    I only need one reason to get this Lumix: Micro Four Thirds. The fact that I can get that sensor in a compact digital camera is definitely a big win for Panasonic.

    I have bought the LX100 II a few days and after having taken a series of test shots, I must say I am impressed with the image quality. So far I have been using Nikon gear, but I wanted a compact camera for "traveling light" and still have a camera that can deliver good images. I think with the LX100II I have found what I was looking for. A compact camera that lets me use settings as I want them to be and that delivers good quality images. The images are sharp with good details, have a good dynamic range and the colours are very accurate. Out of your 5 reasons to get the LX100II I would pick the image quality as my number 1.

    One of the best features, in my opinion, is the lens. There is no MFT interchangeable equivalent. But, then again it doesn’t have to cover the entire sensor on the LX100. Which leads me to believe that is the real reason for not having the 4:3 ratio cover the entire sensor and then having other ratios be a crop from there. It allows for a very compact, fast lens. In effect you have to accept a small compromise in 4:3 resolution even though it has a regular 4:3 sensor. But, it’s still a very tempting camera to me, and I already have four MFT cameras and a bunch of lenses! Damn you, Panasonic. Thanks for the video, Mr. Sulanto. 🙂👏

    Wow! The LX100ii is an impressive little camera. It would be perfect for most of what I shoot. Except for low angle shots or when I need my 9mm lens for very wide FOV. For a camera this small, I can forgive it for not having an external mic jack. It's a lovely camera with a very lovely lens!
    You did a great review as always. However, I'd like some see reviews with the review video shot with the camera being reviewed so we can see and hear a live demonstration of each camera's video and audio, or at least part of the review shot with model being reviewed.

    P.S. - The Venus Laowa 9mm F2.8 is on of my favorite lenses that I use on my EM10ii for architecture. I need and love that lens, which is the only reason I want to upgrade to GX9 instead of LX100ii.
    That said, I still resent Panasonic omitting mic jack from GX9. That omission greatly lessons the camera to the point where I'm not sure I want to buy it.
    You should review the Venus Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero D rectilinear lens sometime. On M43 it really has almost zero distortion. It takes amazingly good UWA photos. It's my favorite lens for architecture in doors and out.

    Panasonic's GX range finder m4/3 cameras are also compact. They also have the advantage that the lenses can be removed to allow for easy cleaning of the sensors with canned air or a quality brush. Within a year of normal "real world" use, almost any camera will get sensor dust, but the problem is acute if a telescoping lens sucks in dirty air every time it is activated and the camera has been toted in pockets and bags that have lint and carry other stuff. To clean dust from an LX100 i or ii sensor is not an easy operation.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  3 роки тому +2

      According to Lensrentals the zoom vacuum suck is (almost) an urban legend. Some lenses suck dust easier than others, but it has little to do with zooming. Here is a quote from their blog: "People assume that zoom lenses with extending barrels will “pump dust.” They do to some extent, but the dustiest lenses we see are actually some primes and short range zooms."
      You can read the whole piece here: www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/08/the-apocalypse-of-lens-dust/

    Hi Matti originally I was planning to buy the LX100 m2 especially with all the good reviews on youtube. My main points were semi pocketable, 4k video, with a large senor and bight lens. Then I went shopping and looked at some of the prices and reviews . Found out there is a serious dust issue with the sensors. People will start noticing it after 1 yr using the camera. Panasonic said it is normal for dust to get into cameras but others said it is a design fault. I saw some pictures with dark spots caused by the dust. I was very disappointed after read the problem since I wanted it. Have you noticed any dust yet ?
    I am now waiting for the replacement for Panasonic GX9 to see what are the price and spec. The replacement is rumored to be out soon. Was thinking about putting the kit pancake lens 12-35 3.5-5.6 with the replacement GX9 . You did a review of that lens.

      I'm happy with the range of the zoom - it covers the vast bulk of the focal lengths that you need on a carry everywhere camera. The improvement that I wish had been included (but wasn't) is to be able to hide the LCD screen so it isn't damaged when not in use. I rarely use the LCD screen - mostly just menu-diving - so I'm happy for it to be off-show & protected most of the time.
      I might have been tempted by that change; I'll keep using my LX100 v1 for now.

  • @JezLerman
    @JezLerman 5 років тому +1

    Hi Matti, thank you for posting this review. I’m in the market - nearly bought the Mark 1 version but it is renowned for attracting dust on the sensor (Google it, plenty to read). Evidently Panasonic added a new gasket or two or something similar to the Mark ii to stop the dust from entering whenever the lens is zoomed in and out and thrown into the bag, but I digress. My question to you is how responsive is the LX100 Mark ii camera? I shoot weddings and event photojournalism, I need a premium pocketable camera that is reliable and responsive, no shutter lag what so ever. I live in the Middle East where there’s no such etiquette as being able to handle a range of unopened new kit in the shop before purchase. What say you, if I leave the LX100 Mark ii turned on, compose and shoot….will the thing focus and fire near instantaneously, or will I miss the shot due to shutter lag? By the way, I really enjoyed your magnificent photographs. Subscribed, hit the bell and liked. Your turn :-)

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 років тому +1

      Thanks, Jeremy. Based on my experience the LX100II is a great camera and I've had no issues with any kind of lag. It's probably the best handling compact camera at the moment and I can highly recommend it based on my experience. I've had no problem with the battery life, but the battery could be a bit bigger. But, I have to say that we all have slightly different shooting techniques and it's possible that you don't like the same camera that I like. It's always very difficult to recommend a camera to someone else. Hope this helps.

    • @JezLerman

      I'm a seasoned Lumix FZ200 user, a kind of cut down version of their G series with an all in one zoom bottled onto it. I love it. Handling and ergonomics are excellent. Point being I think Lumix know what they're doing in the ergonomics dept and I expect the LX100 Mark 2 to fit just as nicely in my hand. The LX3 did. Cheers for the fast response.

    • @mirthakoch
      @mirthakoch 3 роки тому

      The LX100 ii is not any more sealed than the LX100 i. There is no official Panasonic document that acknowledges sensor dust as a "known issue" at all, and there are only anonymous, unsubstantiated allegations that the LX100 ii is somehow different in that regard. My LX100 i got sensor dust after a year of moderate use and being toted in a bag or pocket. A used LX100 ii, with low shutter count, acquired sensor dust in less time than that. A vacuum cleaner nozzle did not help. DIY sensor cleaning requires total disassembly in a dust-free setting. Not easy: most household air has dust, pollen, and lint. The DIY-er's hands exude oils and human breath carries all kinds of sticky aerosols. Reassembly is a very delicate matter too.

    How is this cameras light gathering capabilities compared to say a the G9? I know lenses play a big part, but with a similar lens, would you say it was equal (or near equal) in lower light or would you say it was somewhat less effective? My current compacts are a 1" sensor and 1/2.3, so m43 would be a jump in that respect. Later in the year I am considering an upgrade (as my compacts are showing their age a little bit), so any insights would be useful.

    This has become my every day camera even though I have three MFT system cameras and a slew of medium format film cameras. The reasons are in line with what you are saying, especially the quality and speed of the lens and the physical (dial and ring) controls. The zoom range covers 99% of my needs. I can always use one of my MFT cameras if I need something different. The one thing missing, though, is a tilt screen, though I find if I hold the camera out from my body at waist level I can get a sense for what the screen is showing. Normally I prefer and use the viewfinder. Thanks for the review. As always, very helpful.
