No Longer Vegan....

  • I never expected to make this video when I went vegan almost a decade ago (March 2014), but a lot has shifted for me in the last year, and this video opens up about why we no longer will be adhering to a strict vegan lifestyle.
My biggest change is that I started craving animal products after giving birth to our son, Max. I never had this feeling during my pregnancy, but about six months postpartum, my body kept telling me to eat eggs. I thought at first I would be able to adjust my supplements/the food I was eating to fix whatever hole in my diet was creating this craving. I upped my fat and protein intake. I ate tons of chia/flax/hemp seeds for omegas. I supplement with b12, vegan Dha, choline, and vitamin d.... I eat tons of calories. I came at my vegan diet from a place of preparation and a lot of personal education, but no matter what I switched my mind kept going back to eggs, and then I started craving chicken and steak.... it was a really strange experience for me because in the past I always looked at animal products and "non-food" like i never felt restricted because I never even considered eating them.
This physical craving and our experience moving to the woods, getting to know farmers, and setting up our homestead made leaving the vegan lifestyle even more appealing. We realized that we could become self-sufficient much quicker if we got animals on the property in a typical farming/homestead tradition instead of what we had originally planned of having farm animals on the land in an animal sanctuary model.
I know this news can be hard to hear if you are a vegan and have been following us for our vegan content. For those of you who aren't vegan, you might be confused at why this is "such a big deal," but this was a way of thinking, an ideology, a lifestyle that we were part of for a long time. I am grateful for this chapter of our life; it helped me open my mind to so many things in the world. I grew as a critical thinker. I ask more questions about all of the systems in my life that serve me. But at the same time, in the last few years, Lou and I both have felt like we no longer want to live inside any other boxes and want to have space to be free to do what we feel is best for us. I want to raise our son to trust his intuition, so it is time for me to do the same thing.
Thank you for all your love, support, and understanding. We are so grateful for this community and look forward to how things unfold from here.

A huge sign of maturity is to give yourself the opportunity to evolve. It’s so simple. I imagine that having your lives online you feel a bit of hesitation because maybe you’ll get negative feedback. Honestly though I think it’s great that you allow yourself the opportunity to change your mind. Not only about this but about all things in life. I can’t imagine how my life would be at 59 years old if I stuck to all the decisions I made at 30.

@@RaceLever Do you fear death? It sounds like you do. Death is a part of life and the animals we have created have no place in any natural ecosystem. So what would you have us do with them? It's either mass 'murder' to eliminate them, or set them free into environments they do not belong in to become pest species or to suffer horrible deaths due to how dependant some are on humans. I'm talking sheep whose wool will grow so thick their legs will no longer be able to hold them up so they will lie down and starve to death, unable to get back on their feet, or dairy cows who produce far too much milk for one calf to drink, so will get mastitis and die a slow, horrible, painful death. Time to grow up. These are not pets - they require specific equipment and knowledge to care for them properly that most people do not have. More livestock are abused when they are kept as pets than any that live on farms. Honestly, grow up and develop some critical thinking skills.

Over the years I found that chicken noodle soup helped when I had the flu. And my 74 year old granny neighbor says cheese is very important to her. I know this was a hard choice but it may make life more easier and feeling healthier. I wish you guys the best in this new nutritional journey!

You make so much sense to me and I relate to all your thoughts/the conclusions you´ve come to. I´ve never been vegan as such although I can go weeks without meat. But even so I´ve taken different dietary directions too. Fx I was inspired by ancestral diets for 2 years and ate a lot of healthy fat in the mornings and eggs and suddently navigated towards NO fat in the morning but fruits and detoxing and no eggs. Life is full of questions and uncertainty. Maybe it´s part of the journey to experience the different pulls we feel towards something and see what it means for us. I love that you articulate around making room for the reactions you´re going to feel with fx hunting. I feel I could never kill an animal or watch those videos so I´m curious to hear about your proces around that. You are the cutest couple. It ´s inspirering how you show support for eachother.

Vegetarian is the best compromise for those who want to live off the land and or get some animal protein. You still get all the health and spiritual benefits of not eating meat. But you can supplement your diet with eggs, milk, honey etc…. Just putting it out there. There is nothing ethical about hunting and killing.
All this time we have been cleverly conned by a couple who have made a fortune out of people like us by clearly pretending to be something they are not.
They are just as selfish and self-centred as the vast majority.

We are so far off from our food chain and I admire your strength in making this decision. If you guys start hunting, find someone who can teach you. Hunting can get dangerous and learning to hunt properly benefits you and the animals. I would recommend starting by buying locally raised beef/goat/pigs. Quit veganism about 5 years ago and my family instantly said I looked better. I look back at pictures when I was towards the end of veganism and while I was a healthy weight my face looked so skinny. Building muscle was tough, I didn't use workout supplements then and I don't know and now it's much easier to gain muscle. I perform better at upper body exercises, roughly 40% better. Buying leather again is a huge bonus. When you're a vegan, just buying a real good pair of winter gloves and solid or stylish footwear is problematic.

But by now I honestly don’t care much anymore. Love you guys! I’m in the same boat actually, I’ve been vegan for 5 years and am now starting to reintegrate animal products/ have had some cravings lately… Also totally agree about not being held in a box. I don’t want to keep myself in a box because I think it’s the healthier, when is it really? There are many times, while traveling, when others are cooking that it would be nice to be able to partake instead of eating lettuce and tomatoes, or nothing. I’d personally rather be able to share in the experience of food with people. That experience is so deeply human and bonding, to share home cooked food together. I have many good memories connected with traditional family recipes like chicken matzah ball soup, spaghetti, spanish recipes from when I studied in Sevilla, etc. I’ll probably stay mostly plant based, especially because it’s easy for me at home. It’s been interesting because having eggs or animal products here or there has been overall great for me. I think it’s natural having animal products, you can feel more connected to the land/animals especially when done on local farm. That connection with your food is incredibly nourishing and at the end of the day I hope we all eat what’s best for us as individuals. Great video. Thanks!!♥️🩵🥬🥚🥖🧀

I’m celebrating you so much for this decision! I was vegetarian for 20 years and vegan for a few of those. Since incorporating meat and fish back into my diet I feel so much healthier and more well nourished. Even without raising your own hens and hunting your own meat, it’s still possible to source your food in ways that align with your values, for example through farmers markets and food co-ops. And we live in a deeply flawed system that means the perfect choice isn’t always possible and we can be forgiving of ourselves for the choices we all make. We’re all just trying our best. And Dana I cannot WAIT to watch you nourish yourself and your family with healthy bioavailable animal fats and proteins - you are going to do such a good job! And Lou I would love to watch your journey with hunting. Whenever I consider eating animal products, all I can visualise is an animal suffering and I just can't do it. I support you too! I am someone who is about 90 percent plant based and have worked on many amazing organic farms, raised my own chickens, ect, ect, ect. One thing I think someone who is vegan may have a hard time wrapping their head around is the love and respect homesteaders and hunters can have for the animals they eat/eat from. I was a milkmaid for goats for six years and some of my most beautiful experiences were with those girls. It was such a strong energetic communication I could write a book on it because it was just so in depth. I made cheese from their milk, was there for all their births and felt like they and their kids were my literal family. So much love, so much respect. I know that can be hard for someone to wrap their head around but it really raises your food to the highest vibration when you know it so intimately. I haven’t been able to eat animals/animal products that I don’t know where they come from yet, but I am also not so rigid to not do that if I felt I needed to. Now I am a beekeeper and my love for my bees is next level. I am actually studying to start a pollinator sanctuary and provide a platform for teaching holistic beekeeping practices. I can’t believe I get to interact with them, it’s a dream come true. There is a lot of beauty to letting in the light in the dark of things. If you are craving chicken, I would recommend dressing and cooking a whole bird in the oven, probably how your mom did when you were little. It feels so nourishing and amazing. Or cooking a whole trout, head on. When you put love into cooking meat like that, it’s special. Wish you the best navigating this new chapter.

Hunting, fishing and raising chickens is and excellent way to provide for your family and still care for the environment and keep antibiotics out of your diet. Animals eat animal and we still love them, please love yourself ❤
Lots of love from a non dairy pescitarian.

I think you are so brave for this video. People can be judgmental so it takes a lot to come to this conclusion and then share it. Postpartum is complicated and it is important to take care of your body. Also I believe you two will be SO conscious about how you work your land...you wont waste anything and you'll be connected to what you eat and appreciate everything your land give you.

I came into the picture a long time ago. (So to speak) When you were just doing de cluttering video's. Which I loved! But, its nice to be vegan. But to have other things to eat. It doesn't matter to me. I like your channel for learning how you do things. Besides I love the family. You guys are so cute! So eat and be merry. Have a great day guys!

This is disappointing news. I'm sorry that you have had health challenges and hope that you get better soon.
It's a shame to see a beautiful vegan family return to conventional, cruelty based living but people can't be expected to do anything but their best.

I also wanted to add......as a gardener.....I really believe in the regenerative agriculture. You just cannot keep growing plants over and over and over in the same soil..........and expect any kind of nutrients to be in your food. You have to have that host of micro-organisms in the soil. Running animals on the land, having plant compost incorporated back into the soil, all of that adds to the soil so you can grow healthy nutrient dense plants.

Oh, maybe you guys could take care of bees and use the honey?! That could be so cool! I am so curious about bee keeping and also planting things that are good for bees too!
Beautiful that you're continuing with authenticity.

Good for you, listening to your body and making changes ! It’ll be wonderful! I really don’t like that you feel depleted, but breastfeeding does that to us!
Now, about this chicken thing….. be aware that living out in the country the way we do, animals eat other animals. We have foxes and coyotes and bears as well as the deer , rabbits, etc. Lou will have to build the BEST coop ever !
And hunting is a wonderful idea! We have butchered our deer and filled our freezer every year , and love having venison. It is very versatile and delicious. There is a lot to learn about hunting , and has been a healthy lifestyle choice for us.
    So GOOD FOR YOU!

This was hard for me to admit for years...going back to meat saved my life. I was vegan for many many years & ended up in the hospital with numerous doctors asking me if I used to be non-vegan & if I started getting sick when I stopped eating meat. I was shocked that these doctors (at Harvard) figured this out without me telling them anything. As soon as I started eating meat, all the various painful and horrible sicknesses I had just went away. I didn't fully understand, but one doctor told me that genetically, some people may be healthier by eating meat products, and some people can eat vegan and be fine. Going back to meat saved my life.

Omg what a tough decision! I think it won't take long to know if this is right for y'all. And I don't care what you eat or don't eat lol. I don't eat a ton of meat but it is an easy way to get ample protein. I'm looking forward to seeing how y'all incorporate it into your lives.
