06/08/09: Handfeeding Zebra Finches and Gouldian Finch

The zebra babies are now 36 days old and very cute! They are fully feathered and taking little flights. The gouldian is younger, but the feathers are just beginning to open and he cerainly makes his wishes known when he is hungry! They're a lot of fun to feed and doing great.

I use an Aviquarium, but they are no longer made. YOu might be able to find one on ebay. It's a unit that fits on an aquarium and the heat is thermostatically controlled.

How do you known when to start feeding the babies zebra finches

I would never handfeed a finch unless it's the only way to try to save its life. I much prefer to let Mom and Dad do the job. Sometimes, though, the parents will reject the babies or just can't get it right, and then I will give it a shot if needed. While I've been successful with many finches, I've also lost many. So it's really best to leave it to the parents if possible.
