The sleight of hand involved is loading/unloading the pencil lead (uncomplicated when the only person you need to fool doesn't know they're involved in a magic routine), and making sure you keep your hand moving instead of statically holding the clipboard in the same place the number was written.
i see you just HAD to stretch it past 10 minutes. just came back 5 months later. had no idea this whole thread happened here until i came to rewatch this.
mind field was, for a lack of a better term, a surreal experience for me. Everything about it was high quality, intuitive, and at the same time many of the subject of these episodes are still so mysterious for all of us, others having real life applications. This, this is what i absolutely love about science
Placebos are amazing, the only time I know of experiencing one was a year or so ago. I had recently started playing trumpet, and lost one of mouthpieces. My dad found says mouthpiece after a few months, and I thought it was smaller than my current one (smaller mouthpieces make higher notes easier.) I had been having trouble with high notes for a while, but as soon as I used that mouthpiece, I was able to play multiple notes higher. It wasn't until a month or two later that I finally realized the mouthpiece was exactly the same size as my other one, and I had placeboed myself.
Yeah this is totally a thing. Most people refer to is as psyching yourself out (if it is a negative) or being "in the zone" when it is a positive. It isnt that hard to relate to and then apply it to medical issues, etc. As much as I hate pseudo sciencey things, I also personally know many people that have been legitimately helped by them because of placebo, so it is hard for to criticize things like that.
In this case I don't know if really is a placebo effect. I used to play the french horn and something similar happened to me. The mouth piece that I lost were larger than the new one and it should be easier to reach high notes. But when I found my old one, it was easier. There where two important factors: the old one was better fabricated, was a Paxman, and my muscles were more used to it. Maybe if I trained more with the new one maybe this wouldn't be the case anymore.
Crazy thing about actualizing placebos sometimes is that you can just call that a coincidence and was because certain timing in your life for all different reasons. Like you could have just lost a touch and got better at playing the high notes again after positive alignments in ur life
When Nathan said "I don't know why I don't listen, maybe because I have problems" i started crying bc I know exactly how he feels. It feels like you are a burden and a problem for things you just can't stop

1:20:58 im so glad you mentioned this!! I have to admit throughout a lot of these mind field episodes that involve external participants I was thinking how much geography and ability to commit time would be selecting for a particular type of person.
Vsauce: "Wow, your skin condition went away!" Girl: "Yup! All thanks to your machine!" Vsauce: "Actually, it never did anything. It was off. You healed all by yourself!" Girl: "Oh..." **Nervously scratches arm**
I do always wonder if any of those kids came across a Michael meme, remembered his face, found mind field, saw the episode and thought "what the fuck? My life is a lie!"
This is great stuff. Not sure why some people focus on the "deception" aspect given that the researchers are up front with what they are doing. And the fact there are positive impacts on lives of the young people, not a bad outcome. Hope they are still doing well.
@@isetmfriendsofire I haven't went to my subscriptions tab in forever, I always find content on the suggested page, the first page when I go into YT app Lol..
This placebo research is so important. I feel it is an uncomfortable topic within medicine and just life in general which we often choose to ignore. Better to confront reality and integrate it into our lives than pretend it doesn't exist.

@Viktor Birkeland I've been playing the game since season 3, if I remember correctly, and I've just become numb to the toxicity, If someone starts running their mouth, I mute them, and focus on the game. And I rarely read, or participate in, post-game shit-talking (friendly chat is fine, but rarely happens). I play games to have fun and being toxic defeats that purpose, in my opinion
Michael: " the game I played was League of Legends" My brain: "oh shit, doesn't that game have a stereotypically young audience? I wonder if he got shit-talked by preteens." Michael: " I have never been bullied so much in my life"

As a drug addict, I really wish Michael would make a video about addiction, and the science of it. It'd possibly bring light to the fact that we don't really choose to be addicts.
The first time you took the drug you chose to be an addict. Now stop playing the victim card and blaming other innocent people for telling you what you are.
@@thedislikebutton1907 You don't have the slightest clue what is going on in other people's lives. I myself am not an addict anymore but I used to be one a few years ago due to some major hardships in life and you of all people should know that we didn't choose for it to be this way. It takes a lot of self control to get over drug addiction and some people may or may not have the strength to overcome it. My life has improved significantly due to another person lending out their hand and making appreciate the positive aspects of life rather than the negative ones. We all are different individuals with different beliefs, experiences, strength, weakness, etc. at the end of the day, even I dislike a situation where a person suffering with addiction just give up on any hope of overcoming it. But instead of making light of someone going through a difficult situation we could help them get better and it is the least thing we could do. Have a nice day :)
@@nezukochan471 Staying addicted isn't an easy choice to avoid making, but initiating the addicting behavior is, you choose to do drugs for the first time you choose to drink you choose to overeat you choose to play video games you choose whatever, the first time doing it you choose it, and that's what dislike's saying. You can get over an addiction, with a metric fuckton of effort, you CAN choose to not be an addict anymore, it's just hard as hell. But absolving others of their blame for their own addiction is not going to help, they fucked up, and they're dealing with the consequences, telling them that they never fucked up'll just keep them from putting in the effort to get better. People don't get better by being told what they wanna hear they get better through taking earnest criticism.
I'm so glad he made this, it's been such a powerful revelation - especially the part where he explains why the experiments in earlier Mind Field episodes didn't produce the most 'sensational for TV' results; it's truly incredible to see now the work he's put behind the series considering he started out just as a UA-camr and now he's actually highlighting fascinating studies into fields like placebo that researchers don't want to pursue, I mean the man has already drastically improved the quality of life for some of those kids and their families by extension. One of the most underrated content creators alive, this man.
I think the biggest issue people have with placebo and hypnotic type of stuff is; that they feel embarrassed and humiliated when they find out it was their own brain. Alot of people dont know just how powerful our own brains are.
League of legends was the absolute WORST choice for this experiment. They should have had him play something non competitive and actually explorative of 3d spaces. They should have given him portal to play
@Thomas Johnson I bet the decision was made by someone on the esports team. Michael probably asked a producer for a suggestion and the producer probably asked some moron on the esports team who has spent the last 6 years of their life playing league every single day and had only spent like 5 hours on video games other than league. To that esports player, league is probably the best test of skill they can think of. They probably didn't think anything about exploring a space.
I rlly dunno if anyone has made an explanation on the "how chinese ppl associate with red" topic but in short there was a legend about a certain monster called "年" (which, I guess you can translate it directly into "year") that basically hunts people especially small children during New Year. People find out that it is scared of the color red, so they just put red things everywhere like the lantern, envelopes nd firecrackers stuff like that (it's also afraid of loud noises) and that protected people from the monster by scaring it away, since then the color red is associated with luck and joy and almost some sort of safety in chinese culture (especially to the older generation who directly absorbed this very big part of our cultural tradition)
It's important to relax the kids, sneezing can be a thought influencing act, creating a small distress feeling. I don't think of it as lying, as keeping the kids as cool as tiny cucumbers. Pretty good psychology behind every action he takes from my point of view.
@@dreugh424 if you anticipate pain you will feel it more painful. There's a Mind Field episode on that as well. So doctor could say "It won't hurt at all, if you believe me" and he actually won't be lying. And if you still feel pain he could parry with honest "well, that means you didn't believe me enough".

About the memory and sleeping bit, at about 2hours and 45 minutes in: I'm someone who suffers from a very bad memory, and I can't remember important moments that I have spent with people, even when I care much about them. I have recently found out that my sleep is irregularly terrible. So it's very reassuring that, by fixing my sleep, my memory can be improved. I have always done terrible in school and any type of tests. I have also always had a sleeping problem, and could never rest well. I've slept on classes and couldn't sleep well at home. Ironically, I can almost always remember my dreams, and it's actually always very easy. I wonder how much associated this is to what they're researching. Since my sleep isn't complete, the memory cycle isn't complete... I often times also worry about memory being overwritten; something I guess a lot of people don't even think about. This may just be a paranoia or something that I shouldn't worry about, as it doesn't seem to make sense for most people. But somehow, I'm very worried about learning things, as I won't remember them later. I hear and watch so many videos and podcasts, and research so much information... Yet, it seems like none of it is stored. I can't remember most of it. I really wish I could fix my sleep.
@@doublechindoge7 Well, my failure at school had many factors beyond memory; but it was all linked somehow. I slept in class (constant tiredness and sleepiness), I didn't do homework (because it was too hard since I didn't pay attention, and I didn't feel any motivation to do it). Perhaps if these problems were addressed earlier I wouldn't have failed school. I know I wouldn't do well on a college nowadays because it hasn't been solved. Or is this just an excuse for being lazy? Hell if I know.
@@Rickfernello Well I obviously don't know enough about your life to say, but I just imagine that must come with a lotta concerns about your future. I just remember getting super paranoid when I did my GCSEs due to not having a great memory myself (but nowhere near that bad), but getting stressed about it was the worst thing I could have done. The tests I was worried about and therefore revised loads for I got middling marks for, but the ones I didn't stress over as much I did really well in. In fact, if you asked anyone, they would probably tell you that English was my weakest subject, but I ended up getting the best grades in my English (7 (A) for Literature and 9 (Better than A*, top 2%) for language) because I didn't really care about what I was gonna get in it. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. For those reasons I'd say that if school is a problem, obviously don't give up on it, but if you find something that does work for you don't shy away from it just because school is "more important".
@@_Yohanan I am trying. The lack of motivation stops me from doing much better. My main problem is that I also have breathing problems, and I cannot breathe well without using medicine for some hours. I also snore a lot. So even if I fall asleep, my nose clogs up in about 3 to 4 hours and I wake up.
I remember being the subject of the oldest trick in the book I was 9 years old or so, my late father came home early and i was watching tv instead of studying, so i did the usual, play asleep. He came into the room, i can hear him looking at me, yes, i can hear his looks, i was scared shitless, but he was the kinda man that would make you laugh and fill you with love, but at the same time fill you with fear if you do something wrong. So he was looking at me and spoke to my brother, saying "he is not asleep, he keeps his mouth open when he sleeps", and you guessed it, i slowly opened my mouth thinking that they wont notice somehow if i do it slowly enough, but instead i hear him burst with laughter. A good memory. May Allah have mercy on his soul. He was the greatest father anyone could have wished for.

44:00 ok I'll reveal it then lmfao. It's tiny piece of pencil lead temporarily attached under his right thumbnail.
The sleight of hand involved is loading/unloading the pencil lead (uncomplicated when the only person you need to fool doesn't know they're involved in a magic routine), and making sure you keep your hand moving instead of statically holding the clipboard in the same place the number was written.
Yoo, I didn’t know those exact details but that’s pretty much what I guessed
Wow. That sounds awfully complicated! I don't think the average person is cut out to be a magician 🤣

mind field was, for a lack of a better term, a surreal experience for me.
This has probably jappened to me without me noticing, although it has happened to my friends alot and it's sort of funny haha.
Like you could have just lost a touch and got better at playing the high notes again after positive alignments in ur life
Your embouchure probably had also improved.

As a drug addict, I really wish Michael would make a video about addiction, and the science of it. It'd possibly bring light to the fact that we don't really choose to be addicts.
i feel the 100% same way
Hey, just wanted to let you know that I hope you are well.
The first time you took the drug you chose to be an addict. Now stop playing the victim card and blaming other innocent people for telling you what you are.
@@thedislikebutton1907
You don't have the slightest clue what is going on in other people's lives.

Ok can we all just agree that the best UA-cam premium series is now better because more people can watch it?!!?
Cobra Kai you mean?

That would be more likely if it was with malicious intent but honestly most people would laugh it off or prefer not to know

People find out that it is scared of the color red, so they just put red things everywhere like the lantern, envelopes nd firecrackers stuff like that (it's also afraid of loud noises)
and that protected people from the monster by scaring it away, since then the color red is associated with luck and joy and almost some sort of safety in chinese culture (especially to the older generation who directly absorbed this very big part of our cultural tradition)
Doc: It doesn't actually involve lying to the children
Also doc: ThE bEepS MAdE YOu SnEeZE
Doctors: "We never lie to patients"
My doctor: "Don't worry, this big ass needle won't hurt at all, really"
It's important to relax the kids, sneezing can be a thought influencing act, creating a small distress feeling. I don't think of it as lying, as keeping the kids as cool as tiny cucumbers. Pretty good psychology behind every action he takes from my point of view.

About the memory and sleeping bit, at about 2hours and 45 minutes in:
I'm someone who suffers from a very bad memory, and I can't remember important moments that I have spent with people, even when I care much about them.
It sucks how much your success at school depends on memory and not intelligence.
"Don't let your schooling interfere with your education"
Have you tried any methods to sleep better? For example starting a daily habit of meditation, especially before going to bed?
@@_Yohanan I am trying. The lack of motivation stops me from doing much better. Welcome back :D
I remember being the subject of the oldest trick in the book
I was 9 years old or so, my late father came home early and i was watching tv instead of studying, so i did the usual, play asleep.
