that bit now" Statius: "Oh f-" *Statius vanishes in a puff of narrative irrelevance*
I'm not religious, so in the beginning I was like, hey fun story to watch during sewing. And now in the last video, I absolutely love it. This whole concept fascinates me and just this believe and creativity that went into these books, it really amazes me
I’m not religious anymore but I was raised to believe in god and this videos made me question whether I believe or not again, it was such an amazing experience I might read the book myself
Modern Catholicism gets a lot of bad press because it kinda did fall off. But Christianity itself is about love and redemption. I find many religions fascinating, I hope he makes a video for every major religion.
@@lorenzogarompolo8074 I felt the need to defend H.P. Lovecraft after reading this, then I realized I only like the stories in the cthulu mythos that he DIDNT write. so I think I agree?
I'm sorry for what I am about to say but you must have wretchedly poor taste to think that the trash written after Lovecraft's death is better than the originals written by him.
I know you meant the song by Haddaway but i can't help imagining the twice song instead. Dante, completely blind, lying on the floor and St. John dancing over him going "I wanna know 사탕처럼 달콤하다는데 I wanna know 하늘을 나는 것 같다는데 I wanna know, know, know, know What is love? 사랑이 어떤 느낌인지 I wanna know 하루 종일 웃고 있다는데 I wanna know 세상이 다 아름답다는데 I wanna know, know, know, know What is love? 언젠간 나에게도 사랑이 올까"
I would LOVE you going over Homer's work, Lovecraft, Paradise Lost, just any literature you find interesting! You go to such depths to make sure your audience follows along, and you are extremely entertaining! I definitely would love you making more videos on things you enjoy!
I wanna say having grown up in a christian household, in the bible belt, with a christian missionary as a step dad, in a predominantly christian nation, at no point in my entire life has anyone ever said anything about what's in heaven or why anyone would even want to go there. It is literally never spoken about. It's just a place "you need to want to go" but everyone is flabbergasted if you ask why or what's there or what it's like. No one seems to know. Or have any answers. It's wild. So thank you for this.
I had a similar experience. That compounded with other doubts pushed me towards agnosticism in my teens. I had to do my own searching and studying to return to some semblance of belief and faith. The more complex, and imo important, parts of Christianity just aren't discussed unless you have a really good pastor or preacher. It's kinda sad.
@@es0teric76 That's probably because it's really difficult to explain and understand these concepts, not to mention some people may not be satisfied with the answers they receive, so it's easier for many pastors and Christians to dance around these topics. Plus there's also the possibility that a Christian's understanding of any one of these topics is flawed or incomplete, which then places the burden upon them of potentially misinforming someone looking for answers. Ultimately, the best and safest thing you can do is do research for yourself and discuss what you find with someone who is developed in their faith. If you're used to prayer, it can be a powerful tool for understanding as well.
@@judsonhester1407 I totally get that, but I believe discussion is extremely important especially when considering difficult topics regarding one's faith. Discussing these topics with others of your own faith is underappreciated.
@@es0teric76 personally, I think its similar to life. You won't always be given an answer to a complicated question but you will be supplied with the tools and knowledge to acquire the answer. If that makes any sense. For example a discussion or a question I have always pondered is the never ending spiral of "God's plan." Why does God allow bad things? > Free will of the soul + the only way to show the difference between godly and evil. Why continue to allow bad things? > Humans are forgetful and again the emphasis of free will and the choice to do evil. If God is all knowing and his plan is to bring us closer to him would those who ignore him be considered a failure to God's plan? > They wouldn't be God's children. God didn't fail them. They failed God. Similar to raising and loving a sadistic child by providing appropriate disciplinary action, words of wisdom and guidance. In end the parents of said child did not fail the child but rather the child failed to honour his/her parents. Can't God just magically appear and do things like the Bible stated, in that way that would soldify his existence? > doing so would destroy the purpose of the bible and the concept of faith and believing. Perhaps because faith in God creates change in one's soul..? Which is the only way to impact one's soul and pull them towards God aside from God non-consentually removing their freewill. Which means one must give up their free will that was given by God and abused by Adam and Eve in order to complete/purify one's soul. I continue to find questions in which even I am amazed how I answer them. Like Hudson said above some people despite getting an answer are not content with it. They would like to change the answer. Edit: another big complex question I have is am I/are Christians doing God's work out of "genuine love" or is it because we fear hell? And if I fear hell and do work out of the fear of hell does that mean I do not love God but am selfishly only looking out for myself? I mean I wish I could be like Job in the Bible or Jesus. I think for me, the answer to my question would be through faith. I think I have it wrong with the way I'm assuming that every Christian loves God instanteously. But rather like Jesus' apostles they walk with God in concern of themselves only to truly love God along their practice.
The way I always understood it was that humans simply aren't capable of realizing what heaven is meant to be, it's something completely out of our understanding as EVERYTHING we think of is influenced by our current span of existence in this plane. So simply put, something like eternal bliss and happiness forever with God and every other soul. I guess..? If you think about it as nothing but a human and not a child of God it becomes a scary and dull idea pretty quick.
Your breakdown of this story - and more importantly YOUR take away emotionally and spiritually - has inspired my faith in a way I have not felt since I was a kid at Church. You inspired me so much that I have decided to Re-Read the Gospel and delve deeper into my understanding of faith. This is the type of content that NEEDS to exist. Thank you for what you made here.
I was raised as an atheist. My dad emphasized the idea that organized religion tends towards scams and rackets, and living in Utah, this ingenuine nature was plain to see in my experiences. In high school I experimented with several psychedelics after getting into marijuana which led me into multiple experiences in which I felt "spoken" to by being itself. Slowly but surely this has brought me a fascination with various religions' approach to the idea of a power most high. And I can't pretend that Wendigoon's Divine Comedy videos haven't brought me to understand why Christianity is the most commonly taken path to reach an understanding of the highest power.
@@jacobjonesofmagna honestly that’s one of my strongest reasons to believe there is a higher power of some sort. I dont know a single person who has tried psychedelics that isnt at least spiritual if not religious in some sense of the word. If we all come to a similar conclusion then odds are its at least close to the truth.
Dantes visualization of the trinity between god, jesus and the holy spirit is one of the most beautiful things that I've heard in my 24 years of life so far. made me tear up
I know, he's so awesome! When I first saw his videos and heard his story I was blown away by how far he's come in such little time! After watching him I decided I would finally take the leap and start my own youtube channel and like I said in my other comment Wendigoon was a huge Inspiration in doing that! He's just real, honest, and passionate... something I'd like to try to aspire to with my channel. Anyways much love- SLD
I've never seen someone be so intensive yet respectful with their faith. As an atheist, it's so cool seeing someone talk about the Divine Comedy as a faithful person.
As a person who was brought up in a extremely abusive Christian household were I would be beat if I didn’t want to go to church or pray I find it extremely refreshing to see a devote person such as you, how passionate you are and the love you feel towards your faith. Makes me smile every time. While I don’t see myself coming back to Christianity I’m glad there are people like you. Also sorry is this makes little sense, English is not my main language.
I do hope you come back to Christ. I certainly don't hate you, especially as someone who came from an abusive Jewish household I can understand why you lost your faith.
Your English is good don’t worry about it. Sorry you had such a poor experience with Christianity. I’d argue people like that are not true Christian’s.
I hope that you see how the love of Christ is what animates a man like Wendi to be so passionate. The abuse you faced was the evil of the world and not the love of Christ.
I'm really sorry about what you went through, I've seen first hand too many times how so-called "Christians" use God as an excuse to be abusive or otherwise vindictive to others.
@@tylersteward8917Clearly, you need some of that Inferno stuff if you dont felt grateful for Wendigoons narration. Beside,,its their money, why you cared ? 🤫

Ah finally, the end of the journey is here. Can't wait. Never had the chance to learn about Dante's Inferno in school, so i've been loving these videos. Everything you do is great man! Honestly the only content creator that I recommenced to my friends, and that they have come to love too. Keep up the good work!
Unless you went to a christian school, in which case these are literally fan fiction not real nor canon, you wouldnt because in US schools (assuming you are a US citizen, although I am sure most western and eastern schools unless specific Christian schools do not allow Christian talk) you are not taught Christian lore.
@@dravenocklost4253 oh yeah sure, but we still learn about history and stuff. Plenty of schools talk about it too. It’s just an interesting piece of literature too. Not like we don’t learn about Greek myth and Roman myth. Just a cool piece of Christian Fanfiction, that was published largely ya know. It’s cool.
I'm not a very religious person. My parents always have been, but because of my own experiences, I feel that I don't have a real place in the church. It doesn't feel comforting for me. So for the last 7 years or so, I've had little connection to the idea of religion as a whole. This series makes me crave that spiritual fulfillment. These videos spoke to me on a very intimate level, and I think that this for me marks the beginning of a journey towards the spiritual fulfillment I've been missing for so long. Thank you for this.
As someone who had a similar encounter, with falling from the church. And slowly creeping my way back to religion in general. I say keep pushing. I’m now studying at a college to become a youth pastor. It’s nothing like churches have told me over the years. A relationship with a God who loved you so much, He died (bodily) specifically so you could be with Him. While it’s cliche to hear for many, John 3:16 is shared so much for a reason. Go check it out. I went from a lust filled selfish life, to a man who is at his church every day for work and serving the Lord. Jesus loves you, all He wants is for you to do the same to Him :)

Same here, At the Mountains of Madness is possibly my favorite story ever and I'd love to hear his take on it, as well as some of his more out there stuff like The Shadow out of Time, which I found a bit hard to wrap my head around.
I feel like Dante gets a pass for all the self patting on the back he did in Inferno. He wrote this amazing stuff, almost as if he knew that his work would be revered and referenced in the future.
Make sense that his bad side gets shown a lot more in Inferno since walking through the whole entirety of hell would eventually show someones dark personality.
@@NevaehCyanide fair, it might not even be intentional on his part, but I feel it's like when someone cries, when your surrounded by hate or sadness, you start becoming hateful or sad, but when you're done and it's all out of your system, that's when you feel best and it's a good time to move on to better things (The most important part is how you let those feelings out though)
The weird thing is that even though the concepts and symbolism didn't affect me the way it got to wendigoon... I still teared up whenever he got moved to tears in this trilogy. Not because of the fact that he was being affected, but rather the fact that it meant so much to him, moving him to tears and it was just so beautiful in its own way. I don't really know how to explain it properly but the best way I can descibe it would be that the passion and beliefs he eminated was so beautiful that my own lack of faith and capability to see the world other than from a perspective of a form of nihilism made my existence seem more dull and cynical. As he found comfort and joy I grieved my existence as I at the same time felt so happy for him.
i know you were joking at the end by apologizing for those of us who have watched your videos to learn, but as someone who isnt religious but loves learning about theology, all your work is amazing. your heart is in every piece and it’s palpable throughout everything you say and do in your videos, and that genuine love is remarkable. thank you for all you do, and keep doing what you love because that is where real fulfillment will always lie.
I’d really love to hear wendigoon talk about lovecraftian stuff one day. It’s the kind of thing that keeps popping up to me but I never had the time or patience to go through the original works to actually be properly educated about it. And Shakespeare too. Old literature is really good at putting me to sleep.
I Loooovved Lovecraft's works, but it still takes me almost 3 days to read a short story because he structures his sentences weird + uses old language I have to look up + he can go on and on and on.... 😴 I recommend "Herbert West: Reanimator" to start with tbh
There is a film version of Lovecraft's Color out of Space that released a few years ago. Takes a lot of liberties with the story but it keeps the central idea and horror intact. Highly recommend
There in Italy, Dante's divine comedy is covered A LOT through out school years, which to be honest, fking sucks, because we had to memorize poems and stuff. But seeing it as a format in youtube, made me realize it's not actually that bad, thank you so much for covering all of th Divine Comedy.
Mah, dipende tutto dal tipo di professore che fa avvicinare all'argomento, se viene fatta fare a memoria effettivamente diventa impossibile da studiare senza annoiarsi nel tempo, se si incontra un professore appassionato diventa interessantissima
I seriously don't understand why so many professors stick to that moronic idea of having us memorize entire Canti, instead of just analizing them for their symbolism, or even just the style. I remember us not being able to go past Inferno, because of the prof getting so stuck into asking people to recite them, while we could have simply went on and read Purgatorio and Paradiso aswell. Super glad for Wendigoon's series, because i was always very curious of how they went, but i don't have the strength of will to read and understand them myself, with the original 1300s lexicon.
Same. I'm an atheist, but to me, the story transcends religion. It's about the inherent potential and good of human kind. I prefer this much over the stories of hell and purgatory. I love these stories about imagining the sheer beautiful potential of humanity.
@@Xuhtig looks like you have something personal against the Bible bud… this is your second comment I’ve seen after you tried to diss the Bible and it’s dissing the Divine Comedy… get some help.
I'm going to spoil the day and say that that's because he suggested that it was tearful and not because it was tearful. Humans are really social so, well.
I always thought of the church and it's teachings as boring and at one point in my life I was an atheist. But you have shown me how interesting everything church realted is an thus brought me closer to God than I have ever been. I really can't put into words how much this means to me. I just wanted to say thank you and keep doing what you do
I was just blessed with my first biological child. The part talking about how children who died too young to understand the concept of choice were blessed anyway really got to me. It strikes me as such a beautiful concept of children's innocence and God's love and wisdom.
As a christian myself, concepts like this really hit home in a way I never expect. Im at work as I'm listening to this, and I had to hide in the walk in fridge for a little bit because I couldnt stop crying. The symbolism and explanations of pure love and peace are some of the most beautiful pieces of literature I think ive ever listened to. And yes I'm still in the fridge right now. I'm still crying. Edit: for those wondering, no I am not still in the fridge 2 days later. And for the rest of you wondering, i work in a lab so we have a big fridge we can walk into to get stuff out of. It's big and really soundproofed (for some reason) so a lot of us go in there when we need to vent or calm down
🥺 How sweet to see Wendigoon get emotional! I’m Muslim but can still totally relate to the questions he has around faith and how comforting the end of Paradiso was to him
@fck peace if i recall correctly, its explained somewhere in the Fixed Stars section in this video that after Beatrice (or whoever she symbolises in Dante's life) passed away, he lost his way from God to some degree and essentially pursued the wrong meaning. Beatrice went to God to get permission to send Dante on this journey so that he may once again understand how to find his way in life. The story then begins in Inferno with Dante and Virgil at the entrance to Hell, marking the beginning of Dante's progression through the afterlife to understand life and existence
I think hearing wendigoon's breakdown of the divine comedy has made me reconsider my faith. I have strayed from God for a long time, but watching him breakdown during purgitorio and hearing Paradiso I think it's time to pray. God be wild for this one.
I'd also recommend Jordan Peterson's Exodus. He and his group keep politics 99% out of it (and talk unbiasedly when talking about politics, just observations they've made), and it's mostly a reading and breakdown of the Book of Exodus. It's free on youtube for a few more weeks (check the description of the first episode).
I’ve said this a lot during inferno and purgatory. But there’s just so theology in the parts that makes so much sense if you’re a Christian. There’s parts where you’re hardcore saying it’s true and it’s just amazing. Dante put in so much work into this
As someone who isn't religious but does believe in God, I'm glad you explained it all so thoroughly. I wouldn't have understood it if I read it on my own.
The meme at the end had me on the floor making me forget all of my memories, too. What a great trilogy of videos. I'd love to see some Shakespeare analysis if you were willing
Its a testament to Wendi's charisma (and I guess Dante's narrative) that he can relay to someone like me, an atheist, the emotions and themes and everything about a work all about religion, and get so invested and emotional over it that it not only makes me care, but "get" and empathize with all the good and hopeful things that come from people that do believe. Kinda wholesome not gonna lie.
He's just so friggin wholesome I wanna hug him and tell him it's all gonna be ok and he's a better person than he thinks he is (his psychopathy test video was so endearing). It's for people like him that I wish Heaven does exist. I'm fine with fading out of existence, but I hope he gets what he wishes for.
It’s so nice to see people genuinely enjoying and being moved by classic literature. Sometimes they are painted as subjects only to be studied in academy but have lost their ability to connect with people today. However your series is so filled with passionand fun (and very informative as well). Thank you!
I'm a non-christian (still am) from a different culture. I was saved by a Christian company as they gave me purpose when I was at my lowest. Thogh even then, when they tried to introduce me to Christ, I feel immense difficulty. But through going through your talks and especially this series, I feel closer to god and desire to seek.
I never had any idea that Dante’s Inferno ended with a third section in such beauty. There are so many cool concepts, and I genuinely hope that Dante found the paradise that he had so much faith in.
Definitely not me crying because this perfectly encompasses my belief in heaven and God's love for us. Thank you so much for making this! I have never read or heard an analysis about The Paradiso. It's so moving that somebody hundreds of years ago had the same ideas about God that I hold today. Ideas of compassion and love that transcends the test of time.
1:01:09 I actually had a dream about this years ago. Where everything including the skies, clouds, and just everything turned red and everyone was paralyzed and there was screaming that sounded like it was coming from everywhere and there were constant roars of thunder, then I rose into the clouds and it was almost all white but there were these cardboard cutout angels on each level. But I kept going through doors of like levels of heaven or some sort. These doors had the cross on it and it was two large doors that opened out. I think it was about 7 or 9 doors but once I was at the top there were relatives and people that I haven't seen before.
My uncle had a similar experience when he died and came back on the operating table during heart surgery. He saw lots of people he didn't recognize but they felt happy and welcoming, but also some relatives and had a conversation with his deceased mother. He said he is glad to be back among the living but wouldn't mind going back to wherever that was. That conversation was so heavy it almost makes me tear up thinking about it
The ending honestly creeped me out slightly, because of an experience I had once years ago. I was discussing these sorts of things with a friend, and I described what I imagine Existence/God looks like: Imagine an extremely strong, tie-dye stress ball inside of a net. I described the idea of colors spilling out and back, looping on themselves', growing and receding. I've never heard someone with a similar picture.
I know God is incomprehensible (He says multiple times that you'd disintegrate if you gazed upon His face), but it's so fascinating to imagine what the Three-In-One would look like with all His power, omnipotence, and holiness, but at the same time, knowing that he looks exactly like us--Human I think Dante did a pretty good job with his own description
As an athiest, I just want to thank you for being someone who can discuss religious content in a way that is for everyone. You are able to talk about your faith and what you believe in such a way that allows us (or me at least) to see your awe/joy/reverence/mind being blown without the undertone that anyone who does not believe as you do is and idiot/going to hell/ etc; which is very rare in discussions of religious content. You're not trying to sway anyone's thoughts or beliefs, just sharing things you think are cool in the most unbias manner (despite you finding it cool), and that's really refreshing and greatly appreciated. I can only hope to find youtubers that discuss other religions they are apart of in the same way you do. I'd love to learn more about Islam, Judaism, Hindu, and other religions in the same way you present Christianity that is engaging, entertaining, and informative without being proselytizing.
As a young man who was astray from my faith, your videos have done more for me than any sermon or Sunday school ever could, seeing a man talking about and breaking down Catholic philosophy in an interesting manner, and even getting emotional at parts has kept me roped in and really helped re-ignite my faith and my search for knowlege.
This was an incredible series. I've attempted to read the Divine Comedy a few times many years ago, but I had only managed to reach Purgatorio. As I further climbed up the mountain I get exhausted because the concepts that Dante describes became more and more abstract. Inferno was able to tell its nature by the poetically violent depictions of how the sinners got their punishment, and I was captivated: how much worse (in the good sense) is the next level? It was a burning spectacle, a feast for the eathly mind. Climbing up the purgatory mountain and entering the spheres of heaven - it becomes less concrete and more abstract. Maybe because I had a vague understanding on how Christian atonement is understood I got bored and less interested to read the Divine Comedy till the end. But watching you on how you got emotionally touched by the many passages in the Purgatorio and Paradiso part I got my motiviation to finally complete it. Please keep the good work.
Hey Wendigoon, id just like to comend you as a fellow Christian that watches your videos. You’re very humbled and you downplay your work at the end of your videos but there really is no one like you out there. I live in a very non-church going area and i sometimes miss church out of my own negligence. You’re videos are very helpful to me in supporting my relationship with God and I feel closer to him when i watch your videos. Your steadfast character gives me the whole support of what an entire church would. In a world of so much confusion and temptation for christians, i look to you as a steadfast example of what a proper man and Christian should be like. I am certain that God looks upon you quite favorably. Thank you for your content and please do keep up the good work. -Gabe

Again, I'm not religious to any extent, I think everyone has their own view of the world around them and divinity. This is why I don't label myself one way or another. I read The Divine Comedy already, years ago, but hearing it broken down was really enjoyable. I found this series so engaging and I really appreciate how you've broken this stuff down and how you don't rush out content. Thank you so much for all your hard work!

While Dante is busy grappling with his current existential reality harder than Jacob's holy ladder match, John comes in with a flashbang to Dante's face and starts singing "what is love" by Haddaway while Dante is writhing on the floor saying "I nearly shit my pants on Saturn, now this?"

I mean, he's technically correct about the moon and the dark spots. The light in the craters is, in fact, shining differently than the light reflecting from the surface. It's shining different because of shadows and why Dante didn't think that maybe shadows could exist on the moon, idk, but he wasn't entirely wrong.

I read it as an adult, it was one of the hardest book I ever read, but it gets easier once you get used to the poetic style. It's like an epic fantasy tale before the genre existed.
started reading the divine comedy because of these videos. found out that dante doesn’t go more into detail than this, he just writes more ✨poetically✨ so if you wanna just know about how dante described the realms, this is sufficient and comprehensive. well done
As someone who’s been going to church since I was 7 but then faced religious trauma due to religious leaders in different churches I’ve been abusing their power to hurt me and severed my relationship with God due to being traumatized so horribly I’m terrified of going back on the path… these videos left me with longing, sadness and wonder of what to do and if god will forgive me for being harmed in the places meant for worship. Thank you again and I weep with pain and hope.
If you're religious and you have a fear of the church, just know that your relationship with God is personal and you can worship in the comfort of your own home in private, there are plenty of UA-cam videos and websites that preach the teachings of God as well as the Bible
It isn't a sin to be hurt by someone else. You don't need to be forgiven for someone else hurting you, no matter where they did. What matters are your actions.
I'm agnostic, but I am certain that God would not put that blame on you. He'd put that blame on the ones who hurt you. If someone has to be punished, then it's the people who, out of their own will, decided to hurt you. If God is love, then he certainly would understand why you strayed away and why you're scared. And if God is forgiveness, he understands that you did not seek after that hurt and therefore has no reason to forgive you, because there is nothing to forgive. Pretty sure he'd welcome you to heaven with open arms.
I wish I could single-handedly like this video a hundred million times. Thanks for walking people through the Divine Comedy in a digestible and comforting way that personally awakened my own thought about Christianity and Divinity and is helping me think further about other things in my life. As an Italian I can tell you Dante is a very big deal here. He is considered the greatest Italian artist to have ever existed and we even have an obligatory high school subject that concerns only the study of Divina Commedia. His face is also on the Italian standard 2€ coin. From a plot point of view, yeah the Divina Commedia can feel very "fanfictiony", however it's its other characteristics that cementified its importance, and unfortunately those elements get all lost in translation. It's how this story was written that really sells it, there's symbolism even inside the way it's written. The words and letters and phrases are all divided in groups of Biblical numbers and they are paralled among all three parts of the Commedia, not to mention that with each passing verse the wording and allegories get much more elegant and eloquent to signifing the approaching to God and Paradise, with the first part of Paradiso that has so much crammed into it by a literary and allegoric point of view that it brings a person to tears. Between the "fanfiction" elements then, people often forget the real message behind this masterpiece. It's not only a cautionary tale about life and death, but it is also a heartfelt appeal against both political sides of the time and the terrible divide they have created (a sentiment that is current even today), while also being a personal story. It's not for vainglory that he chose Virgilio and Beatrice to led him, same for the choosing of the setting. Dante was at his lowest at the time, he felt betrayed by the political and ecclesiastical systems, he was exiled by his city/country in a time where patriotism was a big deal, he felt destroyed by the recent death of the love of his life Beatrice, he started questioning both his faith and his talent. This whole story is basically a big therapy session for Dante, and man it freaking rocked it in my opinion. So what I'm getting at is that maybe when Dante wrote the ancient poets lauding him, he wasn't bloating.
@@protonjones54 Yes, I did, because it's a message I want to be reached by those stumbling on one of these three videos, as Dante's work really gets misinterpreted in translation.
Im not religious but I find religion interesting and I feel that people can still learn and take stuff away from religion even if you don't follow any. ps I love your videos Wendigoon keep it up your doing great 👍.
I had a baptist upbringing, going to church every wednesday for youth group, and sunday with the family. Getting this entire rundown through Dante's Inferno as told by someone who is just as excited while still seeing it through a realistic lens, tickles every single one of my fancies. I cried at the end of Purgatorio too, with the same exact emotion fueling it. It really was one of the most poetic spiritual stories I've ever read, and the Greek mythology/biblical mash-up was everything I've ever wanted. I have a relationship with God as I know it, and hearing stories about things like God waiting for us in the garden of eden is so powerful. The thought that eventually we'll be free of the stresses we've placed on ourselves as long as we walk a selfless path with the intent of contributing to the greater good gives me a sense of hope that makes me emotional. I have chosen not to attend any church because of how I feel towards organized religion, but after reading and hearing this series from another person who read it makes me miss church. Thank you, Goon. Subscribed for sure.

Also, neat little detail about when Dante talks to Emperor Justinian, he introduces himself thus: "Caesar I was and am Justinian." Reminder that this is the Medieval equivalent of hard scifi. Dante takes great pains to stick to what most scholars of the day considered the way the stars and planets worked mechanically.
He also acknowledges that his portrayal is likely wrong but it doesn’t matter because it’s all just a portrayal made to fit his own understanding
Ty for appreciating my work, it means a lot
It’s goated
It reads extremely well as sci-fi, particularly this last bit. It's great to see the roots of the genre in old writing. A bunch of stories in 1001 Arabian Nights also read a bit sci-fi (in particular the ones involving mechanical wonders like automatons that fly/talk etc.)
I mean if he didn’t he’d probably be burned alive so there’s that
The significance of Virgil’s inability to guide Dante to Paradise is actually something I think is worth some focus.
Also Virgil wasn't baptized so he wouldn't be able to set foot in such heavenly place.

As a mentally ill Ukrainian, I fully agree
reminds me of one of those people who no matter what happens says "ya know, where I come from we have a saying..."
It’s more like “who is winning the election?”

YES! I was wondering when you would cover Paradiso, it makes all the years I spent studying the Divine Comedy worth something.
(Also the end killed me)
That's a bot, Greg. Ignore it.
What did you partake in that required you to study Divine Comedy? Sounds like a fun course.
@@doggtreet damn I think he was shitposting, ahahah.
Nothing special, in Italy is mandatory in any school you go in, you'll probably have to study it in multiple classes, like middle and then high school. Dante is a pretty big deal in the pizza land.
I would vastly prefer this over fucking Romeo and Juliet.
I feel scammed of a fun education.
@@doggtreet trust me, if you are forced to study Dante you are never gonna like it. But if, like this video, you ear someone talking with passion about it its a whole another thing.
@@doggtreet so true. Macbeth was pretty good though. Acting it out though. Not so much.
1:13:40 I’m a strong Catholic, born and raised. A few years ago, I had a sister who died only a few hours after she was born, so this part about the children joining in praise had me crying.
I cannot express how grateful I am to have found this channel. This is the only channel whose every video I watch from beginning to end in one sitting because I just can’t get enough of it. Keep up the good work!!
Gaaay
Me too (to the first sentence). I heard of this channel through Nux Taku, and when I looked through the videos tab, the Inferno video caught my eye. I'm so glad I found myself there, especially now that the recap is finished.
While Dante is busy grappling with his current existential reality harder than Jacob's holy ladder match, John comes in with a flashbang to Dante's face and starts singing "what is love" by Haddaway while Dante is writhing on the floor saying "I nearly shit my pants on Saturn, now this?"
I have literally no idea why but I'm imagining St. John breakdancing as he sings
@@galaxymew5138 Might be because you've been heavily exposed to the breakdancing cat meme, and now I have an image of a cat named Saint John owned by sweet elderly Christian woman in my head.
"Sing along or die alone fucko" -John
I love this so much! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
@@danielhuelsman76 i cant imagine anything other than a hot guy with a shit eating grin on his face tearing up the dance floor
Thank you for your wonderfully open and honest and joyful podcast. I was so impressed by your modesty, vibrancy and openness. Il Paradiso was a late discovery. Your podcasts are really helpful in their mixture of engaged rigour, textual tenacity and yet lack of pomposity. You SHARE your knowledge and self-reflective lack of knowledge. It has been a pleasure to benefit from your podcast.
I mean, he's technically correct about the moon and the dark spots. The light in the craters is, in fact, shining differently than the light reflecting from the surface. It's shining different because of shadows and why Dante didn't think that maybe shadows could exist on the moon, idk, but he wasn't entirely wrong.
Surprisingly accurate considering the time
Homer's Odyssey was an amazing read. It took half a semester in high school to finish but it was mind altering from a philosophical stand point. I love you videos and can't wait to so an Iliad thumbnail pop up in my subs
I read it as an adult, it was one of the hardest book I ever read, but it gets easier once you get used to the poetic style. It's like an epic fantasy tale before the genre existed.
I'm so glad you're covering the whole story and not just Inferno like 99% of creators do. Good job dad
started reading the divine comedy because of these videos. found out that dante doesn’t go more into detail than this, he just writes more ✨poetically✨ so if you wanna just know about how dante described the realms, this is sufficient and comprehensive.
@@mystery785 not in every religion
religiousness as an adult can be a really different experience. but you should try therapy before just to be sure. or concurrently
I wish I could single-handedly like this video a hundred million times. Thanks for walking people through the Divine Comedy in a digestible and comforting way that personally awakened my own thought about Christianity and Divinity and is helping me think further about other things in my life. God bless you
I gotta say, I'm not a religious person. But I've been looking forward to this for ages to see how you would explain it and how you feel about. Must admit, the emotional bit for you got me teary eyed. Well done, sir, well done.
Every time I’m struggling I watch this and it really restores my soul and faith.
put all my friends onto you through this series. you essentially the no-fear shakespeare of older writings, you make the concepts MUCH easier to grasp and visualize everything much better through modern language. love you !
Please we need another Sunday teaching!!! You said if you ever stopped then there was a problem, so we need reassurance!
You copy/pasted this comment on all 3 of the Dante videos, didn't you
@@protonjones54
Yes, I did, because it's a message I want to be reached by those stumbling on one of these three videos, as Dante's work really gets misinterpreted in translation.

"Nice argument. Unforunately I've written a book where I'm in heaven and you're in hell"

When you said that it for some reason made me incredibly emotional.
Great video by the way :)
Same here. I think in those words there is a truth that is known to the heart of man. Jesus is our savior.
Im not religious but I find religion interesting and I feel that people can still learn and take stuff away from religion even if you don't follow any. ps I love your videos Wendigoon keep it up your doing great 👍.

The Narnia books are pretty biblical so a vid of those would be cool. Also watching this whole 3 part series was an absolute blast
Check out Into the Wardrobe. He does a great job talking about it.
I loved the movie versions!!! It sucks that they never were fully adapted correctly
@@abbie_joan I'd love it if they actually made the entire book series into a series of movies or a TV series and adapted them correctly.
Subscribed for sure.
gustave doré’s illustrations of dante’s divine comedy have been making me feral throughout this whole series
edit: PLEASE do more literature related content! I’d love for you to cover Paradise Lost and some of Lovecrafts works!
I'd love to hear you talk about the count of St Germain. His story is full of Christianity, alchemy, kings, queens, and a tie in to modern pop culture in "Castlevania".
That ending was so beautiful, the words about love and grace were beautiful. Being a Christian myself and somewhat knowing about grace, this was absolutely amazing. I didn't even know the two other books existed. God bless man, doing a great job of making these videos ♥️
