I have owned Smart cars since 2003 to present. I have bought the exact same 453 cabrio, its brilliant, but I decided on a petrol (gas) engine. Reason: unlimited range, just fill up and go, (around 48 MPG) and £13,500 instead of £20,000. I rushed out and bought one of the last petrol cars, before they stopped production in the French factory in 2019, and they only make electric versions now. And in 2022 they will make a new shaped Smart electric car in a new factory in China, at likely more cost and not that much better range. Electric cars may be the future, but for me, not at the moment, till price and range is sorted. Cheers Col.
Agreed, I have this exact car and say that while I love it, it's crazy how there isn't an option to pay more for a larger battery. I'm jealous that Tesla, Lucid, or Polestar cars get 4-5x as much range just because they're bigger. I love my smart and if I could modify it to fit an 80-100kWh battery inside of it, I absolutely would
I recently got one of these for cheap at an auction. Can't wait for it to arrive
sad this is going away in the US, don't know why Americans in New York, Chicago, L.A., Minnenapolis, Seattle etc, didn't buy these, it's perfect for all these cities
@TheSweetLife70 I agree.
Because the smarts are not known for being very reliable?
I know the question was about people in large cities, but from a long distance commuter perspective it won’t work. A 70 kilometer range isn’t very much. My personal commute is 52 miles (~82km) EACH WAY. I could see them being very useful in cities where the drives are short and you don’t put a lot of miles on them annually, but those of us in the hinterlands need longer range and long term reliability.
TheSweetLife70 Hey that’s actually very encouraging! I’m happy to hear someone is having a great relationship with the Smart. I would love one, but like I said the range is a huge problem. The gas ones seem to have either engine or tranny problems. I can find low mileage smarts near me very cheap because of this. 😕
@@m1cajah they are reliable (2nd generation)
I have the "normal " one and I do more than 100 miles. My last record is 176,5 Km. 108 miles.
The model you’re driving does have adjustable steering column. Comes with the ‘Comfort Package”
Excellent review 🚗⚡️ 💨
They're excellent to drive, I still own a diesel version, it's the cost and the range between charging which sadly stops me from buying one, the knowledge that I can't get to work and back on a single charge
Great little cars, I have a 451 electric and love it! Very fun to drive daily.
Bought a 451 electric drive for my daughter and she absolutely loves it.
What States Charge extra Fees/Charges for owning A Hybrid and/or Electric Vehicles like the state of West Virginia? And what can the Car companies like Toyota who have Factories in these States!
A bit bigger battery would made this car perfect with 22 kw charger
It's cute☺️ but i would buy the version with rear doors and get a sunroof and air con and H/C leather seats.
There's one with rear doors?
why are they so expensive? i bet much more people would buy small electric cars if they were more affordable!!
what is its maximum speed?
بدون زحمه كيف الحصول عليها بالعراق
SMART CARS ALL OVER🥰
What about one of those Citroen things?
How much is the price ?
£20,000, had this car been for £12,000, it would be totally worth it...
The Droid you can get this for about 16k with government grant and you do some haggling, that’s what they offered it me for
Boa tarde gostaria de saber o preço
Buy this new makes no sense, but buying a second hand one on the cheap might make sense depending on your situation (Used ones can be found for less then $6000). Or lease if it makes sense for your driving habits.
Wow they still fetch like £13k for a 2018 non cabrio EV in the UK
@@jamesx2703 If you can find a 2014 or so one around here (in the US) they're around $8000 right now, but later ones are closer to the price you quoted. The car I ended up, a 2016 Kia Soul EV+ with only about 17000 miles on it and one owner, I got for less than $13000 and I'm super happy with it.
Rear Parking sensors? 😂
Vicki P top good pragmatic review as ever - my wife's does 0-20 in under 1.5 secs leaves my 458 dead, away from lights !!
Ferrari.... 458 ? Or what car exactly 😂
This seems to be a marvelous electric Car ,which could have taken by Tata nano .If this could be hope fully ,situation would have been different in the world .Specially ambition of Ratan jee would not have been that disappointing for Nano .I will say it's the team Nano got drained .Love for the project was some where mislead .
Glad to see Smart ditching TOXIC ones 😉but needs more kW and a performance one would leve the ⛽☠️old TOXIC technology Mecs BEHIND. IT LOOKS COOL BUT PLEASE Mercedes make all your cars electric ditch the stink 👍😁🌎#buzzofftoxic
Actually even though the Kw are low, I have 2 videos showing how my little 451 electric smart car is faster than most cars. I even beat a turbocharged FRS up to 60mph
@@HandyDan thank you for feed back. I always like the Smartphone for 2 😇🌍
@@buzzofftoxicblog791 LOL SmartPhone for 2 LOL Yeah about the same size.
Do you survive in this car in case of a high speed frontal crash?
Top Gear smashed one of these things into a concrete wall at over 100kph and the test dummy would have easily survived.
No car crashing into a concrete wall at 100kmh will save it's occupants, but the Top Gear test showed the Smart is much better than you would think. It has a higher crash test rating than many other bigger cars.
You know what really annoys me about this question, it insinuates that being in a larger car would put you at a better chance of survival. When in reality there have been many road deaths in ANY size of car. If you drive like a fool or are hit by a fool. Then you are still at risk
I don't think most people would pay more than 12k USD for this car brand new.
The old shape electric Smart car did 90 miles on a full battery ,this looks like a step backwards.
No DC fast charging ☹️
New one has DC fast charging.
@@stevenlawrie7819 new one? As in 2020?
453 in Europe has DC fast charging I believe from 2016.
It's against the law to park nose in to the kerb, 80miles per charge 😂
That'd pay for a lot of bus fares (or even taxis) and a good bike and still leave ££££££££'s if you're only worried about getting around urban areas.
"very focussed on being a city car, so max speed of 81mph..." Not that foussed on being a city car then. The Citroen Ami has a max speed of under 30mph, much more sensible in a city
50 miles range that’s terrible!
I agree the range is limited. I own a model 451 electric and if I drive it like I stole it with A/C on I get 52 miles range. If I drive normal I get 65 miles range. If I drive like I'm on eggshells with no climate control on I get 87 miles.
But my daily commute 5 days a week is 30 miles so it makes perfect city sense. I've saved over $3,000 in gas
Over priced 70miles why bother
No ta.
I blame the price hike on the govt. Should have taken baby steps towards electrification.
Looks like a Coke can being kicked down a road lol so small!
Here you are Grandpa...Another ponced up mobility scooter for you a nanna to travel to the shops and back
The 70 mile range is totally crap, software is rubbish, there is nothing smart about this car, and it's far too small to be of any good...
Why this car is so expensive???? Not worth more than 5000$
Smart cars are terrible value
