Cool... I started back in the 70s when Miles moved into electric. There was a whole lot going on there that I wasn't aware of and as you know there was Jean Luc Ponty, along with Weather Report, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra (where he often contributed). You might want to look into the new wave of electronics with groups like Phaeleh (Fallen Light), Klimeks (Etenally Yours), Gidge (Huldra_Other version), and Pensees (Murky) are a few of my favorites. Give it a go - you never know...
Had a friend in the mid 70's who was a jazz nut. He convinced me to go with him to see Jean-Luc Ponty in Ann Arbor sometime around 1977. The show was great and I've been a fan ever since. Nobody was playing like this guy back then.

My dad took my sister to see JLP at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver BC, 1992. They had front row seats. And my sister, now 37, says she had a bad childhood!!! I only get to listen to the records with my dad while he reminisces about the blue violin and how well it was played. Hahaha, ask my sister about the Cocteau Twins concert she saw when she was a kid.
I was staying in Plainfield, New Jersey in the summer of 1978. I had a temporary green card. A housemate had a Jean Luc Ponty album of which my favourite track was "Mirage". I played it one last time, slipped my ruck sack on my back and hitch-hiked up route 22 to Vancouver, down to Los Angeles and on to El Paso, and back to New York via Memphis. A buddy of mine in 1975 introduced me to Jean-Luc-, and Imaginary Voyage! Ever since, now at 47 years the musical journey continues through today, August 15, 2022! I saw the Cosmic Messenger tour at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, October 10, 1978. That show became Jean Luc Ponty live, released in 1979! Ongoing greatness!
I love this guy. I can play almost all of his albums on the drum kit. Learned most of them over 20yrs ago and I still play them often. Wow Made me learn so much after that! Thanks Jean Luc and Rayford!
Saw them live multiple times; love all these lovely young players...and love the music-making they made...this is what standing the test of time means... beautiful now and then. So fabulous! This is how it's done kids. That's all, no hollering; no noise and for sure no nonsense.
This " ilk " of music is transcendent .... my Jean Luc experience goes back to mid 70 s at Melbourne s Festival hall with Mahavishnu Orchestra and then again with his own band......us old blokes appreciate a good reminisce..!
In the 70s.l went to see ELP...ajd the opening band was.Frank zappa....with JLP...on violin........l was very impressed....NY..years later.l saw him with his band in Montreal ...and later with his daughter playing piano...and on the violin....on a book store. In Philadelphia. Usa...fantastic
I remember seeing Jean-Luc Ponty years ago! What a great concert he put on. The lights thru his violín were so cool! I wild love to see him perform again.
First time I heard him was on a pbr radio station in Charlotte NC that played all jazz,in the 90's.i'm in Ecuador, now and it's 2020 it sounds as beautiful as ever.
JLP plays a superb solo on an Elton John (yes, really) album. The song is called Mellow and the track is on the Honky Château album. Fantastic, magical stuff.
I discovered JLP in high school during the 80s, mainly because I discovered Allan Holdsworth. I would come home and out Enigmatic Ocean on and be lost for hours, playing it over and over. I would cop lines from JL and AH both. I learned to play, to venture beyond rock and blues from this album. 50 now, and I'm an active composer and musician. I owe a great deal of where my muses led me to JLP and this album.
Wow! I was into JLP in the late ‘70s in college. I kind of forgot about him over the years. Just now I was in the car and heard an electric violin. I said “that sounds like JLP”. It wasn’t but when I got home I searched him on the internet. Saw a lot of videos. I distinctly remember “Mirage”. Brings back really good times and feelings. I’m going to get into him all over again!
I got to see Jean Luc Ponty a bunch of years ago. He was the opening act for Climax Blues Band out at Tanglewood. I remember it being amazing. I already had 5 of his albums. Afterwords, I picked up a copy of Rites of Strings (Ponty, Al Dimeola, and Stanly Clarke). I love each of them, but for some reason it took me years to warm up to that album.
I was there ... These were times when music was just at another level. These guys knew in what business they were. Masters like they are so few now.
Still... Try "Snarky Puppy", "Corey Wong", "The Fearless Flyers"...

Please do a drum cover for youtube, would love to see someone play Enigmatic Ocean Part 2!
My nephew who is actually older than me turned me on to it. Been hooked on it every since.
Amazing musicians! Long time listener to JLP since the late 70’s. Finally saw him in concert in 2010 and was blown away!
@Joanne we are here we are here!!!!lol
Saw them live multiple times; love all these lovely young players...and love the music-making they made...this is what standing the test of time means... beautiful now and then. So fabulous! This is how it's done kids. That's all, no hollering; no noise and for sure no nonsense.
This " ilk " of music is transcendent
.... my Jean Luc experience goes back to mid 70 s at Melbourne s Festival hall with Mahavishnu Orchestra and then again with his own band......us old blokes appreciate a good reminisce..!
Timeless genius. Love his music since I was a young girl.
In high school my friends were going to Judas Priest and Motley Crue. This is where I was. Thankfully.
Time has surely passed but I feel blessed I saw the JLP group in 1978, all stars done and in the making.
Allen Zavod RIP, saw him a few times with JLP, great keyboardist
My No 1 violist always he's da man Jean Luc Ponty....all day every day....yeah.....❤❤❤❤❤
It's really a great song , great vibe in it, unequalled!
And I took 3 friends to see him in Albany, NY in the 80's, (at my expense) and here I am at 70 years old, still loving this !.
Do !
Quand la vraie mélodie rend l'émotion un vrai plaisir d'écouter !!!
Después de 20 años extraviada mi colección hoy la encontré y las eh estado disfrutando a lo máximo.
