He was much bigger in Europe than in his own country, that happens to some performers. Laurel and Hardy is another example, massively popular in Europe, not so much in America.
If you would like an example of how big an impact on music he truly had, there is a concert video he did just a few days before his death called Black and White Night. The sheer amount of rock royalty that was there that night in support of him is astounding. Amazing performer and King of Cool.
B&W Night was frickin amazing. Literally music royalty up there as his backup singers and session musicians 😅 Also worth checking out his late collaboration with other music royalty in The Travelling Wilbury's.
Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Pretty Woman", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care" & "End Of The Line".
@@tramsey9059 False: Many people assumed Roy was going blind, but he was anything but. His trademark dark glasses he began wearing in 1963, just before a British tour with The Beatles. It happened by accident: when he misplaced his regular glasses, he wore the dark ones, which became his trademark.
Welcome to the world of Roy Orbinson. He was one of the four of Sun Records - he, Johnny Cash, Elvis and Carl Perkins. No re-mastering done. Roy had a vocal range that few could come close to. Take an evening and watch "Black and White Night" as it has many of his hits and look at his band members who are great artists in their own rights. Compare this version to his and kd lang's duet as well as kd's solo video of Crying. He had a huge impact in the UK. Many have said he was a musician's musician. Mr Orbison's last album, King of Hearts, was released after his death by Jeff Lynne who worked with Roy in The Traveling Wilburys which also included Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan.
@@SeahorsesJay SalvoG comments that the sound is so crisp and strong that it had to be remastered. But if when listening you can hear the "hiss" which is removed when re-mastered. This performance was on single use film not video which can be recorded over.

Roy was an immense talent, one of a kind. No one sang about heartache like Lonesome Roy. He wasn't blind. He started wearing sunglasses because of the bright lights onstage and it became his trademark look. True story: When Elvis was just starting out, you could book him to play a concert for $100 a night. A concert promoter in Texas - I wish I knew his name - booked Elvis to play five shows in five different Texas cities in one week. At two different shows that week, two young Texas boys saw Elvis and decided to start making music themselves. Their names were Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. We owe that promoter so much.
The look on your face was priceless. Roy was unique. If you want to be blown away check out his song Walk On. Or his unbelievably beautiful version of Danny Boy.
Fun Fact: Roy didn't need those glasses. When he first started, he was super shy/nervous. He wore the glasses to basically hide behind them and they became signature.
Yes he did need the glasses, he had worn very thick glasses for years and was very self-conscious about his glasses. He started wearing prescription sunglasses to hide the sickness of the prescription that he needed. You can find pictures of him when he first started out and see how thick his glasses were.
Roy Orbison had such a unique sound and his voice could just fill a concert hall. You can instantly tell Roy's voice once you get familiar with it. I think you may have heard him just didn't know it as he was famous for singing Pretty Woman.
If you haven't already, you must do k.d. lang singing this song with Roy Orbison. As well, k.d. lang singing Hallelujah at the Vancouver Olympics opening. This is not the original being lip-synced.
Yodeling is just switching rapidly between chest voice and head voice or falsetto. He makes a couple of yodeling flips in this song. It sounds awesome. Do check out some of his other songs. He definitely has a unique and beautiful voice.
Bono had done some recording with Roy and he said he could not understand how such a huge voice came out of a man who's voice barely moved. Elvis Presley called him the greatest voice ever. That pretty much sums it up.
If you really want to be blown away by this guy, get the full Black and White Night DVD. All the beautiful songs, backed by literally an All-Star band. He is an American icon!
Thanks! Yes, Roy could yodel.. just like Patsy Cline could... these incredible vocalists had such versatile talents... appreciate your reaction.. and also Traveling Wilburys.. the song that featured Roy was "Not alone"...
Roy was the very first singer that I fell in love with. That voice is so iconic. You really don't know what you've been missing. He was the only singer my older brother ever cared for and still does to this day. I have introduced his music to many younger generations and they all still love his catalog of songs 🎶. You can pick anyone of his songs and they are gold. You might try his collaboration with Canadian K.D. Lang on this same song. It is beautiful and when she finishes it people have said "Elvis has left the building and shes beautiful." 😆 As Dagmar stated he later towards the end of his life joined an iconic band of legendary musicians called The Traveling Wilburys and they put out some great music that was cut short by Roy's passing. A sad day it was indeed. But his beautiful music lives on. Pretty Woman I think is the most recognized. Thanks for your great reactions. 🥰💜🎶💜
Without revealing my age, lol, I have to say Roy Orbison was one of my favs when I was in high school. That song is so haunting and with his voice it can always bring tears. Thanks so much for your reaction to this classic song.
He tragically lost his first wife to a motorcycle accident, followed a few years later by the loss of 2 of his 3 sons in a house fire while he was away on tour. IMO the grief this man carried with him added an emotional depth to his voice that is truly moving.
He was a big influence on Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees while he was growing up and developing his music. And Barry got to sing with him doing a song called Indian Summer with the Gatlin Brothers. And then Barry held back a bit because he was sharing a mic with Roy and didn't want to drown out his voice so no one could hear him because he was getting elderly.
If you’ve ever watched the movie Pretty Woman, you have heard this voice before, singing the song of the same name. Btw, if you haven’t seen that movie, you definitely should. As always, I love your reactions.

Orbison makes his vocals look so easy. There is no doubt that he had one of the greatest operatic voices of all time, but chose to go into POP music. I say operatic, because you could take any of his performances and place the file into a technical analysis machine, and one would see that he hits every note with precision. His mid-'60s hits like this one, "Oh, Pretty Woman," & "Only the Lonely" influenced _everyone_ from the Beatles to Elvis...to Bruce Springsteen and Prince. Check out Roy as part of the Travelling Wilburys!! Also this song (Cwying 😂) performed by Tony Angelino (who has a lisp) and Raquel - in Only Fools and Horses.

Please play Honey suckle Blue from Drivin n cryin...and nantucket sleighride from Mountain... and Bird has Flown by Deep Purple it was soo progressive for 68.....thanks....FOREPLAYLONGTIME BEST OF ALL TIME ...
Roy Orbison RIP, among the greats, one of a kind and so loved. His last recording was with The Traveling Wilburys, check it out, it's wonderful. A super group with some of the best musicians of our time.
Listen to The Traveling Wilburys. It’s Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Bob Dillon. Great music from a great group.
Haven't listened to Roy for a long time..My mum loved him..What a Legend...
Springsteen... an Orbison fan...said the way to listen to Roy was "...in the dark, and alone...".
Listen to K D Lang's tribute cover of this tune.
Thanks for listening!
Check out Roy as part of the Travelling Wilburys!! Also this song (Cwying 😂) performed by Tony Angelino (who has a lisp) and Raquel - in Only Fools and Horses.
I saw him in concert in Miami just about a year before he died. Just stood there and sang. Best concert I've ever been to... and I've been to a lot. The audience went crazy.
In our day, vinyl was just great, stereo was even better, but the music was out of this world GOOD!!! Lovely to hear you appreciate our "moldy oldies" as much as we did in the day!
He was a composer. As well wrote most of his music. Left a lot of on publish written music that his two sons were going to publish..
You nay well have heard him “Pretty Woman” is one, just one classic.
Oh I'm going to look forward to this one Thanks for taking this journey. I haven't found a ton that I love but there are a few that are just spectacular by this wonderful man I think the work he did with the traveling willberries was phenomenal
