I believe this was the most played song in the late 20th century. They were righteous, brother! Bobby does a live solo version on the Andy Williams show of Unchained Melody. Possibly the greatest live performance ever imho. Try to get the longer version intro explaining why it’s a solo with Bobby and Bill talking to Andy before the actual performance. It’s amazing.
The reason given is a joke, though. They actually each did one solo per album and they flipped a coin to see who got to do Unchained Melody. Bobby (and the world) won the coin toss. No offense to Bill intended. His voice is amazing, but that song was better with Bobby's voice than anyone's.
As has been said: Unchained Melody from the Andy Williams Show is a must. Bobby (the blonde tenor here) sang it solo and hit some insane number of separate notes during the performance. It will blow your socks off. I marvel to this day that anyone was ever capable of singing like that and looking like they were having a conversation. Effortless. Most perfect singing I've ever encountered. To top it off, he wasn't feeling well, and was nervous because his parents were in the audience. Stellar vocals on Bobby Hatfield.
When you do "Unchained Melody" and you will, there's a slightly longer clip where they are introduced (Andy William show)and they explain how they came by their name etc
I love them both, but Bobby's voice....made in heaven. Unchained Melody live at Andy Williams show is a must. They were also so funny! Blue eyed soul at its best!
This was the most played radio & tv song of the 20th century and held that honor up until 2019 when the song EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE passed them up. They were a fantastic duo. The tenor Bobby Hatfield passed away 15-20 years ago. They got their name while singing at a place near a marine base in California , when a person got up and complemented them by saying “that was Righteous brother”. Other big hits you could react to UNCHAINED MELODY & YOUR MY SOUL AND INSPIRATION. this was a great reaction and you have a blessed day.
Wasn't a "solo effort". It was just a song written for one voice and Bobby was elected to sing it. He was not going out on his own. Also, Cher was a background singer for them at one point.
@@elizabethrogers8306 Please forgive me for using the term "solo" to describe a performance voiced by only one singer. I stand corrected; Bobby's effort was obviously and completely a "half duo." ffs, pedants gotta suck all the oxygen outta the comments.
"Soul and Inspiration" is another monster duet by the Righteous Brothers. Now, you've already reacted to Heart's cover of "Unchained Melody" but these guys initiated it and you'd be hurting yourself if you don't react to Bobby Hatfield's delivery on the Andy Williams Show from 1965.
The Righteous Brothers Version was definitely the most popular version!! BUT....Unchained Melody was already a hit in 1954-55 by Roy Hamilton. It was also featured in a Movie in the 50's about a Prisoner wondering if his Love would still be waiting for him when he was finally set free. Elvis Presley also Sang Unchained Melody at his Final filmed Concert Preformance on June 21, 1977 just weeks before his Passing. I would recomend you listen to Elvis's Live Audio Version first, Recorded on April 24, 1977 4 months before He Passed, as it was vocally his best : Elvis Presley Unchained Melody Official Lyric Video I would wait to see the Live filmed Concert Version until after you see the 2022 Elvis Bio Pic Movie 🎬 which I'm sure most Elvis fans would enjoy watching with you !! Everything about this performance was perfect… from the spotlighting to the slow walk up the stairs to put them at the same height to the surprise reveal of the backup singers showcased that gorgeous back and forth of those fabulous voices. One of my favorite videos to watch.
I'm convinced that the songs of the Righteous Brothers are at least in part responsible for the baby boom of the 1960s. This and "Unchained Melody" were huge hits - on the latter Bobby (the tenor) handled the vocals solo.
This was performed in front of a live audience and they edited out all the screaming and fainting fans. They were the greatest duo and we may never see the likes of them again but thanks to you and others' reactions you're keeping the legacy alive. Loved your genuine reaction and appreciation.
Yes it was. There is another UA-cam clip of this performance where the fans screaming wasn't edited out. Sometimes when people remix these old clips to isolate just the music the whole vibe is lost. Example: Medley singing "everything I do", where he's looking downward, he was singing to some girls that were screaming every time he moved. So sweet and what a thrill for them.@@doloreskrisky1670
This bridge was not in the song originally, but was added by Bill and Bobby. The writers intended them to “add their stuff “ to the song. Really great addition!
2 others that were hits by them, off the top of my head, are: "Soul and Inspiration" (1966) and "Rock and Roll Heaven" (1974) From 2 different decades, which is very apparent when you see these music videos.
Bill Medley take the lead in this song. They each have songs that they take the lead. Unchained Melody is basically a solo for Bobby Hatfield and is beautiful!

They were featured on a weekly music show called Shiindig I beliee this is from that show I hae the pleasure to see them live Soul and insperation is anther great song
I'm assuming there was an audience at this performance, because in those days, the only time you would see a live performance like this filmed (other than for a movie) would be on a TV show. There were lots of TV shows with pop music in those days....videos were not yet a thing!!

This is a clip from the TV show Shindig, where they were regularly featured. It's been remastered. You can hear the audience screaming in the unremastered video. They'd had a top 40 hit with Little Latin Lupe Lu, but this was their first #1.
Bobby only sang solo 1 second… but the moment he opens his mouth we instantly melt ❤ Look SalvoG reaction 😅. I think Spector undervalued Bobby’s power of empathy
Yes I agree. I think Spector totally undervalued Bobby. That's evident by Spector putting Unchained Melody on the B side of a single. Thank goodness the disc jockies heard what a great song it was and played it instead! Which Spector wasn't happy about.
Hi Sal, Love the Righteous Brothers They were very popular even into the 70's and 80's. Elvis and Bill Medley were Great Friends and Elvis did his own version of this song Live in Las Vegas in 1970 it was Great. Bill Medley also wrote a Beautiful Tribute Song about Elvis after he Passed, called "Old Friend" Elvis Presley also Sang: "Unchained Melody" at his Final filmed Concert Preformance on June 21,1977 just weeks before his Passing on August 16,1977. I saw the Righteous Brothers at Red Rocks, Denver, in August of 1964, opening for some group called The Beatles! Tickets were $6.60. I was only 13, and don’t remember a thing about their set.
You are right, they were very popular. Great great song, had massive airplay. Unchained Melody. Soul and Inspiration, Little Latin Lupe Lu and Rock and Roll Heaven are all must hears. So glad you got to them!
Pure talent! Fun fact: they each appeared on the 9th season of the tv show, Cheers. Bobby Hatfield sang Unchained Melody and Bill Medley sang You've Lost That Loving Feeling.
It's funny that you mentioned Cheers because that was the first time I ever heard of the song Unchained Melody. I looked up the episode to make sure I was remembering it correctly, and the one I'm referring to was Season 4, Ep 20, from 1986 where Nick and Carla are in a dance competition and they danced to the song. I was 8 at the time, and it stuck with me all these years. It looks like the song has some repeat appearances in the series, too. 😊
Scrolled thru many of the comments ......this was the most played song of the 20 th century .. Also a very young Cher was one of the back-up singer seen toward the end . AND ...most importantly .....Righteous Brothers were elected to R and R Hall of Fame ...in 2004 .!!!!
Update: Bass-baritone Bill Medley’s new CD drops on Feb, 14, lots of great buzz about it. Can’t wait! I saw him in concert last week, and he sounds and looks great!
Bobby, the tenor, passed on several years ago. Bill Medley took on a new partner a few years ago and got back into his Righteous catalog. I appeared on a cruise ship with them just last year and at 82 Bill is still killing it.
In his later years, Bill Medley...the taller one, owned a restaurant in Newport Beach CA called "Medleys" and my dad took me there for my 21st birthday. Bill actually sang Happy Birthday to me...of course it was amazing but at 21, I didn't appreciate it like I would now. What talents both of them!
I loved this song when it came out. That deep voice grabbed me and never let go. I loved it then as I do today. Their harmonies are luxurious to the ears.
Even in the UK the Andy Williams Show was a must watch every week. He had so many talented performers on this show. Andy Williams is a terrific singer, putting it mildly, too.
"Unchained Melody" is phenomenal and it was a hit a second time when it was featured in the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. Their other #1, sort of the matching companion to "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" is "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration". Bill Medley (the one with the deep voice) also hit #1 in the 80's with his duet with Jennifer Warnes "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing, another Patrick Swayze movie.
Blue eyed soul at its finest. They joke about being thought to be black until their album cover came out. Fortunately they both did solos to display their individual talent. You can see here how their voices meld, their talent shines and their persision counts.
According to BMI, this is the most requested/played/air time song of the 20th century. This is yet another live performance on a variety show = no auto tune or computer aids here in '64. This song is primarily sung by Bill Medley. Their next hit - Unchained Melody ('65) is a solo from Bobby Hatfield; their 3rd big hit - Soul and Inspiration ('66) both sing one verse each with the finale mostly by Medley. Side note from this video: one of the chorus singers is a young Cher. Their harmony is just pure magic. And yes, back in the day, a weekly TV pamphlet would be mailed out listing shows/air time/channel for the coming week. Believe me, when this duo was going to appear "live" on a show all us gals would be tuned in, wishing "our night in shining armor" would serenade us like they did.
Oh yeah. We were glued to the black and white TV. The only one in the house. 3 channels. No cell phones. It was heaven. Little did we know how much. I was 6.
1964 was a very good year. The Beatles stormed the U.S. in February, I came along in October, & then there is this. The taller deeper voice is from Bill Medley who sang the feature song, "Time of My Life" with Jennifer Warnes for Dirty Dancing.
A young Cher was one of the backing singers on this track from a live TV show. The song was the most requested song on radio in the entire 20th century. Known as 'Blue-Eyed Soul' this song is responsible for more births than any other in the second half of the 1960's onwards.
I remember my parents attempting to dance to this song, while my older brother laughed so hard he cried. The Ed Sullivan Show, Andy Williams Show in the evenings were what we watched. My brother watched Dick Clark and the Dance Band. I watched my one hour of cartoons on saturday. I miss those days. My parents are long gone and my brother died last week. It is just me and my twin sister now.
This video is the visuals from a live performance on a show called Shindig synced up to the studio version audio. When Phil Spector brought them this song, Bobby was a bit irked and he asked, "What am I supposed to do while Medley is singing?" Spector replied, "Go to the bank."
UNCHAINED MELODY A must see video, featuring Bobby Hatfield, as seen on The Andy Williams Show in 1965. Please watch the video from beginning ( where Andy introduces them) to the end user Bill, Bobby and Andy sing together. You've Lost That Loving Feeling ( Cher was a back up singer) was the Most played song of the 20th century. It has been covered. Unclaimed Melody is the most covered song ever with swoon over 670 covrrs. Elvis covered it in his last album. There is a video of Elvis singing it at his last concert in 1977 shortly before his death. This song is featured in the movie Ghost ( the pottery wheel scene and at the end of the movie). This song was written for a small prison movie called Unchained ( in the 1950's) and was covered 3 times before Bobby made this song his own. (Al Hibbler did the best cover before Bobby) The version heard in Ghost is from the original recording. Bobby wanted to showcase his wide vocal range and did a slightly different version on Andy's show. Facts: Bobby was 24 when he sang Unchained Melody on Andy's show. He was extremely nervous ( it was a live performance on tv with a viewership of well over 1 million. [Andy's show was very popular for many years] ) His mother was I the audience ( sitting behind him to the left) and Bobby had a cold. I think you will agree that he knocked it out of the park. Listen to both the recorded and live versions, to hear the differences. Soul and Inspiration, You'll Never Walk Alone, Rock and Roll Heaven are 3 more duets to listen to. I Just want to make love to you ( Bill solo) Summertime ( Bobby solo) The Time of My Life, from the final dance scene in the movie Dirty Dancing is a Bill Medley duet with Jennifer Warens.
This is of course a famous song with so many cover versions, but the most successful cover was Hall & Oates version in the early 1980s. In fact, I was a young teenager and it was the first time I'd even heard the song. The other famous Righteous Brothers song is "Unchained Melody" (check it out).
One of the backing singers was called Cher I believe. Unchained Melody is also a great song but Bill made the mistake of letting Bobby sing it as a solo and then the film "Ghost" relaunched it into the charts.
Unchained Melody...be prepared to be WOWED
Try Summer Time from their TV show....
I believe this was the most played song in the late 20th century. They were righteous, brother! Bobby does a live solo version on the Andy Williams show of Unchained Melody. Here's a UA-cam link to the version introduced by Andy Williams. Well worth the extra time:
ua-cam.com/video/7G5fgTiPfVI/v-deo.html
Over 8 million plays on the air estimated.

Andy was a great singer himself and could recognise natural talent when he heard it.

One of the greatest songs of all time. Nothing else needs to be said.

Great reaction, great song but.... try Unchained Melody live 1965 from the Andy Williams tv show.
A lot of love was made to their music. A lot of babies were probably created. They were beautiful to look at and beautiful to listen to.
That whole bridge…. “Baby!” “Baby!” “Baby!” “BABY!” “I’m begging you please!” “PLEASE!” ….is just brilliant, incredible songwriting and performance.
This bridge was not in the song originally, but was added by Bill and Bobby. The writers intended them to “add their stuff “ to the song. Really great addition!

A young Cher was one of the backing singers on this track from a live TV show.
The song was the most requested song on radio in the entire 20th century.
Known as 'Blue-Eyed Soul' this song is responsible for more births than any other in the second half of the 1960's onwards.
NOW you've gone and done it! Exhibit A for what put 'classic' into classic music.....
Oh I know this will be good❤ Enjoy this beautiful ear candy😂❤❤ thanks.
This video is the visuals from a live performance on a show called Shindig synced up to the studio version audio. When Phil Spector brought them this song, Bobby was a bit irked and he asked, "What am I supposed to do while Medley is singing?" Spector replied, "Go to the bank."
UNCHAINED MELODY
A must see video, featuring Bobby Hatfield, as seen on The Andy Williams Show in 1965.
(Al Hibbler did the best cover before Bobby)
The version heard in Ghost is from the original recording.
I Just want to make love to you ( Bill solo)
Summertime ( Bobby solo)
The Time of My Life, from the final dance scene in the movie Dirty Dancing is a Bill Medley duet with Jennifer Warens.
This was live before a studio audience.
This is of course a famous song with so many cover versions, but the most successful cover was Hall & Oates version in the early 1980s. In fact, I was a young teenager and it was the first time I'd even heard the song. The other famous Righteous Brothers song is "Unchained Melody" (check it out).
On This Side of Goodbye and Justine are both great songs by The Righteous Brothers
"I Just Want to Make Love to You" is my favorite. Unfortunately, I have only found audio only. The song has been recorded by many great artists.

Elvis loved their songs and wpold ask Bill Medley to sim
ng it for him. even thou Elvis sang it too.
One of the backing singers was called Cher I believe. Unchained Melody is also a great song but Bill made the mistake of letting Bobby sing it as a solo and then the film "Ghost" relaunched it into the charts.
Don't know how it was a mistake. Bobby had been singing it solo for years. He brought it to the recording studio to be his solo for the album.
@@Aurora-tp3dy many thanks for your comment
