    I'm a pianist and I been practicing arppegiating the diatonic seventh chord up the scale in every major key for about a month and a half and I'm starting to notice some cool patterns. Diatonic seventh chords are really the way to go imo.

    Here's an easy way to find the chord that is a tritone interval away for substitution as shown starting at time 13:10 in the video. A tritone interval is half of an octave. Since going once around the Circle of Fifths and Fourths traverses an octave by the time you get back to where you started, the tritone is halfway around. That's the note (or chord) that is directly opposite to the starting note (or chord). For example, looking on the Circle you can see that Db is directly opposite from G, so the tritone substitution for G7 is Db7. Likewise for any other chord you want to substitute. The Circle of Fifths (and Fourths) is magic in so many ways.

    Awesome sequence of learning the basic Jazz progressions! Tri-tone sub pops right out of descending Dom 7ths in a blues turnaround!

Boa sorte! 👍🏽

    Thanks for this video. My teacher says the same, you will get to know them because the progressions repeatedly come back in the standards. I am still puzzling how it benefits my play supposedly I have them memorized (or if I can recognize them by ear). Do you have a video on that?

    When it comes to jazz, if you see a progression written such as ii-V-I, is it assumed that they would all be 7th chords?

    Good stuff. 🍻
    (I’m not a grammar snob but.. I do think confusion can be avoided. It should be noted that people often confuse the “with” and “for” when talking about substitutes. Be mindful of this this.
    E.g. when using a tritone sub for the ii- in C:
    “I subbed the D- with an Ab7” = correct.
    “I subbed the D- for an Ab7” = incorrect.
    “I subbed an Ab7 for the D-“ = correct.
    “I subbed the Ab7 with a D-“ = incorrect.
    Hope this clears that up. 👍)

      They both contain the notes A and c so they can be used in a similar fashion depending on the key.

    • @grammarpenguin
      @grammarpenguin 3 місяці тому

      It's altered with a #9, which is the same as b3, so I guess it's kind of both dominant and minor 7th at the same time? :D I definitely hear the #9 better than the 3 in this audio too though

      @@grammarpenguin 5 months later... Let's see how my ear was back then 😅

    • @gabrielwickander
      @gabrielwickander 3 місяці тому

      @@grammarpenguin hmm I currently only hear the tones F, G and Bb. Back then I must have assumed it was an Gm7 because the Gm7 quality remains even though the fifth (D) is missing.

    • @gabrielwickander
      @gabrielwickander 3 місяці тому

      @@grammarpenguin For it to be an altered G chord, the B and the D should exist. At least the B, But I don't hear either of them... 🤔

    • @grammarpenguin
      @grammarpenguin 3 місяці тому

      I don't really hear the B distinctly either, but you can tell there must be something there because the chord sounds a lot crunchier than the shell voicing of Gm7 would. His index finger is on the B on the D string, so the full chord is G B F A#: G7#9 with the 5th omitted.
