Your First Camera: 6 Key Factors to Keep in Mind
Great Video :) and great shots mate :) I love that wide 65:24 ratio & I’m a big fan of Jeff Bridges Photography too!!! I actually did an assessment on him as part of my photography diploma :) widest I can go on my m43 lumix cameras is 16:9 that I enjoy a lot too… I am planning to get the s5mkii x myself soon - so I’ll certainly experiment with that feature a lot :) Thanks again & great video :)
😂 I like the last two words.. I agree is not all about the gear.. I watched and followed your YT because Im planning to buy new handy camera.
XT1 x 35mm f/1.4 is the greatest combo of all time 👍
Liked the S9 for its size and all those "Lumix Goodied," however I am forced to conclude its not for me, sense it comes without viewfinder and hot shoe. Your images are cool in this video and threads. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation.
First things first: thank you for the positive feedback on the video. Highly 👍. As for the lack of viewfinder. I do own a few cams without one, so that is not an issue, the lack of optical viewfinders (50mm, 85mm) is more of an issue, so I use my phone via the remote control on the Lumix labs app.. the cold shoe I am with you. That said it is the only "affordable" that has the 65;24 aspect ratio which is such an awesome shooting experience
I sold a canon rp to buy a fuji x-t30ii because of the colours the camera can produce without editing (jpg’s) i was considering the x-t50 but im not a fan of the film sim dial i prefer the dials as they were. As far as sensors go the crop sensor on my camera is no where near as good as the full frame sensor of my old canon, as someone mentioned in the comments bigger sensor more light
It is indeed a crop sensor and compared to full frame you'll notice some differences (low light, iso handling etc). Personally I think the XT30II is a great entry level camera
No viewfinder and no hot shoe is a deal-breaker for me, I need at least one of those.
A hotshoe would be welcome. If I have to shoot a challenging scene I just connect Lumix labs remote control and I can use it as a monitor EVF. But the S5II would be ideal if it weren't that big and bulky
...I have the -III and it excels at everything I ask it to do...bingo !!!
@@Ronster3455 it is a great camera. Especially for hiking, events you name it
I don’t know any Leica camera that has the X-pan format in it. For sure not the Leica SL-2S. Which one are you referring to?
@@caroslavvehiculovic2171 it was a mistake in my research.
I had a D-LUX 8 too, but just for less than two months. Then I returned it to the dealer, because of some of the issues, you mentioned. I got full refund, no trouble here and bought in November a brand new SL2s for just under €2,800 or 21,000 DKK. Best buy ever and a superb supplement to my M240 and M240P. Thanks for sharing and keep on rolling!
Sadly I am not the only one who feels Dlux 8 being a dud. Just a question on the SL2s, doesn't that camera have the same specs as the Lumix S5(II)?
but then the auto focus with 65x24 goes back to contrast only, such a shame!
@@ivideocouk to be honest I only missed one or two shots. The jpeg obviously is less mb's but I enjoy the shooting experience and for me photography is many misses and a few hits, over time less misses and more hits.
i heard the RX line was discontinued, so I picked up an RX100VII before they're sold out
I am not sure if it is, but the writing is on the wall
inherited this from my dad after he passed. I don’t care if it’s not an M or Q, it still makes me want to take it everywhere just in case and reignited my interest in shooting photos. pair that with the Fotos app and everything just works
It is indeed an easy to pick up camera i am finding out.
🔥🔥🔥🔥Summary.🔥🔥🔥🔥 #### Overview - The video focused on the speaker's experiences with digital x-panning photography using the Lumix S9 camera during a trip to London. - Emphasis was placed on the unique and fulfilling photography experience rather than technical aspects of the camera. #### Key Points Discussed 1. **Introduction to Digital X-Panning** - Definition of x-panning: a wide aspect ratio of 65 by 24. - The speaker's motivation for exploring x-panning was influenced by Jeff Bridges, a Hollywood actor known for his photography. 2. **Camera Selection Process** - Initial interest in x-pan cameras, but challenges with cost and maintenance led to exploring digital alternatives. - Comparison of various cameras: - Hasselblad: Too expensive and bulky. - Leica: High cost for limited benefits. - Lumix S9: Chosen for its aspect ratio and affordability. 3. **Photography Experience in London** - The speaker noted a different composition experience with the Lumix S9, which lacks a viewfinder. - Enjoyed the wider framing and the learning curve associated with it. - Mentioned the challenge of switching back to standard aspect ratios after using the wide format.
Im really worried, I’m still using my 2011 X10 and while it is quirky it’s still the best tactile experience like the old film cameras. I want to upgrade but the twisty flippy screens, or lack of EVF and no pop up flash!! on the latest models worries me. I really want the film simulations of the newer models but at what expense for such a higher price??? I have no idea which camera to get to use with primes?
I hear you. Personally id go for the xt30 or XT30II. Put the 27mm on it and you're okay. Fixed lens cameras I'd consider the x70 or x100t.
@ Thank you for reply :) Since I’ve commented I did indeed purchase the X-T30 ii and coupled it with the 35mm f2 to get me started as the 18-55mm or 27mm aren’t in stock. I’ll hunt the 27mm down after a month of playing around. I realised it was probably now or never to get hold of the smaller model with features I want while I can.
Awesome info...I've been eyeing an s9 to compliment my S5ii. Will this aspect ratio apply to video footage shot on the body as well?
@@no9images that is a good question. I am testing the camera more on video this week. So ill have to come back on that one.
Bro says bulky (me with my Canon eos 60d)
😂
2:13 Its 11 mins if you put a stronger SD Card in. Perfect time for Vloging but not for anyone else and this hm... it ment to be for vlogers so second point also refuted
The camera was meant for vloggers and failed in terms of marketing. As a stills camera it is excellent
@PaulTakesPhotos You Said it. "Meant for vloggers" but you talking about her Like a camera forbeveryone so its normal you recoment Not to buy it so what Else can i say excapt the hole Point of your Video ist meaningless when you dont see the camera for what it is. Just a good vloging camera who is also good for short Videos ore unboxings? I think you put the camera in to a Test with unfair requirements. Like you buy a Maschine that automaticly Pumps up Balls but you want it to make Coffee. Its cant and it isnt Made for that. Like a Mini Cooper isnt made for a Roadtrip but why you bring one to it?
You did that video 4 Years ago and you talkedion your first Point like 4k was absolut standard but it wasnt and it mostly isnt today so first Point: refuted
Indeed it was 4 yrs ago and the camera was marketed as a vlogging camera..... And it turned out to be a great stills camera.
Historically with the D-LUX since the "100" series, .. there is a blue cast to the photos, and apparently this is continuing. As for me, if this Panisonic -Leica would add a tilt screen i would not care about the blue-tinted photos, as even the Q-series has a green tint.
Colour sciences are unique to every camera manufacturer. I do agree the cast and tendencies to shift either direction is fine. The auto WB on the Dlux 8 seems to randomly act out.
Video on this camera works very well. I had no time to set it up properly but did manage to capture this video...ua-cam.com/video/-2Bi0n4IUl0/v-deo.html
The video indeed is excellent on this camera.
Great Video
Thank you
Ive got the 25mm f1.7, was very cheap. The 20mm was more expensive. I'm using it mostly for video (GX9 - see my channel). I have the 14mm-140 original lens but its a bit bulky for this camera. I'm torn between now buying either the 14-45mm pancake or the 2nd edition of the 14mm-140mm which is much smaller than original one I have. Great video
I used to own the 25mm , little bit bigger than the pancakes. 14-140 is a great little lens.
I can’t get enough of this lens. The TTArtisan 50mm f1.2 is crazy sharp in the center, and that f1.2 aperture is perfect for low light.
Great to hear you're enjoying it
I really wanted to love the D-LUX 8 as I'm looking for am upgrade to my old Ricoh GR. Sadly the 8 isn't looking a likely contender. Such a shame.
@@tomfenn7149 best fixed lens camera with a zoom lens remains Lumix LX100II best value for money
What is the grip you have on it?
I think it is linked in the description. Can't remember the actual brand and name
XT1 is my favorite camera. Love it.
A classic
No Flippy screen as well? Pass
I have had my CL since 2019 and have yet to find a camera to replace it with. The images are astonishing. One of the reasons is that when paired with a Tl lens those lenses will resolve to the same resolution as a full frame M10 on the smaller APSC sensor. If you can get a TL lens, then do. The zoom is okay but not in the same league as the other TL lenses. Not selling it anytime soon :)
It has taken me by surprise in terms of the entire experience. I do have to get my hands on the 23mm, used prices are just a little rich for my budget at the moment. Stay tuned for more updates
The Leica Q series is ABSOLUTELY one of the BEST CAMERAS EVER! I agree the Video feature is NOT necessary at all, i have NEVER EVEN used It on my Q3! I wish LEICA would do away with that feature and drop the price say 500-1,000 USD. Thank You for this video.
Fully agree, stay tuned, new episode on the Q coming up
I know it’s a little pricey, but if you can afford it, it’s definitely worth it!! Just got my hands on a used Leica Q and I take back every negative comment I ever made about Leica cameras before owning one myself😅😂🫶🏿
I went form the X2 to the Q as well. Stay tuned new episode coming on the Leica Q in 2025
@ looking forward to hearing your perspective on it!
Love the I-series lenses. I have the 20, 24, 35, and 65mm f2 variants for my Sony A7Cii. Sold the 90mm to try out their 105mm macro.
They are great lenses, I also use them on my Leica CL
Couldn’t agree more!
Sigma Fp and Fp L has this mode aswell and is even a smaller camera body.
Youre the second person bringing it my attention :) I have added the cams to my "to try camera," list
I had a xpan but sold it off years ago. Been chasing a digital version ever since. It's just too difficult, even with full frame pov and then crop it post, it just don't quite replicate it. The other option is to use anamorphic lens but that's quite a lot bulkier and just not the same anymore.
Than the only option is to re-buy an Xpan-
I think our School end of year photos were this format
Oh that is cool :)
Just don’t understand why you need an s9, just to avoid post processing? ( post crop) Great pictures!
@@andresgonzalezcerda7635 you're not the first one bringing up the point. For me the feature mattered and having it straight out of camera, combined with the LUTs available and seems workflow of the Lumix Labs app make it a great experience to be out there. That said, you could do it in post, but that would be a challenge, as in my experience the frame and composition at the time of shooting play are important part of getting it right (or wrong)
Respectfully, I have multiple Leica cameras, and I have never once had to take my battery out to restart a camera for any reason period. I have also never had an issue with a single camera waking up from sleep mode. I respect your experiences, I’ve just never had any of them and I shoot with a Leica daily. I own about a dozen cameras that I would use to produce more serious photos, but they are bigger and heavier, so I would never keep them on me daily. I have smaller mirrorless Canon cameras, and they are not nearly as portable as the Leica D Lux series. I believe the issue is having unrealistic expectations for the cameras you own, regardless of which camera it is. My smaller Leicas have been extremely impactful for me because they help me slow down to find the beauty in the everyday world around me. Since I have a camera on me daily, which has fully manual features that make photography much more rewarding than taking a picture with a phone, I want to spend more time taking photos. As a result, I pace myself, and I’m more intentional about capturing the beauty in the world every single day. I run a national business, which has its weight to it. The cameras have been a blessing and removed a lot of that weight, while also helping me create lifelong memories in the most beautiful way possible.
The Dlux 8 out of all the Leicas I own (x2, CL Digital, TL, Q and M240) was the biggest disappointment as the issues it has, should and can easily be fixed. Leica chose not to. I enjoy Leica cameras, the DLux 8 simply isn't up to the standard. Which seems a broader issue. The M11 suffers from jitters with quite a few users, so does the Q3 and Q3-43. Problem is that it is inconsistent. Which indicates other issues within Leica manufacturing
@ I guess I’m just favored because my D Lux 7 has no issues at all. I’m grateful for that. I hate that these are yours and others experience.
@@PaulTakesPhotos today I had to take my battery out, for the first time ever. The first person I thought about was you. How did you get to my camera and make it do that lol.
As a street photographer, turning on the camera and taking three or four seconds to set is a joke! Most the time you’ll miss the shot. Next camera!
@@simon359 indeed so returned and don't regret it
Street and travel? As a 75mm (practically) manual lens, I would consider this one completely inappropriate for both. You will lose A LOT of shots.
If shoot on f/11 and zone mark you will be surprised
Your review made me realize that I do not use use as many features as there are available on my camera. It literally made me tear up that I forgot about the aspect ratio past 3:2 and 4:3. Thank you 🙏.
I never used to look at it, 3:2 all the way. Nowadays 1:1 and recently 65:24 and also 2:1 (next on the list)
Cant you just use gaffers tape on the screen to get the ratio and crop in post instead of spending a lot on a camera that doesn't even have a viewfinder
@@mgman6000 use gaffer tape on screen? If I change the aspect ratio to 16:9 or 4:3 I have to reapply the gaffer tape :) on. A serious note, the price is high, agree, the digital alternatives are way more expensive. The 65:24 aspect ratio is the shooting experience and framing. With the Lumix lab app it is on my phone in seconds, no editing in post ready to share, store and print. So it is the joy of shooting and adjusting your composition to match the frame and the automated workflow. A viewfinder is welcome if I shoot with the 85mm. The ergonomics is at times an issue. I do find it worth the money, but I understand the sceptics. I used to be one when they released it
@PaulTakesPhotos I'm not skeptical, but I wonder why spend all that money for what basically is a crop .
@mgman6000 shooting experience and joy of it. Simple like that :)
@PaulTakesPhotos I agree with that I shoot film for the experience I had 50 years ago but can't you have the same experience by simply covering the screen? I'm sure someone could come up with an easily removable mask that would accomplish the same thing
I like pan. Works well with landscape.
@@BruunMedia Rene! My man. Didn't know you shoot Xpan-. Which camera/lens combo do you use?
Very cool experiment with the aspect ratio restriction. I can imagine how using an ultra wide angle with that aspect ratio (like the 30mm and 40mm lenses on the original film XPan, giving ultra wide angles of view dude to the frame size) would be an art of constant "hit or miss" in and of itself :D
It is indeed, with the 24mm I found relatively easy. I experimented last night with the 85mm, that might just be a bit ambitious, for the moment. On the 50mm, just started, I'll start shooting the coming weeks. Follow me on threats and would appreciate your feedback and input
@PaulTakesPhotos with a 24mm lens you had a similar angle as the Xpan would with the 40mm lens, would love to see how you'd approach using something similar to the Xapan 30mm lens, so about 17mm on FF. That could be some wild stuff! I'm not on Threads yet, but might give it a go just to follow your process :D
@KNURKonesur your preaching to the parish here, I am considering the sigma 17mm f/4 at a later stage. Maybe I should contact Sigma if they can sent one over :) I will starting posting on the lenses I use in the coming months 😉
@@PaulTakesPhotos good thinking, cant hurt to try! :)
I bought s5 for same reason
Excellent a like minded spirit! Which lens do you use? You landscape, documentary?
@PaulTakesPhotos i have 20-60 and 50/1.8 on l mount. Mostly documentary.
@@jalakanen I own both of them too and the 85mm and I kinda document my life and spirit of time
2 yrs ago I bought my Xpan, the experience and photos I have gotten out of it have been nothing short of amazing. I will keep it forever and if it breaks I will get it repaired or buy another one. I love the panoramic aspect ratio and and enjoy the challage it gives me to get a photo right. I do also have the Panasonic S9 and think it is fantastic camera. I have yet to try the wide Xpan ratio on it though but will be trying it soon. For digital Xpan I have been using my Sony A7RV 60mp with a Zeiss Batis 18mm and the results have been perfect. I just setup the grid lines on it to conform with the 65:24 format and have been very satisfied with my results.
Seems you are very experienced. I actually didn't know that you could framelines on the Sony A7RV. Don't mind me asking, do you print by any chance?
@@PaulTakesPhotosyou can set frame line both for viewing and jpeg output. But it's not a custom one, so the widest you can do is 2.35:1 which is what cinema uses
And I see Sigma 18-50 F2.8 on your list of lenses, how that works with S9 ? I’ve same lens in Fuji XH2 and love the size
It is the L mount version (also for my Leica CL). It works perfectly, gives me a light weight option :)
How will this be different from Anamorphic lens ?
@@sohrubjoshi5189The 65:24 aspect ratio refers to the shape of the final image and can be achieved by cropping or using specific camera sensors, whereas an anamorphic lens optically compresses the image horizontally, requiring de-squeezing to achieve wide aspect ratios like 2.39:1 or similar. Anamorphic lenses create unique characteristics, such as oval bokeh, horizontal lens flares, and a wider field of view compared to spherical lenses of the same focal length. Shooting in 65:24 with a spherical lens doesn’t produce these effects; instead, it offers a straightforward wide frame without anamorphic artifacts. Anamorphic maintains full vertical resolution, while cropping to 65:24 can result in a loss of resolution. The choice depends on whether the goal is a purely wide format or the distinctive cinematic look of anamorphic. So you are not wrong
@@PaulTakesPhotos Great explanation, Paul. I'm not very into super wide aspect ratios or anamorphic lenses, but I do have a Moment anamorphic lens for iPhone that can be fun to use. Maybe in the new year I'll keep it around to play with a little more often.
Subscribed!! Ty going to do that now with my lumix s9
@@KelsJune thanks Kells, so much fun. Which lens are you using?
@@PaulTakesPhotos sigma 45mm f2.8 and l mount 20-60mm. I have noticed I have to frequently reset the settings to get the 65:24 format with the sigma lens
I got a used GFX 50R from my local photography shop around 2020 ish. One of the reasons was because I was interested in xpan, but the risk of something going wrong and the difficulty of getting them repaired, and the inconvenience of film (vs digital) put me off. So I sought out a digital equivalent and landed at the 50R. I have a selection of cameras, and I find the 50R to be the one I enjoy the most. I don’t really under stand why this is though.
Sometimes a camera just agrees with you and sometimes they really don't (x100v doesn't agree with me for instance)
@@PaulTakesPhotos I’ve never even held anything from the x100 range, or XF in general. I’d just wish I could understand what it is about the 50R that I find so appealing. I’ve got other cameras here, like Sony A7Riii, A7Siii, A9iii, Leica M10-D, and yet, if I’m going out to shoot something relatively static, like Landscapes, it’s the 50R I go to each time. Of course, if I’m shooting sport, wildlife or action, then I’m grabbing the Sony’s, but over 70% of the time, I’m using the 50R, you are right, something just clicks with me using that camera.
I don't understand why a 22mm is "read" as a 27? Does this happen only in the 65:24 crop mode?
Yeah if you shoot in the 65:24 ratio and have the sigma 24mm on, you'll see on the screen 27mm (not in your exif data). It is frameline crop on the sensor.
If you calculate the diagonal for both aspect ratios you will see the diagonal of full 3:2 crop is 1.127 times larger than when using 65:24. Multiply 24mm by that ratio and you’ll end up with 27mm.
