  • Thirty days of going vegan is in the books and I have to say this one was a bit more difficult than keto for me as it took me out of my comfort zone. This Vegan 30 day challenge certainly surprised me in several ways and at the end of the day, I think it is a reasonable diet to follow as long as it's planned adequately.
If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

I became vegetarian in 2nd grade after reading a book of food facts, which also included how hot dogs were made. I realized then that meat came from animals. My family didn't respect my choices AT ALL. I was excluded from family meals. They'd all sit at the table and eat while my little 7-year-old self was in the kitchen trying to cook for myself. Becoming vegetarian was a trial by fire. The entire world was against me but I stayed strong and eventually my family accepted it wasn't changing. Transitioning to veganism was harder for me because I thought it was something I could overcome through sheer willpower like becoming vegetarian. But Dr. Mike is right that planning is critical. The first two times I tried to become vegan overnight and I failed. The third time, I did transition overnight but I did it in tandem with research and planning out what I would do from there. And I've been happily vegan since 2019 :)

The average person doesn’t get anywhere near what they should in terms of their fibre intake, so if you decide to try a whole foods vegan diet, the trick is to increase your fibre intake very gradually (or apply the FODMAP principles which will reap similar results). Consistency is key with fibre. It will take a little while for your tummy to adjust - but it’s absolutely worth persevering. I used to get colds all the time, but since adopting a whole foods approach, I hardly ever get colds, and when I do, they’re over so much quicker. I credit all those immune boosting fruit and veggies, the spices such as turmeric, ginger, garlic etc - and elimination of foods which tend to encourage production of mucus (dairy). If you need a home remedy to replace the Manuka honey, date syrup or maple syrup would be good and cheaper too.

I know many farms do it so no fault to you or your family but in terms of the goals of zero waste, the environmental impact of burning is significantly worse than landfill/mulching. Simple way to think about it is if every landfill, instead of being big piles of dirt/debris is now a forever fire because all the trash is constantly being burned.

Vegan for 4 years, luckily my partner is too, and i have several vegetarian friends how tried several times, even for months, to stick to a vegan dieat, but gas was strait up untolerable. And i feel them. I have resorted to 2 days of soaking of my legumes (every dinner), slow cooking (with a first half to low temperature so to activate the naturally present phytase in the tegument), combu and vegetable included in the coocking, no salt till the and a no bicharbonate at all, and mixing it all up at the end. This is basically perfection. And yet, i still produce more gas than preferable. And i can only eat them for dinner, so i gas out while i sleep. And absoluteli not in the 6 hours before gym, since i still get bloated stomach.
Being vegan (and i'll stay such) I still see this as THE BIGGEST problem of the vegan diet, period.

I have personally been a vegetarian for over 13 years and I definitely understand where you are coming from as far as both will power to do other things as well as your body adjusting with added flatulence. I can say from personal experience, both of those DO get better with time, and eventually it will be completely second nature so you are not putting in so much mental effort into your diet. I was a vegetarian for about 5 years before becoming vegan for a year and I experienced the same stomach problems making EACH transition. It was odd, but it did go away after a few weeks of getting readjusted. My diet is so much a part of me now I barely even think about it, so no extra energy is being used forcing myself to eat a certain way. Obviously you know what's best for your needs, and I am definitely not trying to convert anybody, but know IT DOES GET EASIER.

@Aniruddh Sharma I'm not vegan, but mate, you should really do some basic research before calling anybody ridiculous. No vegans I ever heard of are against breastfeeding at all, where did you even get that? In fact, if anything, I heard of many vegans breastfeeding for longer than usual, until the baby weans off naturally or something, not sure what the proper terminology is. Anyway, longer than your average mom. And the reason why vegans stay away from dairy is the ethical issues, same as all other restrictions they have. Cows are mammals, so in order for a cow to produce milk she needs to get impregnated (artificially) and shortly after giving birth the calf is taken away and the milk she produces is taken. The calf is either taken to the veil industry, raised to repeat the mother's fate (if female) or just killed. Those cows also obviously live in shitty conditions, get impregnated as often as possible and have way shorter lifespans than they would naturally (because it's not profitable to let them live for long). Vegans don't think that is appropriate to treat animals like this, same as most "regular" people wouldn't like the idea of same thing happening to dogs/cats. I hope that was somewhat helpful!

The thing with honey is that even though we don’t force bees to make it, it is their food and doesn’t belong to us. And of course, bees, like any other sentient creature, can be treated unethically. So generally, if a vegan is strict enough to avoid honey, that’s why.

In 2017, somebody challenged me to go vegan. I was brought up Ukrainian Canadian, one thing you'll see in all Ukrainian Canadian households where I live is that beef, chicken and pork are the life force, they gave their lives to feed us and we have them with every meal. But, regardless I went vegan and the most surprising thing happened during my last week on the treatment. One day, I woke up feeling light, not like I'd lost weight but my mind was bright, I was happy, chipper, and had energy stores galore. It was like I'd spent my entire life with a loaded hockey bag on my shoulders 24/7 and someone lifted it off.
Now, I didn't stay vegan, but I didn't regress far either. I went to vegetarianism where dairy is allowed, fish is allowed, and you can eat meat once a month and that's where I've been ever since. I still like beef and I love curried goat, but it's better saved for once a month.
For the bloating and gas, chai tea. Black chai tea is a good fix for any GI issues, it doesn't solve any of them but it pushes them to the background until you can deal with them.

I am late to the party but from my experience the first few weeks are the hardest because we all are so controlled by our habits. After this first couple weeks it gets easier an easier till you can't understand why not everybody is doing it. This last point is probably one reason for the fights between vegans and non-vegans.
A Tip for people who want to look into vegan food: try ist once every week and after a while maybe do it full time, as long as you feel happy about it.

Usually when vegans struggle with gas it's because they're eating too much fibre 🤷‍♀️ EDIT: Guys I didn't expect anyone to even respond to my comment. I should have worded things more carefully and been clearer. A dramatic increase in fibre will obviously cause problems, but theres also some people who are just having too much. Check out Wheezy Waiter's recent video on trying veganism. He talks about having to dial it back.

When you suddenly increase your fiber intake, it can cause gas and bloating. This is because the bacteria in your gut are not used to breaking down that amount of fiber, which leads to increased gas production.
For people who don't consume enough fiber, this can be a common issue. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, only about 5% of Americans consume the recommended amount of fiber per day, which is about 25-38 grams for adults. This means that 1 in every 5 people may not be getting enough fiber in their diet.
To avoid or reduce the symptoms of gas and bloating, it's recommended to gradually increase your fiber intake over several days or weeks, drink plenty of water, and spread fiber intake throughout the day. It's also important to choose fiber-rich foods that are easier to digest, such as cooked vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

Some people would argue that honey is vegan but the reason it isn’t to most it because of a few ethical reasons. The males are crushed to death for artificial insemination, the queen bee has her wings clipped to be easily identified, and to prevent swarming. Often times during the winter the hive is culled because it’s cheaper to get ride of the entire hive then to make sure they are fed. Gives with “bad temperaments” are often culled aswell, to do these beekeepers may light the hive on fire, suffocate them or trap the bees in bags and leave them in the sun to either suffocate or pass away due to the high temperature upon many other things.

The beekeeping industry is helping to save honey bees so some argue it's ok. Though, it is taking it away from being a food source for their larvae and bees are sometimes killed during harvesting. On a side note, medicine is usually an acceptable excuse, even in religious diets (like judaism), if there are no other alternatives considered as effective

No trouble getting my calories in, even when I went to the gym up to seven hours a week, and no deficiencies. It can be done! But I agree it does take an effort, you need to invest time in learning about food and cooking new dishes.
What made me go plant-based was a combination of lactose intolerance and having severe pain after eating meat. Crying on the floor kind of pain. My ideas about animal welfare developed afterwards, when I could let go of the idea that eating meat was normal and necessary, as I was raised to believe.

You can try to have Indian food as it has so many delicious and healthy recipes .It is properly cooked unlike undercooked and uncooked salads which actually cause bloating.I have been vegetarian all my life and never experienced any problem. Anyways, huge shoutout to your amazing channel. Love from India! ❤

Here's the situation, from my perspective. Mike was eating what seems like a lot of processed vegan food. That'll make you pretty tired even on a non vegan diet. You're obviously going to be better off, whether you're vegan or not, eating foods that aren't processed.
If you plan on going vegan, I recommend eating more raw vegetables, and foods that aren't specifically advertised as vegan. So, maybe avoid 'vegan cheese'.
It's going to take a while for your digestive system to become used to a whole new diet. Cutting out a large "food group" is definitely going to give you gas or mess up your digestion somehow, but that'll probably stop once your body gets used to the change. For me, it took at least 4 or 5 weeks.
I'd also bear in mind that a plant-based diet won't always result in weight loss, if that's your goal. There are a lot of plant-based alternatives to meat or dairy, which probably contain more calories, saturated fats, etc.

One of his biggest problems were digestion and not getting enough calories, so eating only unprocessed vegan foods (beans, whole grains, raw(!) vegetables etc) would make it better? Those things are super hard to digest and higher im volume (means you need to eat way more to get enough calories). Seems pretty counterproductive, but maybe that's just me. I tried going vegan too and had to give up after a few months. I used cronometer and took supplements to hit all my nutrient targets, cooked from scratch, but my digestion killed me. Was in pain pretty much 24/7 except in the morning before I ate breakfast and I tried every hack I could find to make beans more digestible. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@19Thunderbird94 actually, there are hundreds of unprocessed foods that we eat on a daily basis, and that aren't difficult to digest. Also, veganism isn't easy for the first month or so, because your body isn't used to the change in macronutrients. You'll eat less fibre on a non vegan diet, so suddenly switching it is, well, surprising to you digestive system.

@@ish4638 well, I stuck with it for more than 2 months and it got progressively worse. No sign of my body adjusting. In the beginning I was only bloated and in pain, when I stopped I had diarrhea multiple times a day to the point where I was afraid to leave the house and not making it to the nearest toilet in time. I have to completely avoid beans and limit certain vegetables, grains and seeds. My only plantbased protein options are a few select protein powders, pea based mock meats, quorn and nuts.

@Sparked Tiger I suppose it can depends on what/how you eat. I never had complications switching over to my vegetarian diet, but also I already ate a low-meat diet so it wasn't that much of a change. A lot of factors to consider. Hypothetically, a personalized vegetarian diet can work for you, but that might be too difficult.

if you're having trouble with variety you can try indian vegetarian food that doesn't have milk or honey cause most indian vegetarian food and vegan food is pretty similar other than they way it's cooked. you get a lot of spices and flavour and it covers most of your nutrition too. if you have an indian/ south asian friend you can ask them for recipes and get help from them. in restaurants you'll probably have to tell them that you dont want milk products or you can ask the waiter for stuff that doesn't have milk and meat. also don't eat any type of paneer dish cause that's made of milk and most people don't know that

A plant-based/vegan diet is best when doing mostly whole foods rather than fo-meat or processed snack foods/ take out orders. I know this video is older but :) it is a good one! The gas and gut sounds were from the surge of total fiber, can take several weeks-months to gradually adapt.

Mediterranean food is indeed delicious, and obviously healthy (since life expectancy in Italy for example is among the highest in the world) - only it has nothing to do with the totally artificial "Mediterranean diet". In Italy, people eat lots of white bread (really good white bread though), and pasta. No self-respecting Italian would touch "whole-grain" stuff. They also eat wonderful sausages and cheeses, more meat than Central and North Europeans, and of course sweet pastries. They also eat a lot of vegetables and drink a lot of wine.
So don't bother with a "diet" but enjoy real Mediterranean food. It's definitely good for you.

@@leonie4696 Problem is, you won't find real mediterranean food unless you travel to Italy. The sausages we make at home here are very different from the ones you buy in stores, and more expensive(even 15 to 25 euros per piece). Also, the "mediterranean" diet is actually much much different from what people imagine, we eat without discrimination every type of meat, which is sometimes not very healthy: eating red meat 3 to 4 days in a row, plus pasta at every lunch because it's a MUST. I personally would feel better with a vegan rather than a mediterranen(I tried the former and I live with the second one)

Been vegan for almost 10 years. I think if you don’t have a reason for it, and frankly, all three (environment, health, and ethics) you cannot stick to it. The SAD involves addiction and you can’t beat that without some serious moral conviction! :-).

  • @amandamaree
    @amandamaree День тому

That was interesting. I’ve never had any of those problems as a vegan. It’s incredibly easy to not feel tempted by meat when it’s for moral/ethical reasons, I actually feel genuinely repulsed by meat. I could see that making it difficult for people doing it for health reasons. Personally I’m an advocate for everyone eating less meat rather than trying to make everyone vegan. I’m glad he mentioned that at the beginning, it’s a more achievable goal for most.
