    To me, the most haunting thing from Paradise Lost that still disturbs me to this day is the imagery of Sin. Something I was hoping you’d bring up in your analysis of her character is that she is constantly giving birth to these canine monsters who, themselves, copulate with her to produce more and more of themselves in an eternally incestuous cycle. When I first read this, I felt it was meant to represent that the mind often falls in love with its own creations, “ideas”, and unless these ideas are presented to the wider world for scrutiny and discourse, then the idea will fall in love with itself and often spawn even more ideas solely off from its own imagined merits, but with each subsequent new idea becoming even more flawed and degenerated than the last. It’s a disturbing allegory of how bad ideas that are never brought to the light of day will fester and multiply unto themselves until nothing else can be done about it. What starts as a thought of pure beauty can, over time, degenerate into an overflowing cesspool of madness if you aren’t careful.

      That's a horrifying revelation, and even if its in a biblical sense here, I can definitely see this being very familiar to the modern world from... certain political stances to something that hits closer to home for me, being an artist and writer and not taking some time to get feedback for the ideas that I make for my own works.

    I can't help but think of the Mark Twain quote, which I'll paraphrase as "But who prays for the Devil? Who in hundreds or thousands of years has had the common humanity and compassion to pray for the one sinner who needed it most?" when hearing how Lucifer considered asking for forgiveness before dismissing the idea. Twain's quote has always struck me as rather profound, but Milton's suggestion that Lucifer doesn't WANT forgiveness, and it's confliction with Twain sort of reminded me that that's just the nature of Satan: he is irredeemable, not because his sins were too great, but because he doesn't WANT to be redeemed. And somehow that's even more profound, thinking that if only seeing Eden and considering asking forgiveness had gone another way, it's a whole other way that humanity would never have been cast from paradise. I grew up Christian but in honesty since growing up and learning more about all sorts of religions I'm not sure what I choose to believe in, but it's still an interesting story and very thought provoking to see how many things had to go wrong for the fall of humanity to happen, and yet it happened all the same, as if it was fate.

    • @gaarxeriss9692

      so you read Twain's quote and that influenced you, then you read Milton's quote, and that influenced you in the other direction? Sounds like you're just easily swayed and can't actually make up your mind, more than you realizing "the true nature" of satan

    • @figarden1
      @figarden1 Місяць тому +3

      It is what differentiates us from the angels. We both are capable of free will, however, they exist in black and white and we exist in a grey area. They KNOW the difference between right and wrong no matter how slight or subtle. Man can be LEAD into or become victims of temptation, however, for an angel to sin, it is an intentional act and directly is in opposition to the Lord. It honestly adds an even greater layer because he may actually want redemption, but understands it can never be possible and thus, relents and continues.

    • @lykonic1763
      @lykonic1763 Місяць тому +3

      @@figarden1 I wonder though, IS redemption and forgiveness for a fallen angel - or anyone else who chose to commit a sin - truly impossible? Who is to say that if Lucifer *did* go to God and ask for forgiveness for what he's done, that in his infinite compassion God wouldn't grant him that forgiveness? If, despite the fact that he exists purely in black and white morality, Lucifer did this, I personally find it hard to believe that God wouldn't forgive him - he's supposed to be the epitome of all things good, with wisdom and understanding beyond mortal comprehension. For humans, we need only admit our sins, try to move on from them and improve, and let him into our lives to earn forgiveness. So despite the fact we've never seen a fallen angel actually ask for forgiveness, I would have to believe that God would grant it, if they were genuine in their regret and willingness to return to the light. But then again, I'm not exactly an expert on religion of any kind, and don't know what I personally choose to believe still, so maybe my interpretations and hypotheticals just don't really align with Christianity as a whole. I just think as far as Paradise Lost goes, it's more of a hard-hitting message that Lucifer wants forgiveness, but out of pride or envy or wrath or what have you, refuses to ask for it. Which just reminds me of the Twain quote in my original comment, because who needs prayer more than a sinner who doesn't believe they can be, or are even worthy of being, redeemed?

    • @SineN0mine3
      @SineN0mine3 4 місяці тому

      I have to wonder if that particular interpretation was actually invented by satanists. I doubt any genuine scholar would seriously believe that in his time that the author would take such a massive risk. Unless your audience is already comfortable with the idea of Satan being a role model I don't think most people would reach that conclusion without some help.
      It's already difficult for audiences to understand the nuances of satire; basing your argument on the premise of people's entire world view and cosmic belief would not have made for a very popular story, nor an effective satire.
      Satan is the archetypal villain, by including him in your satire you're basically telling your audience "don't be fooled by this character's charm, they're the literal embodiment of evil as you know it".
      There's probably many different ways to interpret a text like this especially when so much of the context is lost or obscured by the sands of time.
      I even think it's valid to interpret the text with Satan as the anti-hero so long as you admit that wasn't the point that the author was making.
      I would expect that most people who say that they think that's the point haven't read the story or even had it explained to them properly, they're just repeating an interesting or controversial seeming opinions because they expect it will get a reaction.

    • @themightymcb7310

      @@kenzboardA supposedly benevolent and wise dictator is still a dictator. God is claiming to be omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omnipowerful. However, these three things contradict each other at a fundamental level.
      Omnipotence means he has all knowledge of what has happened, is happening, and will happen. He knows who will make what choices and how it will all end up. This essentially forces you to accept predeterminism, the idea that free will does not truly exist and God had it all planned from the jump. This works well with the idea of God being all powerful, as it gives him control over basically everything down to the finest detail, but it directly contradicts the idea that God is purely benevolent because he essentially made us the way we are. He designed Satan in such a way that he would never be satisfied with the current order of things, dooming him to fail from the very moment of creation. He created hell and then created sinners to populate it. He orchestrated every act of evil. He knows it will happen because he chose for it to happen. This is not benevolent behavior.
      So say you aren't a Calvinist then, you believe in free will. That necessarily means that God is either not omnipotent or not omnipowerful-he either cannot see the future or is powerless to control it. This leaves him available to be 100% pure and good, since he has no ability to control evil, but it either strips him of his power or foresight.
      Christians have been attempting to square this particular circle for literal centuries.

    • @MrBarfingRainbows
      @MrBarfingRainbows Місяць тому +5

      Well, if you actually look at Milton's God, holistically, he does look a bit strange for a supposed, "all loving, benevolent" God.
      In the poem, God actually, very briefly, gives his reason for everything he's doing. He specifically says, this creation, the fall of Man and their eventual redemption, is "so shall my glory excel." This video is kinda fine, Wendigoon actually misses/misinterprets some details of the poem (ex. the poem, while it does praise Eve, actually repeatedly says God made woman is lesser than Man, and it is suggested that she is even less intelligent); and there is a reason why some academics view God as being tyrannical, and it's not just because "everyone is stupid" (lol?), it's partly because Milton's God actually demonstrates some extremely questionable traits. He openly mocks and laughs at the rebel angels in derision when they first plan their revolt (all kind and all good?), and when Adam asks Raphael on the nature of the universe, he doesn't actually explain everything, and says that not everything should or could be known to man---God "laughs" at man trying to understand his creation.
      Satan also doesn't actually transform into a serpent in this poem, but possesses the body of one against its will. In Heaven, God says he won't punish the serpent for tempting Eve, since it was Satan's Sin---Satan took control of the snake, but when God (as the Son) arrives in Eden, he punishes all serpents anyway, for an action that was made against their own will. God also basically punishes all of his earthly creations (the entire animal kingdoms) for Adam and Eve's Sin too (again, for something that wasn't the animal's fault)--all of Paradise falls to disarray, Death comes, and animals are forced to kill each other for survival.
      If you're not actually religious and don't have a (unintentionally biased) connection to Christian belief--Satan still certainly isn't a good character (but not completely evil, as Wendigoon does cover), since he's motivated by jealousy and hatred, but he gains praise from some scholars for his unrelenting conviction against an irreconcilable, unconquerable force of oppression. Wendigoon missed this part of the poem, or at least failed to mention (or at least I didn't hear him mention it): Mankind in the poem, was created to replace the rebel angels who fell, and they would eventually ascend to join God in Heaven. This would occur however, if they only obeyed--their true purpose, was to obey God. God's reasons in the poem, are basically: obey me, for my glory.
      Which is also part of the tragedy of the poem (and why some people view this God as being a tyrant), even if we accept that God is completely good (by accepting his word, and the word of his angels who are subservient to him), he doesn't give enough reason or evidence to the angels or man to fully believe that. Satan even says, if he knew how powerful God was (and also, implying if he knew the circumstances of his birth), he would never have betrayed God, since he wouldn't have reason to doubt him. Milton's God purposely keeps knowledge from man and the angels, and wants them to blindly obey him, for his glory. Any unbiased reader could rightly see this God as being questionable.
      Milton's God basically invented a scenario that will cause suffering and death, and of course, since he is omniscient, he knew this anyway. It basically boils down to: obey me, or suffer (but God knew this anyway, so he purposely created a universe where people/angels wouldn't obey him, and he could cause them suffering).
      (Edited for spelling.)

      @@MrBarfingRainbows I do not want to write a full essay in response, but there are numerous examples of "tyranny" like God mocking the rebellious angels and such that are not necessarily contradictory to his all-loving nature. The thing about the fall of man so his "glory shall excel" is a kind of Calvinist theological concept, so I wouldn't say tyrannical. Also, why shouldn't we live for and worship a being perfect and infinitely greater than us? That's all I have time for now, but I do have one more question. Are you an atheist, or religious at all?

When people read this and say "he kinda has a point" that is EXACTLY the point! Because people don't simply bow down before someone to make them king because they say so, they make someone king who promises all riches and reward in return, who preys on their own pride and beliefs and says "I can give you what you are being deprived of". No doubt though he would have said anything he thought would turn the most angels to his cause, so he very well may have lied, but to his audience, the angels of whom he wanted loyalty, he had to make a very convincing argument so that they would see his as a just cause and rebel against their Lord God. It's also the fact that Adam started constantly blaming her since then broke me even more. I think it were those moments that made Eve realize just how big of a mistake she made, since Adam's right - He bared her sin with her just because of her own selfish idea to have Adam all by herself instead of letting him have another Eve (and I'm not saying this as a bad thing, after all Adam was being selfish too by disregarding the consequences just to be with Eve) and now he has to suffer for her sake too. That amount of guilt is probably what made Eve break down first.

Seeing Isaiah cry had me realizing that I, myself was also holding back tears. Especially after hearing of Adam and Eve's love and desire for each. Due to some recent and past events I have been struggling on the very question of what love is, that if it even exist, if I deserve it, and will I ever to be able to experience such depth from someone. This story definitely touched me and especially seeing and going through the emotion's with you has brought me a moment I did not expect to encounter along with how much it played into my day. First of all, what stood out to me the most was how Adam talked/viewed Eve, it’s so sweet and the way he talks about her is beautiful. I also found it interesting the emotions satan felt when seeing Eden. Because I feel like he really wanted to be apart of that but his drive and hatred of god is what he ultimately stayed with. Not to defend him or anything, but it’s an interesting take on him. This story is so beautiful at the end when even though they know what humanity is to become and what they are going to do, we are ultimately connected through our faith to god and hope.
    I love this story, can’t wait to listen to Dante’s inferno next !

I have thoroughly enjoyed your 3 videos about the Divine Comedy from start to finish as well as this one. Don't hold back your emotions because it might be "cringe", they add a lot of beauty to the way you convey how wonderful the events happening to these characters are. Your emotional reactions make me wish I too could believe. But I don't, and I can't, I've tried. It made me feel like a hypocrite, believing some parts but not others. • @jonathandoe1367
      @jonathandoe1367 6 місяців тому

      Well, if you'd like to believe, I can point you to some resources. If you're unsure about whether or not Christianity is factually *true*, there are plenty of videos by Cold-Case Christianity and Testify that delve into the historical evidence for the Resurrection and other Biblical events, not to mention a few great ones by Mike Winger and InspiringPhilosophy on the same subject. Atheists love to give the impression that there's no evidence for Christianity, but it's far from the truth. In fact, once you have all the information, I don't think reasonable doubt remains a possibility.
      If you're not sure about some points of Christian theology, or what the Bible's really about, then there are channels for that too. BibleProject walks you through the whole Bible with short videos connecting the themes of Scripture in an accessible way while providing the Ancient Jewish context of Christianity that was lost along the way. It's less confusing when you have all the context, believe me.
      If there's a particular doctrine you take moral issue with, then it might be an problem with the denomination you're familiar with, or Christianity was explained to you poorly. For example, only a few denominations believe that we are guilty of of Adam's sin, and that doctrine traces its roots back to a misunderstanding with St Augustine that eventually morphed into Medieval Catholicism. Another common one is that the Atonement is often caricatured as a bloodthirsty god requiring human sacrifice, but that's never been good exegesis. I really do believe in the Orthodox Church, but many in the West have sadly forgotten them. Channels like Theoria, Y2AM, David Ehran, and Jay Dyer try to explain Orthodox theology to a Western audience, but it can be a little complicated at times.
      For me, I had the opposite problem. I didn't want to Christianity to be true, but I couldn't see any way around it. You have thousands upon thousands of Roman citizens willing to be publicly tortured to death for their belief that a crucified Jewish carpenter rose from the dead and is the One True God. It would take alot of explaining away for that to be some kind of mere coincidence. No, I knew Christianity was true; I just didn't like it. But it started growing on me, and now I attend Lutheran mass weekly.
      Who knows, maybe you'll like it too? There's no commitment to showing up. I would recommend a congregation with good theology and a solid liturgy, so that includes pretty much just Lutheran Missouri Synod and Eastern Orthodox. Unless you would insist on Evangelicalism; then I would recommend Calvary Chapel or a good Messianic synagogue. As long as it's in your area, of course. I can't guarantee it'll make a difference, but it did for me. And you'll never know if you don't try.
      Hope I've been of some use to you. I would be happy to answer any further questions. Salve! :)

    You're completely right about people misunderstanding this book as just E-boy Satan, and I'm extremely happy you covered it. I bought it a few years ago and just couldn't get into it sadly, so I watched some other UA-camr cover it and they painted the plot so terribly compared to you. It was such a basic run down and pretty much laid out what you said most people interpret the book. They just focus on the whole sympathy for the Devil aspect which isn't there and don't even mention the real meat of the discussions between Adam, Eve, and the Archangel Raphael, the fall of man with Adam's pure undying devotion to Eve, and the intrigue Adam had. I found it so interesting that in the book Raphael said it's okay to ask questions and be inquisitive. I went to a Catholic school from grades 1-11 and it always seemed like if you asked questions, you were questioning God's plan and activity going against him, and it's like no, just curious.
    Great video like all your others, but I think this one is just a bit better. Maybe it's that personal touch you have with Christianity.

      I remember growing up having the same problem when I would ask questions that I just genuinely wondered in my young mind, my parents or pastors or other church members would often say something along the lines of “because that’s God’s plan” or “you may understand when you are older” or just basically giving me the run around kind of implying that these questions I ask are unnecessary and to let it go. I have question everything tattooed on me and I am no longer Christian or religious for that matter and one of the many reasons for me losing faith was that sort of thing.
