      nice review. one of the big selling points that you didn't focus on, is that it's a unique phone. most people get either an iphone or a samsung and while they don't look identical you could not say either of them look unique. since there is not any real strong negatives to the keyone, (the smaller screen doesnt mean you can't consume media on it, it's just not the USP), the real question is do you want to have the same phone as everyone else, or do you want to be different?

    The irony in the placement of this young lady is appreciated Android Central. Many people would assume this phone is strictly for aging professionals but ignore the fact that many younger people might actually enjoy it as well. Nice job highlighting the pros and cons and I liked the day-to-day format as well. Keep it up!

    Now that's an original review. As a long time user BlackBerry user, I love the younger perspective. Couple of notes for you. 1. Go into display settings to change the open app layout you're not happy with. 2. The keyboard scroll issue is something I've not encountered on the Priv or Passport? Since other reviewers with preproduction KEYone's haven't noticed this, I'm thinking it's just your device. Should be smooth as butter. 3. Use the finger print sensor instead of the left hand power button to unlock device 4. Learn to flick to type instead of pushing the desired predictive word. (It learns how you write after a few weeks). Again, thanks. Really good stuff!

    You don't need to press the power button to wake the screen. You can double tap the screen to wake it up or use your fingerprint to unlock your screen. But great review!

    • @doddsyist
      @doddsyist 7 років тому

      Mashud Sikandar double tap is obsolete on the keyone because the fingerprint scanner is so fast on the keyone. power button is best used to lock the device and hang up calls (needs to be well placed out of the way to avoid dropping calls).

    • @MashudSikandar
      @MashudSikandar 7 років тому

      I get your lock button argument, but quite don't understand hanging up calls bit. Hanging up calls, you press the red end call soft key in the phone UI.

    • @doddsyist
      @doddsyist 7 років тому +1

      Mashud Sikandar power button to hang up is a lot more convenient than a touch screen hangup. 1. you don't need to look at your device to hangup calls. number 2. you can open other apps and use them while talking on the phone then end the call without having to go back into the phone app. what this device needs is advanced interaction improvements. eg. put the phone face down to lock the device. and maybe lift the device to see the time/lockscreen notifications. those features exist on the priv, but not on the keyone. that said, the fingerprint scanner is so fast that the lift to wake feature is only a minor gripe. Hold to stay awake works.

    I think I'm one of the last dinosaurs that can't wait to get my hands on a real keyboard again. I just can't stand virtual keyboards and I've tried all types. The only other phone that I might wait for instead of the KeyOne is the Note 8 but I'm really liking the KeyOne reviews.

    Puzzling that she seemed to like so much of the phone apart from the security then at the end that and the keyboard is all she could recommend it on. The BlackBerry apps that it comes with make Android smoother imho. The shortcuts and battery life are fantastic! Great efficiencies just built in.

    I should be receiving mine today. I have no nostalgia for the keyboard as i used to actually find BB phones to be novelties that not everyone who had them really needed them, so i stuck to my Nokia. But back them there were a few varieties of phone shapes and sizes whereas these days they are all just slabs of glass. This is when I truly feel that BB phones shine the most and I'm willing to give it a shot. Super excited.

  • @michaelchen6191

    Cant deny the fact that the phone is optimized for usage via the larger battery chip integration and charge. I think that would be worth mentioning as a reason to purchase in addition to the other items you mentioned. But a great and fair balanced summary and one of the best out there. Great job.

    Very informative review..someone that has used the Keyone for a solid week and daily updates... a great idea! So many reviews seem to be presented by someone that has opened the box and started up the device and that's it.....I'm anxious for the Canadian release as I am certainly going to be ordering one of these devices. I was fortunate enough to get a hands on with it at the CB Meetup in Winnipeg in March and it is *impressive*. Once again great production Jacklyn I will be sure to follow you as you seem very unbiased.

    Reasonable review. a couple of things ontop of the misunderstood power button gripe. punctuation is more commonly used in a sentence than numbers so a top row of punction makes more sense than a row of numbers. the BlackBerry passport has a virtual row of punctuation (swipe down for numbers to appear). this device is not just for those that want a keyboard. The keyone is also for those that want programmable one click shortcuts that can perform their most repetitive daily tasks. The keyboard typing opinions need to be more practice orientated. Of course somebody who does something for years won't be as good when they try something different. Practice makes perfect.

    Nice review. I agree with the comments that it was refreshing, thorough, engaging, and well done. Did you try typing with the swipe up for the predictive text (as opposed to touching the predicted word on the screed)? I didnt look like it from the video, but it is a MUCH faster/more enjoyable typing experience when you swipe up towards one of the three auto-complete options. Ive been doing it so long on the passport, and priv that I never type out any full words anymore - the BB devices learn my most often used words and phrases and are now very accurate at predicting the correct ones, making me a faster typer than any of my non-BB using friends.

    The best Blackberry camera belongs to the BBPP which sports a 13 megapixel. That is the highest for which a Blackberry device has knocked out for a camera. I've taken amazing pictures, as a photographer, it's the person behind the camera who makes the shots look good, not just the "device". ^_^ great review by the way, it's interesting to hear a Millennial so interested and invested in a device that the generation before you was using. It baffles me day in and day out how I see anyone from 11-32 thumping and swiping away on their iphones, I can only wonder how difficult it would make life for anyone after G-X to use a device in today's world where everything is at your finger tips. When I use the Blackberry PPSE, for me it's like using the old type-writers in middle school and high school before computers came in and phased them out here in Toronto back in 1997. I hope you grow to enjoy the Blackberry KEYone as a tool and learning device that acts as an extension of the brain. I always saw Blackberry that way, and I hope it will continue in doing so for this generation. Once again, wonderful review and good personality.

    Good review Jacklyn,
    I think a lot of blackberry users will still like and keep the Passport as it runs the BB10 OS.
    Yes it's a odd screen with only a 3 row keyboard. Even as a 3 year old phone it holds it's own in terms of looks, speed and no nonsense operation.
    I wish other venders would go with a keyboard like the passport as this would be great.
    Of corse we could just keep a small laptop around... Aggggg.

    2:22, you can also swipe down on the keyboard to bring up special characters. Moving the keyboard down would probably affect the balance while typing.

Also, this is the first review where I saw the screen take giant leaps when scrolling with the capacitive keyboard. Wonder if that was unique to the app or, as you mentioned, a possible software bug.

    I was told some years ago that physical keyboard phones are superior for maintaining situational awareness - once your fingers have located the home row keys you can use muscle memory for writing the bulk of the text, this can't really be done on a screen keyboard as you naturally have to focus in on the virtual keys to position them in relative terms.
    I'm trying to find some good reference material on this but I think it's a very overlooked aspect of the keyboard phone; I think the whole notion of it being "antiquated" presumes that the virtual keyboard is progressive; it's not, it's just an engineering streamlining exercise (that dates back to the 80's actually).

    Well done Jacklyn!! Good review! And if that phone operates as fast as you talk ....good enough for me:-). But I'm old dude though! More importantly, I really miss blackberry! Thanks! And I reckon I'll end up getting it. If for anything, just to be different! Social media not big on my list, but like to read newspaper, text, send emails, book my work calendar etc. What do ya think?

    I think what you've got should be the retail version but not preproduction anymore. Coz we're able to buy this phone here in UK since May the forth. I've received a firmware update since I started using the keyone for work tho.
    After using this for a few days, I do feel the software on isn't fully optimised yet. Sometimes the keyboard shortcuts doesn't work on the home screen or reacts very slowly and the scrolling on the keyboard isn't that smooth all the time. Overall it's a great phone for me. The screen is big enough for Web browsing and watching UA-cam. But on software side, there're still quite a lot for BlackBerry to do.
