A super simple way to sound good over jazz changes

  • So they told you to practice the major scale? Nice one, but its not going to lead you to be able to play the changes.
Instead, convert everything to minor triads, and don’t change on every chord, only when the tunes’ tonality really changes. The changing context will add spice while the notes stay the same, creating amazing suspense in your lines, and always a proper way to resolve.
I explain the method at around 10 minutes in.
    Here is the TLDR version:
    - Over major chords, go down a minor third and play the minor triad there
    - Over Minor chords, play the minor triad from the root of that chord
    - Over dominant chords, play the triad from the 5th
    - Over 7b5 chords, go up a minor third and play the minor triad there
    - Over altered 7 chords, just play the minor from the root

Thank you for this! I have struggled as you have. All of the instruction I have seen is about memorizing scales, modes, or licks. Most of the instruction from good jazz players is too complex as they breakdown the theory, I go into overload and depression thinking that I'll never get it. Thanks for these simple instructions, makes total sense!

The #1 challenge of guitar is that there are infinite permutations and combinations of scale patterns and shapes to play the same exact notes. I've been playing since 1996 and I only just now feel kind of ok playing any scale (or arpeggios) in any position spontaneously. And I mean just ok, I'm still not fluid with it. It can take literally decades. Keyboards have one key for each unique note, so that's not an issue for them at all.

Hello. This looks like Pat Martino‘s concept, as in his book Linear Expression. Kudos for finding it on your own :)

I wish I had known this much earlier. This looks like a very good way to get started. My teacher has me working on language which is a different, more sophisticated approach that takes a lot of practice but pays off.

How did he have you work on language, like quoting licks, or?
