    I shoot mostly Fuji & Nikon gear. We were taking a trip to Ireland and I wanted to go light so I bought an LX100 II for the trip. Have to say I was very impressed with the LX100 II. I would have liked to have some longer glass but it wasn’t critical. On returning I found a deal on a GX85 so I picked it up. These two small cameras will now be my core travel kit solution.
    You have a great channel and just would like to say thanks for the quality content.

    Good comparison and one of special interest to me because I was deciding between a GX85 and LX100 6 months ago. I had a G85 with several lenses including the Lumix 15, 20, 25 and 42.5mm primes so I bought a GX85 body and have been very happy. I think the small M43 format cameras are well served by the small primes. Zooming with your feet is easy.

    I chose an original LX100 as a complement to my extensive MFT kit mainly because of 1) the EVF & handling, and 2) the much brighter lens. The LX100's lens is two full stops brighter than the GX850's 12-32 kit zoom, and this lets me shoot in dim light without carrying the brighter primes I'd need for the GX850. For me, the LX100 is simply a more versatile 1-lens/1-body solution for those times when I might encounter dim environments and I don't want to carry, say, my GX9 and a handful of lenses. Makes a great famcam.

    Really helpful comparison for me because it confirms I was right adding a GX85 to my G85 as a pocketable camera. IBIS is essential for me to use all my m4/3 lenses and the EVF is my natural way of shooting. Pancakes, prime and zoom make the camera pocketable and even the Oly 45mm fits in my coat and opens up short telephoto territory. I have kwondered about small bodies and compact fixed lens Panasonic’s, but this detailed comparison really settles the issue. Pen F? I got my G85 for about US $300 refurbished, but effectively new. The Pen F was US$1000 on Amazon and well over that used from Japan on EBay. The G85 is fast becoming my favourite camera. Good channel.

    I think I'd be down for the LX100 II if it had dust sealing. Part of my reason for shifting towards M43 is that my past fixed lens compact cameras has serious dust problems with no way to clean them myself.

    I use the LX10 for my pocket camera. I’m now using the LX100 m2 as my all purpose camera. I choose it over my Olympus and LUMIX MFT cameras because I love the immediate access to shutter speed and aperture. These are the most important controls to me. As far as the interchangeable lenses go I find I seldom use them. The moderate zoom is all I need, and the LX100 is faster than the 12-32 kit lens, which Is my main lens on the MFT cameras.

    I used to have a LX5 which was a great little camera for use when hiking, backpacking and camping, until one day when powering on, the lens stopped moving half way out of the rest position. The camera was now useless, but most annoying was that an excellent sharp lens, being fixed to the body was also of no further use. I then decided to never buy another fixed-lens camera. A used GF1 was purchased along with the 12-32mm lens and this was a great substitute for the LX5. I've since replaced the GF1 with a GX80, using the same 12-32mm lens and this is a great combination for its intended use. I've since added the tiny 35-100mm lens

    I'd love the size of GX880, but I don't like that there is no full manual controls for video shooting. I have used GM1 previously and now I'm actively shooting with GM5, and I really treasure the ability to do video exposure manually + the tiny form factor, it was like I carry nothing extra inside my bag!
    I struggle to love the LX100. I tried the mark 1 version, really wanted to like it, but it was just not for me. The concept is brilliant, I admit.

    This GX880 is being sold in Brazil with an excellent price with the name GF10L.
    One question: the LX100m2 is rather expensive but I read somewhere that just an MFT lens that behaves like the one the LX100 has is more expensive than the whole camera. They mentioned something about aperture blades that makes the LX really good. Lenses can be moved from body to body but the LX is great. I have an old LX7 that I used a lot and it takes great photos. Since I subscribed I have been making an effort to see your whole catalog of videos.. The GX850 (US) was the first M4/3 camera I ever used and fell
    in love with the touch screen controls ,,(I had been shooting with Sony NEX and a6XXX before), I actually bought the 15MM Pana-Leica before I even owned a camera to fit. I did find that not having a EVF was a problem. Had I a chance to see an LX100 I might have gone that way, but I live outside of a metro area so there was no full dealer to see all the models offered. The controls on the LX would have convinced me as well. The GX8 and the 15mm is just about as close to having my old Leica 35mm gear in digital form as I can probably get.. Thanks for the great content.

    If only the LX had a flippy screen it would be a great vlogging camera. The manual controls are nearly perfect. So much to like about that camera and its lens. But the lack of flippy screen on the LX means that the GX becomes a great little B camera. Sometimes it is a big advantage to have a camera that makes you look like an amateurish tourist. You can take it more places, and people tend to behave more naturally around a phone or "amateur" camera than they do around a more "serious" looking camera. There have been many times when people see my G9 and say "ooohhh, professional" whereas people normally ignore what they see as an amateur camera. Both the GX and LX are great for this, but price and selfie screen makes the GX the better choice for me.

    Hi Matt, thanks for this video. I just bought the GX880. I know that this is a 2-year old video, and the cameras are not yours. But, do you have an idea how low the shutter speed would be if you use the GX880 with the Leica 15mm f1.7? Considering that both are not stabilized.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  2 роки тому +1

    I have both cameras. I’ve always been puzzled by the notion that the LX100m2 has a “real” multi aspect ratio sensor, when in fact, every aspect ratio on the LX is a crop from the full frame. Not to mention the fact that most cameras these days have multiple aspect ratios available. You just have to go into the menu system to change it. It was a great idea to compare these two cameras. I sometimes can’t choose which one to take with me.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  2 роки тому

      Thanks. You are right, that it's always a crop, but what else could it be? The sensor can't change its size in real time. However, the Lumix approach is a bit different from the rest. Please see this video ua-cam.com/video/dosD8NCyuMw/v-deo.html for more info.

      @@mattisulanto I think I understand what you’re saying about the different aspect ratios, and I agree that making the lens smaller, yet still fast, was the motivator. And I like it. I think it’s smart. But, it sounds odd to me to say that 16:9 or 3:2 are not crops. They are. So is 4:3 and 1:1. But, it’s a petty quibble. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for taking the time to comment. 😁👍

      @michaeld5888 Рік тому

      It was just a way of Panasonic marketing the overall crop of the 4/3 sensor to keep the lens small to seem like a virtue. The price of the GX850 wins it for me and the dust problems of the Mk I and Panasonic in general with their fixed lens cameras is always a worry. My last attempt to buy a Panasonic little zoom had a great blob on the sensor out of the box. The GX880 is a great little camera at the price and far safer I think in terms of easily keeping that sensor clean as a routine task rather than a complete strip down. I would like an LX100 II which seems a great camera but I would want plenty of cash spare to justify it. I hope they keep these affordable little MFT cameras going now they are apparently dumping compacts. Very sad to see the wretched smartphone extinguishing these compacts completely.

    The 2019 GX880 is not the 2017 GX800/GX850, not quite. It's Panasonic using a random password generator for naming things again. The GF-series name is still used in Asia. Why? Does their marketing department need slapping with a wet fish?
    The GF are/were the no-EVF bodies, and no Body-IS. These little cameras appear to be the successors to the GM-series.
    The GX880 is the GF10/GF90-(Japan) whereas the GX800/GX850 is the GF9-(Japan)
    The GX880 is the slightly newer facelift model with a little finger grip added.

    So is the LX100II lens actually a 12 mm - 37 mm that gives you 24-75 due to 2x crop? Or is it a 24-75 mm that gives you 48 mm - 150 mm due to the 2X crop factor? All that shows on Amazon is that it is 24 mm-75 mm.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 роки тому +1

      As it says on the lens, it's 10.5-34mm and that equals to about 24-75mm FF camera lens. The crop factor is a bit more than 2, because the LX100II uses 17Mp of the 20Mp sensor.

    What this math leaves out is a consideration of the lens. You don't even have to think of it as a choice between two cameras. Think of LX100ii as simply buying a lens. What zoom with that range is that fast? And how much does it cost? And is it compact? And does it allow near macro capabilities? For street photography documentary work, the range and the speed and the size are ideal? What have you got to match that? Do that math.

      The LX100II uses only 17Mp area of the sensor, because of the multi aspect ratio feature. The new 20Mp sensor is better than the old 16Mp, but it's not like day and night😀

    Both are great camera's but in a year or two's time the lx100ii will have dropped in value as well as the gx880 but with the money saved if you picked up another lens say the 15.17 you'd average out better. Lenses don't lose their value as much as bodies do and if you upgrade bodies eventually you'll still have that one great lens!

    No view finder, no deal, unless it’s a GRiii, 😬
    “The gx is a system camera which makes it an interchangeable lens camera”, therefore making it USELESS as a compact camera. If you’re buying a compact camera for its small size, then let it be small. Who would want to start changing lenses on a small walk about camera, that’s what we have our FF cameras for.

    • @UrdnotAkongo
      @UrdnotAkongo 6 місяців тому

      Buying a GX880 with equivalent focal range would be just as expensive, maybe even more. More expensive, takes up more space, and weighs way more than the LX100. First you'd need the Pana 12-35 f2.8 ($400). Next you'd need to match the LX100's 12mm f1.7, the closest equivalent is Pana 15mm f1.7 ($500). Oops you're already at $900 buddy, and that's just the 2 lenses not including cost of the body. LX100 also has macro, so you'd need a third macro lens. At the end of the day, you're paying way more than 950, you'd need to have a backpack to carry all those lenses, and would be 3x heavier.
