I used to think this whole "flat earth" thing is just one of those Internet jokes where trolls are pretending that earth is flat, you would think this joke is only staying on Internet. Until I came to know that there are people out there who actually believe that earth is flat and conduct conferences for it from time to time. What's worse is these people even bring their children into these places and brainwashing their mind since childhood.

They were reflecting lasers off the Moon surface in the late 50s so how can you prove its a laser relaying off the surface or NASA tech
@@ninaanderson8046 yes, essentially. What’s hilarious is that the island isn’t visible the vast majority of the time, but she uses it as an example. I’m originally from Michigan and we can see Chicago from the west shores during periods of very specific atmospheric conditions. Either she’s being disingenuous (definitely), lying (almost certainly), has never actually witnessed it at multiple times (highly likely), or a combination of the three.
And she could prove her idea false if she just kept watching that boat with her 900mm lens as it slowly disappeared over the horizon from bottom to tippy top.

Second, there are different ways to interpret that statement.
It also made me think, "what position should I take?"
Sure, it's possible, but does that mean it's actually also true? Nope.
Science is supposed to be always open for improvement, which sadly they often aren't and they pretend to have consensus.
It can be used as name calling to ridicule others.
Well the prompt was on whether or not scientific consensus is possible, which is an incredibly confusing prompt. Sure, it’s “possible”, but it doesn’t mean it’s correct. Is the implication meant to just be that consensus is a thing that is possible, or that it is always correct?

The contrast between the two groups is staggering.
The scientists consistently come from a place of curiosity, sincere exploration of facts, and willingness to hear others out.
In contrast, the other three individuals constantly framed themselves as victims of some (unclearly defined) persecution; repeatedly going on about how they are being silenced, and lied to, and attacked for their "knowledge".
If I knew absolutely nothing about the Earth's shape, and I saw this video, I would absolutely side with the scientists based on this interaction alone. The conspiracy theorists have such an intense air of smug arrogance to them, that I wouldn't be inclined to believe anything they have to say.
Anyone who claims to know everything on a subject, but refuses to listen to what others have to say about it, has instantly revealed themselves to be an unreliable source of information.

@@avadheshmalik; I think I follow what you mean. However, Climate Change is a scientifically proven problem. The misguided actions of some protestors doesn't change that.
I think it's important to be able to separate the message from the messenger in cases like that. Some activists definitely take things pretty far, but that doesn't mean the issue isn't real.
Additionally, it's my understanding that several of those people were found to have been hired by the very organizations they were supposedly protesting. Big companies, like those who trade in Oil, have a lot to gain from making their opponents look foolish and unreasonable.
At certain points in the video i think th scientist lost their cool and did the same offensive tactics understandable though

Thats JPEG compression, not cut and paste. Its amazing how he can say it so confidently yet have no clue what he's even describing. Hes describing an artifact of the photo being digitised, so it wont be on the original film version

@Sakusha Durante dude, there are multiple studies done on the subject. Countless amounts of evidence is out there, you just have to look. But I guess looking for concrete evidence is not something flat earthers are good at. They rather watch a 6 minute video off UA-cam and call it a day.

Being educated by an institution where the government ultimately controls text books can teach any story they want. The difference between the scientists in this video and the flat Earth researchers are the flat Earth group is doing hands on experiments with results that don't follow the scientist definitions. You can see things in the distance that you shouldn't while the scientists keep steadfast to the "facts" they believe to be true without the open mind to truly consider anything different. Science changes all the time with new proofs that replace old truths so why is it so beyond the realm of possibility that the truth of a globe can't be replaced by the proof of a flat one?

As for the sun, it is never explicitly stated, nor is it originally called a firmament at all, but raki'a, which just means "expansion". It denotes the space or expanse like an arch appearing immediately above us. They who rendered raki'a by firmamentum regarded it as a solid body or concept. The term itself merely refers to the sky, and not a direct firmament.

This is a hard discussion to have without actually diving into specific claims and nailing them down. Flat earthers always wiggle out of any claim and shift goalposts.

A very interesting part in these discussions is not just the topic that is discussed but definitely also the way in which it was discussed. The fact that the side of the flat-earthers seemed repeatedly unable to make correct logical inferences from their discussion exposes clearly what goes wrong as they do their own investigations.

@@angelsalike9145 The link between Mythology and religion is pretty strong (Actually what we call religion would be part of the Mythology), and we almost always use the word Mythology for any of the Egyptian, Greek or Nordic (and others) religions..
And just to correct the fact about Atlas, he was holding a night sky sphere (we can identify stars on it). But it's right that Greek philosophers wrote about the spherical shape of the Earth, and even managed to calcul the Earth's circumference (with an approx of 10%, which is not bad considering the technologies they had at their disposal).

Vulpea Sireata a lot of times scientists speak about what they don’t know about. The amount of fields that you would have to study to no all topics is crazy.Neil Tyson is a great example. He will talk about a range of topics and be very wrong sometimes. My point is being a scientist does not make you an expert on most topics just the ones use specialize in.

With a spherical Earth, half the planet is in daylight at any given time and the other half experiences nighttime. so the earth is ROUNDDD!!

if you listen to her reason why she became a flat earther you can clearly see that her shift in belief was deeply linked to her loss of her husband who had that "truther" mindset, she needs to believe in that idea as it helps her feel as if she is following in her dead husbands foot steps, its an emotional link for her and that's sad. she needs therapy.

I love how respectful the scientists were while also being firm on their stance. Also I took a lot out of this. Its so easy to want to listen to people who have such conviction and passion about a topic or idea and even we ourselves can get "gut feelings" about something that are absolutely wrong. Just shows the importance of staying humble and listening to yourself before listening to anybody else. You are the only person capable of deciding what you believe.
