Grandma here. I was a teen when this song came out. I used to listen to them on the radio. And yes black and white kids listened to them. Actually in the 60’s we all listened to all the music. It wasn’t white music or black music. It was just our music
Back in the day, we had no idea what the singers looked like. We heard a song on the radio and fell in love with the songs, obviously not what they looked like. We DO need to bring back good songs like this. 😊
You knew what they looked like because of American Bandstand Ed Sullivan,Steve Allen, ect ect and the album covers. I'm 76 currently and I ve been watching and listening to rock 'n' roll since I watched the Ed McKenzie Saturday Dance Party in Detroit on WXYZ Detroit when I was 5 yrs old with my older sisters...Bill Haley and Comets, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, ect ect ect .
Facts. BUT… These shows ALWAYS had the artist pantomime over the album cuts. People wanted to hear what they heard on the record and no producer who made it to that level would risk mistakes. The BBC learned the hard way what happens when you let an artist perform LIVE on Live TV. Jimi Hendrix taught those fools you don’t put restrictions on an artist with actual talent. The Lulu Show. 1968. Jimi fixed some attitudes that night.
Definitely blue-eyed soul. I also heard of hall and Oates referred to as "blue-eyed soul," as well. They have many many top 10 Hits under their belt if you wanna check those out. I've heard that this particular song is the most requested song in all of the 20th century on radio apparently. something like that. I'm sure the top gun appearance of this song probably brought it even a renewed fame in the 80s.
I love your reaction. These guys always acknowledged their debt to black musicians who came before them. They got their name from a black Marine in their audience. He yelled "You're righteous, brothers!" and history was born.
They were known as Blued-eyed soul and I grew up with them thinking they were black singers until I saw them the first time on TV and was shocked. They got their name when singing in a club and after a performance some black marines were there, and they hollered out "that's righteous brothers" and they decided to keep the name.

@@karencahill4798 Interesting and yes, the music back then is light years ahead of today. IMO. Listen to "Koko Joe", "My Babe", "B-Flat Blues", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Try to Find Another Man". Blue-eyed Soul! I VERY much enjoyed your reaction. Already knew what was coming so I was looking for it. Like everyone else has said, live performance, no auto tune, just pure talent! ❤
I grew up with their music....and music way before this. Music has no color. You are not the first reactor to 'not expect this'. You need to check out their "Unchained Melody". They each had solos in their performances. "Unchained Melody" is Bobby Hatfield's. This is a live TV performance. No auto tunes. No second takes. Check out "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Sour and Inspiration". Bobby Hatfield has a five octave range. The Righteous Brothers were referred to a "Blue-eyed Soul". You probably heard this song in the movie "Top Gun".
Agree with you but Bobby had a 3 1/2 octave range on his recorded work (B2 to Eb6). Bill has made the comment "we never did figure out how high he could go". Check out 'range planet' for a breakdown of songs 😊
Bobby was a real entertainer, he could sing beautifully in any genre, he could move, he could make Bill laugh while they were singing. And he was gorgeous, of course we fell in love with Bobby; it was the least we could do.
Devante, welcome to the world of "Blue Eyed Soul". They are the reason that phrase was coined. And don't worry about thinking they were black when they started singing and you couldn't see their faces. They sing with such soul that many people think that. I too have been misguided by my ears before. Dobie Gray was a black singer that I didn't know was black until I saw a video. If you get a chance check out his song "Drift Away". It was a classic when I was growing up and I never knew he was black. I appreciate his music even more now. But I loved your honest reaction to this music video. 👍👍
“Abraham Lincoln” is Bill Medley. He e is joined by Bobby Hatfield who at the ending takes the song where no other singer could. I’ll bet he puts a smile on your face!
These guys are legends !! This song was played on the radio more than any other song in the 20th century !!! Read that again ! Check out unchained melody, soul and inspiration, rock ‘n’ roll Heaven, and many more
You'll never hear voices like this again because today everything is autotuned to get rid of all the wobbles and mistakes. These guys were naturally perfect and were singing live.
Blue Eyed Soul is how I have heard it explained as. I was 16 when this was recorded and the girls of the day went crazy over their sound. You have got to remember that this is live, no electronics, no auto tune, just plain talent. Many singers of that era made classics that many still sing word for word today. Unchained Melody was and is the most copied song in history and Bobby singing it solo just killed it. Go back into the 60's charts and see the talent we had back then and you will be surpised.
I'm 61 years old and big guy you are right about them slayin grandma's, my Mom said she and all her friends, in fact all women, all races just fell in love with these two cats. They were true artists of their craft.
Back in the day, we listened to music, good music, great music, funny music. Big Band tunes and the very best singers that ever walked the planet. I was born in '55, when the King of Rock 'n Roll was singing about houndogs and shaking his stuff in the jailhouse. I became "aware" when I heard Roy Orbison on a 9-volt transister radio and the world exploded like nuclear skyrocket when The Beatles headlined on Ed Sullivan and the rest is history. None of us cared what color the singer's skin was, it was their sound and their character onstage. Chuck Barry and Louis Armstrong, Nat "King" Cole and Aretha Franklin, but then Ol' Blue Eyes was a tough act to follow, so was The Fifth Dimension and The Temptations; later on we were diggin' us some Carlos Santana. And everyone who was hip was also way cool. We did that little thing called Woodstock;) days of music, brotherhood and love ... and Jimmy Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner. I'm pushing 70 now, but I'm glad that I was born into possibly the greatest time to ever live through. Sorry for the ramble, sometimes I just get going ...

I was 14 teen when this came out and I got to watch it at a neighbor house which I wasn’t supposed to be over there and boy. It was great sitting on the floor watching the on TV saying this song now at 72 it brings back many memories. Righteous brothers was bad and they went on for years great to see the younger generation learning about great artists of the past
I am 76 & you're right everyone listened to these guys. We only heard guys on the radio & TV didn't want Rock & Roll singers on TV. Elvis had a terrible time getting on the Ed Sullivan Show & they only filmed above the waist. We all listened to the music, it wasn't black or white it was the music all of it was no auto tune, no multiple takes. It was set up in the studio & everyone was on, the band, the back up singers, the lead singers it was one shot takes.
Back when they were starting out, they did a small show and after a song or the whole performance, a guy in the crowd stood up and yelled, “ That was righteous, brother!” And thats how they got their name. And they aren’t brothers.
1964. No synthesizers. No electronic mixing. No enhanced mics. You’re hearing THEIR VOICES. TALLENT ruled. Not gimmicks. Or stupid lyrics. Great reaction.
Watched your reaction to this dynamic duo several times and it's priceless. They really were "top notch" and you have so much more to discover. They had great soulful love songs but they were also known for letting it rip as you will see in some of their other duo and solo performances. Yes! They were both slayers and some of us old birds are falling in love with them all over again. Thanks for keeping their legacy alive for other generations to hear.
Definitely check out Bobby Hatfield’s “Unchained Melody” and the Righteous Brothers’ “Soul and Inspiration” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on the Ed Sullivan Show, “Just Once In My Life”. Their debut song was “Little Latin Lupe Lu”. If you want to hear soul, listen to Bill Medley’s “I Just Want To Make Love to You” and Bobbie’s “Summertime”. Bobby had a 4 or 5 octave voice. They could sing anything!
Agree to all of @hkbit3 suggestions of the next songs to listen to by the incredible Righteous Brothers. Loved your reaction & I subscribed. You were on point with all of your feelings. Add the record of "Ebbtide" sung solo by Bobby Hatfield to your listening/reaction list. The emotions they put into each song is amazing & their music is timeless. Sadly Bobby has been gone for 20 years but the baritone Bill Medley at age 83 is still performing with a new partner. I saw them last year in CA & saw the original brothers perform in IN about 1966. All these years and I still love their music.
This was their first #1 hit but they were one of the top groups of the sixties, with 22 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and at one point three albums in the top twenty simultaneously. Their inspiration was R&B which in those days was all 'coloured music', so plenty of people thought they were black when they first heard them. For their first three years they sang raucous rock and roll and were really popular in clubs and dances on the west coast, but in 1964 Phil Specter became their producer and gave them ballads like this one. Bill's bass baritone voice mixed with Bobby's high tenor with a stunning harmony that no group before or since has duplicated, but individually they had powerful voices as soloists. I hope you review more of their work... don't forget their first hit 'Little Latin Lupe Lu' written and produced by Bill. 😊ua-cam.com/video/JhLJk08Ectc/v-deo.html
I love to see people react to the Righteous Brothers and this song is my favourite buy them because they are in silhouette for a reason and you have to figure it was live there's no taking away what a classic performance this is 50 plus years later❤❤
When I first heard them I thought the same thing. This was called Blue-Eyed Soal Music. You should also check out their songs "Soal And Insperation" , or even " Unchained Melody", " Rock N Roll Heaven. The deep voice is Bill Melody and the other is Bobby Hatfield. Bonby does " Unchained Melody " as a solo act. ❤
These guys were pure perfection on vocals - raw, stand-up talent. No gimmicks just great lyrics, brilliant arrangement and two guys that could deliver. I remember hearing them on my 'crystal set' radio while sun-baking on the lawn in the backyard as a 13 yo. Had my dark thick rimmed sunnies on, laying down on my favourite beach towel, summer chilling in our backyard. 1960's bliss. Cheers from Sydney Australia.
Magical music, magical times. Was great to be alive back then. Was cruising n going to the drive in movies in my 57 Chevy with my girl. Still together. Magic was lost in Nam.
I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this, it's refreshing to see the younger generation listening & reacting to this type of music. I was born in 1977 & my parents listened to as they are called "the golden oldies". Growing up my parents would always tell me that I was born in the wrong era, I absolutely love the oldies. I look forward to watching more of your reactions.
Righteous brothers what great songs they sung keep playing there two songs all the time specially uncharge melody great singers I was born in 1965 great times ❤
I was born Oct. 1959. I have always loved all this generations' music. 50's and 60's had it going on. I like a lot of today's music of all genres, but these golden oldies will always be my favorite.
EVERYONE was listening to this back in the day. I was watching this broadcast real-time and it blew everyone's mind. The song shot up to number one and stayed there. This performance still floors me every time I see it.
Abraham Lincoln dude! I thought you were going to say Lurch. Bill still performs these days in Branson, Missouri. Bobby passed in 2003. My wife (btw...black) thought they were black as well. Quite a unique duo.
Soul with a Capital "S:" Produced by Phil Spector and his wall of sound. This is why they are all in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, ( Bill, Bobby & Phil)
That's a solid 10, my man. This hit the airwaves and was the most requested song in the 20th Century. Starting in 1964, the same year The Beatles hit The Ed Sullivan, completely overshadowing the previous act, the Broadway cast of Oliver starring a young *Davy Jones. Welcome to 1964. It was glorious. 😊 *Davy Jones became the lead singer of the wildly popular group, The Monkees.
He IS one of us. A human male. And a great singer. And YES the Righteous Brothers are two. Produced by the late Phil Spector who also produced The Ronettes, “Be My Baby” and overproduced a Beatles album.
Love to see reacting as you do, really appreciating like you did ! The hottest, romantic and soulful group of the 60's. They were called Blue eyed souls ! we only listened through the radio or vynil and everybody thought they were black, the bests of R&B, until they tv became affordable... and we realize they were white …!! Their name was chosen after a tour through the south when they performed in a saloon near a black marine base and some went see them. They were so impressed that shouted what they used to : that's righteous, brothers! They never fail you, allways give chills ! They sing solo, 🔥 Bill's I wanna make love to you or absolutely surreal Bobby's Summertime !!! And together their harmonies are spotless, moving and brilliant. But don't forget the most famous love song ... Bobby's Unchained Melody 🎶 the blonde one , he is a countertenor, don’t need falsetto , it’s natural and will blow you again ❤
And sorry that you are the only country that stil use those concepts. Wikipedia The Caucasian race (also Caucasoid, Europid, or Europoid) is an obsolete racial classification of humans based on a now-disproven theory of biological race.
Good review. I was 15 when this song came out. We listened to all kinds of pop/rock/soul music and it didn't matter whether the singers were black or white, American or British or Ausie, from the east coast, west cost or in the middle. My favorite groups were the Temptations, Four Seasons, Beach Boys, Gladys Night and the Pips, Righteous Brothers, Supremes, Beatles, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Jan & Dean, and I could go on forever about the great groups and singers. And after the 60s, there were the great 70s and the incredible 80s. I was a lucky guy to be young when I was.
That is NOT falsetto, that's FULL VOICE... Bobby Hatfield's range is BEYOND belief!! My first time on your channel so if you haven't already: Summertime Unchained Melody
That reaction at a minute 20 kills me every time. SOOOO many people if they've never seen these guys have that same one. The first singer here is Bill Medley.
NO Falsetto. For falsetto listen to the BeeGees.
Love seeing the reaction of now generation to my generation music. Raw talent, sang from the ❤.
Blue-eyed soul is what this is called, and these two were the absolute best at it.
We didn't have u-tube back then, had no idea what they looked like, just loved their sound. Ease never crossed my mind, just knew they had soul.
I'm 61 years old and big guy you are right about them slayin grandma's, my Mom said she and all her friends, in fact all women, all races just fell in love with these two cats. They were true artists of their craft.
The most played song of the 20th Century. That is quite an achievment considering all the great groups that dominated that century.
70 year old white woman; this was called blue eyed soul and we all loved it.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼I LOVE that you LOVE & Appreciate the BEAUTIFUL Music we grew up with,,,,,,, No Color is involved in Majestic BLESSED Voices,,,,, GOD knows no color & it’s So Beautiful 💜you feel it in your Soul
The very best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pure talent and hard work. Now you know how to serenade a young lady.
Almost 60 year old mics and the sound that good. No computer to correct the sound of their voices. Pure.
WELCOME TO BLUE EYED SOUL!!! Raw talent!
Back in the 64's I was 12. Yes, they slayed but you are killin' me! GREAT reaction!
Cracks me up to see first timers hearing people like the RB, Janis Joplin, etc who could really sing soul. And white, no less!! Gotta love it! 😂❤❤
There is no color when it comes to pure talent God gave this pure talent
Back when they were starting out, they did a small show and after a song or the whole performance, a guy in the crowd stood up and yelled, “ That was righteous, brother!” And thats how they got their name. And they aren’t brothers.
1964. No synthesizers. No electronic mixing. No enhanced mics. You’re hearing THEIR VOICES.
TALLENT ruled. Not gimmicks. Or stupid lyrics. Great reaction.
All in one take...
Yes indeed…they were top notch!! Love them!
I was 10 when this was released. Their music was very popular in fact the music of this era is in my opinion the best. Just pure unadulterated music,
Watched your reaction to this dynamic duo several times and it's priceless.
Unchained Melody was released under The Rightious Brothers name, not Bobby Hatfield.
Their vocals, especially Bobby Hatfield, had a voice that's almost superhuman.
I’m 77 yrs old. Everyone thought they were black until their album came out with their pictures on it. All their songs were over the top!
They were just so fantastic pure talent!!
I was most definitely conceived to this song. My mother giggles when I say this. Born in 65❤.
I love to see people react to the Righteous Brothers and this song is my favourite buy them because they are in silhouette for a reason and you have to figure it was live there's no taking away what a classic performance this is 50 plus years later❤❤
You're my soul and my heart's inspiration... Another great song by them
When I first heard them I thought the same thing.
I had just started high school when this song came out. All women love them.
Magical music, magical times. Was great to be alive back then. Was cruising n going to the drive in movies in my 57 Chevy with my girl. Still together. Magic was lost in Nam.
," you'll never walk alone" Bobby and Bill truly RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS
I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this, it's refreshing to see the younger generation listening & reacting to this type of music. I was born in 1977 & my parents listened to as they are called "the golden oldies". Growing up my parents would always tell me that I was born in the wrong era, I absolutely love the oldies. I look forward to watching more of your reactions.
Welcome to the wonderful world of blue-eyed soul! It has no melatonin to it!
Righteous brothers what great songs they sung keep playing there two songs all the time specially uncharge melody great singers I was born in 1965 great times ❤
This song is a classic, it’s about all mankind, amazing song, we all feel same today.
Great music is timeless! You just saw this AND YOU LIKED IT! 64 YEARS LATER.....👏👏👏
I am 66 and so glad to see young people enjoy this music
Soul with a Capital "S:" Produced by Phil Spector and his wall of sound. This is why they are all in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, ( Bill, Bobby & Phil)
I loved these guys. Every song they made was perfection. Just beautiful God given golden voices.
*Davy Jones became the lead singer of the wildly popular group, The Monkees.
I grew up seeing these guys on American Band Stand when i was a kid. My mom loved them.
Great music with no auto tune! That is all true talent!
I like your humbleness and appreciation for the singers.
Good job Sir
He IS one of us. A human male. And a great singer. And YES the Righteous Brothers are two. Produced by the late Phil Spector who also produced The Ronettes, “Be My Baby” and overproduced a Beatles album.
Nothing more awesome than slow dancing with your crush to this beautiful song!
My first time on your channel so if you haven't already:
Summertime
Unchained Melody
Soul and Inspiration to get the added Bill, of course.
Love them beautiful songs born in 1982 love 60s 70s 80s 90
That reaction at a minute 20 kills me every time. SOOOO many people if they've never seen these guys have that same one. The first singer here is Bill Medley. Check "Unchained Melody" to see Bobby Hatfield in action. There is a video that includes an interview with both of them before Bobby sings that is worth watching. It's fun and also tells how they got their name.
We loved them
