gear selector located on the steering column is very nice to have (reminds me about full size sedans from the US in the nineties that could house six people and so they moved out that stick from the center console to make room for a third passenger in the front row.) but what I don't appreciate is the fact that they confused drive with reverse and put it on there the wrong way round, lol.
That is actually dangerous and why I would avoid this car. If you accidentally hit the gear selector on the steering column when driving the car can break down and cause an accident in the middle of the road
@@nickm5978 that isn't true at all for both the modern incarnation as well as the traditional style (why would someone design something that's potentially dangerous in the first place?) while I don't know exactly about this car, it's obvious that it's a fully electronically operated selector and the computer wouldn't allow anything that could damage the car. and chances are very high that it's still double secured by the user being required to press and hold an additional "unlock" button like it's the case with every other automatic "gear" selector as well. now for the "traditional" variant: it wasn't possible to change anything like it's possible with a conventional wiper stalk, or something. you needed to reach around behind the level, pull it towards you (with built-in resistance) and only then it was possible to move it up or down to change the driving mode. so, simply hitting it (it's reclined much [!] further back than the stalks you're actually supposed to reach and operate from the steering wheel) won't do or cause anything.
@@nickm5978 it wouldn't move in the first place because you most likely need to depress some other button on the outward face as well to unlock the "move"-function first. (making you need the entire hand and not just the flick of a finger.) it's physically so far reclined that it's difficult (if not impossible) to actually reach from the steering wheel (it's not intended to be operated while also grabbing the steering wheel.) and lastly: even if you'd still forcefully try to do this, the computer wouldn't accept this input. I can precisely tell you from my own experience with one of my classic cars with no fancy computer control at all what happens when you forcefully select reverse while driving: the engine gets overwhelmed and stalls. that's about it. nothing more. the car then glides along (remember, you got a torque converter sitting between the engine and the gear box [instead of a clutch.] this means, that there's no stiff physical connection [okay, you've a locking function nowadays on modern cars, but let's not complete things too much] between the engine and the wheels. so, when the wheels cause the gearbox to spin against the crankshaft, then this is actually possible due to the fluid inside the torque converter.)
There is a technical reason ultrasound sensors can't give you a distance estimate to the very end. Below a certain threshhold the ultrasound is fully reflected and so the sensor can't tell a difference between let's say 25 or 15 centimeters.
Choosing which generation of each car to use would be arbitrary. Unfortunately, I don't think they'd ever do this, and if they do it will be the latest models, therefore not including the Schirocco. Although it probably would include the "R" variant SUVs.
@@SatanDotExe even the newest version of each would be interesting. Surely they could get ones with all the same engine easily enough? I would offer up my TTS but I've just done the stage 1 so wouldn't be a direct comparison.
Has a weird amount of MINI vibe to it without being a copy… which is a compliment. I would almost argue this would be a more sensible futuristic approach to MINI styling than what MINI themselves are doing atm. Perhaps just me…
Not just you. Got my #1 few days ago. Chose it mainly because MINI does not have a similar sized/ranged EV available. That is 5 doors, 4-5 seats and a range of ~400km. My other car is a MINI Cooper 😎
I hear you talking about old-fashioned USB. But it is not old-fashioned. It's called USB type A, the other one is USB type C. They are both in use. A lot of phones with a charging cable are USB type A to type C. So both of them are very convenient.
It is the first EV that i would like to by . We don't need EV with 1000 or 2000 hp. We want to try to save earth and all the human kind. I will check the weight and the price with some options. Thank you MAT.

@@meinkonto6344 Yeah because they took it from Mercedes. The first gen Teslas actually shared many parts with Mercedes, including the stalks and window open buttons.
The voice controls are actually solid it seems. @@fishfinnersand also the one from EXTREME E. Extremely similar.
Would like to see Matt stay young and sit in the front seat 😁 to keep watching his amazing reviews all time long 👍🏻 the best car reviewer ever
Incredible job, carwow team! You've absolutely got this review thing down to a science! Splendid job and yes - I agree with your assessment, it looks like a buy.
I only wish there was some depth to this, but really - absolutely every essential thing was covered, thank you!
Best episode of all time imo
2023 Dodge Viper Hatchback :D
Gorgeous car!
gear selector located on the steering column is very nice to have (reminds me about full size sedans from the US in the nineties that could house six people and so they moved out that stick from the center console to make room for a third passenger in the front row.)
but what I don't appreciate is the fact that they confused drive with reverse and put it on there the wrong way round, lol.
That is actually dangerous and why I would avoid this car. If you accidentally hit the gear selector on the steering column when driving the car can break down and cause an accident in the middle of the road
@@nickm5978 that isn't true at all for both the modern incarnation as well as the traditional style (why would someone design something that's potentially dangerous in the first place?)
while I don't know exactly about this car, it's obvious that it's a fully electronically operated selector and the computer wouldn't allow anything that could damage the car. and chances are very high that it's still double secured by the user being required to press and hold an additional "unlock" button like it's the case with every other automatic "gear" selector as well.
now for the "traditional" variant: it wasn't possible to change anything like it's possible with a conventional wiper stalk, or something. you needed to reach around behind the level, pull it towards you (with built-in resistance) and only then it was possible to move it up or down to change the driving mode. so, simply hitting it (it's reclined much [!] further back than the stalks you're actually supposed to reach and operate from the steering wheel) won't do or cause anything.
@@HxTurtle So I'm driving and accidentally hit the gear selector into reverse what would happen thinking it's the indicators or the windscreen wipers.
@@nickm5978 it wouldn't move in the first place because you most likely need to depress some other button on the outward face as well to unlock the "move"-function first.
(making you need the entire hand and not just the flick of a finger.)
it's physically so far reclined that it's difficult (if not impossible) to actually reach from the steering wheel (it's not intended to be operated while also grabbing the steering wheel.)
and lastly: even if you'd still forcefully try to do this, the computer wouldn't accept this input.
I could not live with that fox. It's like the return of Clippy!
All hail Clippy!
it's really a Smart ass
For a review that's 90% features over driving, this was excellent. Love it.
There is a technical reason ultrasound sensors can't give you a distance estimate to the very end. Below a certain threshhold the ultrasound is fully reflected and so the sensor can't tell a difference between let's say 25 or 15 centimeters.
The smart car really made an improvement!
Hopefully at the expense of lots of bhp that is.
Don’t be wet, the old ForTwo Brabus would wipe the floor with this performance wise and was a masterstroke of design.
Affordable drag race! 2008 TTS Vs Golf R Vs S3 Vs Scirrocco R. All have the same engine so would love to see which perform better!! Thanks
@@LivingwithPanic I have a MK3 TTS myself so I’d love to see a comparison video for sure.
@@SatanDotExe I actually think the TTS beats them all due to being lighter and slightly more powerful but need some confirmation🤣
Thank you MAT.
i love that fox at the corner of the screen, so cute, then i cried laughing when he talks like a regular man
Like what I see so far. This against the new Fisker would be interesting. Those 2 are my favorites so far of new electrics.
This car looks extremely well made. Kudos to smart, I would seriously consider this on top of my buying list.
Swatch made a good call way back when to have Mercedes make their cars rather than try to make their own- and now with Geely
Nice to see a light coloured roof lining rather than the awful gloomy black that is so common these days.
This car has a very good design on the exterior
Smart is known for being a small quirky city car. Wait and the next generation will be an SUV! I think this way it's ruined. Imagine having S class as a supermini!
yep as some one who own a fourtwo and roadster not buying this.
I’m sure smaller versions will follow.
Mercedes is his father......gotcha😅😂
I originally wanted to get the EX30, but the #1 is much better equipped and the lease offers were considerably cheaper.
Great review. I really appreciate that you test some real-life situations like putting a child’s seat in.
Thats also came to my mind, I list out Ex30 due to lack of headup display and front screen, this solved it , thanks smart
I actually loved this car...beautiful
One big disadvantage with the way the back seats fold is that there is absolutely no cargo wall to stop your cargo from leaving the cargo bay and drop in between, or crush, the front seats.
the chinese are building a better smart, then mercedes did the last decades...
MOST rich people stay rich by spending like the poor and investing without stopping then most poor people stay poor by spending like the rich yet not investing like the rich but impressing them
You are so correct! Save, invest and spend for necessities and a few small luxuries relatives to on's total assets ratio.
Even with the economic recession or downturn, I'm so happy I've been earning $60,000 returns from my $12,000 investment on Short term

So overpriced, you gotta be kidding me.
one of the coolest and practical EV
Smart def watches carwow, those door bins are massive!
6:04 100% agreed. Mercedes has the best gear selector in the business, and for some reason, almost all other manufacturers have some other inferior way of switching gears. Every other implementation is just waste of space!
tesla has the same
@@meinkonto6344 Yeah because they took it from Mercedes. The first gen Teslas actually shared many parts with Mercedes, including the stalks and window open buttons.
12:47 the best part of the entire video
Congrats on the 100k new subscribers in ONE DAY! 8.4mil!
This car is amazing ! I am going to buy one for the kids !
The new mini looks really smart!
Looking forward to a number 2.
The voice controls are actually solid it seems. Unlike Tesla, this seems to make it VERY convenient to use the UI on the tablet, while allowing you to use the fox for intricate instructions that make it so you don't fuss with the damn menus. Unlike Tesla, it has a HUD and actual display for the driver to easily see speed and range....HUGE.
Super modern designs! Wow that's some nice stuff.
The baby seat anchor points are SUCH a great feature for people who have them, and I HATED trying to fuss with ones in Toyotas or hondas.
Back seat thigh support seemed quite shite actually, given you had a lot of space under your hammies.
it also costs as much as a dual drive Tesla
I di a test drive last week, and I loved it. I'm hoping to get it next year as delivery is slow here in Zurich.
I just had a look on Autoscout24 and there are 47 cars listed at the moment, so no need to wait if you really want one. Most are the low spec version though.
10:57 Yianni has captured the production crew! 😅
right, so the difference in range is attributed to silicon carbide in the electric motor. it's apparently the way forward
I actually really like it!
It looks like it's related to the mini.
The previous ones looked like they were related to golf carts!
Best car reviewer
Thats a very very well thought out car, would never imagine it coming from smart.
Wow, I was one of your first 15k subscribers after you switched from hosting AutoCar I believe. This channel has grown quite rapidly.
This thing is actually not stupid, like the first one. It’s pretty cool, hope it comes to the U.S.

one good lookin ev hot hatch...with AC 22kwh charging that's superb!
