Even though it's a nuisance that you have to limit certain foods, it's good that you have recognised how they make you feel. I now notice when I eat a food that causes an issue. And I find that if I eat more carbs I get hungry sooner.
Dr Westman shows us how to carefully review Dr Saladino's path without resorting to insults, like so many of us seem inclined to do. Bravo, and thanks, Dr. Westman.
@@biggestsign so here’s the thing. I think Dr Westman didn’t get some of Paul’s ideas, and he also is pretty much focused almost entirely diabetes and weight loss, and that’s who he appears to be addressing as his viewing audience here. He unfortunately makes light of considering phytotoxins as “plants not wanting to be eaten,” and I think that spoke to a kind of narrow-mindedness on his part, though I’d not suggest Dr Westman is narrow-minded per se. I guess like some of what both guys are offering. Knowing that his audience is primarily diabetics and weight loss patients helps understand where he’s coming from.
@@JasonActualizationI don't view him as an amazing human being. It seems like a couple of studies changed his opinion and he didn't know about the science available when he was writing his book. He doesn't seem to do his research, doesn't seem to really talk to other physicians. Before he got off keto he should have talked to westman and he literally cites a study IN THIS VIDEO about 4 week trials of ketosis... That's literally the Atkins induction phase, or the time when people get keto flu. I have no degree I have no patients other than me and my wife... Yet I know how bad his research skills are. Another study was 2 weeks that he cited. The best argument he can make is after reversing severe disease on these diets over a year or 2 carb cycling might be beneficial based on lifestyle.
@@makaisenki - Anyway, someone's moral character doesn't necessarily say anything about their trained expertise. As Westman points out, Saladino has no trained expertise in nutrition studies nor did he, before changing his diet, confer with trained experts who use low-carb diets in treating patients.
@marthab7059. Remember, he is in America, and it's very easy to sue someone in America, so he has to be careful to phrase and choose his words very cautiously, using as many facts as possible.😉
I stopped listening to Paul years ago. He’s OCD and chases many different things. He obsesses one thing after another and was 100% convinced of each thing. Paul is a super smart guy, but you can’t follow him down one rabbit hole after another. He obsessively exercises as well. He can consume a lot of carbs because he is lean and not metabolically sick.
I feel a sense of rising anxiety just watching Paul these days, even with sound turned off… feels very similar to folks I’ve cared for who either were caffeinated in excess, or approaching hyperthyroid, or had an anxiety disorder. Of course I am happy to be wrong- it’s just the ‘feel’ I get, so it’s hard for me to watch him anymore.
That's an interesting comment; I get the impression that he's a bit self-obsessed and will cherry-pick data to confirm whichever rabbit-hole he currently is going down.
Three years keto- joint pain left. Got back on carbs (a lot of carbs multiple fruit smoothies a day ) - joint pain came back with a vengeance- I’ve been working out all my life I seriously thought there was something wrong with my joints and I was never going to work out again it was terrifying. One month on carnivore- joint pain is GONE. I’m back baby! Have a nice day 🥩🥓🍖
My Carnivore experience .... I am a 75yo woman. I don't do gym work or rigid exercise but i make sure i keep active and count my steps. I dont obsess about my weight or body shape like many seem to do this way of eating for ... my weight remains virtually the same at a good level most of the time. I began Carnivore 16 months ago to try and help myself for lifelong chronic asthma. My asthma puffers werent working and i was heading into having to start monoclonal antibody injections once a month. Apparently miraculous but with side effects. I wanted the miracle but not the side effects. I set myself to research for proven scientific papers on diet improving lung health and found one from Bonn University Denmark on the Ketogenic Diet being proven successful in asthma. Rats and humans 😮. Researching the Keto diet led me to Carnivore which looked easy to start and so I began in February 2023. Carnivore eating has changed my life. I have gone from being weak and weary to strong and stable. I haven't had one asrhma event in 16 months and that for me is a bloody miracle. I cant remember feeling this consistently well since a patch of time in my 20s. Believe me it hasnt always been easy eslecially in social situations or family gatherings but I followed what Dr Anthony Chaffee said .. if you fall just start again the next day. I mainly followed Dr Anthony Chaffee, Dr Paul Mason and the lowcarbdownunder website, Dr Robert Cywes, SaltnButterGal, and now yourself Dr Westman. I never stop researching although some are too radical for ms and i havw developed my own personal protocol. I've stuck to Carnivore most of the time but occasionally tried Keto. If I eat fruit I tend to crave the sweetness and go astray. I have a few veggies now and then. But honestly Carnivore eating suits my body the best. I have just been through a 75yo extensive health check and bloods and passed with no red flags. I look forward to this new lease on life with better lung health, better digestive health, glowing skin, no aches and pains, and imorovement in cognitive health. I hope to live a longer vital life having fun with my grandchildren. My advice .... don't give up even when you fall down, just begin again or change your food. I actually became sick of eating meat a couple of times so changed to chicken and lots of eggs. A couple of weeks later I was back to meat. I'm not perfect like most humans but just keep plodding along and enjoying this new ME.
Congratulations! And thank you for sharing your experience with carnivore. I am approaching 6 yrs carnivore and I can assure you that it keeps getting better. I am nearly 66 and in the best health of my adult life. I highly recommend you add Ben Bikman to your list of those you follow. Stay the course; you will reap more benefits with each passing year and live a healthy long life. Cheers!
I did so well for 6 months and I blew it and started eating fruit and I gained all my weight back. Now I’m back on carnivore day 5 and looking forward to feeling better😊
For me personally, as a former type 2 diabetic, I find I do best when I flatline my blood glucose levels. I can eat one pound of a fatty ribeye steak and my glucose level would rise less than 10 points one hour later and would be down to premeal level after 2 hours. I once ate 1 tablespoon of raw honey once while testing my blood sugar. My blood sugar went from 101 to 167 in 30 minutes. At 1 hour my glucose was 144. At 2 hours my blood glucose was 171. It went down some and then jumped even higher. I respect Dr Saladino, but I know I can not eat more than a few carbs per meal or my blood sugar levels go up. Tonight I ate 2 double hamburgers for dinner, both on 25 grams of carbs buns, for a total of 50 grams of carbs. I used 73/27 ground beef and I slathered mayo and organic catchup on the buns. My beginning BG was 107 and 1 hour after eating my BG was 116. I was scared my blood sugar would jump eating 50 carbs at one meal, but adding lots of fats help slow the speed of the sugar spike. I know this information is boring and uninteresting to most who read it, but for me, someone obsessed with flatlining my glucose levels, I'm impressed. But I'm not going to press my luck, I'm not going to break my body again. I plan to eat as close to zero carb as possible just like always. But I am thrilled to know that once every other week of so I can splurge and enjoy 2 big fat juicy hamburgers with real buns and still not spike my blood sugar. Everybody has different definitions of sugar spike, I consider a jump of more than 30 points a spike. Keep this in mind people, the average human body had 10 pints of blood. The amount of sugar, or glucose in the blood is about one teaspoon, 4 grams. Please understand that sugar is a toxin, too much will kill you. When you eat a high carb diet you overload the blood with sugar. Say you ate a bowl of heart healthy Quaker Instant Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal, before you add any butter or sugar, a 43 gram single serving packet contains 33 grams of sugar spiking carbs. Now add 13 more carbs for the 0% fat milk and that is 46 grams of pure sugar. This is 11&1/2 teaspoons of sugar. When you eat that bowl of heart healthy oatmeal you dump 11.5 spoons of sugar in your blood. Your body, fearing it is about to die from the poison, dumps loads of insulin into the bloodstream to grab the sugar, convert it to fat as quickly as possible and store it as fat. It does this so quickly the sugar rush you felt quickly drops to low numbers because the body is crappy at calculating how much insulin you need. So to err on the side of caution the body produces more than it needs and this causes your glucose levels to drop. This causes you to become "hangry" and interferes with ghrelin regulation in your body. This forces you to continue with the repeating cycles of carb load, fat storage, and repeat. I firmly think keeping glucose levels as flat as possible works best for me because I damaged my bodys metabolism. People who have never been obese may can eat 300 carbs a day, but I know I cant.
Thank you for sharing all that. I agree with you. I need to keep low-carb after decades of high carb/sugar diet. Throughout all of those decades of high carbs and sugar I did not have a weight problem. However, it did cause me to become insulin resistant. Now in my 60s I am paying the tab for that.
Saladino’s exercise regimen is beyond what the majority of us are even capable. Dr Westman, your approach is much better- COMMON SENSE + scientific evidence.
So is Shawn Baker's exercise regimen, but what's your point. Westman's 6 to 7 grams of salt intake in this video to offset having to ingest carbs is not only unnatural its ridiculous to not see how flawed that recommendation is....where was salt so readily available before grocery stores in nature?
If you go on the carnivore diet and finally get healthy, why on earth would you go back to eating in an unhealthy way!?! That's asking to get sick again.
I don’t think at this point any of these influencers know jack just like 👍 medical industry none of them really know what their talking about, just use your body and goes with what makes you feel healthy and alive with common sense tossed on top!
one of the best usual health advise i have ever heard is to walk 15 minutes after every meal. You can walk outdoor, indoor, at home, treadmill, wherever... This simple non strenuous activity helps reduce blood sugar after meal...
I agree that carnivore is a great elimination diet. Some can then add back healthy carbs once healed, some cannot. I stay low carb/keto due to glucose issues. But all must find their own path.
There is no such thing as healthy carbs. There are bad carbs and worse carbs. The simple fact is, you don't need them, so why eat them? If you choose to eat them, that's up to you. But don't for one minute think it's not bad. It is, but once you are informed, you are a grown adult and can do what you want. When you get sick again, we will be here with open arms, ready to welcome you back.
Yes, I agree. I think eliminate, heal, and then maybe one can add back in some healthy carbs and for some even around 100 total grams. I think what Paul has done is maddening though, he doesn't look like he is aging well either. I think he didn't get his electrolytes right and ate way too many organs. I am glad it is working for him but he is in the minority of how much he burns because he is so active. He has a huge following though and is unfortunately leading many down his path and it will get them sick again. :(
No, his comments are not reliable in this video. He cutout the part where Paul explained that our body makes glucose but it's not physiological enough for all of the body's needs and it has to convert some of the protein in the diet to make up the difference. The problem with this is that there isn't enough protein left over unless you're consuming massive amounts of protein. Westman has dad bod for a reason. Likewise, his recommendation of 6 to 7 grams of salt per day to offset electrolyte issues from not consuming carbs is a direct warning of ketosis not being a natural diet to humans...I mean where in the world did all humans back in the day (before grocery stores) find salt so readily available?? They didn't.
Same. It's still, overall, a very low-carb diet. Free from chemicals, and featuring nutrient dense, old variety fruits. Nothing is similar to anything from the shops.
Paul's new way of eating is fine if your metabolically healthy, but 95% of us aren't. And if you are, you won't be for long unless you exercise like a maniac to burn off all that excess glucose.
No it’s not. Pouring 1 lb of honey down the throat and liver every day is nonsense. No one in entire history of humanity ever ate like him, in fact no life ever walked on earth ever ate like him. He has a big buffer to keep him okay, but sooner or later, all kinds of problems will surface, maybe 5 years, maybe 10 years, but he definitely will suffer from his inhuman diet.
@@LittleRadicalThinker Oh yah for sure. I was just saying if you're still metabolically healthy, sure go ahead, but once you're not, it's not gonna be pretty. haha
Carb creep is a danger here. I was diabetic diagnosed 21 years ago. Cutting out carbs and now carnivore. Diabetes is in remission. I had to cut out fruit especially here in tropical Malaysia. We binge on fruit! That has to stop
Thanks for sharing about your tropical context, wonderful to hear your personal experience here. My latitude is high thirties, so a bit further out from the equator. I have been wondering about latitude, sun exposure and eating patterns for quite a while now, still continuing on with more reading ...
@@biohack9540 Everything. Yes, Jack too. There is lots from Richard Johnson's group that intersects with seasonal cycles too. Jack has been getting a remarkable number of things right, anyway.
Most of our fruit goes to the chickens, ducks and geese - more eggs! We do eat lemons, oranges and grapefruit in moderation, and native berries (lower in sugar). We also have non-commercial types of banana, they seem OL in moderation too. In season, ripe from the plant, no chemicals. I first got sick in Malaysia on vegan/vegetariam - I think due to the very high seed oil consumption plus reliance on noodles/rice / very processed foods.
@tropicalfoodgarden3668 yes us too. Vegetarian diet is high in plants and carbs and we taught to eat veggie oils reduce fat and exclude meat. No wonder we all git sick.
Thank you so much for reviewing this video. I have seen a lot of posts on the internet from people who have been derailed from a healthy Keto diet because of listening to Dr. Saladino’s videos. If someone has a carb addiction the worst thing they can do is try to add honey or fruit, it can take a long time to get back on track after triggering this addiction by adding honey or fruit. I know for myself even the slightest amount of sugar in any form can have disastrous results.
@@kathleenhockin8057 I got derailed by Dr Saladino as well and it took me 3 months to get back on track on the carnivore. I had lost a lot of inches. Now I’m 3 weeks carnivore and looking forward to losing those inches again plus reducing worry and stress
I find it interesting that a surfer would blame a carnivore or keto diet for the physiological adverse effects of not consuming enough salt. If there is anyone who will burn through electrolytes, it’s someone who is an avid surfer. 😂😂
This reminds me of the test we did at school when I was very young. We placed a hollowed out half orange (so skin only) in a bowl with salt water either in the orange or bowl and fresh water in the opposite place. Through osmosis the fresh water went through the skin to equalise the salinity.
I walk and walk like there's no tomorrow in the summer Texas sun and eat about 10g salt a day plus I eat my meat rare (more salt and also taurine) and take additional taurine, since it is known to balance electrolytes. I have no electrolyte issues at all. He probably needed to take additional taurine and also drastically up the salt.
Dr Westman, I appreciate your gentle approach and your helping us examine what the studies actually say as well as putting statements in context. This is rare on the internet. I don't know anyone who surfs for 4-5 hours everyday. I probably live in the wrong part of the world.
As always Dr Westman you did a stellar job of being the voice of reason and common sense. I think perhaps many people take the studies he sited as gospel, but you cut through the nonsense. Thank you for educating us through the years.
I am a man who has a job that requires full body, intense exertion for, often, hours at a time. I have done this job for 37 years. I started the carnivore diet 7 months ago because of the pain/inflammation reduction results claimed by those on said diet. The desired results I was looking for were realized 4 days after beginning carnivore. Im 55 years old and my rigorous exertions have taken their toll over these many years. Now I am virtually pain free. Another "side affect" of my new diet is after about 3 weeks I was doing my very difficult job and suddenly noticed that I was not becoming fatigued at the rate I had before when I was a carb gobbler. I noticed my heartbeat was slower and less intense during heavy exertion and found I could continue working far beyond what I could before; about twice as long before requiring a rest period. So it does, obviously, take some time for your muscles to adapt to burning ketones instead of glucose. And that time will vary. So if you start carnivore or keto be patient, the benefits WILL come. By the way I am an Arborist. I specialize in large tree pruning and removal. Coming up on 38 years in the business. Carnivore has shaved at least 10 years off my current age. I have never experienced a method, fad, supplement or process that claims extraordinary results and actually delivers, and Ive been motivated to try many, many of them. The ONLY one that has delivered, in spades +, is the simplest, cheapest, most intelligent and authentic...Carnivore!
All I know is that at 79 and 12 weeks on carnivore ,with the odd slip , I am sleeping through the night no need to p. Not hobbling around on sore ankles , no backache every day , waking up with a zest for life , whereas before I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired , and my blood sugar has gone down from danger levels to good , shopping is easier , less washing up , lost a little weight , I’m carrying on
Very point on discussion Dr Westman. Context matters. Young metabolically healthy athletes can eat more carbs. For those of us with diabetes a ketogenic diet is not some whimsical live forever experiment it is a life saving therapy
For me, “a little fruit” leads to a 3 month carb and sugar orgy. Same as a lite beer would lead my father to a 3 month bender ending in a trip to the emergency room and rehab. RIP 🪦 dad ❤
Yeah. Saladino started by reintroducing small amounts of carbs. But once he rationalized that, he was soon feasting on fruit and honey every day. One can technically be carnivore as long as one is eating at least 70% of animal foods. Does that still describe Saladino? I don't know. I suspect he is eating more than 30% carbs at this point.
I thrive with fruit and beer, and some animal products. I'm a landscape contractor,… and I surf shortboards, when I surf, which is only occasional due to lifes priorities. I'm age 56. I've got to be careful with me diet to keep prime. Balance is key for me. Carnivore is not balanced for me, and is seasonally variable,…. but I eat animal products nearly every day.
Information are to be based on facts and evidence as Dr Westman always presents. He is the clinical expert in this field so he is the best person to listen to. Respect Dr. Westman that you have an innocent and honest face that is helping a number of people to improve their health conditions.
Always question and do research yourself rather than believe an expert ! They are just people who learnt stuff that other people learnt and taught others. Its all in books with experiences of your own.Idolising doctors is dangerous, look at what happened during Covid! Just people .
Well done Dr Westman a clear and unbiased breakdown of facts etc. I don't know much of Paul Saladino, but he reminds me of myself when I go into self doubt as to whether I'm doing my lifestyle choice correctly, this leads to confusion and backtracking. I listen to the real experts who I know have years of clinical experience in their field of nutrition.
This is exactly what I do to myself, totally second guess myself and psyche myself out. I just have one shit day, tell myself keto is making me unwell, cheat and remember what unwell really is and then when I eventually get back on track end up having to slog that first week out again 😅
several of his symptoms are also symptoms of too much copper he was advocating eating liver EVERY DAY as well as promoting dehydrated liver supplements, which he said was taking, so it seems quite likely he was overdosing on copper
Yes, I’ve experienced issues with too much organ meat and mineral supplements. Once I backed off those, I felt better again. Sometimes we have to look at little details to change on our diet instead of throwing out the entire diet.
@@parapoliticos52 - He has never been a practicing doctor. He went straight from medical school to being a UA-cam influencer. And soon after that he started a supplement company. His entire bank account and lifestyle is dependent on his business. That is different than other practicing doctors on UA-cam who are simply offering advice without making money from it.
I watched and commented on the video he made. First time Paul ever commented back to me. I agree that if the meat fruit and honey worked for him that's great! However, I have always felt my best on a meat, eggs and fermented dairy diet.
Wow… You are special. You are a Unicorn in the “ Every longterm carnivore I know / Zero Carb “ line of 🧘 yogis. You don’t fit in their dogma. I suspect he is intrigued by your story.
I've been Carnivore now for almost 3 yrs. I started running into electrolyte issues and had inflammation of the kidneys when all of by body fat was gone. In order to maintain my weight , I had to start eating 20 carbs a day of fruit. In addition to that, I started taking an electrolyte supplement. I feel better but the fruit constantly makes me crave more carbs!
Be sure you’re getting enough fat. Maybe eat more fatty meat and eggs and butter. Seems to keep my weight where I want it without effort. In fact I had to start fasting to keep my weight down at one point and lower the lbs of meat. Wanting to stay lighter. Add some rebel ice cream if all else fails. Stuff is like a calorie bomb. What I eat if I need to feel full - the full fat helps me sleep too. Not for people trying to lose weight necessarily- I have lost weight eating it though. Ketosis is magic.
I was carnivore for over 4 months, lost over 25 lbs., felt fantastic, and was thin & fit without any exercise. 5'10" - 132 lbs. You do the math. Was this real? I unfortunately suffered a hernia from a work related accident one week after my journey began. Fast forward to the surgery and they tell me to stop eating steaks everyday during recovery. I thought it sounded like bad advice. How was Gelatin & Pudding supposed to speed up recovery? But, alas, I'm not a doctor and the fear of any complications scared me into compliance. I immediately felt bloated, old aches & pains returned, started snoring again, my heart rate skyrocketed, and my blood pressure went through the roof. I told myself it's just 2 to 3 weeks of recovery. 15 lbs. later, in the wrong direction, I am almost done with recovery, but definitely done with eating that way. Enjoy your fruit & honey Paul. I'm gonna eat a ribeye covered in salt.
Well unless they have conclusive evidence. There is no evidence either way that carnivore is a forever diet. I believe it's part of a seasonal cycle of eating
Thanks to the algorithm Gods this popped up on my feed. What a wonderful find. Balanced, reasonable and evidence based rebuttal with civility throughout. Great to see this approach and hope others take note.
I saw Dr. Saladeno’s interview with Dr Berry where they disagreed about intake of addition carbs. Dr Berry was against it stating it would take most people out of ketosis, and get them carb addicted again. Dr Saladeno stated he surfs for 3 hours. Ok as a person who has surfed you burn a lot of calories surfing and 3 hours a day, plus other physical gym workouts, is why he can consume additional carbs. Dr Berry stressed that for most people on carnivore keto or low carb, introductions carbs is a BAD idea. Thank you Dr Westman for looking at some of these youtube videos and where some of the information is not as scientific as we wish. I do carnivore 7 months now, with added yogurt and whey protein because when i started carnivore i lost too much weight, and needed to gain weight back. I eat about 5-6 eggs daily with a 26oz 750gram ribeye steak. this diet is working for me but i am still monitoring my blood work and i didn’t start carnivore to fix anything, i did it just to lose weight, but the benefit is most all my joint pain is gone, i lost about 40lbs in 3 months, and i have better energy levels than i remember when i was very physically active in the military at 35 and now i am 52. thanks again for you deep dive on this video. I am learning a lot form your channel.
I started last week and am eating twice day 16oz top sirloin 4rggs, sausage and chicken 4 eggs I’m only concerned because I’ve lost five pounds in week I’m in excellent shape 5’9 160 should I just give it more time to kinda reset
Carnivore has been the best thing for me. It didn’t solve all my issues - I needed to add Dr Brownsteins protocol for iodine to improve my thyroid problem - but I have had so many improvements. Just doing keto was a great start, but it wasn’t until I went to carnivore that I really started feeling better and functioning better. High fat carnivore has been much better for me, but maybe as my thyroid continues to improve I can do leaner protein. Don’t know, but for now, I’m the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been.
Why would you want leaner protein? What’s the goal? Lean protein converts to blood glucose. That’s why we eat fatty meat. Keeps the sugar spike down and healing ketones higher.
Listening to the 'keto causes thyroid probs' thing, I noticed the concern was conversion of t4 to t3. What also slows that conversion is low copper intake and if you consume a lot of meat which is sorta high zinc, the zinc also competes with copper which makes low copper even lower. My suggestion to be on the safe side is take some copper supplements occasionally, you need that to compliment iodine as well. Also you need selenium to compliment idoen, maybe slap down one or two brazil nuts occasionally, those things are like selenium vitamin pills. I have a strong suspicion thyroid probs in keto are often due to a lot of zinc and not enough copper causing t4 to t3 conversion probs and that can so easily be solved. You could also eat a a lot of mussels or some of the few foods that have a lot of copper but I just go with the pills since those few foods are expensive and/or not my favorites.
@@OnceUponaTimelinewow I'm intrigued. Thank you. Explains why potentially out thyroid could be effected and importance of seafood like muscles. Much appreciated
Loved listening to Lillie Kane who accidentally went carnivore, when she was trying to eat super healthy: mostly high protein with fats...but she found that she periodically had to add in some blueberries or broccoli...but she was going for health. So very interesting that her diet driven by health is basically what you, Dr. Westman prescribe ,is what she eats...sometimes zero carb, sometimes low carb... love a reaction to her post!
Dr Saladino went on Carnivore to deal with autoimmune issues. I don’t think he was ever metabolically challenged. After selling a ton of books he moved to a tropical climate and stays incredibly active including a lot of surfing. He’s an active, healthy man…so adding some carbs and honey probably doesn’t have nearly the negative effects they will for those of us who are active and/or not healthy. Many of his justifications are based on “his experience”. His N-of-1 is his…not anyone else’s.
This! Also if you want to prove any point you can find the literature to prove your point. Case and point Harvard’s study that “proves” that meat cause Type 2 diabetes. Me, the sight of bread will cause me to gain weight. Adding fruits will cause the same.
Saladino surfs 2 hours a day for pleasure, then he works out and walks everywhere, and is gut healthy so he can have these carbs. I tried his Animal Based diet and my ulcerative colitis and weight started coming back. And many of the fruits caused bloating and gas. So I obviously had more healing to do before trying to have some fruit. And he did much healing doing carnivore before adding the fruit. So everyone is different. I respect his clean eating, that is the main thing. But fruit juice to me is not natural at all. Ancient ancestors were definitely not squeezing their fruit to make a glass of juice to enjoy for brunch. LOL!
@Jigmaster55 tha carni clan is so lost about carbs, yes its pretty obvious our past brothers n sisters weren't eating pasta cereal and crackers, I didn't for one second mention they were, but fruit potatoes roots and more fruit then meat when it was available were definitely on the menu, eating ribeye and butter all day is so far away from our nature, you guys crack me up, get some more fruit in and let them carbs run to your brain and feed it for once, carnivore eaters speak so slowly and what you guys think is balanced energy from fat is actually just low energy from starvation from sugar
@@TheLeon1032 no it isn't, we don't require sugar- and the 4 grams of glucose our body "needs" can be converted very easily by the liver from protein, so , yeah, no such thing as essential carbs, there just aren't
@@TheLeon1032 my ancestors are northern european, not much in the way of plants- archaelogically there wer some wild radishes, some berries, and cabbage and not available all year- winter is a thing there- that's not a lot of carbs, and they survived for hundreds of years eating this way
Thank you so much for this video! I stopped watching Paul Saladino when he started eating fruit and honey. Finding out now that was a good idea, because if he wasn’t smart enough to diagnose his own symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance, (which is keto 101 at this point) he shouldn’t be giving nutrition advice to anyone! We have these electrolyte discussions in our support group nearly every week with newbies. I’m floored he couldn’t figure out that is why he was having heart palpitations.
@beechbonanza Track in Cronometer. Dr Stephen Phinney says 300-500mg of Magnesium, 3000-4000mg potassium and 3000-5000mg sodium per day. We've also seen 4700mg per day of potassium recommended or even higher at 7000-10,000mg of potassium. The higher your levels of consistent ketosis, the more you flush electrolytes. Magnesium and sodium are stored by the body but potassium is not so it is one of the most important things to put in daily.
Thank you Dr Westman! I just saw Saladino’s video and was feeling pretty confused. I even yelled out loud,”Who should we trust?” again! I am prediabetic, obese, and am a heart patient. I can’t keep messing around with my health. So, I’m so glad to see your input about this video and will stay the course with my “prescriptive keto” plan you teach in your book. I’m going to shut out the rest of the noise…including my local physician and cardiologist that think keto/carnivore are terrible for me. I also learned to say I’m on the modified Mediterranean diet like you suggest and that pretty much closes that conversation. Thank you for guiding us back to health.❤
Yes. You have to learn your doctors' safe words and trigger words. Don't use their trigger words. Use their safe words. Say, "Modified Mediterranean Diet" NOT Keto Diet or Carnivore Diet.
I read his book. It is very good and helped me to transition from the broader clean ketogenic diet to carnivore earlier this year. Excellent explanation of whyt it is better to sprinkle more than add fruit.
I have nothing to loose, following 90% carnivore. All my life I was a low fat/high carb diet, including 4 years of being a vegetarian. Had an ill health since I was 20. I am 65 yo F, my digestive screwed big time. On carnivore diet for nearly 5 months, lost weight and my forever heartburn is gone. I am planning to stay put on this diet. Still keeping my black teas w/ sugar... yep, as an emotional support, it's cultural and hard to quit. But sure planning on quitting eventually all sugar.
Even if I end up the “Carnivore Omega Man” (last carnivore on earth) I have no intention of changing regardless of what Paul “Click-baiter” Saladino says. It worked for me as I achieved a 150-lb weight loss over 12 months, it has worked for me as I have sustained all of that weight loss for more than two years now, it is what powers my daily strength training program, it is what I at home with for the rest of my life. My only regret about carnivore is not starting on it decades ago.
I appreciate the car at idle analogy very much, im just an old country boy hotrod builder bodyman with a self caused bad heart at 51yo. Turning up the idle to a wide open throttle is hard on the whole car especially the engine everything wears out faster. I turned up the wot for most of my life being a workaholic and perfectionist i used meth as a high octane additive to my engine/heart. Thats why i started carnivore, not to loose weight but to heal everything i messed up. I found your videos so helpful because i have always researched everything, im a problem fixer and a debunker guy never take what someone says as facts without checking the sorce. I have the same heart problems as Kerry from the proper human diet, hes the reason i started 2 months ago my body has started healing itself and im constantly listening to stuff like this guy and trying to decide what to do. Your videos are so valuable the way you stop and explain why there wrong or right is so easy to underst . I am completely off all the heart meds and the bloodclot meds because they were killing me i was eating a can of beats a day and cyanne pepper in a drink mixture for the bloodclots for 2years before i started carnivore. I stopped doing that when i started. But am scared that i still need that for the clots and heart . Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Im not try to heal for myself but to stay hear as long as possible for my surprise 4yo daughter that showed up right after i found out my heart was bad.
It’s wonderful to feeling great after two years on the Keto diet. Losing 20 kilos and resolving my prediabetic issue is a remarkable achievement! Combining Keto with carnivore elements gave me this satisfying result. I´m sure both diets have their unique benefits.
All of Paul’s symptoms and reasons for adding back carbs were from not eating enough protein in 1 sitting to kick him out of ketosis, not to mention overdosing on copper from all the liver. He’s doing it wrong with the carbs.
I got way too skinny on carnivore, despite eating 2.5kg of fatty meat a day (5lbs+)for a year in which I went from 190lbs at 6'4 tall to a puny 169lbs. Back to adding carbs to a meat based diet I now regained my healthy weight , sleep 8 hours a night again (as opposed to 6 on carnivore) and feel much better.

Carbs are bad . Soon as I eat carbs I gain weight fast and feel like shit . I think keto with some fruits and vegetables. Absolutely no bread or pasta or sugar
I was Keto for three years and felt absolutely horrible. I went carnivore for a year and still felt tired all the time and nauseous. I added fruits and feel like a healthy young person at 56 yrs. old. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!
I eat a few carbs on a mostly carnivore diet. More than zero but less than 20g mostly from a few berries, dairy, even a few grains that might be in a good quality black pudding. I've noticed that I do sleep better. I'm personally not against a few carbs; I think humans are adapted to cope with some. The problem is that most people have way too much. I couldn't get even close to the amount of carbs that Paul eat but I'm also not as active as he is. There is no way I could eat anything incredibly sweet like honey. Paul demonstrates reductionist thinking when he says he still eats all of the organs and they no longer cause a problem when eating high carbs. Maybe the carbs counteract the effect but he might well still be eating too many organs. I quite like liver and eat it maybe once a week.
When he started describing his symptoms even an untrained non-professional like me figured out that was from not enough electrolytes! We don't need carbs. But to each his own as they say. I will follow Dr. Westman's advice.
Drawing conclusions from purely mechanistic explanations means we never need to do a study. I have much more confidence listening to a person that treats real people, like Dr. Westman or Dr. Berry.
As far as I know, Saladino has never practiced medicine. He graduated from medical school, but then went straight to being a UA-cam influencer and supplement salesman. Or that is my understanding.
I think it's funny that he keeps telling his points then also telling the answers to his problems. Like you need glocose but your body makes glucose. Why do you need it if your body makes it. Love your commentary on this one.
Reviewing Saladino's info gave me some great information on the electrolyte/insulin relationship. Thank you Dr Westman for this. I am adding more salt and electrolytes to my diet for nighttime leg cramps but probably not enough. Your explanation on sodium consumption helps alot!
Learn the definition of "addiction". For an addiction you need a negative side effect. Otherwise breathing air would be an addiction as well. Or eating meat. 😉
From keto three yrs ago to successfully go off all meds and reverse diabetes 2 to today's carnivore had some welcome surprise side effects.. lost sugar substitute addictions and many addictive behaviors like keto snacking at night! I was shocked....those factors alone really sold me! I am thriving and labs are right on target!!! Thanks Dr. Westman!
If a person is struggling with carnivore, it’s best to check with Drs (Baker, Westman, Berry, etc) or join a carnivore community and ask questions as they experience this way of eating.
None of the front runners have provided any information as to the problems surmounting from post surgical weight gain problems. It's all about weight loss.
I have been reading recently about fructose and glycation. Apparently fructose is 8 to 10 times as glycating as glucose, doesn't show up in labs commonly done, and because of it's different metabolism, isn't reflected in A1c. Some have commented that it shouldn't be of great concern because we don't eat that much if it. But for someone like Saladino, who talks about needing lots of fruit and, even worse, fruit juice, I have to wonder.
Yes, Bart Kay often say this. Also, Paul is aging terribly fast. Look back at some pictures of him. I believe it's his way of living i.e. eating lots of fruit and honey and doing tons of exercise.
Robert Lustig has great videos about fructose .Its ok with fruit ,because fibre mitigates its effects. In Processed carbs ,without fibre, fructose is detrimental and actually poisons Mitachondria !.
Fructose gets rapidly taken up by tissues like the liver, and thus the amount of glycation it gives rise to in the blood is irrelevant in the grander scheme of things. If the liver becomes saturated due to excess fructose consumption, then problems will almost certainly arise however, and the indicator light for that is an increase in triglycerides. Being highly active will burn intramuscular triglycerides and mask the metabolic problems otherwise elicited by excess fructose consumption.
I had muscle cramps for the first 4 months, since then (at 6 months now) none. I took electrolytes with magnesium and potassium during that time and started to wonder when it would stop, however, one day I woke up and realized I wasn't having those cramps anymore. It was awesome. I still have a lot of weight to lose and am having less pain from fibro/arthromyalgia. high blood pressure is gone after 40 lbs. and am no longer on the brink of diabetes. I am committed to my health and am very happy and satisfied with my food.
I listened to Paul Saladino and read this book too. Idk, I don’t remember Dr. Salidino saying anything about his problems until AFTER he quit Carnivore.
Its because he didn't talk about them at all. He is 100% making rationalizations about his carb addiction. I would feel bad for him if he wasn't recommending plants to his entire audience.
IMO Saladino was overdosed with Vitamin A and copper. Vit A and copper made him lethargic and "caused" other issues for him. Rather than realizing he was eating too much liver which was poisoning him, he instead added fructose to his diet which gave him the boost he needed. It's going to be a temporary fix in the long run. I have no doubt he felt better because the injection of fructose gave him energy. What he should have done is cut out the liver, add electrolytes and up the fat intake. He would likely have seen better results doing that. Saladino is an "all in" guy. I used to follow him and respected him. Not anymore. His nutritional answer to his issues is obviously flawed.
I do like my vegetables, meaning those defined in a well formulated ketogenic diet. I have recently added fasting which I’m loving. I feel so much better.
I literally thought I was going to die when I decided to add some fruit into my diet. I had some red grapes and cheese as a snack one day before hopping into the car for a 30 minute drive and about halfway into that drive thought I was having a heart attack. I felt nauseous, lightheaded, dry throat and mouth, and then my heart started racing. I checked my Fitbit and my HR was at 152 just sitting there driving. Talk about frightening. I almost drove myself to the ER. When I reached my destination I pulled out my phone to check my CGM and my glucose had a huge spike of +71. Granted, I should have taken proper steps to prevent that spike like not eating those grapes as a snack but rather after a meal and maybe not eating as many as I did, but it made me realize just how dangerous eating fruits can be. I’m not going to be making that mistake again.
Whenever I add back any carbs, I regret it the next day or two. Pain and energy level plummets and IBS symptoms return. Same with alcohol but add in depression. Really not worth it.
You are so kind to people who haven't yet researched their human body chemistry/biology in-depth. I admire this because a little knowledge can be dangerous but kindness causes that person to research further, ratther than driving them further from the truth. ❤❤❤
I was on carnivore doing beautifully then I decided to add in some fruit, watermelon, berries, complex carbohydrates, and I started to blow up again and get joint pain. I know what works for me!
Dr Westman consistently provides a scientifically informed and reasoned commentary on criticisms of a ketogenic diet. I always learn more about the metabolic processes involved with a ketogenic diet in Dr Westman’s thorough and well informed commentaries!
Let me guess before watching. He is making this whole point about HIMSELF and what HE does and completely forgetting that we all are trying very hard to reach as many of those needing nutritional help to fix any number of maladies and that over 80% of Americans are either over weight or obese. Great job Saladino. Just surf and eat fruit and honey all day and get off UA-cam. It's not all about Paul Saladino. It's about helping others get healthy. You've forgotten your purpose.
Perfect response. My life style, gender, geographic location, and health issues are totally opposite of Saladino. Nothing about his life style applies to my health, my activity level, or the amount of sunlight my geographic location provides me each day. I wonder how much the big carb industry paid Saladino to advocate for carbs again?
I love these vids. However, as an athlete, I was experiencing problems which went away immediately after adding just a bit of carbs back into my diet. I was also taking in 5-7 grams of sodium (and proper amounts of magnesium). So …. I appreciate Saladino putting some of this out there. Might help for some folks. As much as I wanted “no carb” to work, some carbs make a massive difference for me.
@@pabeader1941 3 months. I am still low carb relative to the average diet. The most obvious change for me was resting heart rate was elevated by 5BPM overnight when following strict keto (close to zero carb). As soon as I introduced a sweet potato in the evening, it calmed down again. None of this is proof of anything of course - just an anecdote that my body was a little off. (In a couple other ways too). I may try strict keto again in the future just to see if it happens again, but so far the bump in carbs helps.
@@cag19549 yes that’s the challenge for all of us on carb guidance. There is no doubt that people who are trying to correct years of poor nutrition and/or disease have a huge benefit from zero carb. @biggestsign Paul is an amazing human being, and it's unfortunate when folks are not able to sense that from him.

Paul is experiencing the Dunning-Kruger effect.
He looks very lonely too. Strange guy...
That's an interesting comment; I get the impression that he's a bit self-obsessed and will cherry-pick data to confirm whichever rabbit-hole he currently is going down.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your comment, it was very informative! Thanks for adding all of that detail.
way to go, bro! enjoy your 50g.
Very interesting, not boring to me. Thanks for sharing!

Saladino’s exercise regimen is beyond what the majority of us are even capable. Dr Westman, your approach is much better- COMMON SENSE + scientific evidence.
I think the logic there is that back in the day cavemen used to go to the gym every day
So is Shawn Baker's exercise regimen, but what's your point.

Absolutely right
I agree that carnivore is a great elimination diet.

All carbs stimulate blood sugar, and carb addiction. For t2d, a few gram of carb will trigger glucose spike.
Dr. Westman, you are awesome! This is a reliable comment!
I am 99% carnivore, but I allow myself some fruits in season from my garden which are 100% fully organic
Same here...once a year, when in season, home grown

Same. It's still, overall, a very low-carb diet. Free from chemicals, and featuring nutrient dense, old variety fruits. Nothing is similar to anything from the shops.
Can I get something out of your garden?😋😜😂
This is also ok but just because you grow them and they are organic, they still have carbs and fructose.
Thank you for always being the “real deal” Dr Westman
Paul's new way of eating is fine if your metabolically healthy, but 95% of us aren't. And if you are, you won't be for long unless you exercise like a maniac to burn off all that excess glucose.
No it’s not. Pouring 1 lb of honey down the throat and liver every day is nonsense. No one in entire history of humanity ever ate like him, in fact no life ever walked on earth ever ate like him.
I'm so glad you are in this space Dr Westman. Providing clarity amongst so many so called experts. Thanks!
Through osmosis the fresh water went through the skin to equalise the salinity.
drink japanese miso soup. enough solt.
He is embarrassing himself. Does he need an intervention? Seriously, this is very very bizarre reasoning.
@@lindawick455 bizarre to you yes, it seems it is you that's embarrassing yourself, eat some fruit and get thinking straight
Dr Westman, I appreciate your gentle approach and your helping us examine what the studies actually say as well as putting statements in context. This is rare on the internet.
I don't know anyone who surfs for 4-5 hours everyday. I probably live in the wrong part of the world.
He just qualified as a board certified psychiatrist too. UA-cam is his job now.
Amen!!
What were you eating before switching to Carnivore?
yes, what were you eating before? just typical SAD, and little or no thought about diet ?
All I know is that at 79 and 12 weeks on carnivore ,with the odd slip , I am sleeping through the night no need to p. Not hobbling around on sore ankles , no backache every day , waking up with a zest for life , whereas before I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired , and my blood sugar has gone down from danger levels to good , shopping is easier , less washing up , lost a little weight , I’m carrying on
way to go, bro!
Well done!
Congrats!!!
@@MarmaladeINFP He stated in another recent video that he eats 300 grams of carbs a day.

I think Dr Westman is the steadier hand on this subject, being a specialist who founded the Keto Diet program at Duke University Medical School.
This is exactly what I do to myself, totally second guess myself and psyche myself out. I just have one shit day, tell myself keto is making me unwell, cheat and remember what unwell really is and then when I eventually get back on track end up having to slog that first week out again 😅
several of his symptoms are also symptoms of too much copper
he was advocating eating liver EVERY DAY as well as promoting dehydrated liver supplements, which he said was taking, so it seems quite likely he was overdosing on copper
Yes, I’ve experienced issues with too much organ meat and mineral supplements. Once I backed off those, I felt better again. Sometimes we have to look at little details to change on our diet instead of throwing out the entire diet.
His symptoms are symptoms of not any money to be made in carnivore.

Where you getting enough fat?
Question if I may.
Doesn't it seem more likely that electrolytes were the problem and the carbs really weren't revelvant?

Thank you so much for doing this on this video specifically for our low-carb community.
I’m so glad to see that Doc Westman noticing Paul’s failings with is self prognosis.
LOL!
ancient ancestors certainly weren't eating only meat everyday either

How to fix chronic dehydration? I tried everything from electrolytes, more salt, less salt, more water, less water but nothing helps😢

All of Paul’s symptoms and reasons for adding back carbs were from not eating enough protein in 1 sitting to kick him out of ketosis, not to mention overdosing on copper from all the liver. He’s doing it wrong with the carbs.
Thank God for Eric Westman who, in this video, calmly unpicks the opinions of a rather self-obsessed Paul Saldino.
I got way too skinny on carnivore, despite eating 2.5kg of fatty meat a day (5lbs+)for a year in which I went from 190lbs at 6'4 tall to a puny 169lbs. Dr Westman you truly are amazing thanks for all you do
I just love this doctor's gentle nature. ❤
Why? - Attantion seeking, perhaps? There are already many carnivore doctors but he is the only ex-carnivore doctor, the pioneer 😂
It's clickbait to keep getting views!
dude did you watch the video? he literally explained his issues and why he switched to animal based
Drawing conclusions from purely mechanistic explanations means we never need to do a study.
He apparently could not conquer his carb addictions .
It was more of a desire
Learn the definition of "addiction". For an addiction you need a negative side effect. Otherwise breathing air would be an addiction as well. Or eating meat. 😉
What's the option? Basically on cooked animal products? No thanks. I thrive with fresh fruit, and animal products.
lol. carbs are for healthy people. only fat diabetic weaklings with addiction issues can't handle carbs.
Thanks Dr. Westman!

@@Lilbuddi1958 Professor Bart Kay has been very helpful.
But if like Saladino one thinks one is an expert, then there is no motivation to confer with experts before making changes.
Dr Westman, thank you so much for your all your intelligent comments on this video!💯❤
@@jaghadPhotoaging.
@@jaghad - A major effect of glycation is premature aging. That is precisely what we see with Saladino.
So good that you've done this video Dr Westman. I've had the hunch that many of his views are somewhat misleading.
Sounds like he's following the money. I don't pay attention to him
I had muscle cramps for the first 4 months, since then (at 6 months now) none.
This is sad: he is doing more harm than good....thank you Dr W.
According to who? You? How do you know?
Why? Carnivore diet does not work for everyone. Our bodies are not all the same. I'm glad he is being honest about it.
Thank you for sharing your maturity and wisdom. Saladino sounds like he is high on caffeine! Balance and moderation in all things. ❤️
I do like my vegetables, meaning those defined in a well formulated ketogenic diet. I have recently added fasting which I’m loving. I feel so much better.
Me too!
This is a terrific compelling discussion of diet and nutrition.
I would never trust anyone that talks faster than I can listen. Thank you, Dr. Westman, for your rational, comprehendible approach to this discussion.
Thank you for this video it was very helpful
Whenever I add back any carbs, I regret it the next day or two. Pain and energy level plummets and IBS symptoms return. Same with alcohol but add in depression. Really not worth it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. WESTMAN. I APPRECIATE YOU.
You are so kind to people who haven't yet researched their human body chemistry/biology in-depth. I admire this because a little knowledge can be dangerous but kindness causes that person to research further, ratther than driving them further from the truth. ❤❤❤
Thank you Dr Westman. You are so clear!
My N=1 is all that matters. Carbs do not work for me. Fat and Protein does.
@@tb54321ooooopo good point!!!!
@@tb54321 Pithy response! Agree w/ your logical skepticism. 😎
All about Saladino, this doesn't work for me: KetoVore gave me the life I never had. 🥩🥩🥩🥦
When you are going on 80 years of age, your lifestyle is different than when you were younger! My goals are different now, than when I was younger!
The answer to the question in the title: NO
Dr Salad just can't get away from his own name.
well apparently not because now he's thriving!
How long were you maintaining the low/no carb way of eating?
But when you start getting extremely optimized (i.e. very meticulous nutrition and high amounts of exercise) that pushes the limits… there is more nuance.
Yep, just like Paul, I feel better and have better bloodwork with some carbs. I am 6'2" and 160 pounds and exercise a couple of hours a day. Most of the folks on here are overweight and/or sedentary
@@junglecat7263 no. you are doing it wrong. carbs are deadly. everyone in the comments section knows more than you or Saladino about what's best for you. you poor thing. let us know when you're ready to come crawling back...
I absolutely love Dr. Paul Saladino because he was the first person I found who talked about the carnivore diet! I'm glad that he found something that works for him as well. I have been slowly easing into carnivore, and I can't wait to be 100% carnivore soon!
He's spitting out opinions.
ya, and he's always said as much in one way or another. He always says find what works best for you. what's your point?
@@Jojo-o6o6w if your talking to me I had diabetes.cornary artery disease with a bypass surgery a Lazer bypass a maze tx for afib all at the same time and I was only 58 years old years later I was 292 pounds in the hospital dying of heart failure they had me on 17 different medications. They pulled 22 pounds of fluid off me. I got of hospital I went on the ketogenic diet then to carnivore and I never looked back. I'm 69 years old this July coming up. And I'm still above ground. I didn't just have psoriasis and whatever else this Dr had so I know what I'm talking about I take meds for afib and htn and blood thinners pain meds for my severe diabetic neuropathy. This diet saved my life. And sugar caused 95% of my problems. This Dr knows nothing.
@@Jojo-o6o6w and I forgot to mention I lost 112 pounds over 18 months eating ano sugar.
