- Davin in a Formula Drift car?? This week we took Davin outside his comfort zone and visited Stephan Papadakis and his team at Papadakis Racing to see what it takes to assemble their bespoke, turbocharged Toyota Supra B58 inline 6-cylinder engine that is potentially capable of 1200 horsepower. This is a brand new engine for their GR Corolla Formula Drift car, driven by Ryan Tuerck, and it was fascinating to get a look behind the scenes. Especially fun was seeing Davin's face on his first professional drift ride along.

I’ve watched Steph build quite a few engines now. His attention to detail is un surpassable. True artist.
I always wait for Davin redline rebuild updates
Steph Papadakis In The Building!!!
💯💪🏽💯
I’m glad to see formula drift becoming more popular! And Steph is someone I want to hear more from. I highly recommend checking out his UA-cam channel if this is your first time seeing him.
The crossover I didn’t know I needed!
You know Davin was chomping at the bit to help 😎
Now he knows how we all feel
One of my favorite engine's.
The ultimate colab, NICE!!!!!!
I hope you guys do a redline rebuild breakdown video on this one.
Would be cool to hear Davins experience watching a build of a cutting edge motor, plus his experience comparing drifting to stock cars
I have to admit, this is one cool crossover that I didn't see coming!
As always, I really enjoyed this installment of Redline Rebuild so much.^^
OG in the house, this guy was the first to take a Honda into the 9s!
one of the best engines ever developed by BMW. 💯
The two best builders in the same room! Awesome!
The B58 sounds so much different in the GR Corolla than the GR Supra! That's cool!
damn two of my favorite engine builders :D
Well that sure was fun to watch. So seamless it almost looked like he's done it before.
🤘
Such a pretty motor. Nice.
"I'm the builder, it is my responsibility."
A lot more people should live to these words. I know that not everyone can be a Steve Morris (USA) or Nelson Hartley (New Zealand) but a lot more builders should take more attention to tolerances and parts combinations. ✌️
LOVE THIS MASHUP!!! ❤
What a lovely Engine stand you're using. The care and detail of this work is like a Swiss watch, perfect.
after long time not see papadakis building an engine, now i see it again
Would love a directors cut of the build where steph can go more in depth on the technical parts of running a b58. Tuning strategies regarding port injection and valvetronic etc.
It’s coming!
I bet it was "killing" him not to get his hands dirty with that build!
Great engine builder?
That should be Papadakis 👍🏻💪🏼
beautiful work
IS THAT A SUPRA
SUPRA!?
No, Toyota GR corrola
No, this is Patrick
@@vitocorleone1960 Bmw Corolla :P
what an epic collab!
Steph Papadakis …epic build…!!
The legend doing his magic.
THAT, was a great video! Although, I am a bit biased as a drifter and drift fan with a tremendous amount of respect for Stephan Papadakis.
Yep, BMW made the mark everywhere now, in some Toyotas and I loved it! It feels like these two have something in common with the same visionary of holding on to the glorious ICE engines and keeping driving spirits alive🤘
Like Tokyo Drift Overload !
💯👍
Shout-out to all the engineers/engine builders out there! The skill it takes to tear down an engine and rebuild it is just amazing to me! 🫡
They 3D printed the manifold! Thats wild
And out of inconel, no less! That stuff is incredibly heat resistant.
Nice collab!
Papadakis is a legend
Lovely
those last wise words. enjoy
Papadakis lessgo!!
Great content as always. Would also be interested in the potential of the S58 engine, stock and modified.
Спасибо за видео 😊❤ЛАЙК!!! 😊❤❤❤
BMW 3.0L Aluminum block, same engine they use in the 335i, M3, and Z4 if you are looking for one. The older 3.0L from the 325i and 328i are magnesium blocks and can't handle the boost so heads up.
I miss their uploads.
Traverse City Boy GOES FOR A RIDE !
Outstanding 😂😂😂wonder what Mr Toyota has to say about this 😂😂😂
I’ve been telling Gintani to start looking into additive manufacturing
b58 is the true sucessor to the 2jz engine.
Γειά σου Παπαδάκη 😉😉
Ryan!
Printed with Inconel?!?! Holy crap!
See this is a swap that im quite intregued by. Eventually I may have to to a swap for my mk3 supra, especially since the 7m-gte is so difficult to find here in Sweden.
Suprised to see, a wet sump setup and not a dry sump given the application.
The driver ... I forgot his name and I'm sorry ... seems like such a good guy. I don't know if anyone noticed, but when he said something about achieving more HP reliably, he made the "knock on wood" gesture on his head. Anyway, it was endearing. Nice video. Nice channel. I'm happy I found you guys. Be safe out there!
@hagerty , Can i do this stuff with my 2.0 L RAV4?
Is the Pantera back on the road? Would like to se the final result of all the work.
wow for a second I thought that was Ryan T
Them 40s hit him hard lmao.
A BMW engine in a GR Corolla for drift !!!
Several Straight-6 powered GR Corolla currently. Papadakis has B58. Cusco Racing has HKS 3.4 liter stroked 2JZ on GR Corolla for Kalle Rovanperä, Goodride Motorsport driven by Kazuya Oshima (Super GT driver) as well and Team Toyo Tires Hokuto Matsuyama.
Biggest difference is the 2jz is long and heavy cast iron block where the b58 is only like 2 inches longer than the 2ar and is light being all aluminum
@@clonecaptian that's right.
The turbo is so big that it adds thrust like a propeller on an airplane.
Always wondered why timing on engines like this aren’t gear timed? Is there a reason manufacturers stick with chains?
I’m gonna assume they swapped the rear diff on that GRC as well
how many engines were built? red valve cover in the build. black valve cover in the engine bay
One engine. Valve cover was swapped out because the red didn't look good with the anodized yellow on the intake!
Why use copper head gasket instead of an MLS gasket?
I'm new to engine building so I'm not sure if this is considered an upgrade or just a preference.
Gotta trust the Master Engine Builder on this one!
@johnpurdum8126 I trust his experience. I'm just curious because I want to learn and understand.
there's a lot of things but basically it depends on how much boost or nitrous you use, a ls v8 won't need a lot to reach 1000hp+ so it's kinda a waste of money (because you also need to machine the heads/block for the o-rings) but for small engines, if you are still using mls at 1000+, you're really reaching
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍
I'm not an engine builder. Why would he use a copper head gasket if he has to do all the extra sealing vs a more conventional head gasket?
Copper head gaskets lets much more heat get pulled from the head into the block. Less chance of predetonation. Copper is also a little more malleable than MLS so it seals better. Older cars used them for their properties as well. But due to the cost of copper its fallen out of practice in everyday useage.
That is correct actually... This the first pro engine builder that uses silicone AND gasket... You are a patcher when you do that... And guess what my mechanic courses had the practice part of things at bmw...🤔
@@eduardbolchi7672 I'm surprised Steph didn't use the roller method to seal that head gasket. you get a plate of glass and put your sealant on that. Then you use a rubber roller over the sealant and transfer it to the gasket. You get a perfect stippled effect on the sealant, and there's the right amount of squeeze-out. Works great. I've been doing that sealing two stroke cases for years.
@@dougrobinson8602 i get that... But with the right gasket silicone is not only useless but it can actually warp things and do damage
@@EdyNooBstaR On this design he had to use a lot of silicone unfortunately.
Please make some moto engine! V4 for example!) please)
This is a dumb question because I can think of a few ways to do it but how did they fit a 6 cylinder in a 3 cylinder car
you cut out the firewall and move it WAY back
It's mounted longitudinal. It's more space in the engine bay and you need the power to the rear wheels anyway in a drift car.
There is build series/overview of this drift Corolla somewhere on UA-cam. But long story short it’s basically an entirely custom rwd chassis wearing a Toyota Carolla hat. I don’t think any of the original floor pans or firewall still exist.
It started as a 4 cylinder car, it was built before the GR Corolla was even announced, and with enough fabrication skills you can basically fit any engine in any car.
@@ChuckThree Original firewall and floor pan are mandatory in Formula Drift, you can make some small modifications to fit the engine but nothing that would compromise the structure of the car.
McLaren F1 used a BMW V12 6.0L after Honda refused to make a V12. Everyone knows Toyota would have never made the Supra with a bespoke engine because of the R&D costs.
I'm glad it worked out for BMW who got Toyota's Hydrogen technology in exchange of the chassis and engine from BMW. Both teams have a lot of respect for each other so I'm not sure why people get all worked out.
Power band
NIce bm.....w? NASTY.
👊👍
5:06 Why pulley of steering wheel pump is so big?
to lower the rpm on the pump to make it last longer and not boil the oil
@@AtMortenJ thank you for your answer.🤝
1.25 just seems right
How much for the engine rebuild?
It sounds similar to the 2JZ
Not badmouthing the B58 but i find it funny they ditched the 2AR 'Yota powerplant in the Corolla Hatch in favor for the BMW 6 cylinder. Kudos to him for developing and running something other than the 2JZ for their program
I mean, those 1000hp (250hp per cylinder) were VERY hard on that 4 cylinder engine and it wasn't very reliable, the B58 can hold those HP levels way better.
Tbh it honestly looked like the ar's had issues when they ran them in the rollas. It's not too surprising they went B58,when it did well, even in its first year being in the mk5 when aasbo started + them tossing it in Castro's GR86 also.
Do they even test them motors before taking them on track? Or do the trust Stephan that much to just go to the track after finish building them? 🤔
They put the engine in the car and then run it on a chassis dyno to do all the initial tuning.
Is it just me or did Ryan use a 2AR engine over the wknd at long beach?
He was running B58.
Why isn't Davin riding with Larry in his F-Drift cam-chase Supra?!?!
So youre telling me. If a beemer inline 6 fit. A 2j will fit 🤔
Dude is an engine building genius but I can't help but think he looks like the illegitimate love child of Vin Diesel and Jeff Bezos. 😂
Not one of the best sounding I6 though is it
Complimentary algorithm enhancement comment!😊
That thumbnail title is pure bait lol
Beautiful engine. It's a shame it's only purpose is to destroy tires.
BMW ...
I’ve heard they’ve had to replace the B58 like crazy since switching to it. Also, I bet Steph was going insane that the dude was touching the timing chain with bare hands lol. He’s incredibly meticulous. Dude should’ve thought about that. This engine is their comp engine. It needs to be perfect.
Replace as in blowing up?
That's not true, they only blew up ONE B58 in 2022.
Missed opportunity. Should have had a much more detailed build with Papadakis rather than rushing through it.
Don’t you mean BWW B58 engine? Toyota has never made a B58. Just because it got pulled from a Supra doesn’t make it a Toyota engine.
so? this is 2024 nobody f care dude...lol
@@randomthing4639 if you don’t care, why do you care?
toyota worked with bmw on the engine and made sure it passes their tests, don't be one of those annoying fanboy
@@mostneuter I’m sure BMW engine tests are fairly comprehensive. I don’t think Toyota have much to worry about… it’s guaranteed to leak oil at multiple locations. 😂
In case you think I’m a BMW fanboy, BMW could put the same trust in a Toyota engine, minus the concerns of biodegradable gaskets.
The only people taking offence to my comments seem to be Toyota fanboys. Am I wrong? Why are facts so offensive these days?
@@superspeeder you're not making any sense
1000 hp ????
Probably more . 1,000hp is almost the bare minimum those Formula Drift cars run
Quit calling it a Supra engine just because you're putting it into a Corolla. It's a BMW engine.
Umm except is not a supra engine, it's a bmw engine.
What's a Toyota B58?
😉
Toyota fans talked all that reliability stuff yet got a BMW engine in 1 of Toyota flagship smh.......,....BMW all day
2nd gen B58 in the Supra was co developed by Toyota
The hell that have to do with toyota fans? We didn't choose it. We didn't want it.
When BMW send the engine to toyota it failed to pass the Toyota standards. So they fixed it and send it back to bmw for mass production.
Toyota still make reliable engines... they just don’t make any performance engines with 4 or more cylinders
@@FrosenHellyou all ate that Toyota marketing
Lame engine choice, but what do I know about em. :D
Ryan Teurck: wins a round of formula drift in a car that looks a Toyota Corolla.
everyone: buys Toyota Corolla.
that's our species in a nutshell 🤔🤷♂️
B58 is BMW motor 🥱🧃
Cool engine but lots of shitty designs in it
How to make BMWs even less reliable.
BMW's are extremely reliable. When not owned by morons who don't service them regularly.
Just realized my dude does not trust toyota, so he has to take it down and rebuilt it to make sure it is good (and it is). I mean if it was some american made engine why not.
😐 every form of top tier motorsports rebuilds their engines… there is no stock, straight from the factory engines in FD
