Thomas, thanks much for your thoughtful reviews. This one in particular sparked my interest in getting a smart electric convertible. Used EV convertibles seem to be kind of rare here in the USA but I was able to find a 2013 model in another state and have it shipped to me. Just got it last week and it's really fun!
When you can't check a car out in person reviews like yours are extra helpful.

This video convinced me to buy a used electric Smart Fortwo cabrio last week. They are quite affordable on the used market and so much fun to drive. I also enjoyed your video on sustainability and Smart electric cars. Thank you.

I would like to try one out. It looks a lot of fun. My Mum has a 2009 Smart ForTwo but it's very noisy and has a lot of vibration. The EV would be so much better for that type of car that you drive around town mostly. The range is no problem as long as you can charge nearby.

Nice summery Thomas........ please remember to perform a full review and range test on the Hyundai Ioniq Electric when you have the opportunity (similar to the one you did on the new e-Golf) 😀

Linear engine hybrid with 4 wheel electric drive would be much better, the batteries should be rather skipped than rely on them. 400-500cc engine should be sufficient for example.. that's so small that no one should be having any problems with emissions of such small engines, especially if the model would be eventually adapted into automated taxi business also. Linear combustion can be easily adapted to feed a wide range of fuels from gases to liquids and combinations of them, this would further make the car more flexible and ecologic in use.

Awesome ! I can't agree more, Electric convertibles rock. I think I will set for this one while waiting for the Tesla model 3. And enjoy the open top. Thanks for that very interesting review (shared on Twitter BTW).

I don't agree with this, convertibles should have a V8, V10 or V12, as the sound will be glorious when you lower the roof.

    Love it!
Although with no charging station in my condo, I'd have no way to recharge it. This is the case for a lot of people in cities.
Anyway you can find out if it's going to be electric only for North America? I've contacted smart Canada and haven't got a reply!

Autogefühl it’s a 2016 smart prime (with the leather heated seats) i don’t know if it’s turbo or not. I’ve had real issues with the alternator not charging the battery then it goes in and it’s a software fault. 🙄

My old girlfriend bought one of those and was hit by a shopping cart at the local Wal-Mart. The emt's gave her CPR after the fire department used the jaws of life to free her from the wreckage. But the ice cream and eggs in the shopping cart were undamaged (silver lining)

  • @eternitynaut

The range is too low, at least 3x higher would be needed and 150 kW DC fast charging or better given that people living in the city will likely not have a garage so will have to use fast chargers.

    • @davetravels9273
      @davetravels9273 7 років тому +4

This car is not for you if you don't have access to a plug overnight. EVs are still in an early adoption phase. There are plenty of people in the city who have a garage and could have a plug installed. This car is also great for people who live in the suburbs and commute on B roads, so there is plenty of market in Europe. However, I don't see many instances where this would be an ideal car in the U.S. There is also the gasoline version in europe for those without a plug.

    • @davetravels9273

True it is pricey, even the gasoline version is, but that price is before EV incentives and includes 19% tax. It's still affordable, but it may not be the best value in terms of practicality. But it is a great car if it fits your lifestyle.

Living in a German city, I almost never drive more than 40 km or 25 miles in a day. It is really good fun in the city and the Germany country side (max speed is 60 mph on German B roads). Super easy to maneouver on tight streets in european cities and to parallel park in the parking gaps. Drive one and you will get it. That being said, if you drive on the motorway/highway and/or live in the U.S. there are few instances where this cars makes sense.

    • @SilverSamurai12

It's absolutely a city car, although it's only a matter of time until the battery's start to improve which in turn will increase the range.

electric is the biggest scam. you don't protect the environment because electricity is still mostly made with polluting methods, the electric cars are cheaper to manufacture, but they still sell it more expensive, soo bigger profit margin. the only loser is the customer, who will find out that if for some reason the car batteries deplete somewhere, your car is bricked.

My Smart Electric is far more enjoyable to drive than a hybrid, I know, I own a Smart ED, and a Tesla and drive Prius' when on business trips. The EV acceleration is strong and so much more fun to experience. Try it.
