  • Four rescued baby birds feed chirpily from an unlikely Mr. Mom......UPDATE (4-29-12): They were released back into the wild just five days after this video was made. They gained weight and plumage quickly, due in part from a diet of enriched parakeet pellets softened with water. Two days after video they began flying. Three days after video they'd mastered landings. Four days after video they learned self feeding and drinking and bathing in water. Fifth day they were flying about inside the house and seeking each other out for shared roosts. I decided it was time. I took the nest outside and all four flew to the top of 40-ft. tall eucalyptus trees, expertly and without hesitation. My job was done.

Nice video. I live in Switzerland, and a pair of alpine citrus finches moved into one of my outdoor roller blinds to protect the windows from avalanches. I leave mine open year round, and nobody else does. Hence they picked mine. Anyway, the other day I noticed on the ground two eggs shells cracked open, but with nothing else. Now throughout the day every hour and a half both parents fly taking turns flying into the nest with food in their beak. It’s nice to see these parent birds doting on their offspring. Some thing you don’t see in some harsh parts of nature. It’s still early, so I haven’t heard any chirping but when the parents are sitting on my balcony, they sing to each other. I’m looking forward to seeing the babies.

I've raised finches before, including hand feeding new hatchlings. Four things that became apparent after a sad failure: Always place material in the nest the babies can grab onto, otherwise they could get deformed feet from smooth bowls or tissue nests. And it's important that the babies receive the first early meals from mom because they have something in their transfer that affects their immune system. Try and make sure that when the babies open their eyes, they see you. If they saw mommy first, they might act shy when offered food by you. And finally, when the babies get pinfeathers (blood feathers) try not to handle them. It's a painful experience for them at this stage.

Your dad jokes at the end are what really makes this for me.
Thank you for taking care of these babies. A lot of people wouldn't even try, much less work that hard to get it right.

god bless you for this video I had to pull a single chick from under my carport before it was roasted Live in 105 + heat and no shade .she almost didn't recover and finally I had to pull her out permanently to stop her from heat stroke .she refused any food from me and was at risk of predictors when I put her outside for mom and dad to feed her and they still do show up throughout the day but now after several days of keeping her out of the severe heat during the day she's been listening to this video which I now play every hour so she eats .I'm using baby bird mix from pet store to be sure she has right nutrition and so far it's your video above all others that has really saved the day . you should see her Percheron my hand as I place my phone up to her so she can watch it's adorable. thanks for making my little chick eat enough couldn't have done it without your video

I really like you, Instead of domesticating them you sent them out into the wild to be free when they would be ready. :)

I just saved a baby finch in the afternoon traffic. Its a miracle it didnt get squashed. I had to swerve to not run it over myself. My friend who breeds budgies gave me some budgi porridge...hoping that helps for now!!Hope it survives the night.

They were not really done . They needed a place to come for food and water which is so important . I hope you did that for them . As there parents would have stayed with them for months feeding and carrying for them

I have a nest of three red breasted house finch on top of my front porch post, she had one chick this spring that is now adult, now in July she has three more, but I'm beginning to think for some reason she has abandoned them, I don't see her in and out of the nest anymore. They are very small, and it was 101 degrees today, I used a step ladder and a dropper to give them some water, two drink the third one didn't, Ive read to leave them alone and to not disturb the nest which I haven't. I don't know if I should take them to a wildlife shelter, or leave them alone with hopes the mother will take care of them. I think I see her around, but she never flies in the nest. anymore.

I think the chicks was not abandoned by their mother..may the mother just roaming around looking for food, then someone saw the nest with these chicks....believing it was abandoned..

not to worry I make sure this little chick has regular visits with mom to allow her to be fed and remain wild I am only keeping her close and making sure she doesn't over heat or get eaten by predators. like blue Jay's and other birds of prey who could easily snatch her up if given the chance. she should be ready to join her parents soon as she can fly

Baby finches r the only baby birds that i dont find annoying lol...the way they look i guess is why i dont like othee baby birds. Their mouth is the main part thats weird. Idk why either. I love birds as adults and even young birds. But as babies, only finches are cute to me from day one lol

    Beautiful story your a hero.
Today I just realize by a dead baby that my Zebra Finch parent's babies that hatched 5 days ago...Don't know how to feed their chicks. It's as if they were looking to me for help & I spent hours showing the food (which they began eating) then I was opening my mouth like the baby trying to show them that they have to put food it the baby's mouth. I went online an still am NOT sure what I can mix up that I have here to feed them. What do you think about pureed, egg, potatoes & carrot. OR Unsalted crackers with hot water (cooled down) It's Sunday Night & all the stores are closed. I just was NOT Prepared for this at ALL and I'm really nervous.
They ALS0 go Crazy if I try to just look into the nest.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thank you

Tipjar333, I have 5 baby finches to take care of, I called the bird hotline here in Northern Florida and they told me exactly what to feed them. It's been 3 days now, and watching this video made me feel all good inside somehow. That's me at feeding time, except that I'm not making a video. When I do the wave, the babies think I'm their mum, and all I see is 5 beaks wide open. Anyway, this video assures me that I'm doing the right thing.
