At the end of the session, Miles told Shorter to return tomorrow....and....."Bring that notebook!".

I may be wrong but about the best 3 to 5 minutes of music are of Wayne Shorter at the end of Joni Mitchell’s song Paprika Plains on Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter. It’s a long song not one of my favorites but those last few minutes are fantastic.
I spent a lot of time with the band this year - 1976 - and recorded them the following year. The band chose a path that would bring them tremendous success, with groundbreaking new music even breaking thru to the radio. Jaco brought a brand new sensibility to Weather Report, though Joe really struggled to accept his starring role. Truth is, and Joe knew it, Weather Report rocketed musically after 1976. It was a tumultuous time, even toxic backstage, but audiences were blissfully unaware.
I was introduced to the music of Weather Report in 1986 while stationed in Germany, and I was never the same again. It opened up a whole other world for me musically. Glen Bledsoe Saw this tour in Hartford, Bushnell Memorial Theater, April or May 1976. Phenomenal. My second time seeing them, the first was on the tour for the Mysterious Traveller lp, fall 1974, at the same venue, with the extraordinary Alphonso Johnson on fretless & piccolo basses. Shakti featuring John McLaughlin opened this 1976 show, also amazing (I love Indian instrumental music, too. And I would go anywhere to see Johnny Mac, electric or acoustic). All my ticket stubs are currently in a storage bin, but I doubt that it cost more than $7.50 for the best seats in the house. I was in one of them, somewhere in the first ten rows, center floor. And, this was my first time witnessing the genius of (drum roll, please, Alex) Mr. Jaco Pastorius. After this concert, I made SURE it wouldn't be the last time I saw him. His playing on the title track, and "Barbary Coast", really impressed me. One of the most purely musical concerts I've ever been to. Imagine, in the same night: McLaughlin, L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, and Jaco. He was one of those people who only needed one name! As I like to say, "They just don't make 'em like this anymore...". Ps, I'll never forget hearing the homage to Joe's deceased former bandleader, that was one of the new tunes: "Cannonball". They panned the train sound across the P.A. speakers in stereo to open & close the track (pun intended), just like the album. And it was freaking LOUD! Long live WR!!

Let's say the same about Paul Simon's last line-up... from Graceland, and from Rythm of the Saints... anything different? THIS IS MUSIC. NOT PREJUDICE.
Weather Report is one of the very few concerts I missed during the '70's. Not from lack of trying. I was attending live concerts every other weekend. Thankfully, UA-cam seems to have a lot of their live performances uploaded just for unlucky guys like me. Just wish they'd allowed people to videotape the acts back then. Today's generation's gonna miss out on a lot of different perspectives and techniques. If only record companies didn't have that stupid rule about "no cameras or videos allowed". Who knows how many great solo performances were missed because of it?!
Great video , to my eternal regret I missed seeing them when they played Portsmouth UK in 1982, I had moved down the coast to Plymouth UK two weeks earlier and was unable to attend.
I have a good friend who drums locally and have encouraged she watches and learns from this endurance of this performance as to what to expect. Said you got ta gain some stamina, cause you gonna learn how to sweat and lose some kilos / pounds (for USA.) at same time. Encourage all to try this at home.
The thing I like best about this line up is that even though Alex Acuna is behind the kit it's really two percussionist extraordinaire laying down the infectious grooves...Badrena and Acuna have a serious mental telepathy thing going on. As does the whole band. Serious stuff. ✌
I watched this performance on television one evening in 2008 not knowing who they were until the end credits. Soon I went to a jazz record store and purchased a lot of their albums. Soon after
Amazing! The versatile Manolo Badrena, blistering Alex Acuña, mesmerizing Wayne Shorter, very funky Joe Zawinul....I mean, has a better band ever existed? Thanks for sharing.
I LOVE this, it brings back so many memories. I saw a band last night with a percussionist who reminded me of a young Airto. He didn't know who he was...I hope he's getting an "education" today
Saw these guys in New York City. Great seats in a small venue. Didn’t know what to make of Jaco. Around the same time I was into JL Ponty and Return to forever…saw them all in the City.. so much great rock, fusion, and minimalist composers….Saw Steve Reich at Lincoln Center. But no one compares the one of the Greatest…..The Ramones
One of the finest soprano sax tones I’ve ever heard! Didier malherbe of Gong is still my favorite on that particular instrument. Even if they took a lot of inspiration from weather report during gongs “shamal” era, their earlier space rock fusion holds a special place in my heart.
Alan Haynes you don’t say!! His sound has always been one of those things that’s just in your head for the rest of your life for me. It’s very lovely to know the actual instrument that plays in my head very frequently.
MediaGrope Love Alphonso. Can you say "Cucumber Slumber"??!! Some of the slickest, funkiest, hippest fretless bass playing you'll hear from 1974. And I saw him do it live in Hartford, CT, with WR in October 1974 (how I acquired the ticket to this show is a whole 'nother story in itself. I posted it on another UA-cam thread some time ago. It could only have happened in the 1970s (okay, maybe in the 1960s as well, or at a Grateful Dead concert, but Weather Report wasn't even 'born' yet...).
The concerts WR made that summer were among the very BEST concert I ever attended in my hole life. @@sczhdtaivfesarcastic and ironic... but... I think the world is like that, all the time, to this very day... West is not the only choice...
Let's say the same about Paul Simon's last line-up... from Graceland, and from Rythm of the Saints... anything different? THIS IS MUSIC. NOT PREJUDICE.
He’s legacy is even greater than that
@@Texas3246 Usual Canadian BS from Canada which IS a highly racist country. Talk about oblivious white people.
Tecnica ritmica fiati tutto di altissimo livello i migliori degli anni 70 80

Fantastico. Dopo 48 anni suona ancora da Dio 😀😀😀.
🎉
Weather Report is one of the very few concerts I missed during the '70's. Not from lack of trying. I was attending live concerts every other weekend. Thankfully, UA-cam seems to have a lot of their live performances uploaded just for unlucky guys like me. Just wish they'd allowed people to videotape the acts back then. Today's generation's gonna miss out on a lot of different perspectives and techniques. If only record companies didn't have that stupid rule about "no cameras or videos allowed". Who knows how many great solo performances were missed because of it?!
Great video , to my eternal regret I missed seeing them when they played Portsmouth UK in 1982, I had moved down the coast to Plymouth UK two weeks earlier and was unable to attend.
juste magnifique !!! le plus grand groupe de jazz rock de tous les temps
This is really GOOD music!!
This is amazing. The fun that they're having is infectious.
The audience doesn't seem impressed though.
@@friedrichvolkmann Saw them in Paris, the music was so great that the public was really listening, so every body stay cool and concentrated.
So infectious I'm turning into a snail
@@reroman3950 i will say fascination and joy in the public.
@@Methilde Dw I was making a jojo reference
My favorite line-up of this ensemble. A buddy of mine had a hard time taking lessons Alex Acuna because of the language barrier.
I have a good friend who drums locally and have encouraged she watches and learns from this endurance of this performance as to what to expect. Said you got ta gain some stamina, cause you gonna learn how to sweat and lose some kilos / pounds (for USA.) at same time. Encourage all to try this at home.
Lady's and gentlemen the fabulous Wayne Shorter!!
ENORME 🤩
The thing I like best about this line up is that even though Alex Acuna is behind the kit it's really two percussionist extraordinaire laying down the infectious grooves...Badrena and Acuna have a serious mental telepathy thing going on. As does the whole band. Serious stuff. ✌
hi, have some youngerthan I who play some drumm, always encourage them to listen to Badrena and Acuna.
Thanks for posting these giants of then radical new music that still inspires!
I watched this performance on television one evening in 2008 not knowing who they were until the end credits. Soon I went to a jazz record store and purchased a lot of their albums.
Soon after
Rip my fav saxman!
i didn't know the "miles davis angle" but its really nice and a legacy.
Miles was a musical phenomenon that just kept on giving. So many great musicians cut their teeth with him.
Tal was an adorable youngster, who wowed us with her performance.❤😊
I loved every note and like others was shocked when it ended. Nothing like this ever again.
Tremendo baterista Alex Acuña!
El Inca!
Amazing! The versatile Manolo Badrena, blistering Alex Acuña, mesmerizing Wayne Shorter, very funky Joe Zawinul....I mean, has a better band ever existed? Thanks for sharing.
And playing some of the best fusion compositions ever. Certainly my favourite fusion album.
And who could forget Jaco
I LOVE this, it brings back so many memories. I saw a band last night with a percussionist who reminded me of a young Airto. He didn't know who he was...I hope he's getting an "education" today
talk about on another level! this is an incredible live performance, with every band member just killing it. so beautiful
ALEX ACUNA is the man WHO made very pricious! Others as well .. but i love the sound he adds ..
I always love Alex on the kit with WT stuff. !

hes dynamite
He's a monster.
@@kennylyon1934 Tough, Tough, Tough drummer!!
Tengo 63 años de edad y me siento muy feliz de escuchar esta música magistral. Gracias maestros.
One of the finest soprano sax tones I’ve ever heard! Didier malherbe of Gong is still my favorite on that particular instrument. Even if they took a lot of inspiration from weather report during gongs “shamal” era, their earlier space rock fusion holds a special place in my heart.
Alan Haynes awesome! I play guitar not sax so all that info is new to me, which is awesome!!! It really is an amazing sound that I love.
Alan Haynes you don’t say!! His sound has always been one of those things that’s just in your head for the rest of your life for me. It’s very lovely to know the actual instrument that plays in my head very frequently.

This music is so great thanks for sharing 🎉🎊👍👏💯
This is great...the percussion and drums kill it!
As always, thank you Araki
I have watched this about 10 times over the last month. What a vibe! I love how Alex towels himself off at the end...job well done:)
Gli unici a gestire e suonare jazz elettrico ad alto livello
Mamma mia che band amico mio, assolutamente stratosferici
I saw them more than once...But I'll always remember seeing them first in Youngstown, Ohio 1975!!
I'm 48and ashamed I have never heard this before. Enlightened because now I have.
This is magic! I met Alfonso Johnson tonight which made me look this up again. I must buy the DVD. Thank you for releasing something so special
MediaGrope I forgot to ask you: who was he playing with when you saw him?
greatest song of all time.
The bands most legendary performance no doubt. Such an infectious groove.
Birdland is also very good. One of a kind band.
Yes these dudes where the Badasses of jazz fusion. But lets not forget Return to Forever Wow what another band of Geniuses.
The four horsemen were
Wheater report
Return ti forever
Mahavishnu orchestra
The mothers of invention
Zenit of jazz fusion
Music is ageless!
Man was Alejandro Acuna young in this vid. Then again, we all were in 1976. Rest In Peace Wayne, Josef and Jaco.
This is the real music!
🎼❤️❤️❤️❤️❣️🎼
The concerts WR made that summer were among the very BEST concert I ever attended in my hole life. I am forever grateful I tracked the band over most of Europe and - having only a very low budget - was allowed entrance as the fan I am and remain. These guys are (were) WONDERFUL people. I shall never ever forget... Much love and a biiig THANK YOU, Joe, Wayne, Jaco, Alex and Manolo. I still recall every single minute!
i started listening to weather report, mahavishnu, return to forever, etc. back in 1971, when i was an air force member, stationed at a god forsaken outpost (malmstrom afb) in montana, being from texas the shock of the freezing weather, but i found these albums at the base store, man they got me thru the lone nites, i'd fall asleep to them. got bless their talent. what has happen to the music of today?
Dude I was in the Army a at a sh*t stain called Camp Casey Korea, with my PX brought Pioneer system, Weather Report and Spyro Gyra...I still have the Albums.
It’s still here, check out Snarky Puppy, Scary Pockets or Earth Radio crazy jazz fusion still exists
