so cute!!! I have two zebra finches and when they lay eggs, they sit on it and after a couple or more days later, they eat it. XD because its no good and dead. but that's the tiniest baby bird I've ever seen! and it looks soo healthy and cute! good job feeding it, too. you're really good with birds!! :)
The crop is always with the bird. The adult still has a crop, but it is covered with feathers so you generally don't see it when it's filled with seed.
I used to hand-raise zebra finches and other birds and i often looked like a statue in the park, with 5or 6 finches perched on my ears and shoulder, along with cockatiels on my foot and my head, macaw babies inmy lap, african grey babies snugg.ed up with the cats and the dog looking very put out that the rabbit had taken her usualspot beside me on the couch. But the best time wasafter feeding everybody. I would put a towel across hy chest and tuck the s alest babie under my chin and the largest babies in the middle and place everbody else in comfortable spots, foldthe towel up around them and rock them to sleep. They were adorable, all of them, but the finches and the budgies wwere the cutest because they were so tiny. 😊❤❤❤❤❤😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
HELP LOL ! i have 2 finch eggs and i need help on answering some questions. when they hatch when do you start feeding them? how much do i feed them? how often do you feed them? do i need to also give them water? does the paste have to be more liquid than solid?
Since I'm only making a small amount, it cools off pretty quickly. I start with water that is near boiling. You see in the video that I test the temperature of the formula on my own skin before feeding the bird and I keep it warm in the syringe by keeping that in a cup of warm water.
I have a baby zebra finch who is a about a week old, it keeps getting kicked out of the nest. I keep putting it back in and the parents do sit on it and spend quite a bit of time in the nest. I'm not sure they are feeding it though as its crop is never full when I see it, like the one in your video, what should I intervene and is there a home made recipe I can make? It might take me some time to find a commercial food.
That's the food. Birds hold their food in a "sack" on their neck called a crop. It goes from there to their stomach. It allows a bird to eat a lot of food and digest it as they need to.
Hello , thanks for the video :) I have a couple of questions : 1) I bought two adults zebras a couple months ago and they stayed with each other like a month and after that badly the male zebra escaped from the cage by my wrong and he could fall down and eaten by a cat in the midnight :'( so .. can she lay eggs in her own ? until I get her a male finch after like two months because they are not available in the pet store ========> continued ====>
Roy, What is that stuff you're feeding the chick? What is in it? Roy, I've learned alot about Zebra Finches from You Site and I use a lot of Information to Care for mine. Why didn't you talk in this video? Especially, to tell what you are feeding the chicks, how often "Do You Feed them? Can we Over feed them? More Information, Please.
I usually fill up as much as they will take. Keeps me from having to feed them so often. You can feed less if you're concerned, the crop will just empty sooner and you'll have to feed more often.
how long do you have to wait to feed them again? my finches keep kicking out the babies and I'm having to hand feed one. idk how I'll be able to because I have school..
+Roy Beckham Haha thank you but I'm an amateur breeder and I think my parents will probably kill me if they see the face of another zebra finch in the house. Maybe I'll buy it when I go pro!
Great video! I have two finches but all they do is chase each other and barely warm the baby. They had two but when I checked one was tossed out and had died. They tossed the second one too but I put it back in a few times, could I start taking care of it if they toss it out again?
Hi, my mother's zebra finches layed eggs about a week ago but since yesterday they have stopped lying on them! I gave them more nesting materials but still nothing! What can I do? Should I take the nest out and keep the eggs on a heat mat or under a che bulb? Or leave them be?
It sometimes takes finches a clutch or two to get things right. If they haven't returned to sitting on the eggs again after a couple of days, you can remove them and let them start again. You can check how the eggs are doing by "candling" the eggs. This means to shine a light through the egg. See my other video on candling finch eggs. If you still see activity in the egg then let them keep the eggs. They can leave the eggs longer when the outside temperature is hot/warm.
I have a finch but it got feathers what do I feed it it not well it can’t fly it lays on it side and rolls idk what wrong with it it sleeping now what should I feed it it wings are bleeding and it can’t walk
I need some advice so I have a baby orphan zebra finch and I'm currently hand feeding them ( 13 days old ) but some of the food is getting stuck under the top beak. is this normal and if not what should I do? :S
stuck on the inside of the mouth? Is it gone the next time you go to feed the chick? By the time the chick is 13 days old I'm usually feeding well into the crop. Look for the video I have feeding this chick when it's older.
you do want to avoid aspirating the birds and this can be a problem if you're feeding a lot and not used to when to stop. You also want the food to empty out of the crop as they use it and not keep putting more new food on old food because you're on a schedule. Here's that same bird later: ua-cam.com/video/UHVcR6t-AMU/v-deo.html
Hey my finch pair recently had babies last week but sadly they flew away while I was cleaning their cage, and no the babies have no one to care for them, I tried blending seeds with warm water and giving them a few drops, I also put them in a warm blanket bunched up to keep warm, is there anything else I need to know or do in order to keep them well and alive? Please help
I would try to get a commercial handfeeding formula from the pet or feed store. These are most often used for parrots, but work fine for finches. Seed alone is not a complete nutritional source for the chicks (or parents for that matter). You can use a dry protein food for human babies and mix like the bird handfeeding formular. You can also try crushed dry dog food that is mixed like the formula. Keep it thin and well hydrated. Good luck.
Yo man if youre about please help! I got handed 3 swallow chicks because the sspca aint open after 4! how do i get them to feed? i have a whole bunch of mealworms which i have mashed into oblivion and made a little paste with water. but do i need to do anything special for them to feed? they hatched today and im just trying to keep them warm and wrapped up. please assist with information if possible!
Not really sure of the differences in a swallow and an estrildid grassfinch. Getting a bird to gape can depend upon the age of the bird (if their eyes are open yet) and the angle they hold their head can also effect how you feed them. Otherwise you could try a handfeeding formula and feeding as described.
Could I possibly take a baby finch out of the nest, the reason being is that the last time my finches laid Eggs 1/3 hatched. That one my dad found dead a week later still in the nest. Also, could you send me a link or maybe list the items I need to hand grow one. How do you teach it to fly or does it learn on its own? Can I keep him/her out of the cage? I am a 14 year old almost out of school and my finches have some eggs that might be due in a week. Could you point me in a direction on how to explain to my parents I want to take care of one?
+NekoKawaiiSenpai Here's a pretty good article on handfeeding finches. www.finchinfo.com/breeding/handfeeding.php It will learn to feed on its own. While they can fly around after being handfed and tame, it's good to have a cage so they have a safe place to stay when doors are open, cooking, etc unsafe conditions for a free flying bird are going on. It is a commitment to take care of one, but can be quite rewarding. If you have the time because you're out of school for a while, hopefully your parents will give you the chance to try.
+Roy Beckham I will be out of school around the time it hatches. How do you take it out of a nest that has a closed top without hurting any of the other, if any, baby finches or the the one I will get?
Thx the finch mom is sitting on the eggs that's still in there but the baby bird is under there too is it ok? Cause when the baby birds mouth is open the mom does seem to care. We bought I think is egg seed or something it's yellow the petsmart people said that it's more softer then the seeds. Will the mom feed the bird?
Yes, the mom should instinctively feed the young one. Just give them the privacy to do their thing. If the baby is still begging, then it has strength and is likely being well taken care of.
Cool my dad doesn't let me put it in a quiet place but he says that it's going to be very scared and it will NOT feed it. But I still said that is should be in a quiet place. On the internet said that too.
Where you get that syringe? And how many hours should I feed new borns?Just in case my birds don't feed them.Their first parents and I know they will fail at times.i know they will succeed one day,And what about the formular?
Hey im not sure if you still answer these questions but please do I have one baby zebra finch I believe it's a day or 5 old? Im not sure because there in a volière and mom and dad zebrafinche where taking care of it 2 days ago the zebrafinche mom escaped. She didnt come back. Dad zebrafinch has been taking care of the little one (he is also going afther a other female). He feeds it (enough I guess). This morning I touched the little baby (to see if it was dead) it was alive but cold. The dad sits on the baby ive seen it but also goes away for a long time. Can this be because he doesn't have a female to raise the baby together? What should I do? Get the baby out or leave it in the volière so the dad can feed it?
this has probably already resolved itself, but the father will usually take care of the young on his own, but if he doesn't seem to be doing the job you can help out. Sometimes I just offer supplemental feeding to help out the single parent or pair if they are not that good. Feed them like in the video, but return them to the nest. If he just abandons the nest, then you have fewer choices.
Roy Beckham Thank you. To give you an update: one morning when I Went to check up on the baby I thought it was doing weird. It was very weak. Because I had to go to school and there was no time to get the baby out and run for supplies. I decided to get everything I Needed afther school and then take the baby away from it's dad. I had everything ready but when I Went to get the little guy out i saw it had passed away already. I still thank you for your reaction. he was just really doing half of his job. What happend wasnt fun. But next time i know what i can do to help them. Thank you for that. Can I still ask one more question? Can a zebrafinch mom or dad raise a baby alone?
I've successfully hand fed 3 zebra finches, but each time it was because they were tossed from the nest. One of my zebra finches is sitting on 10 eggs, 2 of which hatched 2 days ago. I would like to hand feed at least 2 or 3 of them to have a few more tame finches. I was thinking of removing a few of them from the nest but wondering when I should do that ideally. I was thinking of removing them at around 8-10 days old. Any thoughts on that?
How many days old should they be before I start picking them up to feed them? I'm assuming that picking them up starts the imprinting / bonding process. I handled one of the three finches much more than the others and she was much more bonded to me than the others, but she was several weeks old before I held her in my hand. Can I start holding them at 8-10 days old? or is that too young?
my male and female started to attack their baby, the baby is about 21 days old, it hadn't come out of the nest until today and now it has wounds all over its back and head and was in danger of loosing the one eye. I had to take it out, i got a hold of some formula, and have been feeding it using a very small spoon and its been eating exceptionally well. my question is how many times does it need to be fed, and how much would it eat? it doesnt eat by itself, but does drink a bit, i have put some seeds in the cage in case, is there anything else you could suggest i do?
You've probably figured everything out by now, but you probably fed it every few hours. Feed it as much as it will take. Weaning will take a few weeks. Keep the seed in the bottom of the cage and it will slowly learn to eat on its own. Don't be fooled by the bird play with the seed and thinking that it is eating enough. You may have to supplement the feeding for a while.
I had gotten hold of a dropping pipette and just cut the tip shorter and fed it with that maybe three or four times a day, when the crop emptied completely, since the other birds had taken all the feathers off of the poor baby I could see the crop. It started eating egg food by itself about two weeks after we separated it and she finished the tray daily! But still I kept feeding the formula because it needed every source of nutrients to grow back all those feathers and become healthy again. We were worried about loosing the one eye but, fortunately the little girl is fantastic now! She only started eating the seeds about two weeks ago, her feathers all regrew, the only ones still coming back are the feathers on her head, because the large wound on her head took a while to heal properly. Her beak is changing color and she is really friendly, she loves sitting on my head!! We put her back with her parents on Monday (we took their nest out) and they are all fine, no conflicts between any!
+Arbaz Shah I acually just used a small heating pad in a box. I used lots of towels to keep the birds away from the heat. They actually stayed in a little plastic cup with paper towels. I kept a towel over the top of the box to keep the birds from getting out as they grew older and to keep in the heat. The lowest setting was more than good enough.
you'll see the container on the table. It's lafebers. I like that brand since it is rice based, and others are often corn based. Other hand feeding formulas will work too.
they are not as fragile as they appear. In fact, these were abandoned by their parents and tossed to the floor. so they fell 4-5 feet to the ground (not hard, but still...)
+Henry Adriel (latindude001) It depends upon what I'm doing. I do sometimes provide supplemental feeding if the parents are still taking care of the chick, but maybe not doing a good enough job. Those chicks stay in the nest. In the case of the chick in this video, he was abandoned by his parents and I had to take over. I used a heating pad in a box with some towels to keep the chick warm, but not hot.
+Roy Beckham you should make a video on how you do it . It would be a great help just in case we end up in this kind of situation where the parents leaves their babies.
I hand fed a zebra finch baby three month ago. I never thought he would make it but he survived and is a healthy pretty finch today.
I wish this video would have popped up in my timeline three month earlier. I would have been less scared to feed him by hand.
The baby is so small. I love how it knew that was food and it opened it's mouth. I love it!
Beautiful video
thank you for showing I used to have fences wondered just how small the little darlings actually were so soamazing
I love your basic instructional video (no loud music, children screaming in the background), very professional and well done.

I agree
@R3db4dh4ir It is a commercial handfeeding formula. Like baby food for birds. It is Lafeber's baby bird formula.
I really liked your video. I am also planning to hand feed a zebra finch chick. Wish me best of luck.

Every couple of hours when they are young. A little later as they get older. Watch their crop to see when to feed.
That's the food. Birds hold their food in a "sack" on their neck called a crop. It goes from there to their stomach. It allows a bird to eat a lot of food and digest it as they need to.

I work at a wildlife rehab center and in my experience your finches crops appear to be overly filled which is worrisome.

If he just abandons the nest, then you have fewer choices.

Thank you.
How much do I feed them peer feeding
I've successfully hand fed 3 zebra finches, but each time it was because they were tossed from the nest. One of my zebra finches is sitting on 10 eggs, 2 of which hatched 2 days ago. I would like to hand feed at least 2 or 3 of them to have a few more tame finches. I was thinking of removing a few of them from the nest but wondering when I should do that ideally. I was thinking of removing them at around 8-10 days old. Any thoughts on that?
That actually works better than starting right after hatching. Just before the eyes open is usually a good time.
Usually about the time the eyes are ready to open. This gets them past that tiny stage and able to feed better. 8-10 is just fine.
very nice
my male and female started to attack their baby, the baby is about 21 days old, it hadn't come out of the nest until today and now it has wounds all over its back and head and was in danger of loosing the one eye.
Ogni quanto tempo fa mangiare i pulcini?
where did u keep him warm a lamp or a brrooder
+Arbaz Shah I acually just used a small heating pad in a box. I used lots of towels to keep the birds away from the heat. They actually stayed in a little plastic cup with paper towels. I kept a towel over the top of the box to keep the birds from getting out as they grew older and to keep in the heat. The lowest setting was more than good enough.
tjank u very much
What kind of food you are giving them.,beautiful
you'll see the container on the table. It's lafebers. I like that brand since it is rice based, and others are often corn based. Other hand feeding formulas will work too.
how did you pick it up without hurting it and without the mother freaking out?
they are not as fragile as they appear. In fact, these were abandoned by their parents and tossed to the floor. so they fell 4-5 feet to the ground (not hard, but still...)
Thx for the edvice. It would be cool if my female finch was alive. She died yesterday
Do you put them back in the nest or if not how do you keep them warm?
+Henry Adriel (latindude001) It depends upon what I'm doing. I do sometimes provide supplemental feeding if the parents are still taking care of the chick, but maybe not doing a good enough job. Those chicks stay in the nest. In the case of the chick in this video, he was abandoned by his parents and I had to take over. I used a heating pad in a box with some towels to keep the chick warm, but not hot.
+Roy Beckham you should make a video on how you do it . It would be a great help just in case we end up in this kind of situation where the parents leaves their babies.
