The thing about this song is the DRAMA of it. It's all about the dramatic buildup and power crescendo. Bonnie's voice is absolute smoky FIRE -- but the drama? -- that's mostly due to the writing and composition. And all that credit goes to the amazing Jim Steinman! Wonderful lady, met her once when she was backstage/on set (lost in France promo shoot for TV), we chatted some, discovered we had some places in common. She was dead nervous as she was about to perform, that made her very real in my view (not all rock stars are like that). Dear Mr SALVO! I do have to watch your reactions when ever you some 'classical Hits' for reactions especially if I know them already... It is pure gold to see when someone hears something great for the first time:) THX Man!
"It's a Heartache" makes a good intro to Bonnie Tyler's vocal style since the song and production are more straightforward; later hits like "Holding Out For A Hero" are bigger studio projects.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Love the words. LOVE her husky voice. This is actually the edited version. There is another verse that is a little wordy (so I can see why it was edited out, especially for time for a radio edit). I'm pretty sure there is a video for the extended version, too.
This was HUGE my junior year of high school. For our junior/senior prom a buddy and I sat on the floor listening to it over and over again to write down the lyrics since it was the theme song. It's also one of those songs that the video play on MTV made it even greater. Jim Steinman should have got much, much more public credit for writing it. Even when he wrote the songs for the Meatloaf's album Bat Out of Hell his name was shamefully in very small print.
Btw, maybe some ppl don't know this about the song but it was written and produced by Jim Steinman, who told Playbill in a 2002 interview that he wrote “Total Eclipse of the Heart” as a vampire love story. He said its original title was “Vampires in Love.” Now watch the vid again with that "vampire in love" theme in mind.
Jim Steinman actually wrote this for a musical called “Vampires In Love”. The musical never materialized, and the song went to Tyler. It really makes the lyrics take on a whole new meaning. It has such a broadway/operatic feel to all of it.
The musical did in fact happen under the title DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES. It played on Broadway starring Michael Crawford as the vampire. It only played 56 performances as it was a horrible production and panned by the critics. The song is used as the act two opening 'love' duet between the young virgin and the 100+ year old vampire
There are actually two versions of the musical. The first was German and was and is still popular in Germany and Austria and has been staged multiple times. It’s a serious story faithful to the music. They camped up the US version and tried to add humor which killed it. It’s on UA-cam and is a good watch. Tanz Der Vampire
Somebody mentioned Jim Steinman wrote it but what they may not have reminded you of is Steinman wrote all of the major songs for Meat Loaf in his career and you can see that in the video style! Rory Dodd was the duet partner
There used to be a UA-cam trend of "literal videos" where they'd re-record audio so that the lyrics would reflect what was happening on the screen. The redub of this video was one of the better-known efforts.
Truly one of the greatest vocalists ever. She never gained traction in North America again, but she's been going strong in Europe ever since. Her most recent album (2021's "The Best Is Yet To Come") is one of her best yet. Check out the single "When the Lights Go Down." Bonnie's voice is always intense, passionate, and powerful.
I worked and lived in the place where that video was set. Look up.American University Bushey. I remember for 3 months I was the only person there in the whole grounds and it was scary as hell!
Loved this song back in the day. Just learned from Professor of Rock that it was actually written about a vampire couple in love --which finally explained some of the video and lyrics after all these years. "Now there's only love in the dark", "forever's gonna start tonight..." Awesome song, stellar vocals, great pick! 😊❤
“In an interview with journalist Mick Wall shortly after the release of Meat Loaf's 2006 album Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, Steinman stated: "I didn't write [Total Eclipse of the Heart] for anyone but Bonnie." Steinman believed that CBS were expecting him to write something similar to "It's a Heartache", but he had different ideas.”
Holding out for a Hero (1984?) is another great song you might enjoy reacting to. I was also a fan if It's A Heartache (1977/1978) prior to Total Eclipse of the Heart. I love a gritty voice that can emote anguish the way hers does. Others with a similar quality that I enjoy: Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, and Marianne Faithfull just to mention a few.

I am laughing out loud watching you because anyone that yours is for the first time that loves music understands how amazing this is and those lyrics are everything!
Been a fan of Bonnie's for decades (even her 2013 UK Eurovision entry) but I'm a huge horror/slasher nerd so this song will always remind me of "Urban Legend" (1998). An awesome movie where this track was used to chilling effect!
One of the great female voices of old time, a very recognizable voice, her raspy and husky voice is very unique, Love this song and Holding out for a hearo, y another great song, pretty epic, and her videos are like movies or theater, a lot of things are happening
Her vocals are great but Jim Steinman gets all the credit for his ridiculously amazing theatrical Broadway production The man was a movie maker, a genius. I can spot his songs a mile away. She's just icing on the cake with that grit.
The music video for this song is rather bizarre to say the least; check out the parody of this song. It is the "literal music video" and was one that started the literal music video meme - classic. They did an amazing satirical interpretation.
I loved this song and still love it.she is beautiful lady. I’m 72 yrs.old.This was my first song, I ever listened too consistentlyback in 80’s. I had found a new husband. But he didn’t come around a lot until ,we got closer feelings for each other. I asked him,did he think,we were going to the next step. I love the video.
I used to drive along the A30 up Egham Hill going towards Virginia Waters in the UK As you went up Egham Hill on the left hand side was Holloway College where this video was filmed just always associated it with this track
If you want a real chuckle, check out the Literal Version of this song. A sound-alike sings a version where the lyrics exactly describe the video in all its weird glory.
Great singer, great song, but all these years later I'm still at a loss about where the visual narrative came from, unless someone decided that Jim Steinman songs must have mystical dark gothic imagery because of Meat Loaf.
I was puzzled too. Took a look, it was directed by Russell Mulcahy. He also did Video Killed the Radio Star, Hungry Like the Wolf, and Highlander. Definitely a guy who is comfortable with making people ponder what the heck the images mean. Sadly, the best description of the content I could find was "surreal, dream sequence".
Thank goodness for UA-cam, and for appreciative reactors such as you, SalvoG. As you're beginning to understand, there was so much brilliant, wonderful, and diverse popular music for many decades... so sad young people today have no clue what they're missing, unless they're on UA-cam. Okay I have to say one more thing LOL I just got through watching you react to the end of the video LOL I'm loving you saying and seeing this and seeing your reaction I should make you feel that way! I am laughing out loud watching you because anyone that yours is for the first time that loves music understands how amazing this is and those lyrics are everything!
Have to remember these videos back in the day were made for MTV...When it really was Music Television!
Best reaction ever Salvo!!! 🤩🤣🙌
I liked your comment.
But be careful with that "old time" if you don't mind.🙃😉
Your face when you heard the drop you were waiting for - priceless!
40 year old Banger
Thank you for showing the R-E-S-P-E-C-T it deserves
Now that you've seen the original, you need to see Total Eclipse of the Heart Literal Video Version.
Takes me back to my first year at ECU, way back in 1984. Fantastic tune, also love her voice.
sentí tu emoción como la mía me encantó tu reacción
My absolute favorite song as a teenager. This was Jim Steinman at his best!
Her vocals are great but Jim Steinman gets all the credit for his ridiculously amazing theatrical Broadway production The man was a movie maker, a genius.
I can spot his songs a mile away. She's just icing on the cake with that grit.
Awesomeness. ❤
The music video for this song is rather bizarre to say the least; check out the parody of this song. It is the "literal music video" and was one that started the literal music video meme - classic. They did an amazing satirical interpretation.
Love the song, the video is.....different. Love Bonnie's voice. I see others talked about what happened.
Tire tracks and broken hearts, it's a jungle out there, faster than the speed of night, it's a heartache
I used to drive along the A30 up Egham Hill going towards Virginia Waters in the UK
As you went up Egham Hill on the left hand side was Holloway College where this video was filmed just always associated it with this track
Hey wait a minute!!! Have you been peeking at my personal Playlist.?!!! No, but thank you for this one. I hope you enjoy.
Her surname is Tyler, not Taylor. The song was written by Jim Steinman who wrote many of Meatloaf's hits.
This song was in the Pentatonix Masked Singer video that you reacted to recently
Amazing
I am late on this one but you never fail as man and a real human SalvoG.
Thank goodness for UA-cam, and for appreciative reactors such as you, SalvoG. As you're beginning to understand, there was so much brilliant, wonderful, and diverse popular music for many decades... so sad young people today have no clue what they're missing, unless they're on UA-cam.
I don't often request particular music, but I wish you'd give the Moody Blues a close inspection in addition to "Nights In White Satin," pretty much the only song reacted to these days. They had countless beautiful songs.
Thank you!
Such a great old song, by a great singer... LOVED this when it first came out. Bonnie Tyler... awesome. Your confusion was actually hilarius! 😂 I loved watching your attempts to figure out, what the heck!!
✌ (Jodi/Child of the 60s)
Ridiculous vocals❤
