I saw a picture the other day of vandalism from an Ancient Greek tourist to the Egyptian pyramids. Inscribed in Greek lettering was something like "The sarcophagus wasn't that cool. Also I can't read hieroglyphics." That solidified for me 100%, that for the past many thousands of years we have been the exact same people, just in different worlds.

He could have just stuck his hand out to literally include everybody! Also, if he had prior removal of his tonsils and/or foreskin, he'd also be included. Even a haircut alone would make it a humanitarian all-inclusive selfie!
Vsauce was a LOT different 12 years ago… i would say the music with thought provoking videos started becoming part of the channels identity about 9 or 10 years ago
The pictures taken by the Tsar's daughter are so fascinating. I've never seen anyone from that time depicted in such a human way that's similar to how we take pictures of ourselves now, as opposed to a photo of them sat down blank faced where they seem so far from human that they could be robots. It genuinely makes it so much more real when Michael then goes on to mention how her and the rest of the family were killed by Bolsheviks shortly after.
Came to the comments looking for this one. The pictures of her making funny faces really struck me. I’m sure I have similar pictures of myself from when I was 13.
I believe it just shows disparity even more. As royalty can do these things imagine the avarage russian. A shame they had to die, but it was the only way.
And she was a mythological person for the next 90 years. Look at the Disney movie Anastasia, that's HER, the idea that she got away was this beautiful hope, that Anastasia was out there somewhere because the world had been connected to this teenager.
This is probably the first time that Michael didn't go off topic at all, he explained everything about this topic, from introduction to body to conclusion and still left us wondering with a very important questions in the end 👏
Yeah, the most "off-topic" this video went for me is the spooky music when talking about Hiromix photos. I was legit spooked for no reason that whole segment
When Michael seemingly introduces an unrelated topic, he always makes it clearly understood as being related to the primary topic of the video by the end of it. Michael never goes off topic.
it will have been two years since the last vsauce main channel upload in five days. thank god you show up on my shorts from time to time. i love your mind michael, thank you for sharing it with us. i hope you are doing more than well
Michael is one of like 5 youtubers uploading consistent, high-quality, videos that are interesting for more than 10 years. Edit: Ok, yes it's more than 5.
Michael, I cannot thank you enough for continuing to produce these videos. My father and I loved to watch them in the earlier days of your channel, and it's a lovely memory every time I enjoy a new video of yours! The "A-ha!" moments in your videos give a physical aspect to those memories.
I find it funny how this video's title has already changed a good couple of times since it launched, probably in an effort to find a remedy to its amazingly low amount of views (for this channel's high standards, of course). This whole channel has been in full damage control recently, flooding the subscription feed with lots of low-effort shorts marked with typical ":O" face, clickbait thumbnails. Even Vsauce isn't immune to the god of UA-cam algorithms it seems.
My dad and I loved watching Vsauce! It was one of our favorite activities to do when he was sick and I was looking after him. Always think of and miss my old man when a new one of these pops up in my feed.
How Michael is able to take a silly, seemingly random topic such as "Who took the first selfie?" and turn it into a 25 minute, excellent, thought-provoking social commentary is so wonderfully inspiring. I've always loved how VSauce videos take so many tangents that are all related to each other yet make a very entertaining and informative video. Michael, you're a genius.
Yeah, this might be one of my favourite Vsauce videos yet! It's always a delight to see Michael still smashing it out of the park with the same vibe and quality of all the classic videos.
Seriously I love that music and had the same reaction to it being Vsauce music. Didn't know the artist until you mentioned it. Now on a google search spree to acquire it.
"Going Down" will always be the track that encapsulates the sense of curiosity and exploration that defines Vsauce, to me. Jake Chudnow is almost as much what makes Vsauce, Vsauce as Michael
I wouldn’t. He explicitly mentions events from the year 2015 in this video. Now if somebody claimed this video was made 8 years ago, then I’d believe them.
2 years ago today, Michael uploaded his final long form video to Vsauce. Since then it's been just shorts. Please come back to long form videos, Michael, we all miss them.
There is something incredibly sad about hearing 14yo Anastasia Nikolaevna, who took goofy pictures of herself and sent them to friends, then hearing how she was executed in a revolution. If you read it in a history book, you would have no feeling. It would be "There was a royal family, they were executed", but actually seeing her photos, and seeing her be a 14yo girl and then hearing about her execution. That is so much sadder. She was just a kid.
I had watched a documentary about the execution of the Czar's family in Russia. It said Nikola was a close friend of King George but UK didn't give refuge to Them or something like that happened. They were cousins and close friends.
@@easternhorizon67 The UK attempted to take in the Romanovs multiple times;however, they were never able to safely leave Russia and get to the UK. The British and Russian monarchies we're cousins.

The Anastasia story is so sad. She brought a form of happiness that didn't exist before. People had such a hard time appreciating themselves. A hard time looking in the mirror. They still do. But to be able to express your emotion because you are the subject and director in your story. It's just so special.

These do not garner your sympathy? Because none of them had the money for fancy cameras? Because Lenin's family was hanged by the Czar because of a peaceful protest, he's now a thug? Because all of those people for their entire lives have lived in worse conditions than American slaves, you don't see anyone talking about them. Thugs indeed... These B&W old photos of legit selfies feel so eerily real. I know why that is, thanks to Vsauce; yet I still struggle with how “not old” the people appear
When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! The world is wicked, evil, and of the devil. I too, was a wicked sinner of the world before I opened my heart to God. I am living proof of God's work and fruitfulness! He is an active God who hears the prayers of his! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous. The devil is a liar that comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy; that includes your relationship with God. Open your heart to God, repent of your sins (he will forgive you), and let him direct your path. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands and purify your heart, lest you walk with the devil and follow him to hell.
It's not the 1st, it's actually the 2nd, but the first might not actually be the first, technically, so this could be the first, unless you include this other thing which makes it not even the 2nd, or even the thousandth
He did a ted talk once where he talked about his videos and it's basically that. He likes questions and answering them. Specifically "why" questions where you can keep asking "why?" And go deeper.
for some reason the case of the daughter of the tzar the fact that she took pictures that were real makes her execution so much scarier, i felt like i almost knew her but my heart skipped a beat when micheal said she was executed in her basement. a lot of times i feel like we brush off historical deaths because they're impersonal and the only photos we have are old portraits but after seeing these personal and real photos of her that looks like some goofy photo someone posted on instagram something changed.
uh you realize the tzar was responsible for the suffering and poverty and oppression of millions of russian people and also caused millions of their deaths in WWI?
Seeing the selfies Anastasia took was so surreal. Hard to believe they were taken over a century ago. Makes me wonder what pictures we might’ve gotten if selfies like today were a regular part of the 19th and 20th century.
Yeah, I feel like her photos would have been a better example than the smiling Chinese man for the Illusions of Time video, but I liked that photo too.
Crazy to look back at myself going from a teenager watching these vids as they came out weekly, having them be part of my routine. To now in my late 20s getting a rush of nostalgia from hearing the vsauce jingle play. Thank you for being part of my life for the last 13 years Micheal ❤️
Same! I used and still love revisiting vsauce. These videos have really molded me into the kind of curious person I am, I enjoy thinking about and answering questions, for its own sake. Thanks Michael
It's amazing how the timeline of selfies brings more than just the selfie in question. From people royals like Anastasia taking images like Instagram is already a thing, to people like Hiromix actively pushing the idea into the spotlight. Hell, wouldn't have even considered a hand print of a selfie. But I like Hiromix's work in particular, and I would not be surprised if she also pioneered the "aesthetic" style images that have been floating around recently. The time, colors, and culture work perfectly. She simply is a legend of her time. Anyway, amazing video as usual. I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

@@remysenter9188 Grammatically, I think that if an image I (subject) make of mySELF (reflexive object) is a SELFie, then an image I (subject) make of US (object) should be an "USsie." I can't take a picture of "we" because "we" is a subject (it does stuff, stuff isn't done to it). A subject+object focus is where "selfie" comes from so, for that reason, I think "ussie" is (despite being funny) the most consistent choice: (subject focus) WE are in this picture I am in this picture (object focus) This is a picture of US This is a picture of ME (subject+object focus) I took this picture of MYSELF I took this picture of US
I really like how Bek portrayed himself as a dumpy potato boy and idealized his wife into a beautiful woman, he had free reign to portray himself however he wished but he saw himself as a just a regular guy who lucked into the most beautiful woman ever.
not sure with the ancient Egyptians, but other ancient cultures saw fat bellies as a status symbol. it's a sign of prosperity, in a time where food scarcity is common, that person has enough food to eat and get fat. also not doing manual labor as well.
Art in the Amarna period (when Akhenaten was pharaoh and Bek was chief sculptor) was weird. If you look at carvings of Akhenaten, you'll see a lot of the same sort of "dumpy potato boy" imagery. Though Akhenaten tended to have thinner arms and legs, he still had the belly. Bek refers to himself on a carving as ""the apprentice whom His Majesty taught". In my archaeology studies, my professor indicated that the implication is that the Pharaoh demanded a more naturalistic style than was common in Egyptian art up to this point. You can still see a bit of the belly on Tutankhamen's sculptures, and he's the pharaoh that followed Akhenaten. Whether this is a stylistic issue or a more realistic image of the pharaoh is up for debate, given that Tutankhamen was quite young and would be unlikely to have developed a paunchy belly yet. It's also worth noting that the plump men with more idealistic women is fairly common. You'll still see a bit of poochy belly on carvings of women from this time, sometimes (see full-bodied sculptures of Nefertiti) but they still tend to be rather slender and idealized. Again, there's the question of whether this is a stylistic choice or reflection of reality.
This is the Vsauce I missed, that I've been craving for years: Beautifully diving into a topic no one has ever thought about, but doing it in a way that makes us all incredibly interested in it. Keep it up Michael, we love you!
It happens to everyone, okay? Sometimes, it's been a while since you did something, and then it just comes prematurely without you being able to stop it
I think it's amazing that after all these years of UA-cam being around, that Vcauses' familiar music, Micheal's way of explaining things and the general flow of these video's, are still so relaxing and interesting to watch, and it always kind of takes me back to when I first started watching this channel way back in 2013
I actually think that despite this video seeming exactly like all his others, Michael's videos have matured significantly over time; the structure of this video is no longer "random tangents that happen to teach you a lot along the way" but a meaningful step by step path, yet one that still branches and forks into every possible nook and cranny of the subject, answering the viewers exact questions as they come up, one by one. It's remarkable how well produced they are, despite being about something so silly.
This video in particular really penetrated my soul. It's beautiful to see pictures that make people of the past seem so real and human. It seems that grainy, black and white daguerreotypes automatically lead us to view the subjects as stoic, distant, and different from us. Colorized photographs and teenagers taking casual mirror selfies in 1915, smiling and posing like real kids that lived and laughed, just changes things.
Idk why, but it had never occurred to me that the term "selfie" was probably Australian in origin. In retrospect, it makes perfect sense we started popularising it. In school we had (mostly) shorter nicknames ending in every vowel for just about everything.
I'm really glad you mentioned Vivian Maier, she is relavilty lesser-known but is a shining example of a "true" artist; one that creates for the sake of creation and expresses for the sake of expression.
“Let me put my brain food into your gray matter mouth” Vsauce’s last words before he disappeared for 21 months and starting absolutely blasting shorts content
The Anastasia photos are really interesting. They’re so casual and “normal” by today’s standards. I can’t imagine film was cheap in 1915 and she would’ve had to pay for that film to get developed too. To any of the general population film was almost precious. Pictures were serious and you needed to be careful with your film. Not to her. She could spend the film frivolously. Whether she would have done that if she wasn’t a member of a royal family is up for debate, but we’ll never truly know. I just think that piece is really wonderfully interesting.
That's not actually very accurate. The camera she used, the Kodak Brownie, was one of the first snapshot camera to be produced en masse. It was the "people's camera" and inexpensive. In today's USD, it would only be $33 USD or only $1 back in 1900. Anastasia took those pictures between 1914-17 meaning they were even more common than in 1900
I really really really really really miss these vsauce videos. You were the reason I even have UA-cam premium, so I could watch Mind Field. But I wanna go back to the time I could watch really odd ball questions no one's ever thought of where we learn something new, and the rabbit hole is full of tangents, where it enriches and entices us philosophically. It doesn't need to keep getting better and better. I don't mind shorter videos, with less research. Please don't be a perfectionist, there's nowhere else in the internet like vsauce.
this video brought tears to my eyes because of how profound the idea of the evolution of self portraits into selfies is despite being such a mundane thing. I don't know why but I get emotional over learning to look at things in a whole new way. I remember how I always had just memorized that pi is 3.14 etc but I never conceptualized what it really meant, I just sort of knew it as something used in geometry involving circles and got by with just plugging in the number in equations but then I started watching match videos on youtube and getting more interested in math stuff and then feeling such a joy in understanding how pi is the ratio of the diameter to the circumference, like I had heard that phrased that way before but never really conceptualized what it meant, that a circle with a diameter of 1 will have a circumference of pi, that if you take that circle and lay it out flat the line you would get would be 3.14 units of that 1 unit diameter circle, and when I finally really grasped that for the first time I was just amazed and wanted to share it with everyone else cause it felt so astounding of a revelation to me at the time. And looking at selfies in this whole different way has also brought me to that feeling of revelation, granted maybe not as much but still. It's always just so amazing to see something so simple taken to such detail and to come out of it able to see it in a new light.

Michael Collins taking the first ‘reverse selfie’ (12:50) gave me shivers. I knew he took stayed behind while the Neil and Buzz landed, and I’ve seen that photo. But I never connected the dots. I wonder how many of those have ever been taken? Ten?? Idk. They had to have all been taken during the Apollo missions
It was super interesting to hear about the "selfie pose", because my dad and family have messed with that idea for years, consistently doing our own quite different pose of terror at taking selfies.
As someone who was into blogging in the early 2010s, I remember when the terms "selca" (a shortening of the phrase self camera) and "GPOY" (Gratuitous Picture of Yourself) were used instead of the word "selfie." Both myself and other bloggers would use these terms until the popularity of the word "selfie" took off. I think it's really interesting that these phrases aren't used much anymore compared to the word "selfie."

I find it funny how this video's title has already changed a good couple of times since it launched, probably in an effort to find a remedy to its amazingly low amount of views (for this channel's high standards, of course).
@@mjjjuly this
@@mjjjuly why it didn't apply to his wife though?

This video in particular really penetrated my soul. It's beautiful to see pictures that make people of the past seem so real and human.
Anastasia took those pictures between 1914-17 meaning they were even more common than in 1900

this video brought tears to my eyes because of how profound the idea of the evolution of self portraits into selfies is despite being such a mundane thing.
