  • Released in 2019 the Lumix GX880 is the successor of the GX800/850.
    In many ways the GX880 resembles its predecessor the GX800/850.
    In this episode I'll review it and compare it to the GX800/850 and answer the question if it is worth upgrading from the GX800/850 to the GX880.
    I will be review the photography and video specs, especially as the camera comes with 4k video.

    I just love how reviewers suggest that anything less than 300 shots on a single battery is relatively poor, remember pre-digital film cameras with a maximum of 36 exposures per film, a good bit worse with medium format.

    • @PaulTakesPhotos
      @PaulTakesPhotos  3 роки тому +3

      Shooting with Film is a very different beast :) as for 300 shots on digital camera. If you film a bit and take pictures those batteries drain quickly .
      Additionally when shooting with Film I shoot with a different mind set. Scaricty whilst on digital camera it is different. But I do get your point

    • @GeoLamb2974
      @GeoLamb2974 3 роки тому

      @@PaulTakesPhotos I was late to the party digital party Paul, shooting weddings with a Mamiya RZ67 and a pile of film backs that only allowed ten frames per roll and as a backup system relied on a Bronica ETRSi 645 and film backs (not that the Mamiya ever let me down) that allowed sixteen frames so yes it was very definitely a different mind set from digital and if you throw in the in house processing and the time that took so much different again. I have to say that by comparison to those days we are spoiled rotten and I certainly wouldn't want to go back. I think a valid point to make is battery size, I have both models of GM cameras that uses the same battery as the GX880 and is about half the thickness of say the battery for the GX8 so carrying a spare is no hassle. Keep up the good work!

      Great that you enjoyed the review. As for the camera. The form factor of the camera and the interchangable lens make it an option to consider from a photography perspective. From videography perspective i would be careful to consider it, mainly because of 4k recording limit and overheating when filming (which happens quickly). If you consider lumix the G7 (same price range) is a good bit bulkier alternative. Are you a native lumix user? If so purely from the 4k video perspective i would recommend a bulkier camera.
      Additionally the colour science of the smaller lumix cameras (Gx880 and G100) is very vivid and high on the reds.
      Long answer here but lumix has released affordable cameras over 2019 and 2020 but they come with a little catch 22

    Hi Paul! I came across your video because im thinking of buying a camera to make timelapses of my art. Im a student and this price seems fair. Do you have any recommendations? Or do you recommend this one? Thank you :)

    • @PaulTakesPhotos
      @PaulTakesPhotos  4 роки тому +6

      Hi Veronica! Thank you for your question.
      If you are on a budget of roughly 400-500 euro there are many cameras out there that have timelapse functionality. Depending on what type of art you do (big canvas, street art, drawings, sculpture etc) the lens becomes more important I'd say the GX880 is small and portable and has the option to change lenses. I'd say the GX880 is very suitable for it.
      Trick with timelapses is that you need to understand the technical side of your camera (any camera), which is easy to master as for the lens, you probably need to consider a more wide angle lens.
      Mind you when it comes to panasonic lenses and cameras the auto focus isn't that good which can result to "focus hunting" (which that subjects can be blurred)
      When it comes to video panasonic and sony are pretty darn good most of the times supporting 4k and always FHD.
      In my view the following cameras are worth considering
      - GX880
      - Sony a5100, Sony a6000
      - Canon M100
      One important thing you need to take into consideration is the lcd screen and if you can either flip it open to the side or like the GX880 flip vertically.
      It is also good to consider second hand cameras (not refurbished)
      I will probably do a little episode on your question :)
      Again thank you for the question

    Hi thanks for the video. I have 2 quick questions :
    - Is there overheating issues when filming long videos ? I want to film an interview of 1 hour to 1h30. Do you think it's possible (in HD of course because I think in 4k it would be a mess).
    - There is a recording limit of 30min. What happens after. I have to restart the recording or it's done automatically ?
    Is the recording divided into multiple small files or it's 1 file for each 30 min ?

    • @PaulTakesPhotos
      @PaulTakesPhotos  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Xi,
      I am not sure you should consider this camera if you want shoot a 90 minute film.
      It is designed for social media and in 4k has a cap of 5 mins until it stops. In HD I can't tell if you if the feature has been extended for longer shooting or that it has a gb limit before it opens a new file recording your footage.
      At the price point of 500 euro I would suggest you buy a used GH4 or G7 or G80.
      The GX880 was created to shoot film and has body Stabilization but I dont think it was created for film making.
      As for overheating, I dont recall it being an issue but then again I Returned the camera as I wasnt happy with it
      Hope my response is of use.

    How does this compare to the gf9 and gf8? Also is this camera capable of slow motion?

    • @PaulTakesPhotos
      @PaulTakesPhotos  4 роки тому

      Thanks for your question. The biggest difference between the 8 and the 9 is that the 9 allows you to shoot 4k (8 not) and that the 9 allows micro sd. Other than that they are pretty much near identical. 9 also has a slightly higher screen resolution but not much.
      As for the slow motion, the 8 doesn't support it and judging by the fps in HD the 9 I don't think it does support.

      4k recoding limit. It shuts of and you have to push the button again
      Battery life. 250 shots pica but filming in 4k would require additional batteries.
      Overheating. The camera overheats quicky. Benefit is interchangeable lenses.
      I would recommend dji osmo pocket. No recording limit. 4k at 60fps. Check out ny review on it..

      A bit late but for anyone else make sure silent mode is off in the menu as this enables electronic shutter as well as switches off flash which probably would not function anyhow. My Olympus bodies also will not flash with electronic shutter set. Great little camera and better results for the money paid than any of the 1" compacts. Edit: Another point is the cursor dial on these cameras is a weakness generally without a spare dial to fall back on. I have a Casio ZR5100 which was the last of the 1/1.7" cameras and that has failed jumping in any which way direction but luckily the lens dial works. I have also had another camera which needed repairing with dial failure. I would personally recommend using the rear touch screen where possible rather than rolling the dial to ensure longevity. Especially important as these sort of cameras are really under threat and possibly irreplaceable and irepairable. Getting a camera with 2 flexibly programable rotating dials or one with a touch screen as backup makes sense now.
