Roots and Refuge is my favorite too. They have a dream of establishing a homesteading education center at their farm in South Carolina. Although she is in the south (zone 8), she throws in notes about colder zones. Another channel I like -- and closer to your zone is MIGardner. Both Jessie and MIGardner's books are helpful and encouraging too.

I haven't seen a video of yours in a long time, not since your "marie kondo" journey. And you popped up on my youtube suggested today and it was a shock to see the change that has happened in your life since you cleaned out your old room. You now have a little one, a furry one, and a brand new home that's not on wheels. It was beautiful to see and I cried when I saw your little family just sitting and enjoying the view. Life looks good from where you're at and I hope I can have that moment one day as well.

Love watching your little family enrich yourselves in this beautiful new home. Loved the 3 rules and feel they are truly important. They could be applied when starting any skill that needs your centered attention. 1) secure your work area - children & animals safe. 2) use the right equipment for the job, especially safety gear. 3) pray, meditate & center yourself to concentrate on the task you are doing & to complete your goals. Brilliant! Best wishes for all of you. 💐

Highly recommend checking out Hügelkultur method, whether in the ground or in container beds. It's incredible for water retention. "Hügelkultur, literally mound bed or mound culture is a horticultural technique where a mound constructed from decaying wood debris and other compostable biomass plant materials is later planted as a raised bed." For example, in dry southeast July-August heat I only had to water 2x per week this past growing season. The plants stayed healthy and gorgeous.

How cute you two look, sitting at the front of your tent cabin having morning coffee! Dana, if you can find the time, I would advise you begin preparing the ground now for your future garden. Double dig the soil, incorporating fallen leaves and other organic matter which can decompose over the winter. Coffee grounds, egg shells, grass clippings and sawdust are beneficial to incorporate. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

You could also start just a compost pile which you will usa at a later point in time if you don't have the time now to incorporate it into the soil directly. Or maybe that's what you meant anyway.

Hi there! I've been really enjoying binge watching your videos this summer! Just thought I'd pop in with a suggestion on the garden front. I've really enjoyed watching Charles Dowding's youtube channel and following his no dig approach for veggie gardening. The hardest part was sourcing compost, but if you act soon you could try to get some manure delivered now and turn it a few times this fall to get it to compost in time for spring. I've used the method twice now with cardboard and composted horse manure, once in VT and once in NC both with great results and much less weeding!

Hello Dana, Lou, Max, and Freya. In answer to your gardening/permaculture question... I'm on my third garden that I've built from scratch in 14 years here in the Green Mountains of Vermont, completely self-educated in my efforts. Hopefully this gives me some amount of credentials for giving my advice to you and sharing my experiences haha! 1) Build a garden/homestead that puts JOY FIRST. Place your garden WHERE you want to be hanging out (ex: taking advantage of a view), since you will be there a lot. Arrange things in a way that you find beautiful, not just efficient or productive. You both are so creative, so let your artistic selves use your garden as a canvas. Make it a place of magic and curiosity that will draw little Max in. Start smaller than perhaps you are wanting, this will reduce overwhelm as you do the big work of skilling up. You'll be more successful and learn more than enough lessons in a smaller first year garden. I guarantee you will grow enough to have a full experience eating and preserving from a small garden, and it will let you know where you want to go in the future vs. deciding this before you have actually had an experience. You can fill in any gaps in production by getting veg from local farmers, and the benefit of building relationships with local growers will serve you well on your garden journey. Gardens take time, so embrace a slow pace to keep your efforts coming from a place of joy. A resource I have found inspiring by a VT author and gardener is "The Complete Kitchen Garden" by Ellen Ecker Ogden. Also a deep internet dive of "portager garden" is inspiring for designs. 2) I'm finding amazing tips from Huw Richard's UA-cam channel and recent book called "The Vegetable Grower's Handbook". He employs lots of permaculture ideas and his no-dig method was a game changer when I installed my third garden this spring on top of a grassy lawn. I think his well-tested approach and organization of methods will appeal to you. In a recent video, he discussed making wood chips out of small branches and limbs for bulking up compost, which seems like a fit for you since you are harvesting some trees on your land. 3) In addition to making compost this fall, another thing you can do that needs time is plant some fruit trees and bushes. It's not too late to get them in this year! ... GOOD LUCK, I am rooting for you, and can't wait to see what you create!

I always wondered why more caffeine-obsessed vanlifers and nomads don't use an old-fashioned coffee grinder!!! Low-tech, historically proven ... easily used ... and just looks cool.
I love the half-moon cutout in the outhouse door, but I might put some screen on the inside of the door over the cutout AND over the gaps at the top of the roof (and elsewhere) so no insects can come in and "nest" in there ... a bees nest or swarm in the outhouse would NOT be a lot of fun!
I have a vintage travel trailer with vents (including a fridge vent with just a grate over it) that I need to tackle ... it stays in storage all winter and I think we've just been lucky that we haven't had an infestation as of yet ....

If you want garlic for next summer it is time to put them in the ground in october. Just break up a garlic into cloves, without peeling them, and make a hole with about 5 cm. left from clove tip to ground surface. Cover it up and wait for the magic. Does not really require any work, besides putting them in the ground. Greetings from Denmark/Sweden!/ Jessica

As winter starts to settle in it would be wise to always have your spray on you. Loving your new adventure, stay safe and enjoy. Though abit of an investment an incinerator toilet is a nice ad. The composting toilet works but as far as composting goes depending on your garden size you will likely be doing it on alot larger scale.

I would check out the channel Simple Living Alaska! With Eric and Ariel, I think they are living a similar lifestyle you both are working towards. They aren't vegan, but they have a lot of projects and tips for canning I think you might find helpful. Also they grow most of all their own food, so you might learn something! I love watching you guys 💛

Now that is a wall tent! Bourbon and sugar. Rub bourbon on the babies gums and pour 3 fingers for yourself. Also clove oil works as well.

Do they live full time in that tent? First think she will need is a huge 8 foot fence around the garden with a large gate to allow you to get your equipment in and out. This will help keep the deer and bear out hopefully. It would be nice if you had a chicken house incorporated in your fence built, they help with fertilizing etc. Good luck.

I’m glad you’re working your dog. You may want to consider a bark alert. If she is truly to search off leash in the woods for people she may be far or in cover and perhaps in the dark. Laying down you won’t see or hear her. Consider doing some online classes on tracking or scent work. I’m a little concerned with her alert-she seems confused. Typically we want the dogs to be a little more up and happy with searches and at the end you’re bossing her around and making it unpleasant. I’d suggest a foundational exercise for alerting since it’s so specific that is away from the actual searches and more upbeat and fun. Good job! FYI you can take auditing classes online for nosework that might be helpful for your training. They are like $50 for six week courses.

As someone else mentioned, check out Roots and Refuge's UA-cam channel. Also Justin Rhodes -- he's really into permaculture

The Dutch Farmer, Charles Dowding, Huw Richards, not really your geography but inspiring. BUT - I would urge you to make a list of all the creatures near where you live that would eat what you grow and design a Fort Knox Style garden so that you actually get something. This year I have had ONE DEER visiting my garden - she ate every single thing I planted over a couple of nights. Disheartening.

Try no dig along with permaculture. Saves work from the get go! Charles Dowding and Steff Hafferty are great sources. 👍

I would recommend Resilient Gardening by Carol Deppe for a more intellectual read, and the Gardening book by Jessica Sowards to start with. Her UA-cam channel Roots & Refuge has tons of great gardening content 2 to 3 years ago. (She's moved and it's more focused on cows now.)

Where in the States are you located? I feel like relevant gardening channel recommendations will be highly dependant on your local climate. I'm guessing since it's getting cold in September where you are that you aren't too far off from Canada?
I live in Calgary, Canada, so anything from the Southern States is not useful for me for the most part, as the growing seasons / cycles are so different from here. I like MI Gardener, but it's more of a small, urban garden rather than a permaculture garden. Great tips for growing different things though!

Highly recommend UA-camrs, Jessica and Jeremiah Soward, of “Roots & Refuge.” They’re a great resource. Jess is a fund of knowledge & often mentions other UA-cam channels that have helped her and can help her subscribers with some of the issues they’re having with growing food and homesteading. Jess has a few books on organic food gardening, permaculture, etc. on Amazon. Her latest book on homesteading just came out Sept 2022. She is thorough in her research & has fantastic resources.

Danke für safe chainsawing. Responsable people caring about live and themselves. It avouids waisting time ( like I so often witnessed on farms and buildingsites.) &human ressources. Hospitals have other things to do!. Still don't see how you can keep warm in winter, enjoy.
