  • Almost full grown hand fed baby finches, they are all sweet and very tame
They mostly wait thier turn but a few cut in line
6 demanding, noisy baby zebra finches being hand fed . mother finch died , the father was still feeding them but not sitting on them , they got real cold , so it was time to pull them and put them in a nice warm brooder and start hand feeding, they all have grown quite a bit and becoming quite a handful.

Very cool, I love zebras i know most people think finches are boring and not as cool as parrots but i prefer them more than most "pet" birds. Great job.

I like the way you keep the formula warm. I was having a hard time keeping it warm in the begining when I had to use flat toothpick method. Mine were 2 and 4 days old when I had to rescue from nest. They are starting to ween now. It's amazing how fast they grow. What lovely birds you have.

Thank you , I used to mess with temperature all the time also till I started using the double boiler method, I found that the day old can eat out of a bare syringe end just fine, its a bit awkward but they seem to get their little mouths around it, You just have to be sure that all the air has been pushed out is all,

I would suggest not taking baby finches from caring parents, In this case the mother finch died after her clutch hatched. I only hand feed baby finches after they are rejected or orphaned.
If the mother has too many babies they will often reject one or two too ensure the survival of the rest, then I have no problem with properly equipped people trying to save them..

What can I do if the parents might be un-tame. If my finches have babies and I want to tame some or all of them do I have to take them away from the parents at some point?

I got one more question. It turns out the finch who built a nest in my cage is a male. He sits more inside it. Female sometimes participates in building the nest but doesnt go in much. Is that how it is supposed to be? Also when a bird is pregnant, can it be seen , for example does the bird get fatter?

my hand tame finces like cuddling, there are many parrots that like to cuddle , check out some of my other vids , i have plenty of examples , my favorite is the sun conures they will cuddle you to death, skittles and starburst cuddle and sleep inside my jacket.

you can make your own baby food but I would suggest a store bought formula , in a emergency I mix this recipe
    ¼ cup dry dog food
Boiling water to cover dog food
    ½ teaspoon creamy peanut butter
½ teaspoon rice cereal (for infants)
    1 tablespoon cooked green
    vegetable beans peas etc
    1 tablespoon cooked yellow
    vegetable squash corn etc
    1 tablespoon cooked orange
    vegetable carrot etc
    􀂙 1 tablespoon soft fruit ( I use papya)
It will get you by untill you can buy regular formula.

That is awesome! We are currently handfeeding a baby finch and am wondering how we can wean it to eat regular seeds. Any tips? We found it on March 14th, and it was featherless, but not pink, so not extreme newborn, but pretty new- perhaps a few days old?
Today is the 1st, so it is about 2.5 weeks old. When do you recommend for the weaning to start, and how should we go about it? I also want to "handtame" it so that every time it sees my hand, it is not just about eating. I want to hang out and not just be the feeder. Any suggestions?
Its feathers are growing in nicely, but we still can't determine the gender because the crop, head and cheek area still needs to get some feathers. Any tips would be great! Thanks!

Where is the weening? You only feed them. How do you get them eating seeds?

  • @nonskids
    @nonskids  15 років тому

males are usually the nest builders and then try to impress the female with it, so what you have going on is normal, ,,,, the female will go in into it more as she gets closer to laying,,, with finches it is hard to see visibly if it is pregnant, sometimes while the egg is moving down the reproductive track you may see a bulge near her business end, but by then she should be sitting in the nest, be sure they have plenty of calcium and vitamin b-12.

@darkfamin you shouldnt have to do anything, if the eggs are fertile the parents should sit and riase them.

Do you know if there are any parrot species who actually like to cuddle or be cuddled by people?
