- This is the 260th episode of Fully Charged and just possibly, the very first proper, informative and clear car review. This is very much down to the talent and experience of Jonny Smith, his first time on the series (but definitely not the last)
After watching this, I know I have to up my game, I'm so thrilled Jonny could do this show with us and I'm really intrigued to hear your reaction.
Thank you Smart for flying Jonny and Mark out to Toulouse and organising the cars.
And once again, we could not have done this show without the generous support of all our Patreons. Thank you, and

Really enjoyed Jonny's review! Great style. Would enjoy more episodes.
This was nicely done. I welcome this host to be on again, he did a great job!
Yup totally agree
You mean he's not a "regular"???!!!
😭😭😭
completely agree
Yes great, well done...
Nice to see a new host, starting to grow on FC gives Robert a break sometimes and less pressure on him. Like how Jonny explains the vehicle. Hope we get to see him more in future on FC.
Robert might be busy with his thing with Red Dwarf, so this step was quite logical.
Plus there are tonnes of cars coming out in the next couple of years. Robert can't review them all.
David?? DAVID??? What are the chances!!! Not seen you since Uni!
In fact I think Johnny should focus mostly on cars and leave the rest to Robert. Because unlike Robert, he actually knows a LOT more about cars, so he can actually do a useful review instead of just doodling around. And he's no less funny! Really enjoyed this one.
Wow, another Tassie EV fan here! Do I know you? :)
Johhny Smith? From Fifth Gear? Working for Fully Charged now? Awesome!
moar pls
Blayk Giddens truly awesome! I laughed out loud at the split tailgate piece
He's fantastic! Robert is also fantastic though!
A TV show in the UK.
He's a big electric vehicle fan. Has built his own car. He certainly has the credentials to be hosting this show. flux-capacitor.co.uk/
This was a very refreshing change. Hopefully more to come from Jonny
Nice one Jonny!! Wow Fully Charged has two awesome hosts.
BMSWEB And he also has a thing for glory holes 🤔
Facebook
I couldn't agree more, BMSWEB. I am now looking into purchasing an electric vehicle, but I need to know more about what UK Government grants are available to me. That is not my only driving factor, if you'll excuse the pun.
Wow, those 17 minutes just flew by! Great review that flows beautifully! Well done
A nice and welcome surprise to see Jonny on the TV again :)
Harrison Ganner this is actually not TV. And this is refreshing, for example they don't have to fit a time slot as well as they don't have to plan around advertising breaks with cliff hangers. :)
Ruben Kelevra By on the TV I mean literally on the TV screen, as I was watching this on UA-cam on my Xbox, rather than on my phone for example :)
Oh wow. A proper car review with actual car information that is useful! He's quite funny too.
I love all the useful information like "plastic is gash" lol
Such a relaxed and straightforward review. I love Robert but sometimes it's good to get alternate perspectives as well. Johnny has a good insight into the production side of automotive journalism and so is a great compliment to Robert's shall we say more intuitive presentation style. Thumbs up to the whole crew at Fully Charged!
This is a perfect vehicle for the car sharing programs. It could park anywhere and forget about insurance, taxes, loan payments, gas refills, cleaning, etc..
Great option for the people who need a second car too.
If Jonny does the car reviews, and llwelmnmnlwnmxmn... ;) does the energy tech, like batteries and eco cities, I think you have a killer show!! Please do that. Thanks for another great video. Cheers!
agree - but bring Robert in just to demo the car door mechanism ;-)
They could always do a 2-part review - technical things by Jonny, casual things by Robert. That way the review would be more versatile.
We need more of this chap.
What a great review! This channel just gets better and better.
Great review, great to see Jonny Smith back again in front of the camera. Good call Robert, what a team you two will make :)
I love Johnny! So glad so see him on Fully Charged as a host.
great, Jonny. Love to see more! Thanks!
I really enjoyed that review, Johnny was a great choice. I hope we get to see him again
what a beautiful detail presentation, so informative...!! I love the way he gets into all the minute details... I watch all the videos and im a big big fan .. good work.. best of luck..!!
Jonny was great. I look forward to seeing more of him on Fully Charged.
There's no need apologise for not being Robert. hehe... We want more car stuff from Smith, and more tech stuff from Llewellyn. Happy days!
Always liked Jonny! Great review, lovely editing. Never thought I would be into smarts but quite tempting!
Jonny Smith first Fully Charged vid? Thank God you stayed on!!! What a partnership, for the greater benefit of the EV transport infotainment world!!!
Robert and Johnny, what a wonderful balance. This channel is just class.
Great to see Johnny Smith on the show! He's a welcome addition!
Love this one, beautifully shot and edited
Perfect addition to FullyCharged! Great episode well done to all the team.
Wonderful video, awesome job. A very smooth, informative, and entertaining review of both models. Thank you.
A very well done review! Thanks, Jonny!
Great Review ! Enjoyed .
Thanks
Joe
I really, really like this style of reviewing; the way he pays attention to details most people often overlook. It's something I often judge a car by.
Welcome to the Fully Charged team, Jonny! I eagerly await your next video.
I loved this video. It is so calming that I might wanna watch this before sleeping sometimes when I have insomnia. Not only did I like the 2 seater car but also the video quality, the French sceneries, the guy, his trousers, his height and especially his sneakers. Keep it up!
Great host, Jonny Smith was great on Fifth Gear. Hope to see you in more videos in this great channel.
good job on this one, great episode as always!
That is a genuine awesome review; informative, entertaining and the right lenght. Thanks!
Well done Jonny, really enjoyed the review. As others already mentioned - what a great team. Keep up the good work.
Could you please include metric units? Thanks.
Janosch Pelzer To convert miles into Km divide by 5 and multiply by 8. So 40 mph equals 64 kmh. It's really not difficult.
What it is It's really completely unnecessary. As well as imperial units...At least for the rest of the world ;)
They do this on other shows and it doens't work, no one would naturally say both so it breaks the flow of whoever's talking. Google is your friend, or basic mental maths.
+Janosch Pelzer Agreed
It's easy enough just to Google up a converter, there are apps and websites for this. Or you could just watch a show that comes from a metric-using country...
Welcome Jonny!
Smart. 4th generation and still behind the curve.
Absolutely Brilliant! I hope we get to see more reviews of this caliber.
Extremely well presented! Look forward to seeing more from you.
Jonny Smith! Awesome review!
always liked johnny. hope he will appear more often.
WOW! Just WOW! This one has to be the best car review I've ever seen! It answered all the questions I had even the ones that came to my mind on the fly. What it's like to drive, range, pricing, what is the forfour like compared to fortwo, which one does Jonny prefer. EVERYTHING! You can send this post to Jonny and say marvellous job!
great review, great personality, made me smile. Owned a smart in the past and was great even for the occasional motorway trip. I continue to be confounded by peoples range issues. This is perfect for the city where 100 miles is more than enough for a day or 3 . and charging whilst at work or in the evening is not an issue. This shows good thinking from Smart/Mercedes as ever to recognise reality rather than fantasy in terms of real world use.
Love the review
Johnny is a great add to the FC team, hope we see more of him, maybe he can keep Robert from becoming a cranky old guy ;-)
BRILLIANT PRESENTING! You need to team up with Robert full time. That was a perfect blend of a functional review and humour.
enjoyed your evaluation of these cars. thank you, Johnny Smith!
Fantastic, nothing more to say. Carry on good people
These seem like brilliant cars. I think Mercedes as all but given up on the whole Smart brand in the US. Thanks for the great review Jonny!
Exactly. The US consumer wants huge, flashy trash cars. (i.e. SUVs and "cross overs") How often do you drive out across a field? Then why do you need a "car" with 3ft ground clearance? Or 28ton cargo capacity?
Erm... isn't this precisely the generation of Smart cars that will be sold in the US from now on? Like, they literally announced that Smart would only sell electric cars in the States going forward. And these three (ForTwo, Convertible, ForFour) are the ones that start it off.
In Washington D.C. we have car2go with the old and new Smart, and they are lovely! It's awesome to sneak around big SUV/CUV in the city and make the city more fun to drive along.
If insurance in the U.S.A. wasn't a rip off I would buy a Smart 2 seat ED tomorrow!
3rd World Garage: The smart's draw isn't just about parking space. It's a perfect 2nd car for a typical US family, actually, especially for the folks in/near cities. As for economy, the EV's in another league at 122 MPG equivalent. I'm on my 3rd year with my smart electric as my only car and it's perfect. The electric gives me the cheapest driving I've ever done. In spite of the EPA range rating of 68 miles, I routinely run 85 mile drives. When I want to leave town, I get a rental.
The only downside to the smart electric is that they're so damn hard to get - there aren't enough in the 'States to meet demand. I lucked into mine in early 2015 only because a family ordered one and then their job moved them out of state before the car arrived. It was taking 6-8 months from order to delivery, and dealers couldn't order cars to put in a showroom.
Though I'd like a bit more range (maybe another 20 miles, actually) and a charger larger than the 3300W unit installed, I love the car. I guess I"m one of the 'exceptions.' ;)
Mercedes have made the smart only ED (or ev) in N-AM from now on. They have not given up on it, but i think it will be only promoted as a city car. Seems oke from my point.
Started the video thinking this could go wrong. Finished it rather impressed. Happy to see he will be back in the description, looking forward to it.
Yes! Great review and it's fantastic to see Jonny on Fully Charged!
nice he did a good job as a host really liked him i think he fits very well into fully charged
great camera work as always.
Always nice to see your work Johnny, thanks
Spot on Jonny! Enjoyed the informative review with just a dash of humor.
I think I speak for us all when I say we need more Jonny! Great to see him again.
Really enjoyed Jonnys review, from 😊 x fe in Sydney Oz
I think Robert and Jonny make a good tag team!
Thanks guys
It's great to have Johnny review the cars, as he's a motoring journalist and knows more about cars. Good move.
Great piece by Jonny! Really enjoyed watching it
Johnny is a real car reviewer pro. So easy to watch. Great guy. Very thorough.
Brilliant - now get Edd China (who's just dismissed himself from Wheeler Dealers) on board. Though obv he'll need to only work on cars with big interiors
Chris Bown I second that motion. Mr. China could work with proper presenters instead of that 🔔 end Mike.
Oh hell yes do a Fully Charged ICE conversion of a clapped out old MGB or something. I'd buy that for a dollar!
MGBs were clapped out from the factory. Hated my POS.
Haha! Exactly! But they still look damn good. MGB GT with a boot full of batteries? I'd like my boat with an extra slice of boat please.
Chris Bown A MX5 converted to electric by Ed China. one can dream...
An absolutely wonderful presentation! THANKS!
Ha ha ha, did he just say “Glory hole”? That’s gold. Very funny, quirky even. Thanks Johnny for the most enjoyable review I’ve seen in a long while. Quite a wait between episodes at the moment so I’m going back through older shows. Checking in daily for new releases. Suspense is killing me. Keep up the great work chaps.
Great choice as a second host. I may seriously consider the Patreon when I have spare cash
Well done Mr Smith. A very good review. ;~)
Welcome to FullyCharged, Johnny Smith! I like your style as a presenter. You are a hardcore electric mobility guy.
I really enjoyed this episode. A nice measured pace and thoroughly thorough. Cheers.
More of Johhny, please!
200 miles range and this would sell out.
or as is and £4000 cheaper
DigitalYojimbo then it would cost 10K more
@@balkanhajduk I think more like 3k more. Actually the main problem with the Smart ForTwo is not cost, but rather space for the batteries. They probably jammed in as many cells as they could as it is.
john bumptybump I think you probably right
I have one. You don't want to ride 100 miles in one. It's just a town car
Thanks Jonny, an excellent and thoroughly interesting review.
Great review, very enjoyable - much roomier inside than I expected too!
Johnny Smith!
Wow this is a really really good review! Will the 4-4 have room for larger battery capacity?
Tyrell Kehler no
Bummer. Thanks for the info.
brilliant review, episode was nicely done, great commentary, more car reviews from Jonny please.. enjoyed watching, thanks, cheers.
Johnny Smith! What a treat of a review. Hope you become a regular.
Now please bring on Vicki Butler-Henderson!
No, please don't! Vicki's a terrific gal, but she's also a pro racing driver; bringing her to Fully Charged would turn it into a lad's mag Clarkson era Top Gear, piss-about. Screaming starts, track days, max power, drift round corners, late braking, 0 - 60 times, constant emphasis on bhp, handling, performance, street cred, what's 'cool' ... No. Please, no. Keep Fully Charged as Kryten's idea of a sensible electric future algorithm.
Of course cars are part of that future, and they can be fun, too, but at the moment Fully Charged is like the old original BBC Top Gear - Raymond Spitfire Pilot, William Woollard, the nice chap with a beard, some occasional tips on adjusting ignition timing, no schoolboy-level mucking about, just useful, practical stuff. Too much emphasis on car performance would kill this brilliant UA-cam Channel stone dead. (IMHO) ;-)
No just dont......
I must say this bloke is marvelous, better than old rusty robert , Im only joking, I love you too rusty robert ;) , but could you have this young tasty bloke more often on this show please :)?
How do you know he's tasty?
Awesome review Johnny! Welcome to Fully Charged. Stay forever!
Great to see Johny back in the sattle on a quality show. I expect great things for the future.
"Power windows? Nah. Seat back iPad mount? Brilliant!" - BMW/Smart designers.
The front windows are powered.
Dynamic regen. How clever!!
All EV's should adopt that idea. Outdoes Tesla eh?
Drove the diesel version and he's absolutely right about the spaciousness. The first time I sat in one, the amount of space surprised me. All round, great car.
Now that's a proper car review! (Sorry Robert :-P) Welcome to Fully Charged Johhny! I love your style (especially agree with the eco button rant) and editing, camera and sound as usual, with every episode it gets more amazing!
cant wait for battery technology to get a lot better, then you could put a MUCH more powerful electric motor in this thing for roughly the same weight and have essentially a hot hatch of a smart car, like 0-60 in 5 seconds hot
Ryukachoo spark EV is pretty hot...400lbft of torque
Technically wasn't the Tesla Roadster a convertible? You could take off the roof.
Martin Soendergaard-Jensen It was limited run, minimal production. I think he's implying that it's the first full production car.
By that metric, everything Tesla has ever made is "limited run, minimal production".
What are you on about? Model S is mass produced...
The Tesla Roadster wasn't manufactured by Tesla, its a Lotus in disguise. Rebadged in San Jose, and e-drivetrain installed, but its certainly not "mass produced".
Thanks Jonny for playing on fully charged! It would be awesome if you could be a regular! Of course Robert is great but it's nice to have the occasional change of pace :)
Nicely presented. I have had my smart ED for 3.5yrs now, great work horse for going to work and back.
to 2017 make a car that can't be DC fast charged is really crappy!! or in Swedish "det är helt jävla åt helvete!"
or in german: total beschissen
Or in Norwegian: "Vi liker brunost"
Kallenator1988 you Norwegians and your humour :p. "we like brown cheese"...
Or in Welsh: Byddai'n well gen i fwyta caws drewllyd
Or in Chilean: "una huea' con patas"
Why oh why didn't they put CCS or Chademo on board? Come on, Mercedes.... The I-miev had that back in 2009, and the two cars are very very much alike in their target demographic. But the fact that in 8 years of EV progress, Smart/Mercedes have made a car that is *slower* to charge, and has virtually the same battery size is a weak showing. They've had a lot of chances to improve it over the years, and seem to have dropped the ball.
Might have been a cost decision I guess. They might argue that the car is just supposed to drive you round town anyways.
Wobbegong, City appartment dwellers are less likely to have an opportunity to charge at night compared to suburban one family house inhabitants with a garage. Lack of quick charging would be an impediment for sales.
LMLMD
No fast charge means it has a slower maximum charge speed. But it has a much faster standard charge, since the iMiEV was limited to around 3.5kW.
OriginalPiMan Rapid and regular charging arent related though, and the 7kw on boars the Smart is these days just bog standard for home charging. People expect that and a decent rapid DC facility as well. I am disappointed to say the least. Smart have shot themselves in the foot with the charging. Get the basics right before you try and be clever with radar guided regen and all that jazz.
I think Mercedes didn't put fast charging on purpose to sell internal combustion cars for those who need to drive long distance travels.
Yes, Jonny Smith did an excellent job. Thank you!
A breath of fresh air, in terms of presentation. Awesome.
Sad to see you couldn't find the time to hop out of your pyjamas...
nice video, though :-) thank you very much
Monkeyheadtpc That's what some people wear...
Sure, don't get me wrong, I'm not judging! I myself wear pyjamas every night...
How very dare you. That's a Barbour jumper that is!
I have no idea what a Barbour jumper is and I'm too lazy to Google it. It looked like a pajama top to me too.
Hmnn....had to explain to the wife what a "glory hole" is. After I stopped laughing harder than I should have
In case you find yourself on the spot again: a bukake is a Japanese biscuit.
lol
Mark Lawrence What's this little hole for? Hold up! What's poking out of it?! Holy crap! That's usually how it goes. I used to think it was for ventilation.
Why are you the only one who mentioned this? I don't think Jonny knows what a "glory hole" is.
Hahaha "Here is cargo space, it's where the stuff goes" 😂😂
Just love Johnny's comments 👍🏼
Nice to see a fresh face at Fully Charged, and Jonny did a very good review of the Smart.
Keep it up!
Women will always tell you what to do and where to go.
Can we lose the "miles" thing... I would prefer everything in Km or atleast subtitled in km!
And its fine that he is 6foot something but i have no clue how big that is!
What the hell is pound feed of tork??? And miles per hour?
Sorry but this really annoys me since only 300mln ppl of the 6bln use this weird measurements.
in England we use miles and feet.
And gruel for breakfast.
It's England we are talking about. They will never let go off the old.
You really made me laugh, so thank you. It's Pound-Feet of Torque, not that it matters in the Metric System world.
Pound-feed is the biggest clusterfuck ever.
From the US....great to see ya Jonny. Give our regards to Tiff, Vicki, and Jason.
Great Job Jonny, Very informative. It is a better made car than I had been previously thought.
