2:26 makes my eyes hurt
Yeti Bluesky reds are tough on digital sensors...
Does anyone know why there are no more real camera reviews???
Watched this on my 2XL/128 that arrived yesterday, and I can't wait to start taking pictures this weekend. Another great review 👍
Have fun shooting :-D
will you make a review update after android 8.1 update? when they will activate special chip that serves faster hdr process
We'll likely follow up the Pixel after update, but not right away.
Pixel visual core is the name
Great review, Juan. @7:42 we actually got to walk through the "spooky tunnel". Nice.
+JuanBagnell 1 dumb question; if you stick a 3.5mm Rode mic into the dongle does that mean you'll get a stereo audio recording while shooting a video?
yes, this is right
amazing and real review....!!!!! other youtubers have just exaggerated the camera review..!!
Solid unbiased video. Glad to see some honest coverage and comparison of the HDR both ON/OFF.
Can you switch the front and the back camera when you are making a video?
I was literally searching daily for the past week to see your review and finally!!!
mathnofun ☺️
Which one should i buy for the portrait blur effect the iPhone 8plus or the google 2 pixel xl?
The most technical and most accurate video ive seen so far. As always...you are the JUAN!
Sancho Lawan ☺️
Great camera review like always Juan! It's good to know that the UA-cam community can trust that you'll deliver a fantastic review!
TheNickle ☺️
can we do anything to have manual control in camera for the phone?
Is it possible to implement portrait mode feature in older smartphones with PDAF camera?
why my pixel 2 can't work front facing portrait? and portrait work when i shot people face not anytime. i mean cant shot portrait for object.
Can one use the google camera app and other paid camera third party apps on other android phones with similar results.
Do you think portrait mode and manual mode are incompatible? I'm basically asking if LG can incorporate portrait mode into their awesome camera software...
wait, am i able to do the light trail effect on the V30???
Will there be another follow up review for when 8.1 drops, enabling the ICP?
Very comprehensive review. Thanks!!
Sudip Chatterjee you're very welcome.
0:35 when you are not in the giveway winners🤣
why does my pixel 2 doesn't have lens blurr. my pixel 1 does have a lens blurr option.
I haven't had an opportunity to play with the camera too much, but damn, is it improved.
I thought you never go in that "Creepy Tunnel"
Azeez rarely do... It's creepy...
nice to know that you read comments
u should clean it
Which is better the note 8 or the pixel xl 2?
Which one is better in sunset and sunrise ?? Note 8 or pixel 2 xl??
What about the extra processor that will allow third apps use HDR +?
The whole point of cloud backup is so you can take the full resolution pictures off of the Google photos website... This is all I use now, haven't plugged in my pixel 2 to my laptop once
Jacob Chouinard Indeed, that is true. Although sometimes, one just wants to get the photos off the phone without needing to wait for it to upload, then download
D13H4RD2L1V3 times 10GB of samples...
JuanBagnell I feel ya. My 5Mbps connecting would cry
Funnily enough, I installed a version of the same Camera of this phone on mi Galaxy S8 and the photos are pretty much the same! Crazy how much Software can help to improve photos, specially talking about the Front camera (BETTER PORTRAIT MODE BY A LANDSLIDE and WAY better selfie camera in general withouth the smoothering filters Samsung has integrated)
Great detailed review!
But does it have a headphone jack?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Pixel 2/2 XL has a smaller sensor then the first Pixel/Pixel XL right?
Audi Ahmad i dont think so?
How will the camera perform once third party apps are able to take advantage of googles hdr + in the upcoming Oreo update? I think being able to use that hdr with a raw camera app like muse cam will make the pixel an even better camera than it already is!
Big fan of your real camera review. Waiting for the nokia 8 real camera review
LOVE your reviews!
:-)
Despite how old this model is now, especially when later models having multiple back cameras. I just got a Pixel 2 because of its compatibility with Filmic Pro as far the Camera2 API phones go.
Sweet. Love my Note 8 but I"m getting the smaller pixel 2 for when I don't feel like carrying around a big phone. Best of both worlds really and the Pixel 2 is only costing me $250 bucks with trade-in of old Pixel XL
Ok so yes, it IS crazy good; but I'm wondering something about the video recording. Look at 07:10 when walking and showing the stabilization; what in the world is going on with the trees? What I mean is, look at the way the branches sway in the wind, almost like stop-motion O.o
Why would you record in stereo on a phone, what's the point?
It makes perfect sense for it to be mono.
BTW the portrait mode /blur is a hardware feature. While software plays a big part. hardware plays just as much, they used dual pixels on the physical sensor. So the google pixel actually takes two pictures then uses software to map it out making the portrait mode. Its not purely software
Will you be doing a follow up review once Google activate the pixel visual core (soc) on Oreo 8.1.
iar1980 We will be following up on Pixel coverage.
Please make a video on how to take those beautiful light streak photos......... I really can't get it properly right with my OP3
ace 1121 iso 100 shutter speed 20 seconds auto focus [ ∞ ]
And a tripod or similar
AWESOME666ist Awesome.... Thanks man
ace 1121 I also have the OP3. I've never tried for those photos.
ace 1121 you need a tripod and increase the shutter speed
You left out a bit about how the pixel 2 shoots it's HDR+ images or how it is doing that noise reduction in dark shots. It's taking multiple images and blending them in a smarter way than all other cameras out there, you can even enable motion to see a little movie of all the shots that were blended. This image stacking is what is doing a lot of the noise control as well, instead of the splotchy, muddy, soft, and still noisy yet somehow oversharpened pictures you'll get from the V30 or any Samsung, you get a surprisingly detailed shot for the conditions. I wonder if many third party apps will work on this camera because of the way it was designed.
Charles Talhelm Not yet. When the Visual Core is enabled in 8.1, then third party apps can take advantage
I went to bestbuy today to look at the Google Pixel 2 bezels that many bloggers complaint about and I really love those bezels they aren’t that big and actually gives you something to hold into not like the Samsung galaxy s8. I think you guys need to clarify things and make it clear that those bezels actually fit nice on the small Google Pixel 2 cause that’s actually hurting their sales I almost buy an iPhone if it wasn’t because I decided to take a peak at the real thing.
So is a mate 10 real camera review coming ? I notice the mate 10 has more sharpening and green looks desaturated
Ayyee! Shout out to the valley!
I am between Google pixel 2 and asus zenfone 5,i know that pixel 2 have better cpu,but i need a phone purely for photos and videos at day and night because i travel a lot and i need the best between those 2,any suggestions???
Once the visual core engine is unlocked with 8.1 ... You can effectively use third party apps to create HDR+ images.. which sounds promising.. so manual controls aren't absent dat way.
I'd love to watch this video but for some reason it's blank. I can hear the audio, no video... Not sure it's a problem with my computer either as I just watched another video okay... weird!
Just paused the video to write this comment, Excellent Review as always! I'm a big fan of your camera reviews.
My Instant Search glad you enjoyed it :-)
JuanBagnell 🔥🤗
"Unibrow sensor bar" - LMAO! :-)
Mambutu O'Malley it's totally a unibrow 😂
Using the moment's lens attachment will fix all those zoom photos.
gonna get PIXEL 2 SOON,Working Hard Right Now :")
Only one word to describe your videos Juan, QUALITY
RagingTiger Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Maybe Google does mono audio recording since Apple is doing it as well.
Zach Inverse there is a lot of apple "inspiration" here.
“Where the pixel XLs” I C what u did there ;D
This Pixel 2 RC Review just made me a lot more excited for the V30. I mean look at those shots at 3:54 , the V30 produces a pleasant and realistic image, while the Pixel 2 has pumped the contrast way too high and has a slightly unpleasant bokeh in comparison. And at 5:18 again the V30's result looks more accurate and clear, white balance on point, and as you stated, the Pixel 2 did feel a bit soft, although that might just be a testament to the lens quality on the former.
I'm not looking to upgrade yet, but if i had to choose a phone to replace my trusty G4, it would be the V30, it's just so good. Great work again, Juan, you just do not disappoint.
That's because in those photos HDR is off... with HDR on, the results are way better. That's why everyone recommends to keep HDR always on on Pixel 2 (or 2 XL).
V30 with Pixel camera app? Maybe the best of both worlds? ;-)
Am I the only one who comes to Juan's videos just for this one song he always plays while reviewing phones? No? Just me?
Not to mention the lack of slow mo when copying videos from the DCIM folder
There is an update coming out (Oreo 8.1) that will supposedly make the camera on the pixel 2 and pixel 2 xl even better.
"8.1 is eventually supposed to activate the hidden Pixel Visual Core system-on-a-chip. The image processor is built into both new Pixel phones, yet remains dormant. Google says it'll activate it in the coming months to make image processing smoother."
so i would also like to see what it will look like after the update comes out.
I currently have an Iphone and im thinking about trying out android again.
Go for it, you won't be disappointed!
I really didn't learn anything new from this video. Was expecting a dive into features.
Taking night shots the manual/ pro mode is *needed*
Thank you so much for pointing out the mono audio recording. The more people speak up, the better. Who wants their lifetime memories in mono?
mosincredible I do not.
I think you need to merge Real Camera and Real Audio review. Not only for the sake of views, but also because both of them are integrated, especially in videos aspect. You dont need to do a super long sentences for the audio section, audiophiles just need to hear it's capability to play lossless files and what's the character; warm/bright, bass heavy, etc.
「 f a d l i 」 We thought about that, but that video would be CRAZY long...
Would like to ask if the pixel xl will have a seperate real cam review?
Ellis Tiu nope
For those interested, 5:45 are seed pods, not leaves.
Honestly, on my Pixel, I hardly ever tap the screen to focus. The autofocus is great and it seems to get the exposure right more often if you just let it do its thing rather than choosing. It can definitely be useful in some situations to tap to focus, but not doing it doesn't mean you don't know what you're doing (like you're suggesting) lol.
SamJPC I didn't "suggest" anything other than there are different solutions for different preferences.
hey Juan, will you do an XZ1 or XZ1 compact in-depth camera review? please
deadworms unfortunately I don't think we'll get to one any time soon. Have the Mate next on my list.
JuanBagnell noooooo
Go to Google photos (.com) and then select the photos you want and click download
UNDECIDED NAME now do that for 10GB worth of samples.
+pocketnow haven't even watched it yet but I expect the shady night shot by the tunnel with the street light, as with every camera review. PS how about using a side by side comparison of all those shots over the years.
Most honest review ... stabilization is best on one plus
Hey, Juan, for those of us that want to stick with the Pixel like, but would like some manual controls sometimes, any suggested camera apps??
Also, great work, as Always
Open Camera is generally preferred by many for its features but its UI design might not be the most pleasing.
I used Footej as it keeps a style similar to Google’s app but has manual ISO, shutter speed and focus.
Victor Hernandez yup. I like open camera if you want RAW and manual controls. I also like cinema 4k for video.
Any recommendations on 3rd party manual camera apps? Does picture quality take a big hit?
Obviously I'd like a camera app with a quick, efficient interface so all major settings are available from the viewfinder.
Each app will have its own post processing, so "quality" will be very subjective. Hoping soon that oreo 8.1 will launch and then developers should be able to better use Google's camera API and hardware.
JuanBagnell Yeah, but because the app isn't designed for a specific device and it doesn't have the same direct control over the hardware as maybe the stock app has the results (at least for auto mode) are usually worse.
What's this about the Camera API? Is there a new version being released with finer control?
Wanna see which is better. HDR+ by Google vs HDR Boost by HTC U11
It does record in stereo I've recorded concerts.
Amazing review and phone #KanpurRider 👍
visiting the local dispensary I see ;) 5:14
sicdedworm09 just passing by...
😉
If I had to choose only 3 tech reviewers to watch...only 3 to subscribe to....it would no doubt be marques brownlee...Zack.(Jerry rig everything) and Mr bagnell...not necessarily in that order...Juan is amazing at breaking down the the specs and nails every review...keep up the great work...I always look forward to hearing your reviews Mr bagnell.
Mark Gorzka Thats some amazing high praise :-)
Google uses HDR and good processing to give it close to if not the best single camera "auto mode"
Of course once you go manual others take the lead.
Even though it's actual lens is far from the best in specs.
LG, Samsung, Apple, and others would do well to copy and improve on googles default HDR lite auto mode, especially with low light pictures.
The thing I love about my pixel and pixel 2 xl is the Google photos backup if my auto mode shot ain't right I just take another :p and another until it's right lol. I'm a manual mode nood. I know other phones if you took the time could take better photos with manual mode but that's just not my thing. Also in the last year I have definitely took some photos on my pixel xl 1 that's you just don't have time to wip out manual mode and that's where the point and shoot of the pixels are awesome!
That's why I am ultimately excited by the Pixel even if the phone really isn't for me.
What's your list for top camera in 2017?
The best smarthphone camera (overall), and the Visual Core is not even turned on yet. I wonder how much of a difference it will make when that thing is enabled.
Awesome review!
But you need to stop smiling on those selfies.
Other than that probably one of the best camera reviews .
35: what's up with that facial expression? Lol
i knowww 🤣
When we will see another Real Camera review Juan? :(
He left pocketnow
Does the pixel 2 take time to shoot like gcam in other phones?
no
White light looks orange on mine
Looks like it is not quite there for night shooting, despite being the best. Will stick with my cameras for now.
This phone country variant ??????
I got my XL yesterday, and I already returned it. It's a wonderful phone and I believe that Google will fix this eventually, but, for right now now if you want a pixel 2, either get the smaller one or wait for the fix.
My main problem with the Display was the Graininess, it was horrible, even at ful brightness, heck, it made it better the lower I had the brightness. It's an excellent phone, Google just needs to either replace the display and recall all the Pixel 2 XLs, or refund a part of the retail price. My two cents, hope this helps people wondering.
any crackin noise?????
Sucks that they stopped shipping the Pixel 2 XL for the moment. I really want to give it a whirl.
Mr. Carzo how do you know they stopped shipping? I was wondering why I haven't gotten mine yet.
Hi please do a camera comparison between pixel 1 and pixel 2 😀
It's actually a 1/2.55" sensor, not 1/2.6"
Please do a video with Google Pixel 2 video vs Iphone 8 video vs LG V30 video in all modes 4k, 1080p and slow mo... will wait for your response...
Note Series fan and going to upgrade to note 9 from note 8 but nothing excel then pixel 2 in cameras even new Note 9....
Galaxy got amazing pic but they should work on low light photos
Turn hdr on for your selfies, you need it! Lol
+juanbagnell please make a real audio review of the mate 10... Love your reviews always
mohammad aziz Will do :-) Stay tuned.
JuanBagnell Thank you.. appreciate the reply..
